iPhone - Official Thread

So rather than starting a new thread, I'm posting question that's POP/IMAP related. I'm not an expert on this, so I ask you fine gentlemen if you can help me out here.

Everytime I check my gmail account and check new e-mails through my iPhone, new e-mails still show up as unread when I access my e-mail from the Mail program on my computer. It also happens viceversa. Now, this doesn't happen with my college e-mail account, which works through Google. What setting is there to synchronize the e-mails read flag whether I access them through regular website or IMAP/POP(whichever I'm using)? Thanks for any help, guys!

You won't get it though... that much I promise you. I've been working on one since I read your post yesterday. Ping me via PM as I'd like to see your list of requirements for what makes a good news reading application.

Hell if people are willing to pay for one, I'm willing to accommodate them :)

Bought Byline and I HATE IT.

It syncs, stars, notes, opens items just fine, but it gets the fundamentals of reading RSS all wrong

* No "mark all as read" anywhere
* Every content receptacle only loads 25 items at a time? WTF? At any given time, my Google Reader will have between 1,200 and 15,000 unread items. 25 new items per folder is a COMPLETE JOKE.
* Folders just appear/disappear, requiring me to quit the app and reopen it frequently.
* no UIScrollView to read posts and summaries, instead I'm just forced to arrow through every single post screen-by-screen, or else they'll never get marked as read.

I'll give it a chance tomorrow to see how it does over EDGE, but this will probably be the first app for which I request a refund.

I have to admit, I was not expecting such a negative review.

a couple things to make your usage less onerous if you haven't already deleted the app.

1. in the app settings (within the apple settings program) you can change the number of new items from 25 to 200 in steps. 200 would work best for you.

2. if you scroll to the bottom of a folder of new items, you get a "mark all as read" button.

in your case, since you have TENS of THOUSANDS of unread items (about two orders of magnitude more than my list feed or most other people) the scrolling would be a huge pain in the ass for you so you would not have seen the button.

anyway, that's all for now. the only other feed reader I know of that syncs to google reader is Doppler but I found that one really poor at organizing feeds. perhaps it has gotten better...

It's there -- just in a really weird place. Scroll down to the bottom of a folder and you'll see it.

Same as above...go into the Byline settings in the Settings menu and you can change it to load anywhere from 25-200 items at a time.

Whoa. A couple of things, although 15K new items is a pathological use case for any software that might run on a mobile phone. How do you ever actually read all of those articles in the course of a day? I'm barely able to keep up with the 500ish that show up per day in my RSS reader.

1) Preferences for the application are under Settings, not within the app itself. You can alter how many items you want per folder to as many as 200. (From what I understand, the 200-item limit was derived from Mail -- basically, since Apple doesn't think having more than 200 items loaded is a good idea, neither should Byline.) That doesn't help with the single New Items folder, which will be capped at 200, but since each individual folder can hold up to 200, you can get a lot more items loaded up per sync.

2) Folders persist for as long as you have unread items. (I don't have my iPhone handy, but I'm pretty sure that it has a "keep unread items" preference which would have the effect of keeping all folders there.)

3) "Mark all as read" appears at the bottom of every folder when there are no more new items to load. (In other words, if you have things set to 200 per folder, and there are 145 new items, the "mark all as read" appears at the bottom of the list.) The only way to apply it globally, however, is from the bottom of the New Items folder -- but again, that presupposes that all of your new items fit in the folder.

4) Performance over EDGE is painful, to say the least, but that's partly because AT&T is still actively gimping EDGE in favor of 3G. I have mine set to only archive starred items or noted items for offline reading, and only to load the summaries otherwise.

I'm very sorry that I steered you wrong...but it also sounds like you might have missed some of the features. Hopefully some of this is helpful.

I went overboard. Initial experience was just awful, because all it did was spin the processor as it took about 10 minutes to archive 100 (and only 100) posts over WiFi.

After playing for a while, I did eventually find the mark-all-as-read button, but the fact I had to scroll all the way down manually was a little annoying.

Thanks for pointing out it has a Settings.app prefpane. Setting it to 200 will hopefully make me less venomous :)

Also, there are options for when you want to archive entire articles. The sync is MUCH faster if you don't get the entire webpage every time. The only time I turn that on for new items is when I'm syncing in the morning before a flight and want to have stuff to read on the plane. Otherwise, it's just as easy to read teasers and go to the in-app browser when I'm home on WiFi anyway.

Yeah, I'm disabling it. Hopefully it's faster.

Check out the Byline Google group if you haven't already (http://groups.google.com/group/byline) -- some good dialogue goes on over there, particularly on the development of version 2.5.

Nice. Glad development hasn't stopped. It's been long enough since the last release that I was worried.

I had my iphone freeze pretty bad just now..

Usually, Safari will freeze sometimes but the home button will get me out of it.

