I think I found a method to enable MMS and Tethering but I'm a bit hesitant on trying it since I don't totally understand it. Anyone brave enough to do some experimenting? :D If so, PM me and if it all works out we can post it publically.

There are a number of ways to do it. The one risk/problem that I discovered in doing it is that you can lose access to visual voicemail since many of those profiles either forget to enable that flag or force the vvmail password to reset.

just post it, i want to see what it involves before i try it

is it this

http://gizmodo.com/5202406/how-to-enable-mms-in-iphone-30-right-now
?

i heard that the put the sim in a phone capable of mms and send a few then go back to iphone works, maybe ill try tonight

Nope, it's an easier method then that but it involves running config file on the phone. The problem is it was setup for a carrier outside the US and it worked for them and has been modified to work on AT&T. So far tethering is confirmed to be working but the problem I have is the bitmask that they list in the config doesn't seem right to me so I haven't tried it yet.

There's a theory on how to get MMS working but I haven't found enough info on how the config files work to know how to add the right lines in.

Edit: Once we figure it out, it would simply be just running the file.

Since it sorta needs to be put together, I didn't want to post it publically until we had a confirmed method of doing it so that's why I wanted to keep it in PM until there was a definite way.

Also iTunes isn't needed at all with this method.

You will pay through the ass.

Text messages are .25 a piece I believe, the world traveller for AT&T is a fixed monthly price which will allow you to pay $1.69/minute as opposed to $2.29/minute. Pretty much when you leave the states, be sure to put your phone on airplane mode, then just activate wifi and use skype where you can. Be sure to buy skype wireless credits BEFORE you leave.

Texts are actually $0.50 to send, but regular domestic to receive. I think I'm just going to text all of my friends instead of call (easier for me anyway, since my Japanese suffers via telephony)

You can at least get a 100 international text package for $10 that'll cut down on the rate.

So AT&T is going to ship me my phone, has anyone ever had an iPhone shipped by AT&T and knows whether they require a signature? I'd love to not have it sit on my porch.

Holy shit what a day! I signed up for Bing's discount, spoke with Verizon to get my account information (to transfer my cell #), then tried to pre-order through the 35% cash back link. The AT&T site was CRAWLING...like loading a page ever 10 minutes or so. I just thought they were bogged down with orders so I tolerated it. I got half-way through it the first time and my cart timed out so I had to start again. The second time, I got all the way to the final screen where it says something like, "Your order won't be completed until you click PURCHASE."

So I clicked it, and then the site tells me that the order didn't work and that I should go to the store and buy from there. I was fucking livid! This was my first iPhone buying experience and I wasn't happy. Then I decided to restart my computer and modem just in case. I booted into Windows 7 and suddenly all the sites were flying again.

I used the Bing link and completed the preorder of a white 32GB iPhone 3GS. Now I'm wondering:

A) How long I'll have to wait for my new phone to arrive
B) How long until I get an email from Bing telling me I'm getting over $100 back.

Bottom line: I wasted over 4 hours in the ordering process. I was ready to give up, but it turned out to be my stupid internet connection.

Sorry you had a bad experience, but definitely keep blaming your internet connection. For once, AT&T is not to blame.

I'm curious about A & B for myself as well. Bing says it takes one or two days, and clearly AT&T has gotten a ton of preorders. I ordered mine early this morning, so I'm hopeful I'll only be delayed by a couple days, but at the worst case it could be a week or more before it ships.

Question for you guys, as I've never upgraded my phone before: I'm jumping from the original 8gb to the 32gb. Once I've activated the new phone, is it still possible to use the non-phone features of the old phone (music, video, web browsing, etc.)?

Woah woah woah. I'm going to give my iPhone EDGE to my wife, but even then it'll apparently trigger a 2-year contract! That seems ridiculous.

ATT said:
I have an original iPhone and would like to activate it. How does the monthly service cost?
A two-year service agreement is required to use the original iPhone or if you are already an AT&T customer, a renewed two-year service agreement.

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/specials/iphone-info.jsp#0faqSection1

My question to GAF is: regardless of such a contract, wouldn't she still be eligible to upgrade to an iPhone 3G at any time? It would seem absolutely outrageous if they turned down upgrade eligibility to anyone on an unsubsidized EDGE iPhone if it was offered freely when the 3G launched. Anyone know anything more about this?

You can use it without a SIM card in it, but you'll need a SIM in the old iPhone if you ever need to upgrade or restore firmware. I'd be a little suspicious that the phone would properly activate, even in this case, but AT&T claims this to be so.

