The 1 billionth App is coming pretty soon. 3500 apps are downloaded per minute, and right now we need 950k until 1 billion, so it should be here in about 271 minutes, or 4 hours and 31 minutes, which would be 6:10 Eastern, 3:10 Pacific, so if you maybe want to at least try for the give-away, 5:45 would be a good time to start DL ing...

Pretty sure the give-away entries started the 10th, so any DLs made between then and the 1 billionth app would give you a chance. I don't think there is any prize for actually being the 1 billionth app downloader.

Could be awesome...but what's the point of putting out an app if you tell people not to d/l it?

I want to try it out and see how it'll play with GAF, but 10 bucks for a potential flop doesn't sound look a good idea...

Oh... Some site said it was the 1 billionth one...

Oh well, I've been on an App downloading frenzy anyway... Not that I'll win, just that it's pretty epic to have 1 billion DL'ed apps.

Yeah I just read that everyone who bought an app is included, not person with the 100,000,0000,000000,0000 app. I am an app buying machine! Elemental td = win.

GAF is vbulletin, right?
Supposedly there is an update "coming soon" (as of the 20th) that will add support for vBulletin.

Hey iPhone nerds..... im wondering if anyone knows of a good place where i can get an unlocked iphone for a reasonable price... in the last month i broke my phone and lost my ipod so obviously im wanting to kill two birds here.

is it really as simple as just putting my sim card into the phone and thats that?

You can try craigslist for local sellers of unlocked phones. they won't be cheap but maybe you can get a first gen EDGE model if that's acceptable to you.

the 3G model might become cheaper once the new model hits in the summer.

and, yeah, if the phone is unlocked, just put in your SIM and you're good to go. I used an unlocked first gen model for several months.

just don't download OS updates to the phone until you hear that they've been jailbroken and don't interfere with the unlock you have.

Alternatively, get a phone from an officially unlocked region, ie. NZ. My iPhone 3G is from NZ, and it works with any sim, completely unlocked, unjailbroken, and I have been downloading every update.

1,000,000,000!!!!

...now we have to wait approx 10 days to figure out who won all that badassness.

If the potential winner is a resident of Sweden, in order to be declared the winner, he or she must correctly answer, without assistance of any kind, a mathematical skill testing question, to be administered by telephone.

WTF

hmm thanks for the other info... i guess i should have mentioned that i live in Sweden right now, might ask around the office tomorrow.

So when I'm syncing photos, is there a way to import with original resolution instead of the automatic crop/resize bullshit? It's been pissing me off a lot lately.

If not, there an app that fixes it?

isn't that insane? Its only been about 10 months since launch.

And didn't apple say there are about 37 million iphones and touches out there? That means on average, everyone has download about 27 apps each? That can't be right.

Some kid won it all. He was the downloader of the billionth app.

I'm with the rest of you in thinking that each download over the period of time was an entry, not that you just had to be the billionth. So how would any of the write-in applicants have won?

i always use the http://www.secondapps.com/neogaf/ app someone provided earlier this year. it's a great way of browsing gaf but i can't remember who set it up :( actualy not sure if you can post using it... still, great for browsing when you're stuck waiting somewhere...

it's ckohler. he deserves major props for continuing to update it to make it easier to use.

It was. Any app downloaded between April 10th and the billionth app was an entry if I am remembering the official rules properly.

That's what it seemed like, but http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/04/24appstore.html says the kid with the billionth download won it all.

I was also under the impression that the awards were for separate winners, not just one guy.

I guess Apple was being really disingenuous. They either implied that any download could win (and I guess technically it COULD have been the billionth), just to accelerate downloads, or that press release is a bungle. Shame, be cause I was under the impression any entry starting from the 10th could win meaning it was a random draw, but seeing as I never entered nearer to the billionth, I had no chance at all :(. Also, I don't see how filling in a form should entitle you to an entry - does it 'count' as a download? Because technically, they haven't downloaded a billion.

Fuck that, I specifically remember the page saying something like "Download an app and automatically be entered a chance to win, 25 entries limit per person". It said nothing about having to be the 1 billionth download.

I'm guessing they had the rules somewhere in fine print at the bottom, but they sure made that misleading as hell.

Offical Rules of Countdown to a Billion said:
Sweepstakes. Sponsor is the sole judging organization whose decisions as to the operation of the Sweepstakes and the selection of the potential winner are final and binding in all matters related to the Promotion. The prize will be awarded for the entry (either through an app download or through the non-purchase online entry) sent immediately following the download of the 999,999,999th app. The potential winner will be determined by the order of the entries received. In the event that more than one entrant would be a winner based on the simultaneous timing of entries, one entrant will be randomly selected from those entrants as the winner. Each entrant’s chances of winning are dependent upon the number of eligible entries received.
It's pretty clear with this wording here, but the way they worded all the parts before it seemed to imply otherwise.

