Finally gave in and bought AwesomeNote.
As it's title suggests, it is indeed awesome.

+ Themes
+ Easy to navigate
+ Beautiful Design
+ Folders = Organization for us OCDs
+ Good amount of customization (fonts, font sizes, etc.)
+ Different pages for more then 5 folders (why do Apps only need 1 main page, designers?!)

- No picture support
- Needs "to-do" section w/ check boxes.
- Needs more themes
- Needs more folder colors
- Each "section" needs to retain certain properties (e.g.: list view for My Ideas, icon view for Work, etc.)
- A little overpriced, but considering how BRID is on the ball with updates, it seems like this investment is well worth it.

The future updates sound pretty sweet and will remedy most of the cons.

heh. It's always a little strange to see names that I 'associated' with other phones in this thread. jonny, TurtleSnatcher, etc., who were pretty gung ho about other devices and not too fond of the iPhone. It's awesome, though, too see these guys be able to bring experience with a lot of different handsets to discussions.

As soon as andrex quits shilling for android and gets an iPhone, the final domino will have fallen. I'm definitely keeping my eyes open to other handsets, but I'm not going to settle for anything less than the best, and that is clearly iPhone as of right now. Some phones might be better fits for other people, but overall Apple has the best phone on the market right now.

Every single contender has had some big flaw (the Hero is a sluggish mess), and the app store is becoming that one intangible that will push the iPhone over the top even if another phone can rival it in every other area.

I'm probably alone in this, but for me syncing with iTunes is essential. I buy all my music/movies/tv shows through iTunes and the ability to just jack in my phone and have it get all the delicious goodness I've been buying is a must have.

The interface is butter. The apps are vast and awesome. The keyboard is no longer an issue. The browser is fantastic.

Really, other phones just don't seem to get it. The Pre keeps harping about it's ability to run multiple apps at the same time...but who gives a shit about that when iPhone apps almost always drop you back to where you were and open/close in less than a second? The only app that really requires being open all the time is an IM app, and BeejiveIM with notifications kills that need.

I'm pretty sure my personal reliance on the iTunes store has made me an iPhoner for life.

So Im thinking of unlocking my iPhone, but I got a few questions. Sorry if they have been answered before. I have 3.0, I assume it's unlockable? What about apps I bought? Will they still work? Can I access the app store with an unlocked iPhone? And for the big reason I want to unlock, can I use custom message sounds? Like can I use a custom sound for when I get text messages?

I agree that the ecosystem is important, but I think I can free myself if a better phone with a similar ecosystem comes along. I became a fan of the Zune software and I'd be interested if a Zune phone ever gets announced.

The one problem would be the apps I've paid for. The music I can move, and I don't buy music videos/movies etc. because of DRM. It's the awesome apps that would have the most sway, as I said in the previous post. I haven't paid for a whole bunch, but still, by the time my contract is up next April, I'll have a significant investment there.

Do you mean jailbreak?

Jailbreak = open up the iPhone OS software.
Unlock = open up the SIM to other networks.

In any case, when I had my phone jailbroken before, all other phone functions worked perfectly fine. I can't really speak to what you can do with a jailbroken phone, but there are plenty of folks who could fill in the blank on that one for you.

I'm guessing you mean jailbreak? Unlocking is for when you want to use a different carrier. If I am correct, yes, jailbreaking works perfectly, and you can customize every aspect of your iphone with the tools Cydia provides. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

I have well over $100 in apps and rising. It would take a phone several orders of magnitude greater than the iPhone to sway me, and I don't see that happening, especially since Apple will refresh the line every year. I'm locked in tight.

Even people I know who don't buy many apps have several that they use constantly. This is a huge problem for every other manufacturer. The more time goes by, the more apps people download, the more they are locked in.

That kinda spells doom for Verizon's app store strategy doesn't it?

If I recall correctly, someone mentioned that they charge a monthly fee for their apps instead of a one time fee? If that's the case there is virtually no "lock in" action going on with their app store, and it's likely going to work against them.

