It's the cost of doing business with the RIAA. No way around it.

I've never been personally bothered since I don't like to copy personal files to my work computer anyway. I'd rather just listen to the iPhone directly.

Well I think the issue is not copying but simply hooking the iPhone up to iTunes and just playng it through your computer but still stored on the phone. No copying there but access to your music.

I recently bought beejive. Loving it.

I've had some issues with Beejive, but I guess my expectations were too high given how expensive the app is. It still is probably better than the rest, but still was slightly disappointed given how people praised it as perfect. Hopefully some of the issues I have will be addressed in the update.

I have speakers on my desk specifically for the phone, and my earbuds. There's no scenario where I would need to do this.

I would imagine in a normal setup, people have speakers hooked up to their computer so having a seperate line for the phone too could be a bit annoying or to unplug their speakers from the computer to the phone also be annoying. It's nice that you have your desk designed around the iPhone but most people don't.

What are your issues?

For the record, I was pretty happy with palringo (hated fring), until contacts started not working for msn. I don't even use im all that much on my iPhone, I just want to beusing the best I can.

Also, I bought it at $9.99. I wouldn't say it's perfect - that's very subjective. But I felt it ws justified. $15 would be harder to justify, however.

Lastly, I've found that my expenditure for iphone apps to be increasing in terms if what I'm willing to pay for one app. As the AppStore is maturing, so too is the quality of apps.

It's not "designed around the iPhone", don't be so melodramatic. I bought a cheap set of speakers for $15, but I usually use my nice Apple in ear buds so I don't have to hear my coworkers jabbering away.

AIM and Beejive supposedly are up now. My phone isn't telling me there's an update yet though.

Beejive is definitely out. The update isn't showing up yet but you can get around that by redownloading the app.

Most of my issues tend to be more on just setting it up so far since I don't think I'll be actively using it till push is working. I just wanted to make sure to get in on the $10 price. Hopefully the update registers for me soon since other people are getting it. Anyway here's my issues with it.

First, I wish the settings were in the app not in the iPhone settings. Kind of irritating to jump between the two to change things. That said there was a setting that didn't work in the main Settings and could only be changed in the More window within the app. That was the background chat image. No matter what you set it to in the Settings, it didn't do anything only to discover that one setting is available somewhere else.

My biggest gripe though is the lack of being able to configure your groups to any extent. It pulled in all my groups from AIM with no way to minimize any of them or even hide them all togethre. Plus it did it in an alphabetical order so it was displaying stuff up top that I didn't want to see. A way of hiding groups and reordering groups would go a long way. Also for some reason it lists my Google contacts under Unfiled for some reason and not Google. Facebook shows under Facebook but Google is Unfiled.

Also what's the blue arrow icon next to each contact listing? I try to tap it and it does nothing. If I switch from iPhone listing to Desktop, it goes away like it's not really a feature and just a visual look which would be stupid cuz those icons typically imply some sort of functional usage. If there is a usage, why does it go away in Desktop mode?

Those were my issues off the top of my head. I think given that it's normally $16 and even at $10, both prices are a lot higher than most apps especially for an IM app which are generally free on the PC, I just had higher expectations of polish and functionality. I'm sure it's better than any other iPhone app, but I guess the price raised my expectations unreasonably.

It seemed melodramatic to me that your setup is what people should be doing instead of expecting the ability to play their music connected to their computer. It seems unreasonable to me to have a dedicated setup for the iPhone when there are other situations to have audio from other sources like your computer. What if you wanted to watch a YouTube video suddenly? You swap your cables around? The iPhone setup is less than ideal and perfectly reasonable for someone to want to do what was mentioned before especially since they can do it from their computer at home since it's the one tied to the iPhone. Sure we can accept that's what we have to work with but we shouldn't excuse it.

I just deleted it but when I went to download it again it says Buy Now on the icon. Is that normal? I don't want to suddenly pay twice for it.

Hmmm. I just checked, my main settings set wallpaper works fine.

I guess this could be an issue. I don't use groups, so it's not a big deal to me.

I see your point. But to be honest, I never clicked on them, I just clicked on the whole box, and the transition was slide, so I guess the arrow was just visual.

Possibly. I just like it better than other apps - I'm guessing a lot of the cost is actually going to the service of keeping you logged in. It's way more seamless than Palringo and fring, which require you to get an account. Fring had the same 'couldn't manage contacts', and since I was only using it for Skype, I just turned off my msn contacts (some people were showing up twice, for instance). I can definitely see why some of the stuff you mentioned could be annoying.

I started out by saying I'd never personally been bothered, I never meant to imply that anyone else was wrong if they are. As of now, though, it's not a scenario that's going to change, so finding an alternate solution is practical.

To clarify my own situation, I don't move any cables around, It's a separate pair of cheap speakers. Again, I don't use them that often, I usually use my earbuds. Moving cables around constantly would indeed be stupid.