Yeah, that sucks the ball. 99% of the population would have taken that as meaning you're in with a chance for downloading any app at any time.

But, I have my Macbook Air now. I've got it mostly set up... Just doing the iPhone re-sync stuff after restoring everything from a PC. It has been rather painless so far.

I'm also really impressed with the keyboard on this thing. It's more enjoyable to type on than the keyboard I used on my old desktop.

And, I had no idea how much noise that old desktop created. I just turned it off, with the end goal being this Air replaces it. The house sounds too quiet. It's really quite eery. But then, the old desktop was a fucking monster:

This is one reason I got an iMac years ago. I lived in a loft and I heard my desktop fans spinning all day long. I couldn't take it anymore. The iMac is silent.

I just got an iPod Touch, my first Apple product and I'm pretty impressed so far. Does anybody have a link to a list of best apps or games? Everything I've found was written in 2008, there's gotta be more recent lists.

For all you people that hate the built in Weather.app as much as I do:

WeatherBug got a big update today. There are a bunch of new features. They also added advertisements to the app, and released an ad-free version called WeatherBug Elite with more features. It's only 99 cents right now. It's far and away my favorite weather app, and now it's even better.

The built-in weather app is so damn lame. I moved it to the last screen and don't use it. I have the weather channel app and it has what I need.

What makes it so lame?

I know it's sometimes not accurate (but that could be a region thing - I believe it gets its reports form Yahoo), but I think it's a nice clean interface. I really appreciate simple apps.

I took a look at WeatherBug, but there seems to be too much going on. I don't need a super accurate forecast, just something to give me an idea (I've lived in coastal cities where no weather report can give you an accurate forecast all the time).

The only thing that would be nice would be remembering what the last report was.

:lol It makes me feel like an oldie that this question has started getting on my nerves too. Honestly there are just too many apps and games to list the 'best'. Now if you were looking for a app to handle a specific function... And there is no easy way (that I know off) to list the apps currently loaded on one's phone or that has been downloaded on one's account. Anyway you'll get better answers asking that question in The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Thread (search for Stoney Mason's awesome genre review posts as well).

I had it on my first page because of the weathericon hack (makes the weather icon display the current weather like the calender icon displays the current date) but I find myself never opening it. It's lame because it feels like a weather report not a weather forecast app. i never get a sense of when the highs or lows will be during the day, when exactly it might rain etc. It's much too simple

For me, there's not enough info for precipitation.

looking at the icon for the next day, a rain cloud can represent either 50% chance of scattered showers or a 100% chance of a huuuge rainstorm. there's no way to tell the difference.

I use weathereye, which is canada's weather network app and it gets a big thumbs up from me. gives me hourly, weekly and short term (a couple days) forecasts and has a nice, clean UI as well.

Ah, I see, thanks. Well, I generally don't trust forecasts (perhaps because I rely on the crappy Apple weather widgets, :lol), so I tend to look at an overall forecast for several days, just to get a feel. I don't need it to tell me what weather is like outside right now.

Yeah, I wish it could give the weather on the icon like the calendar app too.

That said, I don't like getting redundant apps, so I rely on Apple's versions generally. When Apple's voice recorder comes out, I'll probably remove the one I'm (not) using.

Help! Wife's parents are kicking her off their verizon account ASAP. We had been planning on getting her an iPhone when they come out in early July.

In order to port her number we have to get her something. I want to just add her to my AT&T account now without a contract / using her hardware discount, but I don't trust AT&T to honor that whenever the new iPhone hits.

Anyone have any ideas on a smart way to port her number for a few months while staying eligible for a new iPhone?

If you have an older AT&T phone, you can simply activate her on that. You'll probably have to pay a small activation fee, but she won't be "in-contract". Otherwise, you can pay the out-of-contract price on a new phone, but for everything except the cheapest candybars it tends to be on the expensive side.

Pay as you go, maybe?

Don't have one handy. I figured I'd have to pick one up second-hand, since there's no point paying full price for a new phone I'll use for 3 months.

Can you port a number to a pay-go phone?

Do you guys use any screen protectors that you can recommend? I just bought some anti-glare screen protectors that were easy to put on and have a smooth feel, but it makes the display look all hazy. It's not too bad with dark colors, but on predominantly white backgrounds, the effect is terrible. Do all screen protectors give this hazy, speckled look to the display or is it just because these are anti-glare?

I don't use a screen protector.
But I can tell you that after two years of abuse the only thing not scratched on my iPhone is the screen.
