Picked up an iphone 3gs 32gb black today. My first smartphone, damn this thing is sexy. All this functionality in my pocket wherever I am, already feels essential.

It only gets more essential as time goes on. I've had an iPhone for 2 years, and if I had to use a regular phone for more than a week I'd strangle somebody.

Thanks, that did the trick

Ugh, notes' font is really ugly

Seriously. I've withheld fapping too much while in the "holy shit new awesome thing" phase, but day by day I'm loving this thing more and more. Adding a contact on the iPhone and having it magically appear on my Address Book here on my Mac is the sexiest thing I've ever seen. Same with calender items (although I wish I could mix and match which calenders I'm looking at on the phone). I don't think I'll be able to own a phone without visual voicemail ever again. The App Store is a thing of beauty, especially thanks to the GAF threads and feedback. Aside from being used to having all my music on me (80 gig iPod Classic) to having to pick and manage, the iPod is amazing. I bought iStat and can check how my Mac at home is doing from anywhere. Remote is dead sexy and adding another wireless link to my brilliantly set up sound system makes me wet. Tons of cheap, cheap wickedly fun bite sized games that are admittedly worth far more than their price of admission, and all of it done so blazingly fast I don't believe it sometimes.

I really do love this thing.

thankfully, you can change it in mail preferences under "fonts and colors".

marker felt is like comic sans slightly less embarrassing second cousin.

Wait until you get addicted to the app store, I know I did. :D

any recommendations?

i dunno. depends.

if you want simple and consistent with the iphone, go with helvetica.

you want something a bit different, you can try a typewriter type font like courier or american typewriter. i'm not really a fan of any of the handwriting fonts but chalkboard is more legible than marker felt (i don't know if this is a standard font with os x or was installed with some other app)

I actually like the classy, kinda dated look you get with futura. century gothic is another favorite.

one thing to note is that the last two fonts aren't installed on the iphone so i don't know how notes will look when synced back to the phone.

edit: they'll show up in marker felt if the font is not installed on the iphone.

When my 3G died during my trip to LA it was like losing an appendage. Not a fate I would wish upon anyone but Tom effin Brady.

Torontonians... what's the word on the cheapest iPhone data plan available? I want to get an iPod Touch but I also need a cellphone, so two birds with one stone...

;)

Really though the 3GS shots are so much better than the 3G :( I would use my camera more if the shots looked this good.

As an aside, remember when Canadians bitched about their original iPhone plans not being unlimited? Apperently after looking at my usage stats, I haven't even used 6 GB of data the entire time I have had my phone, let alone in a month. I would gladly pay $10 a month less for my data plan for a limited plan (4GB? 2GB?). EDIT: Partially recanted. 25 CND for 500 megs? that DOES suck

do you mean outside of official rogers plans? i can't help you there.

i think they offer a 25 dollar 500 MB plan but i think the 1 GB, 30 dollar plan, that includes tethering (for now) is a much better deal.

we're pretty much on par with AT&T and the states for now (actually better off for once).

if you want to reduce monthly costs, your best bet is with your voice plan and perhaps eliminating that 7 dollar "network usage" fee.

I'm considering getting an iPhone from Italy och Belgium since they're not locked to any carriers.

Anyone from Euro-GAF have any experience with this? Store which doesn't markup the price waaay too much like on eBay?

I like the app's new home screen, and it sounds like you can customize it with hot links to commonly-accessed friend profiles. Very handy.

well if you're looking for the best combination, best would probably be the $45 combo plan (if they allow it for the iphone)

http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-plans/45dataplan

150 daytime minutes, unlimited evenings/weekends and 1 GB of data plus your choice of 1000 text messages, my5 or doubled minutes

if you have a phone plan already, well, your options for cheapness suck

None of this will mean anything if they don't improve the stability of the App dramatically. It still crashes and freezes up my phone at the most inopportune times. Probably the only App that actually freezes my phone.

No...

You may wanna try restoring the phone when things get sluggish - I think storage reordering/optimization that you get out of restoring, helps things.
This is a fresh install so nope, it's just Apple fucking up the Japanese text input again. Sigh.

I used "Find My iPhone" today for the first time. My nephew, a toddler, had grabbed my iPhone while no one was looking and put it inside one of his toy train's cargo cars. I assumed I had left it plugged in in the car, as I often do, and didn't know it had gone missing. The toy train went back to my brother and sister-in-law's hotel room.

"Find My iPhone" worked awesomely. It was on vibrate, so having it be able to override that and make the sound was really great.

:D

You have a couple of options.

