Odd. I have never restored either my iPod Touch, nor my iPhone. Do people who have problems just a vocal minority, or does jailbreaking really cause issues?

Both actually. I've never had to restore in the almost two years I've owned the phone. I'm convinced that some of it is people restoring when they don't actually need to, as well.

It does in fact cause problems, the severity of which depend entirely on what the OS is doing and what the various jailbreak components are trying to do.

Well, mine has been jailbroken since I got it a year and a half ago, and I've never had a problem at all. The fact that I've never had a problem is the reason I've never mentioned that I've never had a problem.

It's only natural for the anecdotal evidence to reflect the problem phones, not the ones that work fine. Although, I'm sure jailbroken phones that work fine are in the majority, because if they weren't, nobody would do it.

Anyone have any suggestions for apps and/or uses of an iPhone while working out? I took it with me on a stationary bike yesterday and realized (a) there's probably excellent weight/workout tracking apps and (b) I could probably use the device for something more entertaining (and motivating) than music alone while on cardio machines.

Any suggestions are much appreciated, of course.

Check out iFitness as a good workout tracking app. Only $2 and it's constantly updated. You can also define your own exercises and create your own routines.

As for using while on a cardio machine, I like to load it up with videos. I'll usually grab some video reviews from GameTrailers and watch those while I use an elliptical.

So quick question. Is it possible to play and use all the apps the iPhone has on an iPod Touch? Cause I really don't want to use one as a phone (N97 is gonna be my new phone) but there are so many apps (Photoshop for example) on iPhone that I'd love to have.

Most, but not all. Any app that requires iPhone-exclusive features (GPS, microphone, camera, etc.) will not be able to use those features on the Touch. Otherwise you'll be golden.

Good call on both counts, thank you. Picked up iFitness and will give it a go later today.

Oddly enough I've never once put a video on this thing, and didn't really think to. That should do the trick nicely.

Edit: iFitness is awesome, wow. Figured it would just be used for logging workouts, but I love that it has programs and descriptions for most (all?) of the exercises in there. Pretty exciting actually.

Great. I'm really looking forward to be using photoshop everywhere I go :D

Constantly is an understatement. It's up to version 9.2 now, and I've had it since the initial release. Some times it feels like there's an update every 2 days. The dudes put a lot of work into it I'll give them that.

What exactly do I need to do to get my iPhone replaced? Mine has a crooked glass/screen alignment :(

I know I need to go to an Apple store, but should I go to one with a Genius bar or something?
What I mean is that, is there any advantages to going to one with a Genius bar? I don't want to deal with a regular worker who wants to tell me my phone is fine and not replace it because they can't see the problem.

Also, is there any way to save a screen protector?

replacements are handled at the genius bar. I had my original replaced due to a hairline crack in the plastic.

you need to make an appointment beforehand for the genius bar from any one of the Macs within the store (or online from the Apple.com/retail site)

So I pretty much totally ruined my iphone. I jumped right into a swimming pool with it in my pocket.

What are the best(aka cheapest) options for replacement?

How about keep the phone, and replace your common sense.

Why would jump in a pool with 1) your pants, and 2) Your phone in your pants? :lol

I was wearing swim trunks, but totally forgot to set my stuff aside before jumping in. I feel like such a dumbass, but I can't live much longer without my phone.

If it involved a girl, I can see why.

Hmm.

Damage control:

Give the broken iPhone to the girl and say, "well, I basically sacrificed this for you."

Well, live and learn, I suppose. Dry it off totally - like days to a week. But I guess the only option is to get a new phone. I think AT&T may allow the purchase of a new phone and put it back to the account?

