Hit-whoring. The naming scheme is totally inconsistent, as is capitalization and stuff.

It is interesting that there's now a rumor mill consensus about video. I guess we'll call that a lock.

that Iphone capitalization error must be pissing off someone at Apple really bad. :lol
That's just a distributor's list, so quite frankly it is possible that it was just some random dude that typed it and didn't care.

I'm just hoping the 3.0 firmware fixes the wifi problem people like me are having. Don't feel like dealing with support/genius bar.

What WiFi problem are you having? I've had to replace two defective iPhone EDGEs (on 3.0) that were dropping WiFi signal as soon as the phone warmed up.

The same problem everyone else having issues with wifi since upgrading to 2.2.1 has been having. No one is certain what exactly is causing the problem. My wifi has been horribly spotty at best for the past couple months. It'll connect for a couple minutes at a time at home, then drop out. I get 3g fine at home so it hasn't been a huge issue for me yet.

After it drops, does it ever reconnect during the same session? Mine would only connect if I left the phone idle for an hour or so. (but even then, only once or twice pulled real data down)

in any case, I barely had to explain the problem to the Genius Bar guys to get it swapped out. And 3.0 definitely didn't solve it.

The menu itself seems really stupid even without the new entries.

They have:

"iPhone 8 GB" (with space)
"iPhone 3G - 8GB Black" (no space, and there isn't a white one?)
"iPhone 3G" (generic next to all these specific models?)

Blech.

What does your list have?

Just to point out, there is no white 3G 8 GB.

The last 4 may be the 'new' (meaning possibly just new names), as one of the rumours going around is 4 models.

I know that.

and there's someone at Apple who's more pissed at that error than at the leak (if it's real)

More or less. Yeah, I know Apple seems to be replacing them right away, just been really friggin busy, and you know, :effort:

Is video strictly a new iPhone feature or a feature of 3.0 in general?

Depends on what video refers to. Actually, is it in 3.0 software? If not, it's probably locked to the new iPhone as an incentive. Possibly the older iPhones couldn't handle the processing stuff.

Looking one page back it definitely appears to be an incentive. I believe the 3G has no problems handling video when jaillbroken.

Jailbroken video has a terrible framerate.

It's a technical limitation for the official feature.

Yeah, I've seen the video from a JB video. It exists, and is better than nothing, but it isn't all that great.

Cycorder's video isn't that bad, I'd actually say the main problem is exposure/lighting rather than framerate.

Liu Kang Baking A Pie said:
It's pretty crap framerate as well as resolution: http://www.hackthatphone.net/mov/tigger2.mov

I imagine Apple thinks it needs to be 480p at 24 fps+ or they won't bother at all, and I can't blame them.
What? That's supposed to be bad? That's really good compared to some of the stuff you see on youtube. Considering Apple didn't wow anyone with a groundbreaking cell phone cam, I really doubt they would care to do so for video.

So... any idea on how many apps will be charging for upgrades to the 3.0 version? I'm guessing push notifications will be an excuse used to justify asking for payment...

There is no mechanism to charge for updates, and push notifications don't add any additional cost that would need to be made up.

at least one app currently in the app store is already using 3.0 features on 3.0 phones.

There, I said it.

Didn't they announce that app makers were going to be given ways to add content to their apps a la carte style, and could charge for them with 3.0?

I'm almost positive I heard this.

Yup, in app purchasing is a feature of 3.0.

So Iphone Video annuncement this Monday? Awesome! :D

Currently have the original Iphone w/ EDGE + scratches and after 2 years it's time for an upgrade ;O

Yeah, my iPhone is so beat up.
Back when it launched I thought it would be the most fragile device ever.

Any device that can endure 2 years of Jtwo's life is pretty damn awesome in my book.

improvements to the camera and having video chat would be so great. i just want a camera on this that i wouldn't mind making my only camera. (i'm not that picky, but improvements would be really great)

i cant wait until Apple stops selling the 3G. resale prices will shoot up, allowing me to upgrade for free once the Video is unlocked :D

in other words, anybody looking to sell their 3G, WAIT. the prices go up once supply goes away and people want an unlockable iPhone.