So I am starting a new job on monday and they told me that I can either get a Blackberry or they will subsidize a data plan on a phone of my choice. Naturally, I thought this was a great time for me to look into the iphone.

I have traditionally been a Windows Mobile user, so I have a few questions that hopefully someone here can answer =). Please excuse my ignorance if these questions are dumb.

I thought I would get an Iphone and they told me they could set up a secure connection for my corporate email....

1. Can you sync your I-Phone calender to my exchange canlender? (So my work appointments/meetings will be on my phone)

2. I have a lot of MP3's but don't currently use iTunes. Can I easily place them on itunes to work on my new phone?

3. I plan on getting the Apple iPhone 3Gs, is there anything I should know about it's capabilities as a business phone?

Thanks guys!

That doesn't make sense, you'll have to buy the SIM card, $15 if i remember correctly, but you shouldn't have to sign a contract...

I guess I'll be dying inline on Friday :(

I guess I am going to make a list of all of the ATT store near my job, which is a ton of them including the version and t-mobile stores scatter everywhere there is a starbucks which is a lot.

Damn i wished i pre-ordered when i had the chance. I guess I'll show up at 5 am and check all the ATT stores.

Upgrade eligibility is strictly based off buying equipment, not a contract date, so she'd still be able to upgrade at any time. I've never seen anything about signing a new contract just to use an old iphone, doesn't make sense, especially considering all you have to do is update the IMEI to the iphone and add the data plan yourself, you don't have to do anything special.

Has anyone else started seeing problems with OS 3.0 installed?

-Podcasts lose their current position on iTunes sync much more frequently than they used to do
-Mail reading is a hell of a lot slower
-When you have a mail message open, exit Mail, and come back after receiving new messages the "X of Y" title at the top is always completely off.

For example:
-Have 20 messages in an email folder
-Open up 2nd item in the folder, title says "2 of 20"
-Exit mail
-Get 2 new e-mails, open Mail back up
-It should say "4 of 22", instead, it'll say something like "7 of 22". If I hit the up-arrow, it'll start skipping over read emails - to the 6th, 5th, the 4th I was just looking at, then the 3rd, and finally the two new emails

wtf? Pretty pathetic if these are truly new bugs introduced and not fixed by the official release next week.

I use my iPhone at work and yes it does sync your exchange calender with your phone. You can also read .doc attachments but you can't edit them (not that anyone would want to edit a document on their phone). Check the app store to see if it has any apps you may find useful.

And it won't help for work but there is a divine NeoGaf app for the iPhone from which you can now post directly. :D

Every search I've done indicates that it does start a new two year contract, even used. So far my hunch is that users will be upgrade eligible, but might be subject to an ETF if they drop.

1. Yes, the "I-Phone" can do that. But note that then you can only sync your calendar with Exchange (so you'll need to create a personal calendar at work to add non-work appointments to).

2. Yes. Just import them into iTunes and go.

3. If all you're looking for is a business phone, get the Blackberry. Like already noted you can read Office docs (word, excel, ppt), but can't edit. You can also sync your contacts with Exchange (note this has the save caveat as #1), but as long as you setup a mail account you can look up anyone's email from the GAL. It has some support for VPN. And of course an app store full of things... Like a decent Citrix app.

Oh well, since nobody PM'd me to help me figure out the method I learned. I guess I'll post it publically and hope nobody does anything bad to their phones.

First, grab this mobileconfig file:

http://andrew.harrison.org/uploads/misc/3Tether.zip

Now edit it to replace "3services" to "wap.cingular"

Save, and then email yourself the file.

Open the email then open the attachment. Tap install. It may warn you it's not authentic but just do it anyway and it will install it.

At that point you should have tethering enabled. People have confirmed this works.

Now there's speculation that you can get MMS to work through this method too. Someone suggested this for the mobile config:

<key>MMS</key>
<dict>
<key>GroupModeEnabled</key><true/>
<key>MMSC</key><string>mmsc.cingular.com</string>
<key>Proxy</key><string>66.209.011.032</string>
</dict>
</dict>
<key>DefaultsDomainName</key>
<string>com.apple.managedCarrier</string>
</dict>
</array>

Try at your own risk, but the tethering has been confirmed from a few people.

A) I ordered at night on the 11th and they said they'll ship it overnight and that I'll get it on or before this coming Friday. Seems like they're getting hammered now, so we'll see what happens.