There's the $45 Mega Value Combo someone already posted, note that it doesn't include Call Display or Voicemail. This comes with 500MB data.

Until July 31 they're running a promo, $30/month for 6GB of data on a 3 year data term. (similar to the one they ran last year) If you want to sign up with this you'll have to pair it with a voice plan of some type, I think the cheapest they go is $25, and most likely won't include texts, caller id, or voicemail.

If you've been with Rogers for a while you'll be able to negotiate deals with retentions (maybe a caller id/voicemail credit, etc etc). If you're going to be a new customer, thats about as cheap as you can get.

You might want to also consider Fido, they have a $60 iPhone plan thats better than the Rogers equivalent (imo) and no System Access Fee(!). They also have the $30/6GB promo afaik, if you were interested in that.

How does it work?

Do you just open the url in safari or can you download it as an app?

You create a link to it on your home screen so it has the full GAF logo and looks like an app, but when you launch it, it automatically opens Safari at the correct URL. It's about as close to being a full fledge app without being an app.

Awesome. Thanks guys.

I should be receiving mine tomorrow. I ordered it on Monday and have been rushing home everyday hoping to have it in the mail. If it's not there tomorrow(Friday), I'll be angry!!

Here's instructions on how to add websites (like the NeoGAF iPhone app) to your home screen (from the iPhone manual):

I won't stop eating at the places I'm comfortable with if I got rich. I'd just add a few more places I don't currently patronize that often because of their prices. :D

Push is coming in 3.1, and Joe said he's adding a video upload feature to 3.0 so 3gs users can upload vids from their phones.

Anyone? current eBay prices are ridiculously high.

So on occasion, Safari will switch to landscape view instead of portrait... and no matter how hard I try, I can't get it to switch back. What's the secret? Is there a way to force it to change perspectives if the accelerometer isn't helping?

Also, how do I re-arrange my icons?

I have a feeling that's related to a sluggish app rather than A broken accelerometer. You could always try gong to yor home screen and hack to safari.

Click and hold to re-arrange apps.

$13-1400 usd?! That's ridiculously high! I believe the 32gb is rleasing in new Zealand next week for around us$900.

The ones from New Zealand are factory unlocked too correct? Might end up buying one from there.

If ATT wasn't so overpriced and there service didn't suck balls I would be jumping on the Iphone. But I get better bang for my buck with Verizon.

I recently converted from Verizon to AT&T so I could get my first ever iPhone. Granted, I don't use my phone for talking so much as email and texting, but I gotta say I'm very happy with the service. Around the NYC area anyway, I haven't encountered any problems. In fact, areas where Verizon used to be unavailable give me a minimum of 3 bars on my iPhone now.

Plus the added functionality (and lower price of the plan) made it worth the change over for me.

So I was at the Cheap Trick/Poison/Def Leppard concert last night (which was a blast btw. 16,000 fans in attendance) and I took some video with the iPhone during Poison's set. I have to say for a phone with a tiny speaker, it does a decent job at capturing video from a concert where the noise level is through the roof.

When you say better bang for your buck you mean paying 4 dollars for a ringtone?

Can't really speak for the 3gs, but I'm using a new Zealand iPhone in the US on t-mobile. Never jailbroken or otherise hacked around with the phone. Upgraded everything I could, works like a charm!

Just after roughly choosing a comparable smartphone plan on Verizon to my iPhone plan with AT&T, I am in no way seeing a savings. In fact, I would be paying more. Additionally, I would be paying more for the Diamond compared to an iPhone 16GB 3GS.

Verizon with the HTC Touch Diamond
450 Minutes - $40
Unlimited Data- $45
1500 Texts - $15
Visual Voicemail - $3(Really Verizon?)
Total - $103

AT&T with iPhone 3G or 3GS
450 Minutes - $40
Unlimited Data - $30
1500 Texts - $15
Visual Voicemail - Included
Total - $85

And that's before taxes...

Of course, I guess you could scale back the data plan on Verizon and omit visual voicemail to save a few bucks, but that wouldn't be comparable, would it?

All of that being said, AT&T does indeed suck, notably for the whole customer service thing and 3G coverage outside of metro areas. I think the conclusion is that all phone carriers suck and no matter where the iPhone ends up, you're going to continue to get screwed in some way.

Anyone who claims Verizon is in any way less of a ripoff than AT&T is crazy. They are both damn expensive.

If you want to claim Verizon has better coverage in your East coast city of choice go ahead and say so but let's not act like you save any money using those shifty Verizon crippled phones.
