Does the Kimble app work even if you don't have the Kimble itself? It seems like such a small screen would make reading a book tough but it's a nice idea..

You don't need to own a Kindle to use the Kindle app. Download the app and look for free books on Amazon, there are many, and try it out for yourself.

It's Kindle with an N by the way.

so the voice recognition doesn't let you play a particular album? only 'songs by this artist'?

You can play album, artist and playlist, but not song.

Okay slightly pissed off..

Am I allowed to download TV shows etc wherever I go off the AT&T network? Or am I forced to be connected to Wi-Fi?

I can't even download a few games on the AT&T network because they are 10mb's or more?

My icons got all screwed up so I deleted them.. and I'm at the office trying to redownload them and it won't let me b/c I'm on 3G and they are over 10 MB...

RETARDED.

EDIT: WTF... I downloaded Flight Control again.. and the icon is still screwed up..

Half of the icon is the Tap Tap Revenge Colors...

Anyone experiencing this?

All these work:

Play album X
Play songs by artist X
Play playlist X
Play more songs like this
Genius(creates a genius playlist based on what's playing)
What song is this?
shuffle
next song
Call X(you will then be asked which number if there is more than one)

There's more I'm missing I'm sure.

Anything over 10 MB has to be done over Wi-Fi.

I had the same problem, but deleting the app and re-downloading it from the App Store in the iphone got it fixed.

Not for me..

Apparently its a bug in 3.0 for many phones.

I have 3 icons that are jacked with this too =[

Man 10MB requires WiFi? That is such a small cap. You can't even download half of the decent games on the iPhone unless you are next to wifi =[

Welcome to all the bitching for the past year. There were rumors the cap was getting lifted, but no dice.

Anyone else feel like the speakerphone quality and associated notification sounds that come out of the speaker sound worse than the 3G or OG? They sound like a lower bit rate, or "hot" like they're too loud for the speaker.

I mentioned this before, and I agree.

I think the quality is the same, but the speaker itself is louder. Push something through it that's too loud and the sound starts clipping pretty badly, which led me to fear for my little speakers life!

How about the lack of MMS and tethering support?!

Small consolation, but as an iPhone customer you get free access to any AT&T wifi network, which includes all Starbucks.

RubxQub said:

Both are at least on the way, the 10 MB cap might never be lifted.

Tobor said:

On the way, but the fact that they don't support it out the gate like EVERY OTHER CARRIER did is just super annoying...and all signs point to AT&T reaming us up the ass if we want to enable tethering on our phones (more so than other phones).

Not only that but I bet the 10MB cap rule was requested by AT&T but is enforced worldwide. That combined with the gutting of slingplayer means that even those out of reach of AT&Ts grasp feel the effects.

That doesnt bother me..

I rarely tether.. I have a subnotebook and honestly I probably should but then again I know the plans are ridiculous and i would be afraid id download so much info just surfing the web that id get cuaght if I went to non traditional methods

MMS I so rarely use.. I e-mail alot or facebook

Yea the wifi for Starbucks is nice.. (Though I go to starbucks once every 6 months :lol )

I recently was in Vegas for a week and the resort I stayed at used Wayport(which is AT&T) for the Wifi, so I had free access the whole time. Nice bonus.

As for Starbucks, it's nice to know it's there if you're out and want to download a podcast or game that just released, and you don't want to wait until you go home.

My speaker is all sorts of messed up. There are reports all over the internet about this stuff but I'm seeing two problems.

1) The high-frequency noise. If my phone isn't on silent, after I hear the sound for sending or receiving an SMS or locking/unlocking the screen I hear a high-frequency sound come out of the phone's speaker for about 3-4 seconds. Not all people can hear these kinds of tones. I can, and they're coming from my iPhone 3GS. There is also a high frequency tone that plays out of the speaker constantly while recording video.

2) Inconsistent alert volume. If I don't use the phone for a bit and then have it make a noise (typically when I plug it in to charge) the "charging" confirmation sound comes out too loud and crackles. If I unplug the phone and plug it back in again, it makes the sound properly. Others have noticed it with the "tri-tone" SMS sound as well (I haven't, but I use the "Electronic" SSM alert).

Anybody else having these problems? I really hope there is a software fix for them, as I really don't want to drive two hours to Jacksonville, FL to the nearest Apple store to get a replacement.

Well tonight I'm gonna drive by the Apple Store.

Do I need to set a reservation up or do they take walk-ins?

I'm having some bad screen issues where my screen just stops responding at random times for 20-30 seconds. Sometimes it fixes itself but sometimes I have to put my phone in sleep and wake it back up to fix. I've had it actually stop responding a few times when I slide the bar to unlock.

Hopefully they can replace it with a new one tonight but I wasn't sure if I had to set up an appointment. The next available appts are either during the day when I work or like weeks from now.

