BAM!

1. On your phone, dial *#61# and click Call.
2. Some information should be displayed: number that the calls are being forwarded to and the delay before the forwarding engages.
3. Write down the number (including +1)
4. Dial **61*+1xxxxxxxxxx*11*30# and hit Call. +1xxxxxxxxxx is the number you wrote down previously, 30 is the delay in seconds. The delay can be set in 5 second increments, 30 is maximum
5. Dial *#61# to verify that the new settings are active.

To get the plus sign hold the zero down for a few seconds and it will appear. Do not put a value of over 30 in or you will be charged for airtime... I use 25 myself.

I haven't done this since iPhone OG running 1.0, but I imagine it should still work considering these settings are all on AT&T's end, and not part of the iPhone OS.

Could Apple not have just put a fucking setting on the iPhone itself that says "number of seconds before forwarding to voicemail"?

Anyone who had a 3g that got a 3gs. Are the volume buttons on the side the same? Im trying to find someone to compare with. My 3g volume buttons click and stick out. My 3gs one do not. I can barely tell if I am pressing them

Are there any free apps for creating outlines w/ basic indented bullet points?
There's a number of different list/task list apps for the iPhone, some are free.

If you want something that's just a pure text editor with the ability to create bullet lists, I can't think of anything off the top of my head that's available.

You could try something like Evernote, which lets you create notes on the PC client with bullet lists (and other rich text formatting), and will then display them in the iPhone app, but you can't create them in the iPhone app - the native iphone app just allows plain text editing.

Has anyone here sold an unlocked 2G iphone? I got offered $150 for mine and am wondering if that is a justified price.

Search ebay completed auction for comparable models? I mean, we don't know enough about yours (condition, size, etc) to really say.

What is the best iPhone RSS reader? I've been using NetNewsWire since that is what I use on my Mac but I'm not too thrilled with it. Something that syncs with Google Reader would be nice.

I'm interested in Byline and Newsstand, so any impressions would be great.
Byline is a fantastic app, and is easily my most frequently-used iPhone app. The Google Reader web app is nice, but I find reading to be far more convenient and quick with Byline.

If I have 50-100 new items to sync, it only takes a matter of seconds on 3G before they're ready to read, and thanks to the app's caching, flipping through articles is instantaneous.

The fully-offline reading is great too for when I go on a plane. Takes much longer than normal caching, of course, but the following works great:

-Walking to the gate
-Set Byline to make all articles available for offline reading via 3G download
-Start a sync, lock the phone
-5-10 minutes later when I'm actually at the game, it's mostly done downloading and ready to read full offline articles on the plane.

My main usage scenario though is for Byline to make articles starred available for offline reading.

Does it support landscape mode?

Okay.

I just want to proclaim that Apple has the WORST tech support ever.

My Apple store is only showing 1 day (Thursday) as a day I can come in and go to the Genius Bar.. and it only gives me 1 hour within that day to book it. 10am.. Sorry but I work.. and I get no other options?

So instead I call the AppleCare line who says they have no idea what my problem is and says I can take a number or do a reservation in store..

I then call the store and say "Can I do a walk-in and take a number on my phone since its screen freezes every 15 mins" and shes like "Well.. you can still technically call 911.. so no you need to reserve online. You can try the store 45 mins away.. I hear they are good about taking walk-ins!"

WHAT THE EFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Having an Apple Store near you ends up not being convenient at all.

Thing is, if someone else has made an appointment, it seems a little unfair that you could walk in and see a "genius" in their time slot. If it's in a busy location, it's going to fill up quick.

Is anyone having any problems with the iTunes store on the iPhone? I'm trying to search for podcasts and every page is coming up blank. It works ok in iTunes tho.

I rather not take someones spot but they should have a walk up option where 1 genius is sorely dedicated to that at least while the rest are on reservations.

iPhone 3GS users, can you hear this sound?

Are dogs unusually attentive to, or angry at, your new iPhone 3G S? The folks over at Boy Genius Report have an inkling as to what might be causing it: when a iPhone 3G S user sends a text message or locks the screen, the phone's speaker (the grille on the bottom left-hand side of the device) emits a high pitched sound for approximately three seconds. Many users corroborate the presence of the sound in the comments of the article.

This is an unusual response to these interactions, and further investigation has not yielded any other function that triggers the sound. To activate the sound with a lock, the phone must first be fully unlocked (waking the phone and putting it back to sleep will not trigger the sound). The phone does not emit the tone when the sound is switched off; likewise, when the volume is low, the sound is barely audible, if at all. To my 22-year old ears the sound is soft even with the volume all the way up, but noticeable once I became aware of it (and now a bit annoying).

