Do you guys use any screen protectors that you can recommend? I just bought some anti-glare screen protectors that were easy to put on and have a smooth feel, but it makes the display look all hazy. It's not too bad with dark colors, but on predominantly white backgrounds, the effect is terrible. Do all screen protectors give this hazy, speckled look to the display or is it just because these are anti-glare?

No, there are a 'glossy' type as well as the anti-glare. Don't remember the brand name but they work great and you cant even tell they are there.

since i'm eligible for a new at&t phone in august....

has there been any info or whatever about the new iphone model? all i've seen is that they're working on background apps, but is there any new info? bet there isn't, since it's obviously under-wraps.

There's been solid info about the camera being upgraded. Not too exciting imo, but that's some info that's leaked.

At this point there's little doubt that a new iPhone model (possibly two) will at least be announced in June. Now the Commercial Times have chimed in with a report saying that components from Taiwan-based suppliers have begun shipments as Apple (or its China-based assemblers, rather) readies for a "June launch" pegged by said suppliers to reach about 2-3 million units per quarter. A phone that looks to be fitted with a 3.2 megapixel still / video CMOS camera, digital compass (magnetometer), possibly 802.11n WiFi, more storage, and all the MMS, copy/paste, and push-notifications you can shake a gesticulating finger at. Assuming all the firmware sleuthing and rumors are true, of course.

I'd be surprised by the compass, because it's obviously an answer to the G1. I feel like there are a lot of direct responses to the Pre and Android going on with the iPhone and I didn't expect Apple to feel the need to care or respond, kinda like Nintendo with the Wii. Guess not.

you think they would bother changing the look or the form-factor of the phone? i'm not complaining about the current one, but i wonder how they could make that one look obsolete by comparison...

I won't buy it until it has 5mp.

Does the iphone have gps that doesnt require a net connection?

The chance that they'll change the form factor is not likely. The first revision was simply thinner chrome frame and different color back, so it's not easy to decide what they will do, but if I had to say I'd say it would be another subtle revision. The chrome border will probably be tweaked again, the phone will be thinner, and the back will get modified in some way, especially if they give the camera flash. That's really all I'd expect to see change. It's going to look like the iPhone.

I'd like to see a more sharp edged design but Apple's all about the rounded edges. I wouldn't hold my breath for a slide out keyboard or any other form factor changes.

one more stupid question:

do all the photos taken by an iphone get geotagged automatically in iphoto's places feature?

Not sure if this is what you're looking for but it uses A-GPS, so it requires a network connection for cell tower locations and all that nonsense.

I'm pretty sure my iPhone 3G can get GPS data without a cell connection.

Yup they do, and it works great. I only wish my digital camera supported geotagging too. Hopefully iPhoto 09's release will start a movement in that area.

so im on a jailbroken iPhone 2g running fw 2.1

as of 4 days ago I get a blank text message from nobody, from odd dates, immediately after i check my voicemail like so:

I believe that's correct. It just tries to get extra info from wifi and cellular connections when present, but that also can slow it down imo.

New Gear from Apple and Verizon Wireless?

Verizon Wireless is warming to the idea of an Apple (AAPL) partnership. Verizon Wireless is in talks with Apple to distribute two new iPhone-like devices, BusinessWeek has learned. Apple has created prototypes of the devices, and discussions reaching back a half-year have involved Apple CEO Steve Jobs, according to two people familiar with the matter.

One device is a smaller, less expensive calling device described by a person who has seen it as an "iPhone lite." The other is a media pad that would let users listen to music, view photos, and watch high-definition videos, the person says. It would place calls over a Wi-Fi connection. One of these devices may be introduced as early as this summer, one person says...

Gives some weight to the rumors from earlier this year; an iPhone 'lite' would be a workaround for the "exclusive" AT&T contract. Neither product sounds compelling to me. Maybe if the 'media pad' was a tablet (i.e. packed a stylus, ha) and included handwriting recognition and an ebook reader I'd be hyped.

GPS doesn't require a network connection at all - never has.

As for 5MP, the number of megapixels a camera has means almost nothing in relation to image quality. All I'm hoping for are better optics and some form of optical zoom (3x would be cool though unlikely) and a non-LED flash.

well, technically if you want to see where you are on a map, as opposed to just lat and long coords, you need the net connection to google maps...

i suppose we'll see several standalone GPS apps with built in maps as of 3.0

What's bad about an LED flash?

Indeed. There have been times where I have lost connection to the internets, but the GPS will still show my perfectly located blue glowing orb. But just floating on a grey space, because it couldn't load in the map in the background.

Low voltage LED flashes are a real half-assed flash solution. For a GOOD flash solution on a camera phone you want a xenon flash. I'm sure if you search the net you'll find some comps between the two.

There's one available now, it just doesn't have turn by turn. I can't remember the name of the app, but Alex Lindsay has pimped it several times on Macbreak Weekly. Costs $100 and requires around a gig for all the maps, if I recall.

EDIT: I found it, G-Map East and G-Map West, $24.99 each. it's split into 2 apps, one for the east half of the country, one for the other.