This time though... the home & power button did nothing for over 5 minutes. Seems like it would have stayed frozen until the battery died. I had to press and hold down the Sleep/Wake and Home button until the Apple logo appeared. Basically, I had to reset it.

Is the cause from dropping? I have it in a leather case but I've dropped it a few times.
Is it overheating from the case?
Did I have too many tabs on Safari?

I get the type of freeze when you select an icon, it goes dark to indicate you selected it... And that's it. Totally frozen. Nothing responds. Happens on my 3G and my (ex) GFs 2G.

That Trailguru app is pretty amazing. I did a short hike, and when I uploaded it to the trailguru site when I was done I had more info than I knew what to do with. Tons of stats, as well as a perfect representation of the route I took, with start and endpoints. I then took a drive and it mapped everything perfectly as well, including any pictures I took along the way. I could easily send out a link to facebook so my friends could follow along the same route if they wanted to, or use the trail for their own hikes.

Did I mention it's a free app?

now that I have stereo bluetooth in 3.0 b2.. I don't want to give it up.. I now understand why people complained about the lack of this feature.

Oh that sounds cool! I'll have to check it out when I get home.

Wow the Premium version of the MLB app is great. I listened to baseball all day at work today, got in my car and put the Yankees game on. It's almost too easy to keep up with all the teams.

I'm enjoying it as well. I was going to buy the gameday audio package to listen on my Macbook, but this is cheaper and portable. Now I can listen to my Nats losing everywhere. :lol

Yeah its awesome. I was listening to the Marlins game today and it was nice and clear. I used 3g and it kind of killed the battery. I might try edge when Im at work, hopefully the quality is still good.

Next-gen iPhone upgrade will at least have a video-capable camera.

And...

So, that should be nice.

The newest fad on all the big Mac fan forums is for 3G iPhone owners that bought it last year to make topics whining about whether or not they'll get a subsidy this year even though they technically aren't eligible for an equipment upgrade under normal AT&T procedure.

I'd love to see these whiners not get any subsidy as they're becoming increasingly annoying, but I'm sure AT&T will do something, but I think they're setting themselves up for a never-ending cycle of unfulfilled subsidy obligations if they start down that path.

I'm still using my Edge-only iPhone so I'm upgrade eligible now, and if that's not enough I'll be done with my contract in October so I could at least upgrade then.

:D I'm assuming Apple will up the memory to handle all that.

ps. Anybody have both a numerical and graphical battery in the status bar?
im sure they will...but not because its needed for to take video as Cycorder does it rather effeciently as is and thats from independant programmers

but then there is the whole MMS only on iPhone 3g when SwirlyMMS has proven the 2g iPhone is fully capable of MMS

Well, they would do good to offer something. Otherwise people would start asking the question: Why buy a fucking phone that costs 300+ dollars only to see it replaced and obsolete in one year?

This is why I walked out of the line halfway through at the last minute and decided to hold onto my EDGE. This way, if the new iPhone has video conferencing, my wife and I can get two on day 1 and hold onto the EDGE as a backup

I don't know that 'obsolete' is the right word. I don't think that even the original iphone users have necessarily been 'shut out', even two years later. Only now, with 3.0, will they really have a legitimate reason to feel that way IMO.

Besides, even if the cell phone you bought didn't have 'iPhone' written on it, there's a good chance you will see a phone that might be better or more appealing than whatever you have now within two years.

you're right. obsolete is definitely not the right word.

the 3G iPhone will still make calls, surf the net, run apps. and it is actively supported by Apple with the ongoing OS updates. And it will still be desirable by people, even with a new model out

outdated might be the right word. but not obsolete.

we don't replace our TVs each year just because a new model comes out. or our cars. and the iPhone 3G is perfectly capable of lasting a long time with software updates and continuing app development

I reserve the term "obsolete" for things that are truly dead in the market like, say, HD-DVD players or CRT projection TVs. those are items that have no value. an iPhone 3G will still have value for several more years.

Is there anything stopping the 3G from recording video?

Nope, but I would imagine that some of that fancy post processing functionality that went into iMovie will find its way into the iPhone 3.5G.

So I'm on a jailbroken 3g and was using PDANET for tethering. I haven't used it in a few months and now tethering is a paid service through ATT. Will I be charged for using it?

Why the fuck do people expect technology to stop progressing just because they bought something "expensive"?

AT&T shouldn't offer anything other than their "early upgrade" price that's available to all customers no matter where they are in their contract. If AT&T (or any carrier for that matter) gives you several hundred dollars off a phone for signing a two year contract, you shouldn't be able to get that same benefit after only one year.

Fuck, the entitlement some people have pisses me off.

So I have a 1stgen iPhone.. and I'll be replacing it in June.
How does the 2 year upgrade thing work?

If you are within 5 months of your contract end date you can resign a 2-year deal and get the fully subsidized price of the phone (for example, $199 8GB 3G, or $299 16GB 3G).
