I just recently found my power adaptor that came with my iPhone and I remember there was a recall on them. Anyone know if it's too late to get them exchanged?

Probably not too late, those recalls last forever. Check the back, if there is a green dot on the back of the adapter, then you don't need to get it replaced.

Applecare on my iPhone EDGE is gonna run out soon, so I have been looking into a 3G or 3GS. One thing I can't find anywhere is the rate plans. Little help?

USA, Florida, ATT.
Was applecare worth it?

If I were to go on prepay AT&T, they charge like 1c per KB, so it's like $10 per MB. Stupid. Casual data rate in NZ is much better. NZ$1 per day (USD about 65c) for 10MB. Only on days you use it, and only a fraction of the cost if you only use part. They even added an 'addon' package to a prepay - let it remove $20 (USD$13) per month, and you get 100MB per month access. Not to shabby for casual access.

yeah, that's a decent deal if you can restrict your data usage

In my experience, yes. I had my 2G replaced 3 times, and the AC took care of it. It's pretty hassle free.

How many of those times were within the first year? Because those were covered already under the phone's 1 year warranty.

I turned off push, brightness 75%, and 3G always on (I check email at red lights...lol.) Could probably last 2 days with a bunch of calls, hourly email check, some music while driving, and maybe even some games at night, with a lot of idle time, of course.

but since it can charge and sync while my macbook is closed and on stand-by, I just plug it in there every night.

Only one. The last time I replaced the phone was 2 months ago. I bought the phone in Dec '07.

Evidently UPS or someone within it lost/stole my iPhone and Apple is having to send a new one. Anyone else have this problem?

This happened to a friend of mine in Texas. He was supposed to have received it on launch day. He ended up getting his new phone a few days later.

My friend has Applecare and when his 3G started acting weird due to the touch screen failing he called Apple and they shipped him a new one overnight the same day along with a box to ship the broken one back. His good experience convinced me to get it.

even better if you are near an Apple Store....same day replacement :)

I'm in Florida and I also went from 2G to 3GS. It should be basically the same +$10 more for 3G data (it's $30 rather than EDGE's $20) and you'll also need to pay $5 / $15 / $20 for texting since you don't get 200 for free anymore.

Regarding everybody's battery life, what the hell are you guys doing all day? I have never had a single battery problem with my 2G and have yet to have any battery problems with the 3GS. Here is what I do to conserve battery life.

WiFi: I have wifi turned on all the time, but I have "ask to join networks" turned off. This is important. If you have it set to on, it pops up a message whenever you are within range of a wifi signal. So it causes the iPhone to constantly check for nearby wifi signals. With it off, you need to go into the settings to join a network BUT you can tell it remember networks so it will auto-join just those. The first time you go somewhere, you have to join the network manually (through settings) but after that it's automatic. With this setup, the iPhone doesn't constantly look for signals. It only looks for signals if it needs a network connection, and if it doesn't find one that it already knows, it stops looking.
Are you sure this is how it works? I figured that it is always searching. Afterall, as soon as I turn the phone from wake, it tries to connect (after 3.0, it takes a while longer too). To automatically connect, it must be searching.

Unless push forces it to constantly search.

I have don't ask to join, but I figured that was only to stop asking, not to stop searching.

Brightness: I have auto-brightness turned on, and I have the slider set to around 40%.
I have mine on 50%

Mail/Contacts/Calendars: I have a MobileMe account, an Exchange account, and a CalDAV subscription to my Facebook events. I have MobileMe and Exchange set to Push (mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks for MobileMe and Mail and Calendars for Exchange). I have the Facebook CalDAV subscription set to Fetch manually (so only when I open it).

I have mine with push off, and the fetch set to manual. Under individual accounts, it defaults to fetch, but I assume that means it will use the global setting of fetch (which is manual). I never get random emails come on without opening the app, so I assume I'm doing it right.

Bluetooth: Set to OFF. I don't use bluetooth. I don't have a headset and even if I did, bluetooth is a pretty big battery drain.

Location Services: set to ON, but I notice that when I use the GPS a lot it just rips right through the battery.

I have my auto-lock set to 2 minutes.
I don't use bluetooth either so have this off.
I have location services on, but it doesn't use teh gps unless an app calls it.
I have my autolock on 1 minutes.

Here's my typical usage day. I wake up at 7:00AM. I check the weather on my iPhone before heading into work. I usually get to work early and catch up on Tweets via Tweetie. I am at work until 5:00. I listen to some music or podcasts, probably 1-4 hours worth depending on the day. When I'm home I use the iPhone for random stuff like playing games or messing around with other apps. I probably talk on the actual phone for less than 30 minutes a day, and send/receive maybe 5 texts per day on average (more on weekends). I go to bed at midnight. If I don't plug my iPhone into my car charger at all during the day, I am still left with 40%+ battery life at the end of the day. It's worth noting that I am in the presence of Wi-Fi almost all day long. My house and office both have wi-fi, so I don't access the 3G network that much. That may be my real secret, but I can't confirm it.[/QUOTE]

Before teh update, I could get hours (like loads maybe 8-10) of audio in. After teh update, After a couple of podcasts, I'm down to 50%.