I'm going to guess that you've been messing with your iPhone in ways you're not supposed to for it to be in that state. That's by far one of the worst stories about an iPhone I've heard.

uh no, it's not jailbroken. as a matter of fact, it's my second iphone since i got the 3g last august. the speaker died with the first one after about 4 months. my current iphone has this problem where after you unlock it after it auto-locks, the touch screen is unresponsive. i have to hit the reset button twice before the screen will work again. and this has been happening since i got it in december.

this problems happens every 2-3 weeks and last about a day. of course i've scheduled several appointments with the genius bar, but on the day of the appointment, the problem goes away, so i can't really show them the problem. even if i just tell them the problem, they're just gonna say "have you tried restoring your iphone"?

and then i would be arrested for punching a dork in the face.

force the issue at the genius bar till they give you another phone. hopefully you don't have to be a dick about it but if they refuse... then be a dick about it.

Not all iphones are fucked up like yours is. you got bad luck but there's no reason to put up with faulty hardware.

Just got my iPhone.

Now tell me, what's the best Audio recording application out there, and what about Video Recording?

Jailbreak iphone question

on the hack site it says: (Please ensure that you have upgraded iTunes to iTunes 8.0.2)

Now I just updated iTunes to the NEW version 8.1.1.10.......

does this matter?? the firmware on the iPhone is still 2.2.1 as it says it should be.

Let it dry out completely, take it to an Apple Store and say it stopped working, no idea why

AT&T service blows in Vegas. Argh.

iPhone is a perfectly functional phone brought down by a mediocre network if you're in the U.S. Even Japan's worst carrier's service for the iPhone is far beyond AT&T. smh

Thats one of those things that should be kind of funny, but it's not because I may have squirted a real tear if that happened to me.

Oh for fuck's sake. Do not do this.

Almost every phone these days have a moisture detection sticker that will change colors if it gets wet, precisely so people can't try and play dumb after they dump their phone in a pool.

And look at that, so does Apple!

Bricfa, have you considered getting a refurbished unit?

I have a friend that works Apple retail so I get to hear all the stupid stories about how people try to say they didn't get their phone soaked when they clearly did. One guy even tried to cover the litmus strip with white-out so they wouldn't be able to tell.

Is this confirmed?

It's not "confirmed" (Apple doesn't work that way) but it's heavily rumored enough to the point where it's extremely likely. I believe the biggest tip-off is that new iPhone model numbers are referenced in the iPhone OS 3.0 beta software. And Apple updated the iPhone last summer so speculation is the new referenced models will hit this summer.

For reals. I was at the Cubs game at Wrigley Field yesterday and I was trying to check out my fantasy team and watch some replays from the game and...nothing. It said I had 5 bars of 3G coverage but no internet functions would load up. Att's network is so shitty when there's a bunch of people in one place.

No one knows anything and no one will know anything until it's announced. Wait.

I was kind of asking the people who went from the first one to the 3G, as I figured maybe it would be similar. But thanks.

MrOctober said:
The 3G was my first iPhone if I'm in a two year contract how does Apple/AT&T handle people who want to upgrade to the newest one?

You renew the contract for another two years when you activate your new phone.

MrOctober said:
There's no extra charge or anything?

As in, a fee you pay for changing contracts midstream? No. That was not the case with the 3G. You pay for activation of the new phone (plus taxes) and continue as you had been but with a new contract. Specifically in regards to the iPhone, the iPhone 3G plans are more expensive than the original iPhone plans. I don't know what types of plans they will offer with the new iPhone. From AT&T's perspective, they are happy to lock you in for as long as they can.

That's the way I used to think but I had Verizon and they would charge you to get a new phone even if you wanted to buy a phone and re-up your contract. They basically turned down money from me on a few occasions. I'm glad to hear AT&T isn't as stupid.

The first iPhone was $500. Since AT&T wasn't paying for your phone over the course of 2 years of billing you, they didn't care if you switched to the 3G. The phone was paid for upfront when you bought it.

The 3G is $200 and AT&T is paying for part of the price as long as you're in a contract with them.

It'll likely be the same situation as with switching from the first iPhone, but really, no one knows what will happen. If something has to do with Apple and it's not on their website, no one knows, so anything you read on a forum is just guessing.
