It can't seriously be this easy...

Go on Craigslist to put up my iPhone 3G for sale, but I see someone is looking for one right near me for $300.

I e-mail them and they get back to me right away. We go back and forth a few times and now we have an appointment in Philly to meet up and exchange the phone for cash.

...am I going to get raped or is this how these things usually work with Craigslist? I've only used the site to find a roomate in the past, not to actually buy/sell anything.

Is there a good application to rip DVDs for the iPhone? I'm using Windows, and Handbrake isn't efficent. I'm currently using DVD Decryptor and MOVAVI to rip and encode. Would like something that does both at the same time like Handbrake. I'm tired of going downstairs to rip stuff.

I have sold a ton of old computer shit on CL. Worst thing that ever happened is a dude kept me waiting too long at a subway station so I bailed.

Also, haggling price can be frustrating.

But no, never been raped. Fingers crossed.

Score...this justifies my full retail purchase of the iPhone 3GS!

$700 - $300 = $400 < $500 it would have been with the upgrade option...and I didn't have to extend my contract!

The dangerous thing about this is that I now will immediately upgrade to whatever the newest iPhone is without hesitation as long as the older models are selling for hundreds of dollars like that.

...fuck I should do this with my MBP when the next revisions come out so I'm good and ready for Diablo 3 :lol

I've sold a Mac a year for 4 years. lose around 300 to 600 bucks max each time.

and each time it's been worth it (because I am insane with computers)

I was able to sell my 16 GB iphone 3G for 400 CDN since I spent the time to unlock it. after using my phone carrier credits (Fido dollars) upgrading to the new 16GB 3gs cost me 150 bucks with no contract extension... and that was cheaper than the flip video that I was thinking of getting.

I know it's obvious but I'll say it anyway. Bring a friend with you. Something about Craigslist is unsettling to me, I don't think I'll ever use it.
Hope all goes well for you though.

Also wanted to add that I got my new 32Gb 3GS a few weeks ago, my GAF account hadn't cleared by then though.
So far as a first time smart phone owner, oh my god they are awesome. The amount of stuff you can do is mind boggling for someone who has been stuck with this for about 4-5 years:

The Facebook app alone is probably going to lower my grades this year I am that obsessed with it. Sucks too because its my last year of high school. :/
But who cares I have an iPhone right? :lol
Speaking of which, any news on when this 3.0 update for the Facebook app is coming? It's been sitting on 98% for a while now.

So I'm going on vacation to Austria in a couple days and I would like to take my Iphone with me for music purposes and also if I need to use a phone up there ( swapping SIM cards ) but I'm faced with a tiny dilema.

I don't wanna do something stupid like leave my data on while I'm gone and have a thousand dollar bill due to roaming charges. So I'm wondering if their are some work arounds like putting the phone in airplane mode until I can get a local SIM card so I can have my music for the plane ride. Also I forgot the tool that opens the SIM card dock so can I do it with like a toothpick or something?

Thanks in advance

Well putting it in airplane mode is one way of doing it, it means all means of data are shut off, and you'll still be able to listen to music etc. However if you still want to receive calls and use wifi etc you can just turn off data roaming in General>Network> and turn it off there. Also Location Services, just incase (its what I did). No phone bill and I could still use wifi and receive texts and things :)

Got my white 16gb iPhone 3G today. Telia here in Sweden had a campaign selling them cheap.

This is my first Apple product in five years and I must say that the packaging is awesome. I remember opening up my iPod mini and being equally amazed back in 2004. It's neat and unfolds like an origami.

Updated to software 3.0 and am now installing my apps and syncing some music. The device feels good in the hand and the glass has a nice resistance to it when sliding my fingers across. I know I'm really late to the party but wow! How the fuck did I ever manage texting without a QWERTY keyboard? And why the hell do regular phones have all these unecessary buttons and obtuse UI?

(EDIT) iTunes crashed on me twice when syncing. Ungh, let's have another go.

Allright thanks guys :D, one last question. Are international texts included in the unlimited texting plan or is there a surcharge for each one

Has anyone done any research regarding using powersupport anti-glare screen savers on the 3GS? Since the 3GS has a anti-fingerprint coating, are the screensavers damaging to this coating?
The films use cling technology so there isn't any sticky residues or grime when you remove them. Apple may claim to have fingerprint proof coatings on the 3GS, but it's not on par with the anti-glare film.