I still think it's push - maybe it causes it to constantly actually USE the wifi.

Wifi is much worse too - more dropouts, and weaker signal. I wonder if it's using more power in this area.

is anybody using iphone 3G on ATT and NOT on the official iphone plan? maybe for example using a SIM card from a blackberry? my bro wants to update his to 3.0 but i read somewhere that non-iphone data plans will not work.

Ugh... I won't have mine until Tuesday. Oy.

All my text messages have been simply erased. Gone. One minute I'm sending a message to a friend, the next I try to open up the response only to find a white screen of blank. WTF? FWIW, I downloaded and installed the update last Thursday. This is bullshit.

Just contacted AT&T trying to get a date on MMS support and got this:

"I apologize and realize this is a feature you would like. ATT is currently unable to make the system changes necessary to support MMS at this time. ATT will make an announcement at a later time if and when we decide to enable this feature. Thank you."

If?

If you're able to, turn off backups (if you can do it without killing the data) and restore from your last iTunes backup

Restore to an earlier backup in iTunes, that should restore most of your text messages.

Yes! My phone has shipped and is now in Fort Worth, Texas.

Fuck AT&T.

Yikes. This is a little scary. Dropped calls? Crap coverage? Text messages disappeared?

That REALLY sucks because I ordered my from an AT&T store on the 20th and received it earlier today (32 GB 3GS)

Is Bluetooth a drain even when not connected to a device? Wondering if I should switch it off if I don't plan to connect a headset that day.

I see almost no penalty when keeping bluetooth on all day.

Apple should fix a stupid Bug. If i write a long SMS (320 chars) the iPhone sent it as a mms... I hate this!
oh... fuck... is there a way to check this? does it still go through if you are on AT&T? fuck.

wats wrong with this? do you get charged more for MMS? i have the cheapest text plan on tmobile and MMS on iphone doesnt cost extra at all

So im about to bite on ordering, im already an att customer (have been for like 10 years)

this whole 35% cashback from live/bing/MS, is it still working?

seems this link still is coming up but its from if your like, a tmobile customer or something, will this work for me? or is this deal dead

http://www.bing.com/cashback/go?c=2...mc_id=191m1&WT.z =[*KeywordID*]&partner=MSN%2

(copy/paste link or it wont work)

There was some question on whether or not it would work for existing AT&T customers. I figured between the wait for the back-order and the not-guarantee of getting the cash, it'd just be easier to go down to the Apple Store and buy one.

So I did.

Can I ask a question about geotagging? I understand that the iPhone will geotag photos taken and attach the location to the image? As a PC user how can I take advantage of this functionality? I can't find anything in Windows (Vista) that uses this function.

Does Picasa use it? I know on the Picasa web albums they have maps built in.

iPhoto on the Mac have it integrated.

Thanks for the link guys using it now. This really is the Jesus phone. It's worth the extra 35 a month not to deal with that shitty touch diamond

Any suggestions for a charging case? Man the iPhone dies quick!

You can mitigate that by playing with the push settings, turning off wifi which may stop the phone for scanning for and occasionally connecting to recognized hotspots automatically and, in a pinch, dimming the brightness a little.

But yeah, it's not exactly a "charge every few days" phone.

before 3.0 i could also write more then 160chars, so i dont think that there is a software limit.
If it's anything like my old phones, anything over limit chops the SMS into two separate messages when received on the other end. Probably doesn't do that anymore and defaults to an MMS message to keep all the content in one message. Just a theory.

Shit that sucks...hope there is a way to turn it off.

Concatenated SMS exists for about a decade IIRC.

The character limit of one SMS is 160 characters indeed, but with phones that support concatenated SMS you can write a text well over that limit and it will send it as a single SMS even though to the operator it will count as several. If the receiver phone supports concatenated SMS as well, it will get it as a single text too.

It will suck for me if the iPhone converts a 320+ char text into an MMS because I pay for each MMS while SMS's are free on my plan (up until 1500 per week) :(

Quick question... buying an iPhone 3GS after my trip to Shanghai. Have they FINALLY made cell phone cases that accommodate a cell phone strap or those little toys yet? You'd think that someone would have, but the VERY few things I found about it were ugly as sin or really unappealing. And I'm going to China, I'll have my pick of these little trinkets, wanna bring one home.

If?

MMS is coming late summer, whoever you talked to was just making shit up. The way you'll be notified is probably by text and an OS update when you plug the phone in.