WWDC on the 8th? Nice. I'll wait with my phone purchase then. I'm either buying an iPhone or a HTC Magic... and right now I'm leaning towards the latter one, but 3.0 has some really nice features :)

If I were to sell mine, would it be possible to unlock it? I don't know how the process works, exactly. I want to be able to port my number when I upgrade and stuff. Do I wipe my harddrive, run some program, remove my SIM card, and put it on eBay, or what? I've never tried to sell a phone.

Apple to launch cut-price version of iPhone
Apple plans to introduce a cheaper version of its popular iPhone as soon as Monday, in a move that could dramatically increase the company’s share of the market for web-surfing devices, people familiar with the initiative said on Thursday.

Analysts said that the company wanted to show off either a $149 phone or a $99 phone, down from the current low end of $199 and still subsidised in exchange for an AT&T communications service contract.

“It’s either a $50 or a $100 cut,” said Morgan Stanley analyst Kathryn Huberty.

Citing a firm survey of consumers, she said that a $50 price cut could increase demand by 50 per cent and a $100 cut by 100 per cent.

Apple sells about 11 per cent of the world’s smart phones, trailing Nokia’s 41 per cent volume and Research in Motion’s 20 per cent, according to Gartner figures from the first quarter. Palm’s Pre was expected to go on sale later on Friday.

Apple declined to comment, although the company typically introduces major products at its developer conference, which begins on Monday with a keynote speech by senior vice-president and marketing chief Phil Schiller.

The anticipated new phone is likely to start production in July with the third version of the iPhone operating system, also expected to be released next week as a free upgrade for existing iPhone owners. The new software includes the ability to cut and paste text and to search for information inside multiple applications at the same time.

An even bigger impact on market share could come with new pricing from AT&T, which remains in an exclusive deal with Apple.

Randall Stephenson, AT&T chief executive, said last week that variable pricing for internet use would arrive eventually, charging heavy data users more and occasional users less.

Collins Stewart analyst Ashok Kumar said that he expects that to happen in the third quarter. Apple is the farthest ahead in the number of applications users can install on their phones. Most developers are working to create such software either for Apple alone or for Apple and Google’s Android, an open platform being adopted by multiple handset manufacturers, Ms Huberty said.
:( that's fucked up. I love AT&T for the unlimited data plan but their prices are already expensive as it is. Is it possible to use the iPhone on Sprint?

Aight, I'll wait then

I wonder what they consider heavy use. I'm generally between 200-400mb a month, but last month I got up to almost 1gb of data usage.

does pandora use a lot of data? cause that's all i could see using every day.

I really havent kept up, but I think if you upgraded to the most recent one the official Apple way, you might be out of luck for now. I think it upgraded the baseband and is not supported by the hackers yet, but they are constantly working on it.

If it is unlockable by then, you just back up your phone data/contacts if you want, restore it and unlock with a program, remove SIM and then craigslist/ebay. if you just use the same SIM on the next phone youll have the same number.

And I may have spoken too strongly, and dont wanna be responsible for people not able to sell their phones for high profit later. a quick look on ebay shows a 16gb used iphone for 350 and still going strong, so it may not be too much more later on. i'll probably wait myself though.

Highly doubt they'll kill unlimited. Just adding more tiers below it to gain more users.
The problem would be if the new tier pricing makes unlimited more expensive than it is now.

Which by the way they say it seems exactly what they're going to do. If it's unreasonable tiers where I have to pay more then I won't get an Iphone.

I will do what Ashong stated.
Sell my unlocked 3G and buy the new one, did the same thing last time.

He will never question Apple.

The $50-100 price cut is pretty meaningless unless it comes alongside a monthly fee price drop.

I mean a $50 cheaper iPhone over two years is a savings of like $2 per month. Whoaaaa!

There was a rumor going around not too long ago about AT&T considering dropping their monthly price by $10 or something. I hope it's true.