There's nothing to worry about!

Why Japan’s Cellphones Haven’t Gone Global

2jg55ig.jpg

At first glance, Japanese cellphones are a gadget lover’s dream: ready for Internet and e-mail, they double as credit cards, boarding passes and even body-fat calculators.

Competition is fierce in the relatively small Japanese cellphone market, with eight manufacturers.

But it is hard to find anyone in Chicago or London using a Japanese phone like a Panasonic, a Sharp or an NEC. Despite years of dabbling in overseas markets, Japan’s handset makers have little presence beyond the country’s shores.

“Japan is years ahead in any innovation. But it hasn’t been able to get business out of it,”
said Gerhard Fasol, president of the Tokyo-based IT consulting firm, Eurotechnology Japan.

The Japanese have a name for their problem: Galápagos syndrome.

Japan’s cellphones are like the endemic species that Darwin encountered on the Galápagos Islands — fantastically evolved and divergent from their mainland cousins — explains Takeshi Natsuno, who teaches at Tokyo’s Keio University.

This year, Mr. Natsuno, who developed a popular wireless Internet service called i-Mode, assembled some of the best minds in the field to debate how Japanese cellphones can go global.

“The most amazing thing about Japan is that even the average person out there will have a superadvanced phone,” said Mr. Natsuno. “So we’re asking, can’t Japan build on that advantage?”

The only Japanese handset maker with any meaningful global share is Sony Ericsson, and that company is a London-based joint venture between a Japanese electronics maker and a Swedish telecommunications firm.

And Sony Ericsson has been hit by big losses. Its market share was just 6.3 percent in the first quarter of 2009, behind Nokia of Finland, Samsung Electronics and LG of South Korea, and Motorola of Illinois.

Yet Japan’s lack of global clout is all the more surprising because its cellphones set the pace in almost every industry innovation: e-mail capabilities in 1999, camera phones in 2000, third-generation networks in 2001, full music downloads in 2002, electronic payments in 2004 and digital TV in 2005.

Japan has 100 million users of advanced third-generation smartphones, twice the number used in the United States, a much larger market. Many Japanese rely on their phones, not a PC, for Internet access.

Indeed, Japanese makers thought they had positioned themselves to dominate the age of digital data. But Japanese cellphone makers were a little too clever. The industry turned increasingly inward. In the 1990s, they set a standard for the second-generation network that was rejected everywhere else. Carriers created fenced-in Web services, like i-Mode. Those mobile Web universes fostered huge e-commerce and content markets within Japan, but they have also increased the country’s isolation from the global market.

Then Japan quickly adopted a third-generation standard in 2001. The rest of the world dallied, essentially making Japanese phones too advanced for most markets.

At the same time, the rapid growth of Japan’s cellphone market in the late 1990s and early 2000s gave Japanese companies little incentive to market overseas. But now the market is shrinking significantly, hit by a recession and a graying economy; makers shipped 19 percent fewer handsets in 2008 and expect to ship even fewer in 2009. The industry remains fragmented, with eight cellphone makers vying for part of a market that will be less than 30 million units this year.

Several Japanese companies are now considering a push into overseas markets, including NEC, which pulled the plug on its money-losing international cellphone efforts in 2006. Panasonic, Sharp, Toshiba and Fujitsu are said to be planning similar moves.

“Japanese cellphone makers need to either look overseas, or exit the business,” said Kenshi Tazaki, a managing vice president at the consulting firm Gartner Japan.

At a recent meeting of Mr. Natsuno’s group, 20 men and one woman crowded around a big conference table in a skyscraper in central Tokyo, examining market data, delivering diatribes and frequently shaking their heads.

The discussion then turned to the cellphones themselves. Despite their advanced hardware, handsets here often have primitive, clunky interfaces, some participants said. Most handsets have no way to easily synchronize data with PCs as the iPhone and other smartphones do.

Because each handset model is designed with a customized user interface, development is time-consuming and expensive, said Tetsuzo Matsumoto, senior executive vice president at Softbank Mobile, a leading carrier. “Japan’s phones are all ‘handmade’ from scratch,” he said. “That’s reaching the limit.”

