my friend is being a retard and said she read online that there's a new iphone coming out july 17th.... i'm saying hell NO....

Are you serious? Are you being serious right now?

Is this your serious face?

Even if there is a new iPhone coming in July, what's the point of selling her current one now? Online prices for the older models have stayed pretty high so it's not like there's a particular rush. I sold my original EDGE iPhone after I bought a 3G on launch day and still got $450 for it. Besides, she'd go without a phone for a month or more just on the rumor that Apple "might" introduce a new one in July? That's pretty stupid.

I don't think this guy runs with the smartest crowd.

His post did make me laugh though. I've been told by many AT&T kiosks that no new iPhone is coming.

So what? I had contacts that worked inside Rogers that told me there were no plans to launch the iPhone in Canada in 2008, that sure was wrong wasn't it?

that's the point, I think. people working at the telephone companies have no idea what's going on but like to talk authoritatively on the subject

Exactly, some people should do a little research before they start talking out of their asses about it. Especially those employeed by AT&T, unless they would lie in order to sell their remaining 3G iPhones.

ARGH!

My OG iPhone has just succumbed to the Dead Strip bug (more info)

I can't get past the lock screen, because the 4,5,6 number keys don't respond. I'm going to try to restore, but I'm not hopeful.

I'll run to the Genius bar tomorrow and cross my fingers that I can just get a loaner. I can't wait for the fact that I have OS 3.0 installed to completely screw me over.

If anyone wants a new release of MobileGAF, ship me your iPhones! :)

Part 2!

I'm at the Apple Store now. Apparently my phone fell into a magical secret range of serial numbers that get extended replacements for dead strips on the touch screen. Brand new EDGE phone--w00t!

Erasing the data isn't going as well as I'd like, though. The sheet to erase the phone button won't hit, and since it has 3.0 I had to ask the guy to plug the old phone into my own machine since it has 3.0b5 on it. (And older versions of iTunes can't restore)

I honestly can't believe how accomodating this Genius has been. I've probably had about 15-25 repairs in the last five years and this ranks near the top in terms of positive experience.

Get the guy's name, then when they announce the new iPhone go back to him and say "I guess you know fuck all about what's going on huh????!" :lol

They probably don't think they're lying, they're probably just being loyal tools. (Most people wouldn't "lie" per se for a wage job, but many would definitely be willing tools.)

What I mean to say is there is probably an internal memo or communication that occurs inside channels at the carrier that indicate there isn't anything new coming out and to communicate that to customers. The carrier in that case would be lying in order to clear their inventory and maximize their subscriber headcount, but they're probably the only ones really complicit in this.

/speculation

Anyone have an Iphone from Rogers in Canada? If so how do you like their plans, what plan do you have and how much do you pay?

I am thinking about getting one, but everything seems very costly.

FYI, you don't need to get the iphone plan (or any smartphone plan) to get the phone at Rogers. I picked up my phone when Rogers was running their $10 a month plan (Manitoba only) so I signed on to that. My plan has no substantial data built in, so I turned off the 3G on the phone and had rogers turn off the EDGE from their end, and now I just use the WiFi when I'm at home, work and anywhere there's a hotspot.

Probably not the preferable option for most people, but my point is that you can still builld whatever plan you want and still get the phone. They don't advertise this fact, you have to ask. The only thing was I had to pay $50 more for the phone, but with an 8GB Touch running at $229 CAD, the $249 iPhone was still a steal. I got an MP3 player and a cell phone for only a few bucks more than the mp3 player itself.

Hmm...perhaps I should be worried then.

So far in only one situation this dead strip thing happened to me. Someone was calling and I couldn't swipe to answer the call for the life of me....the thing would not let me swipe!

After the call person disconnected, I was able to swipe without an issue, however this once instance scared me a bit...and even more so now that I know this potentially isn't a one-off issue.

...really this is just a secret reason to validate buying the new iPhone that comes out next month :lol

If it fixes itself later it's more likely your problem was software-layer.

I've heard that the dead strip issue is the result of corroded points of contact between the screen and the touch screen doohickey. If it failed once and worked fine after, it's more likely you just had a nonresponsive app.

Gah i want a Iphone but holding out to see if there is a new one in July. Anyone know how much it is to get out of a sprint contract i still have about a year left.

Any guess's to what the new pricing might be for new customers for AT&T?

Take July 17th and identical pricing to the bank (meaning $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB)

Anyone know how much longer after that new iPod Touches show up?

Every September. Every year. Over and over and over again.

Scott Bourne at MacBreak Weekly mentioned he spoke to a Verizon employee, who said that there may be an iPhone/Verizon related announcement in June.

We know that AT&T has a 5 year exclusive contract with Apple, but there's speculation that the Verizon "iPhone" may be a different model.

This happened a lot to me on earlier versions of 3.0b, I think b1-b3, were the most troublesome. It's definitely a software problem.

The gyroscope in my phone has died. Well, if it had died that wouldn't be as big a problem. But it's permanently stuck in the sideways position. Browsing web sites and changing music has become a nightmare.

Strangely, this has happened with 0 physical damage to the device. I've had it for nearly a year now and have never dropped it. Not once.