Boy Genius Report estimates the sound to be in the 15 kHz range (here's a clip of a similar sound for reference), well within the iPhone's listed range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Your personal experience with the sound may vary, as higher pitched sounds become harder to hear as you age. Some users report hearing it loud and clear, while others must hold the speaker right up to their ear to hear it; some don't hear it at all. For this reason, it's hard to say whether the sound is endemic to the phone or an anomaly only occurring in certain devices.

A call to Apple's tech support revealed they had no previous knowledge of this issue. They directed me to do a hard reset (holding down the Home button + the Sleep button for ten seconds) but the sound remained. The representative speculated it was a hardware issue, and recommended I take the phone to my nearest Apple Store to get a replacement. Until then, if a rabid dog attacks me, all I have to do to confuse it is unlock and relock my iPhone (or, send a text message).

Can any of you hear this sound too?

Update: The plot thickens: the phone also emits the noise just after recording video, and for a much longer period of time. An apple discussion thread about the noise is here.

Just got my 3GS. Waiting on activation, was hoping the network would be clear by now but it looks like it's going to take a while.

The one thing that I noticed instantly is the screen looks smaller because the black bars on the sides of the phone are noticeably larger. Hope the (viewable) screen is really the same size.

I've started giving my playlists really basic and pedestrian names so that I feel less self-conscious when I summon them via Voice Control.

Goodbye "Awesome Gaz-o-Matic Chillaxo Mix", we hardly knew ye...

I refuse to attempt to hear it. Haven't heard it yet and I refuse to try to, otherwise I won't be able to unhear it!

:lol I've never had anything other than "March 2008" "Party 2" etc. type names... guess you need the creativity of a Garry Whitta to come up with a name like that.

On my front... the order is still 'processing' -- I guess it probably won't ship out today now given that fact. :(

Smaller compared to what? I thought the physical appearance is pretty much 100% identical to 3G bar the silver text on the back.

Same here, it's driving me nuts!

the screen is the same size.

it's the chrome bezel that got smaller. the curve on the edges was way more severe on the 2G and the chrome went all the way up to the screen. the 3g has a bezel with a much smaller curve.

Thanks for clearing that up. I can see the bezel differences side by side now. :)

Good story of some guys tracking down a lost iPhone using "Find My Phone"

http://gizmodo.com/5300060/find-my-iphone-saved-my-phone-from-a-thief
How easily that story could have ended with:

"...and he pulled a gun on us. First he just took our wallets, but then he put a ball-gag in my black friends mouth and pushed him down into the basement of his pawn shop. He immediately did the same to me.

It was then that we were introduced to The Gimp..."

So I have a problem:

I copied my mp3's from home into Itunes and converted everything. Then I synced my iPhone to my iTunes at home and now my phone has all my music.

When I go to work, I logged on to iTunes and thought I could just play my music from my phone through iTunes.... Didnt work. THen I thought I could just copy my music from my phone to my iTunes at work.... Didnt work.

Am I doing something wrong or is this just how the system is built? If so, it is kind of ridiculous... right now I have speakers hooked up through my iPhone as a workaround. Not ideal.

Really? Cool. I always thought the 3G was wider, but seeing a spec sheet, it seems it's like 1mm wider!

Is there a good photo for comparison?

Thanks for clarifying!

Intentional. They don't want you to easily hook up your ipod/phone and just d/l all the music onto that machine.

It's annoying and makes sense, but there are ways around it if you look.

Quick question-

How does the AppStore deal with purchasing apps? Is it possible to use a credit card, or does it go on your phone bill? I'd rather use a different credit card to buy stuff and not have it go on my monthly bill...

It uses your iTunes account, so yes, you use a credit card.

This throws lots of people for a loop when they aren't familiar with how the iPhone and iTunes work. It did to me as well.

You can only have your iPhone working with one iTunes database. It really chews the ball, but you get used to it... Eventually.

Thankfully you can do pretty much anything on your phone that you can do in iTunes. Besides ripping a CD of course.

Do you really think the music companies are into letting you copy your shit around like that?

Apple is really late on the train for networked music, though. They have MobileMe. They should have streaming music from a central database or linking your MobileMe account to a few iTunes instances.

No, but I think most phones and MP3 players do let you gain access to your music like that so coming from outside an Apple background it would certainly be understandable how someone is surprised by this.

It's the cost of doing business with the RIAA. No way around it.

I've never been personally bothered since I don't like to copy personal files to my work computer anyway. I'd rather just listen to the iPhone directly.

Actually, I just want to listen to my my music and control the playlist on my computer while listening to it. I don't care for copying the music over. Additionally, I hear that you CAN do this with an Ipod... just not an iPhone for some reason.

I wonder if you could go line out from the dock direct to your PC soundcard...maybe that would do it?

Anyway I suppose the thing that bugged me is that you can share itunes libraries, but only over the same local network...