Then there are the peculiarities of the Japanese market, like the almost universal clamshell design, which is not as popular overseas. Recent hardware innovations, like solar-powered batteries or waterproofing, have been incremental rather than groundbreaking.

The emphasis on hardware makes even the newest phones here surprisingly bulky. Some analysts say cellphone carriers stifle innovation by demanding so many peripheral hardware functions for phones.

The Sharp 912SH for Softbank, for example, comes with an LCD screen that swivels 90 degrees, GPS tracking, a bar-code reader, digital TV, credit card functions, video conferencing and a camera and is unlocked by face recognition.

Meanwhile, Japanese developers are jealous of the runaway global popularity of the Apple iPhone and App Store, which have pushed the American and European cellphone industry away from its obsession with hardware specifications to software. “This is the kind of phone I wanted to make,” Mr. Natsuno said, playing with his own iPhone 3G.

The conflict between Japan’s advanced hardware and its primitive software has contributed to some confusion over whether the Japanese find the iPhone cutting edge or boring. One analyst said they just aren’t used to handsets that connect to a computer.

The forum Mr. Natsuno convened to address Galápagos syndrome has come up with a series of recommendations: Japan’s handset makers must focus more on software and must be more aggressive in hiring foreign talent, and the country’s cellphone carriers must also set their sights overseas.

“It’s not too late for Japan’s cellphone industry to look overseas,” said Tetsuro Tsusaka, a telecom analyst at Barclays Capital Japan. “Besides, most phones outside the Galápagos are just so basic.”

It's really all about the software isn't it? That's why Motorola is doing so badly in the mobile phone market and also the same reason why Sony lost the portable music battle to Apple.

Definitly a surcharge. Typically ranges from $.25 to $1 USD depending on which international carrier your carrier is partnered with. Sending texts when I was in Mexico earlier this summer cost $.75 each.

Kind of late notice since the day's almost over, but SkyVoyager and SkyGazer are free today only (normally $14.99 and $2.99). Pretty good astronomy apps if that interests you.

Thanks. Got both.

I have a friend who can get me employee discount on an O2 iPhone but they're being really awkward and not giving a proper discount on the 3GS at the minute. I really don't want to get a 3G regardless of the good deal he can get me.

My 2 options as I see them are:

Get a 3G with his discount, unlock it, sell it, and buy a 3GS. The 3G will be free, so I'm thinking overall the 3GS will cost me ~£150 when all is said and done.

Wait patiently and hope O2 decide to offer decent employee discount on the 3GS, does anyone here have any ideas on this situation?

Any help welcome, thanks.

Find a different O2? I got the employee discount (30%) on a new IPhone 3GS thanks to a friend.

Was that just on the handset or on the monthly cost? My friend can get me like £50 or whatever off a 3GS but could get me a discount on a 3G and 30% off the contract bringing it down to £25 which is acceptable for me.

He says O2 are simply not giving any decent discount on the line rental for 3GS's.

Didn't pay for the 3GS (entered a 24 month contract...yeah) but I do get the discount on the monthly cost.

Jaadu's update:

What's New

Version 3.0 has a host of useful new features:

* Full screen view: A first in any remote desktop application on the iPhone!
o With 3 fingers, do a vertical swipe up to hide the statusbar + toolbar
o Another 3 finger vertical swipe up brings up the keyboard
o Downward swipes remove the keyboard, and restore the status bar
* Cut/Copy/Paste/Undo support:
o When you bring up the keyboard, you can type as you did earlier
o The letters show up without darkening the main view
o If you tap the compose button, you can now compose your message using cut, copy, and paste, as well as the autocomplete feature of the iPhone keyboard!
o Shake the iPhone to Undo any text editing
o Once you've composed your message -- simply tap the Send button
* Remote Copy:
o This needs to be seen to be believed!
o In the remote computer, select some text, and choose the Copy option (Ctrl-C or Cmd-C, or choose the option from the menu)
o The text will be brought into the iPhone's copy buffer, and can be pasted anywhere on the iPhone!
o This feature requires Vine Server on Mac, and works with any VNC server on Windows. Apple Remote Desktop and Screen Sharing do not support Remote Copy at this time.
* Google-based login:
o We're not 100% ready to launch this just now. Check back in a couple of days -- this one's worth waiting for!