It shouldn't charge you - it should say "You have already downloaded this, click to download again, you will not be charged" or something. I'm just gonna wait it out.

Push requires an internet connection, right?

Also, I thought you could listen to music on another iphone? I could be wrong, but I swear you could plug an iPod into any mac, tell it NOT to sync, but it shows up as a device in iTunes, and you can browse the media on it.

Hooking your iPhone to your computer to play your music through your computer is about the least intuitive solution of all of them.

Not sure if this has been asked but is there any texting apps that allow you to somewhat text for free or at least use the data portion of your plan on the iphone?
I've tried text plus lite but it's a bit slow and doesn't push texts when it's on an ipod touch(2.21). I haven't looked into beejive but it appears to be an IM app only?

I thought this worked as well, but like I said, I've never tried. One of my coworkers does that with his Nano, I think.

The ones I hear are most popular and useful are textfree and textplus. If you go into the itunes store and look at top free and top paid apps there will be a handful in the top 25 or top 50 that are the most popular as well. Never used one so I don't know, but try that.

Looks like 3.0 does address some of my issues so far. They removed the setting from the Settings and left it in the More area for just Set Wallpaper. They also let you minimize group lists which is great. Like I want my Offline there but I don't want it taking up space.

Here's another issue that I'm noticing. The settings has sound settings but I have no idea what they sound like without setting them, going into the app, and then having someone test them. Once I hear it and decide I don't like it, I gotta exit, change, start, test, and see if I like that one. I guess once the settings are set, I shouldn't mess with them again, but just the initial getting it to where I like has not been fun.

Edit: Holy crap is push instant =)

Weird that your wallpaper setting didn't work! Mine was fine. Whoop! Sync just done.

Well, crap.

The reason I ditched Palringo and bought BeeJive was because my contacts list disappeared. I'm sure tehy would've fixed it eventually, but I couldn't wait, so I bought BeeJive. Now BeeJive 3.0 has the same issue - no buddy list :(

I see. cool thanks. was looking at a few of them but not sure which ones actually work since the rating system seems a bit whack right now, not sure which to trust and sadly some of them don't offer the 'lite' version to try. thanks again.

another question to anybody who has used these apps; all parties that I'd like to text for free would require the program installed on their device as well?

Ya, BeeJive just broke my connection to google. Wonder if Facebook will work.

Edit: Facebook is broken too

AIM update is out as noted, saw it before I read about it. Cool!

Just tested the Push features.

Oh, it's fine again. I turned off meta contacts, and then it appeared. Turn it back on, and it's still ok. What is meta contacts anyway?

Hey, all you people with 3GS iPhones need to do a benchmark test with the "aqua forest" app. Do a stress test to see how much stuff can be put on screen before it chugs.

It usually only takes a couple strings and some water to make it chug on an older iPhone.

So, does anyone know if I can get my Google Maps locations stuff synced with iPhone Google Maps?

I just had someone send me an IM and it pushed right through to my iPhone home screen. Fuckin sweet!

EDIT: Weird, I've got my iPhone IM app and Pidgin open on my desktop right now and IMs are going straight to the iPhone but not to my desktop. Shouldn't it go to both? Must remember to turn Push off when I'm at my desk :D

Since no one here bothered to respond, I did some more mucking around and found a quirk with 3.0 and Messaging.

It seemed Group SMSing had been removed with 3.0 and adding Multiple recipients automatically turned your SMS into a Group MMS.

I later found that adding the names using the 'Plus' icon instead of typing the names manually keeps it as an SMS.

So if you want to send a Group SMS, then make sure you use the '+' icon instead of manually typing the names.

It sucks and hopefully they fix this up in 3.1

Push actually stopped working for me in BeeJive. I had to go into the app, log off all my accounts and log back in for Push to work again. This worries me if they're getting overloaded cuz IMs are going to be pretty heavy in general.

I was experiencing problems with Beejive as well. To remedy it, I deleted the app from the phone and resync'd with iTunes. Flawless since the fresh install of Beejive 3.0!

After reinstalling the app from Itunes I fixed the push problem and haven't had a single crash since.

The push notifications are really nice, makes the app so much more functional then the old E-mail alerts, if only facebook would implement push as well then my mobile social networking would be complete :(.

I never use im clients.. but my best friend and I used Blackberry Messenger all the time.. so I decided to download BeeJive and he would use Google Talk.

Hopefully this works well. Glad push notification is out for BeeJive.

I also downloaded memoryinfo to free memory every once in a while though its a 3GS and ill doubt ill lag on any of it.

The 3GS consistently has 90mb's free all the time.

haha wasn't him, but it was another gaf user. Gonna be bombarded with shit smilies now :(

Push seems to work great so far in Beejive. Tested it while the phone was in standby (screen locked) mode, tested it within another app, etc. All worked flawlessly.