I just finished reading what would have been approx. 1000 pages in paperback on the iPhone using Kindle app. I really can't say that the small screen or the fact that it's backlit caused me any particular fatigue or made it more difficult to read in any way. It feels a little odd, because you don't get quite the same visceral sense of page-by-page progress and it ends up being a lot more page turns than you'd deal with in a book, but thumbing along becomes unconscious effort. I'm convinced at this point.

The Power support antiglare worked well for me, even when my screen cracked.

Also someone was asking about holsters? Fsm has a 'review' and discount link:
iPhone Exec Hip Holster Case for iPhone 3G and 3Gs is made from brushed leather and has an envelope flap with a strong hidden magnet fastening for easy access, while ensuring your iPhone remains secure. It comes with a robust silver snap on clip for belts. It comes in black AND silver.

What would be a reasonable price to pay for a factory unlocked iphone (i.e. the ones from France and Italy)? In eBay I see it within the $1,200-1400 range, although I'm not sure if this is due to the novelty or because of the actual, real price.

Well, I bought my 3G in New Zealand - it was something like NZ$1100 or somewhere there abouts. That translates to around USD$699. Don't get ripped off.

No, no, no ... I'm not AT ALL upset with my wife, and yes, they certainly are nice handsets. I'm just frustrated with the situation. I mean, we have three young children, and having a 32GB with a better camera and video capabilities for the same price (or even the 16GB for $100 less) would've been incredibly handy for us. It's just a combination of factors ... but I fully acknowledge that I have a WONDERFUL wife.

situation != wife ;-)

I don't think you can really be that frustrated with the situation. I know I would feel bad, but really, it's like complaining about anything new that comes out. Two months is a pretty long lead time - it's not she purchased them a couple weeks (which I think is probably the ultimate limit for feeling upset).

The Crystal screen protectors are good, and you get 2 for $15. There are two options too:

1) Anti-glare, which is matted, slightly mutes the colors, and also reduces fingerprints;

http://store.apple.com/us/product/TS504LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0NA&mco=MzQxNjUxMQ

2) Clear, which is shiny, does not affect the colors (you can't even tell it's on), but shows fingerprints.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/TS505LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0NA&mco=MzE3NzYwMA

I won't be putting any protectors on my screen. I have a feeling a protector covered in fingerprints is less ideal than letting the oleophobic screen coating do it's job.

Has anybody picked up an iSkin Solo? How do you like it? Can you post pictures?

I feel better buying app's over iTunes myself, but 10MB while it started out ok is now a huge bottleneck for good app's, that cap is all down to the phone network provider or not?

The chrome backing on my touch 2g is coated in very fine hairline like scrapes from sitting on the desk or whatever but my screen is mint, apple did a VERY good job with the screen protection. I would buy a wallet or case for your phone/touch but ignore screen protectors, you really don't need one as long as you don't stick your device in the same pocket as a pile of keys or loose change...

If you're tied down to a two year contract the two months wait is nothing really. It's quite reasonable to feel frustrated.

In other news, 1Password released a 'pro' version for 3.0 which is really just the same as the old version but now includes 'support' for Copy&Paste. Fuckers.

Has anybody picked up an iSkin Solo? How do you like it? Can you post pictures?

I picked one up, in black. I can probably post pictures tonight but if you want to see how it behaves there are some reviews on Youtube of people bending them and putting them on.

I like it, it's not super bendy or loose, it's pretty tight and sturdy. It made the back feel good by adding a bit of grip and it covered the silver rim completely. I really have no issue with it other than the lint it collects from your pocket, it sticks onto the case itself and also the in various places on the front where the case meets the black of the front of the phone. It wasn't a ton, but it was more than my brother's Belkin silicone case collected (which is probably because that one is much more loose so the lint moves). I also got black, so that definitely doesn't help since it shows everything.

Anyway, I liked the iSkin solo. It's a nice case in black, covered everything well (no fingernail needed for the ringer switch) and felt good. I only switched to the Speck Candyshell on impulse in the Apple store because I prefer the yellow and black color scheme of the Candyshell and love how its hard plastic on the back but softer rubber in the front.

The Speck Candyshell is better than the iSkin Solo in my opinion, it doesn't cover all of the silver but it looks cooler and doesn't collect anywhere near as much dust-lint nonsense. All the ports are just as easy to reach as on the Solo...I only prefer it because I like the hard plastic back. If you don't want that, the iSkin Solo doesn't have any issues, it wasn't loose at all, not even the bottom front where many sag right out of the gate. It's a better case than the silicone offerings by Belkin for sure.

The Solo is very plain though. There's nothing to it except two little raised bumpers on the back bottom that you will probably never feel but can see. Made no difference.

Byline apparently has great offline support - nice if you are getting on a train or plane and want to read the full story (and syncs with Google reader too). I haven't used it so I can't say. Newsstand has an innovative UI, a horizontal rack and magazine view, that I love.

You can use/create your own ringtones for the iPhone. There's a number of different ways to do it, depending on whether you use Mac or PC.

I have a solo on right now.. a blue one. I love it. People have already complimented my case this weekend.

Very sturdy.. no loose ends.. tight around the whole thing. It can sometimes catch lint under the corners but its easy to clean and doesnt bother me. Feels great in the hand and is good. I recommend it.