One of my fave apps :D

So this dude must be lying to me. I'll have to have another chat with him, I just never had a reason to doubt him. Just checking, your friend didn't do anything untoward right? My friend is a manager so has to do everything by the book.

Finally picked up my 16gb 3Gs last night (I had originally ordered a white phone, but it suffered some damage in transit so I got a black phone instead).

After using my ipod touch 1G, it's nice to graduate up to the iphone but I still love and will continue to use my ipod. :)

Now to look for some more apps...

Fucking hell. That shit needs to go on sale, stat. :'(

And, as a small aside, there needs to be a way to get Vine Server to run in the background, prefpanes style.

Anyone having problems with apps icons getting mixed up? Scramble now has the msnbc icon and its driving me nuts... Uninstalling / reinstalling doesn't do anything.

Nifty video streaming web app:

http://iphone.akamai.com/

Visit this site on your iPhone and you can stream a couple of live streams as well as a number of on-demand video clips. Personally, the main reason to use this is because they have LIVE 24 hour NASA TV streaming and it works great!

Not sure if it's been mentioned but I really like the Revvy Revision3 web app for streaming Co-op and Tekzilla.

http://revvy.2bitapps.com/

If you're on wifi be sure to click the wifi box on the top left corner of the show index page, the default is 3G.

I had that problem over the weekend.

Try uninstalling and redownloading on your phone, but when the download/install progress bar is about 40% through pause it(by clicking on the app(Scramble?) icon) and turn off your phone(by holding the power button and swiping once you get the power prompt) and power it back up. Continue that download/install on the fresh reboot. I *think* that's the sequence that I used to fix it.

Man, Last year, when Jaadu was first released, it went on sale for 24 hours for like $5. I passed, because they stated that that version was only updatable by paid updates - I didn't know how they would implement that, but I decided to pass. Afterwards, they issued a statement saying that they couldn't, and that all updates would be free. I felt like I missed out.

I have their TouchPad app (it was 99c, not sure about now) and it works really well - they best thing is you don't need client software on your mac to make it work - it just uses teh default screen sharing on the Leopard.

Hi everyone. Maybe this is a silly question, but I'm a little confused.

Let's say I have an iPhone. I pay for the lowest plan...450 minutes a month + data. I have a friend who also wants an iPhone, and I will let him join my plan with me. What are my options here? Is it possible for us to share the 450 minutes and just add an additional voice plan (in this case splitting the cost of the minutes we won't use and just each pay for our own data) or must we upgrade to a FamilyTalk plan? I looked at the website but it prompted me to add another individual plan or add a Family Plan. I didn't want to add another individual plan (that didn't really make sense to me as it would come to more than a family plan), and I don't really want a Family Plan. Am I stuck getting one?

Thanks and sorry for the dumb question.

I'm pretty sure a family plan is your best bet. They are actually a decent saver, especially if you and your friend text a lot, unlimited texting is 30 per family plan, 20 each phone on individual plan.

We don't text-- we just use email. Looks like I'm gonna just have to eat the $20 jack-up-in-price. I really want an iPhone.

heh. It's always a little strange to see names that I 'associated' with other phones in this thread. jonny, TurtleSnatcher, etc., who were pretty gung ho about other devices and not too fond of the iPhone. It's awesome, though, too see these guys be able to bring experience with a lot of different handsets to discussions.

Sad to hear about the Storm, though. I thought it looked pretty awesome when it was announced...

It shouldn't have launched until this most recent firmware, and even then the benefits it offers (multitasking...) are offset by the complete ass speed and clunkiness of the user interface.

I have to pay the cancellation fee but it's worth it to be done with this POS.

Wow, I'm getting about 150 kb/s tethering my iPhone connection to my PC (internet went out, fuckin comcast). Is this about normal speeds, because this is amazing!

Jesus, I have the unlimited data plan but I see now why ATT is scared shitless about offering tethering to it's customers O.O

Hey guys, I have a bit of a problem.

I have a 3GS, and when using the Facebook application my Facebook inbox just suddenly stopped showing. The badge updates with the right amount of messages in my inbox but it just stays stuck on 'loading' and no messages show. Its weird because my sent messages come up fine. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling again but it failed to amend the problem. Anyone else having the same thing, or know how to fix it?