I wonder if I can live with this until the new iPhone comes out... There could be a chance for a free upgrade here....

Is 5 the most recent 3.0 beta, by the way? I'm having pretty bitchy problems with Safari on that one.

ha mine likes to have HUGE delays in skipping/pausing...like 20+ seconds. Weird thing is it seems to happen during the same songs. This was a fresh restore/upgrade from beta 4 as well. It's BEYOND f'ng annoying, not to mention makes me look like an idiot when someone needs to tell me something and I need to take my headphones out and ask them again what they said.

I listened to that this afternoon. I'm not sold on his source being that great, but we'll see.

Assuming he's right, if it's a mini or nano, Verizon can fuck off. If it's a full featured iPhone, I'm switching as soon as possible.

Probably not the iPhone, more likely the iPad Tablet thing.

Heh, 3.0 is going to be a huge pain in the rear for you, now that almost all the Apple apps support landscape mode :lol

When was the last time you saw Apple perform this behavior? Apple will knowingly launch push in a less than stellar state for everyone. You'd be surprised how many times they've done this with the OS thus far. Apple is a 'lock step deploy' environment. They push it all out at the same time across the entire platform all at once. It is extremely rare for them to push out an update for one platform early at the 'expense' of another.
What other platform has Apple ever released that's allowed them to make that kind of decision? EVER? The only examples I see are of the option you're saying they'll follow. The MobileMe launch, throwing new customers buying for the iPhone functions with existing customers, with servers being unable to support the load. Remember how many people never renewed their .mac subscriptions because of that fiasco? How much it cost Apple to give out all those free months of service as an appeasement? Think Apple wants another PR nightmare to deal with that they can actually avoid? Everyone's always saying Apple is concerned about their bottom line, and what you're suggesting jeopardizes it immensely.

But whatever, I'm thinking of this as though Apple actually bothers to plan ahead and acknowledge potential negative effects of their decisions. And I guess their record on that speaks for itself.

Apple is only supporting a dozen or so basic Mac hardware models at a time, and Software Update identifies which updates to pull for the specific hardware.

So to answer your question, "Mac OS X" for about 8 years now. If they want to, they can hold back an OS X update in Software Update for a specific range of serial numbers.

Who's your provider? I've not heard of someone just dropping you because you're out of contract...

Heh, no, you are just month to month after your contract ends :lol

If you can afford it, buy a cheap as chips Pay As You Go phone from one of the major retailers - spend no more than £20.

Run that for the next few weeks and get the new iPhone.

It's best to hold out for six weeks and get the latest and greatest, you'll be comfortable in the knowledge that, for the next year, you'll be bang up to date with iPhone hardware.

So... I think my iphone just bricked... Had an old 4gb, was trying to update the firmware, tried for four hours actually. Wasn't working, then I tried re connecting the phone to itunes and now itunes is not recognizing it. I'm on T-mobile, this gay that phone can brick via software... oh well I had it for a year, I usually upgrade after a year, but I am poor and its right before e3...

Seriously I don't know what to do... No saving this phone?

Edit: Itunes sees the iphone again! ok maybe there is hope. Can someone please help me?? I need this phone up and running again before I fly out to e3 on Monday :(

Help.....?

I think where I went wrong was letting itunes update automatically to whatever is the most current firmware. After that I've tried Pwnage, ijailbreak and ziphone we no luck (I am on a mac). should I be trying to do this with a pc? thats how i originally hacked it. every time i've tried to pwnnage i get a error from itunes when installing the custom firmware.

Q: Was this phone unlocked via the original iPhone unlock in order for you to get it on to T-Mo?

Q: Was this phone unlocked via the original iPhone unlock in order for you to get it on to T-Mo?

Just posted this on howard forums.. Might be good to post here and better understand my issue:

Ok... I tried for four hours last night to fix my iphone to no luck. So I created this thread in hopes someone here might be able to help me (note: I'm using a mac).

A little bit about my phone: I bought this iphone when it first came out its, a 2g 4gb iphone and I've been using on T-mobile since I originally purchased with no problems. Now I from here I might not be totally accurate but I will try, I think the last firmware was 2.0.2? I was currently unable to download any current apps or games thats on itunes (hence part of the reason I wanted to upgrade to the most current firmware).

When trying to upgrade I decided to use Pwange Tool. But I believe I messed up. I let itunes update itself and my iphone to the most current iphone firmware (before using any hacking tool, this bringing my phone to current factory settings I assume). The I proceeded to use Pwnage Tool and after I used Pwange Tool to create my own custom file (that I attempted to install via itunes), put my iphone in DFU mode, used itunes to attempt to install, I continue to get errors and can't upgrade to the hacked firmware. So now I have a At & t phone I can't get unlocked. I tried using Ziphone but it seems to just lock up on me or doesn't see my phone.

So any help would be great, I leave for e3 this Monday and I'd really like a working iphone by then. I am pretty poor right now and can't afford to get a new phone, I'm hoping I didn't brick it and I'll still be able to fix this. Should I be using a PC? I'm very noobish when it comes to hacking my iphone, last time I unlocked I used iliberty with no problems (when I use to have a pc).