That is if you depend on Google Maps for your map implementation. There are a number of professional applications and 'fleet management' solutions that don't rely on google maps and instead use their own internal maps.

That said, GPS 'technically' does not rely on a network connection - just open sky. Its Google Maps that relies on a network connection.

god dammit. why does the iphone suck so bad? i had it crashed on me so many times, had to restore it least 10 times in the past 18 months and at 4 visits to the apple store to get it fixed or looked at.

and now tonight while trying to recharge my iphone on my pic, i get this:

24oujwy.jpg

it seems all my mp3s on my iphone are now classified as "other". Great!

god dammit if there is any other cell phone with a decent google map ad that doesn't suck, pleaes let me know so i can walk into the AT&T store and tell them to f*ck themselves and cancel my contract.

btw does anyone want to buy a used iphone for cheap?

These Apple/Verizon conversations better come to a conclusion and an announcement soon, otherwise the refreshed iPhones will come out and effectively lock me in my contract for another 2 years.

...Verizon I want to be on your network, stop being greedy motherfuckers and let Apple do their shit with you.

I'm going to guess that you've been messing with your iPhone in ways you're not supposed to for it to be in that state. That's by far one of the worst stories about an iPhone I've heard.

My phone has been randomly going into airplane mode.....
3 times yesterday. I'll just pull it out of my pocket, see the plane, and groan.

You don't really need a screen protector to protect from scratches.
Everything else on the phone gets dinged up and scratched like crazy save for the screen (but it can/does happen).

I bought a screen protector (the only good one is the anti-glare one from the Apple store) because I was tired of the streaks and fingerprints on the glass.
Every other screen protector is trash from what I've seen save for this one.

No avatars, no dice.

I imagine it lets you make posts through the app as well versus just view?

Not at the minute. They have an update page where they say it's coming. I really would buy it not if I were you (I just got too curious) but if they DO come through with what they're saying, it should be a cool app.

You're my man on the inside, Dave! I'm counting on you!

I would like to compose some music on my iphone. It will mostly be simple melodies for use in video-games. Can anyone recommend any apps for music composition?

My original iphone earphones died. Well, not really. But the rubber outer rings came off and that meant they wouldn't stay in my ears anymore. It was driving me absolutely crazy trying to listen to music. Not only was it harder to hear because they'd just fall out of my ear and rest in the lower ear area. But I couldn't turn it up because the noise leakage of the earphones were bad enough inside the ear, let alone outside. Before the rubber ring issue turned up though, these things were driving me batshit insane anyway:

1. The sticky rubber cable it uses. It would get caught on fucking anything and everything because of its sticky texture. It was like it was magnetized and grabbed anything near it just to piss me off and, sometimes, pull the damn things out of my ears.

2. Noise leakage. I had one dude who sat next to me on the train start singing one of the songs I was listening to. And it wasn't even being played loud.

3. Even with the rubber rings on the buds being there they never really fit in my ear properly and I'd always have to shove them in further every so often.

These 3 issues would piss me off daily. But I stuck with them just to save some money. But now the rubber rings have come off I had a great excuse to finally bite on some good ones.

So I did some research, and eventually settled on the Apple In-Ear earphones. A rather boring conclusion to my research I must admit. But they rated very highly on review sites and were at least half the price of similar rated ones, so I really couldn't think of any reason not to buy.

I've used them for a little while now and I have to say. They are a thousand times better than the original iphone earphones. They sound markedly better (much broader tonal range and I'm hearing sounds I hadn't heard in my music before), they stay in my ear, the cable isn't a sticky rubber texture, and there's no noise leakage.

For AU$110 I'm incredibly satisfied.

I've gone through three sets of Apple iPhone ear buds. Whatever glue they use just falls apart. And on the EDGE phone, the jack keeps falling apart too

I recently replaced my Apple headphones too (just cause). And got some of these;

sennheiser-mm50_1.jpg

Sennheiser MM 50, has the clicker and mic for the iPhone too. They rock. Only $99AU too!

I've had the Apple in ear phones since they launched, and they have held up beautifully. The case works great, and they sound fantastic. Excellent purchase.

The newer "premium" Apple IEMs are actually very good because they utilize a dual-driver design. Great SQ though (IMO) slightly overpriced at MSRP.

For those in the market for a set that has similar controls, I highly recommend you check out the NuForce NE-7M IEMs; they're made to work with the iPhone (and Touch 2G) allowing to you both answer calls and skip around or pause tracks with the mic button (via single/double/triple clicks). They also have amazing SQ, rivaling higher-priced IEMs (they retail at $50 MSRP) so they're a good choice even for other players that can't use the mic/button functions.

I just upgraded from my NE-7Ms to a set of Turbines, but I still consider the NE-7M one of the best IEM purchases out there right now. Very highly recommended.

Hmm.... this could throw a wrench in some of my plans. I might have some competition where I hadn't found any before.

Their current draft is a bit uninspired it looks like, but I'm sure they'll improve it. I'll be interested to see how they're doing rich text in posts.