B) Got mine the next morning, but once again, seems like they're getting hammered too, so that may be delayed. I'm not sure if it processes on non-business days either...

If you guys don't mind me asking.....what are your monthly bills on average? Trying to get a feel on the monthly after tax and things.

I was told that tax would be about 20% in IL (cook county.) I ended up ordering my phone from a different county (lake) and am hoping it'll be cheaper.

so $74.99 (450 rollover mins, unlimited data, 200 texts/month) + whatever your local tax is. you can check it out by state here, though it'll vary by county as well:
http://www.askstudent.com/money/cell-phone-taxes-by-state/

(not sure how current that list is)

Does anyone think there will be lines of people at the stores just like the iphone 3G launch?

my best buy was taking reserves for $50 down. They were stressing that it would be crazy, but I have a feeling that they'd be instructed to not say "meh, don't worry about it, come in whenever, we'll have plenty."

Is anybody here trying 3.0 with the iPhone 2G? How's it going?

http://soulified.com/iphone/

took like 10 seconds

already had 3.0 . just had to find itunes 8.20.10 *the link for that in that post is wrong, i had to get it on demonoid*

as far as apple turning it off. I doubt it. Because i have another phone that is on att that allows tethering. As of right now its part of the unlimited data, soon as they put tethering live, it will have its own plan

Oh man, I guess I'll avoid all apple stores, hopefully I can find a small hidden ATT store and buy one quick.

The shipping status on my iPhone 3GS order via the Apple Online Store has changed to "Prepared for Shipment"!! Only 5 days left! I haven't been this excited since I walked into the AT&T store two years ago and got my original iPhone.

:(

Mine still hasn't changed. Rumor is its going by distance of the factory?

How can I check the status of my order from AT&T's website? I don't have any login info yet, since... I'm not an AT&T customer yet. Hmm.

Edit: Nevermind, got it.

So, is there any confirmation on whether 3.0 breaks the yellowsn0w unlock for the iPhone 3G when updating? I don't care about the phone being jailbroken, just need the unlock to stay.

Has anyone else had a problem with apps disappearing? I can't re download them since it says its already on the phone, and I can't see them anywhere. This started happening with 3.0

Same, mine's now saying Prepared for Shipment. For reference I ordered later at night after the WWDC (tried earlier but didn't want the risk of the Apple store website exploding on me while ordering right after the conference).

Mine says prepared for shipment, too. Awesome.

Since it says "delivery by June 19th" does anyone think there's a realistic chance of iPhones arriving on the 18th? Or do we think Apple runs a tight ship where delivery is scheduled specifically for the 19th and not before no matter what?

I ordered mine around the same time. Around 6:00PM eastern after the keynote when I got home from work.

My roommate ordered one just a few days ago (Thursday I think) and he says he got a shipping notice in his email that says it will arrive "on the 19th at the earliest" so I think his might be running late since he ordered so late.

People have gotten Apple products a day or so earlier in the past. It's mostly in the hands of the courier. This is a bit more of a hard release date though, in the past people have gotten things at the end of January when Apple says they'll be available at the "start of February". Who knows. I'm crossing my fingers, personally.

Anyone knows if any At&t stores will be opening early on June 19th?

edit: http://wirelessphonethoughts.com/tag/att-opens-early-june-19th/

SOUR!!!!

A video made by an AT&T employee details how the carrier plans on handling the long lines that are sure to show up on the morning of June 19th at AT&T stores to buy the iPhone 3G S. There will be two lines in front of the store. One will be for those who have pre-ordered the device and that line will be able to enter the store at 7 am to pick up their order. The second line will be made up of those who want to buy the handset on the first day, but did not pre-order. That line will not be allowed into the store until the normal opening time. Once in the store, members of that line will have to stand behind those remaining from the pre-ordered line. Got it? Best bet apparently is to pre-order the new iPhone. If you don't like crowds, you can still pre-order the device online and have it shipped directly to you for arrival on the 19th. Of course, the 8GB and 16GB versions of the iPhone 3G are available right now at $99 and $149 respectively.

I'm going to pre-order with Best Buy and then buy a Apple Care plan with apple.

I'm in deep trouble GAF.

I plugged my iPhone 2G into my mac at work today, and nothing happened. So I ripped out the 3rd party cable and found a legit one, and still nothing. I blew out the dock on the phone with compressed air, and still nothing.

It will charge fine over Firewire, but nothing on USB.

Let's assume that there is a bad pin on the ADC, is there anyway to sync wirelessly ?