This is exactly what I want from a case. Protection with NO style (either negative or positive). I've been wishing for some sort of magic coating that will both protect the phone and not add anything to it. I really don't want to hide the iPhone in a case. My only problem with the iSkin Solo was that there is no option for a totally translucent case. It's either opaque black/white or a translucent red/blue.

But I found it in clear.

iSkin used to make a clear iSkin Solo, and they sold it in a package along with a belt clip. They don't make it anymore. However you can still find new ones on eBay. There's a store that sells them for about $30 with free shipping, which is a lot less than iSkin sells directly for. They want $30 for the case, don't include a holster (though I won't be using it anyway) and charge for shipping. For anybody out there looking for this case, just do an eBay search for "iskin solo clear" and a few results will pop up.

I was torn between the iSkin Solo and the Power Support Air Jacket. Both are very thin. I wanted the solo because it is rubberized and will offer good protection in a small package, but couldn't find it in a clear option. This is why I was debating getting the Power Support Air Jacket, but that thing is so thin I was afraid it wouldn't offer enough protection. eBay saved the day thankfully.

Well, I just pulled the trigger on a 32gb black 3GS...wasn't going to since I thought Rogers policy was that I'd pay 549 for the phone, but I just got quoted the 299 price and no 35 activation fee or anything. That plus all the good hype here made me spring for it. 1 year contract extension, of course, but that was to be expected.

3-5 business days of agonizing wait now.

You can create your own ring tones pretty easily. The process is basically:

1) Open a song up in an audio editor.

2) Trim it down to under 40 seconds.

3) Save the clip as an AAC-encoded file (.m4a)

4) Rename the file extension to .m4r

5) Drop the song.m4r into iTunes and it'll show up in the Ringtones list.

If you have trouble importing the ringtone into iTunes, try chopping a few more seconds off of the audio. Above 40 seconds, iTunes will just refuse to import it, but I've noticed that between 35-40 seconds there is still a chance that iTunes will refuse the import. I have no idea why.

Awesome! I was under the impression you could only make them/use your own with jailbroken phones. I'll just convert my existing mp3s to AAC then and be good to go.

That was the one thing I thought I'd miss right off the bat when going to the new phone from my existing Q. You become so accustomed to knowing who's calling right away by the ringtone.

Even though you cut it to about 40 seconds or less, you really only get about 18 seconds of playtime since that's how long it is before voice mail picks up. I haven't figured out a way to extend the number of rings for voice mail either.

Even easier just use a website that will create the ringtone for you:

I've been making ringtones since it was possible. In fact, when I get a call from you I hear the line from Arctic Monkey's "A Certain Romance" about how "there's only new music so that there's new ring tones".

For Mac users, in GarageBand there's an option to "export as ringtone" but I would highly discourage it's use. It's a pre-set export command and the bitrate setting is horrendously low, makes everything sound like shit. You get much better results exporting as a high quality AAC and changing the file extension manually.

BAM!

1. On your phone, dial *#61# and click Call.
2. Some information should be displayed: number that the calls are being forwarded to and the delay before the forwarding engages.
3. Write down the number (including +1)
4. Dial **61*+1xxxxxxxxxx*11*30# and hit Call. +1xxxxxxxxxx is the number you wrote down previously, 30 is the delay in seconds. The delay can be set in 5 second increments, 30 is maximum
5. Dial *#61# to verify that the new settings are active.

To get the plus sign hold the zero down for a few seconds and it will appear. Do not put a value of over 30 in or you will be charged for airtime... I use 25 myself.

I haven't done this since iPhone OG running 1.0, but I imagine it should still work considering these settings are all on AT&T's end, and not part of the iPhone OS.

you can do the ringtone thing in itunes itself, just have it convert to AAC. also i think theres a limit of 30 seconds, so u cant just stick in a whole song.

cmon dev team, finish the 3G unlock!

Okay.

I just want to proclaim that Apple has the WORST tech support ever.

My Apple store is only showing 1 day (Thursday) as a day I can come in and go to the Genius Bar.. and it only gives me 1 hour within that day to book it. 10am.. Sorry but I work.. and I get no other options?

So instead I call the AppleCare line who says they have no idea what my problem is and says I can take a number or do a reservation in store..

I then call the store and say "Can I do a walk-in and take a number on my phone since its screen freezes every 15 mins" and shes like "Well.. you can still technically call 911.. so no you need to reserve online. You can try the store 45 mins away.. I hear they are good about taking walk-ins!"

WHAT THE EFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Having an Apple Store near you ends up not being convenient at all.

The best part is the website says "Want to try another Apple store nearby for possible availability?"

So I click that.. and it lists the other store with 1 day as my option (Thursday) and the SAME time slot as the other store. WHAT IS THE POINT?!

Sorry had to vent.

The information you get returned must be carrier specific. When I dial *#61# I only get the number, not the delay before the forwarding starts. Wonder if this means it isn't changeable on my end.