Verizon's app implementation is the stupidest thing ever. It's archaic to have to pay monthly fees to keep apps. As much as folks complain about AT&T (and personally, the only issue I have is their pricing), I can't imagine being locked into Verizon's stupid ecosystem.

The Verizon store is just a rebrand of the exact same strategy they've always used for shitty mobile games with a few shitty productivity apps thrown in. It's a marketing trap for truly stupid people, nothing more.

Create spoken caller ID ringtones for iPhone via AppleScript

For a long time, I've wanted the ability for the iPhone to speak the name of the caller, based on matching the inbound number to the numbers in Contacts. I waited and waited for iPhone OS 2.x ad then 3.x to do this for me, and do it better, but got sick of waiting. So instead, I wrote an AppleScript app I call Contact Caller ID + Sound Ringtone Maker. I've used this script to generate over 100 in-use ringtones, and use it to customize a ringtone for a contact or two almost daily now.

This AppleScript will generate a spoken name file, optionally looking for first, last, and nicknames, for selected Address Book Contacts. For example, "Jennifer Frickin' Connelly is calling....". It will optionally add a traditional (or other) ringtone of your choice to either the beginning or end of a new spoken-text ringtone file:

"Rob Griffiths is calling... [old phone ring here]; [repeat]"
"[old phone ring here] ... Steve Jobs is calling... ; [repeat]"
The script will then add that newly-created file to iTunes, ready for your next sync with iPhone...

This should be a feature of the OS--from day 1

offtopic: what they say about version 3 of Apple products is true. The thread has got a large influx of new users and rarely do we have comments on "why can't my phone do xxx" (well, except for mms feature). I kinda miss the old debates about copy&paste :lol

I don't understand the app store on my blackberry right now. There's App World (slow and shitty), but there's also Application Center...only lists like 4 or 5 applications but is sometimes pushing new ones to me from RIM. New ones I don't want at all, but whatever.

Wow, I'm getting about 150 kb/s tethering my iPhone connection to my PC (internet went out, fuckin comcast). Is this about normal speeds, because this is amazing!

Jesus, I have the unlimited data plan but I see now why ATT is scared shitless about offering tethering to it's customers O.O
Is AT&T going to charge for tethering?

These companies are scrambling like mad to catch up, a cohesive strategy is secondary to getting a bullet point on the spec list.

Hey QQ. Can I rent a movie on iTunes on my iMac and then sync it to my iPhone to watch it?

Is there anything special I need to do? Or do I just pick the movie in the video tab in the sync section and just sync it??

Thanks

yes, you can do that.

there'll be a pair of boxes in the video tab (pc, then iphone) that'll let you transfer the rental to the iphone. it'll copy it over once you choose the movie and start the sync.

Does anyone have any idea when the Tom Tom app is coming? I thought they said summer, but I'd love to know any more details.

I cannot wait for this app/ hardware. Just hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

just saw this on 9to5mac.com

NAVIGON

As Engadget notes, Navigon has released North American (1.12 GB iTunes link) to go with its European version of its Turn-By-Turn GPS navigation software. The software is one of the first of its kind (with G-Maps and Sygic Mobile maps - thanks commenters) to have a one-time charge ($70) rather than a monthly fee levied by AT&T's software, and others.
Readers should note that TomTom's hardware/software solution should be available on the iPhone (and iPod touch?) by the end of summer. Interestingly, you can also get a full, stand-alone TomTom One for $48 which makes these software only versions seem more than a little pricey (hint: wait a few months for price wars to begin). We have to admit, however, that this one looks great. Video below.

1000% positively yes under all all circumstances. The only question is how much they'll charge.

I have some small glimmer of hope that the rumored AT&T/Apple drama and the WWDC incidents (which I honestly think were blown way out of proportion) may lead to something actually fair, or even generous.

I have a large glimmer of hope that I live in a fantasy land, though. :'(

Can anyone help me, I have a weird problem. A couple of my applications it seems have been corrupted, their icons are the icons from other applications. Like my AIM app's icon is the icon for Oregon Trail. Ironically, my Facebook's application icon is the icon from Fandango, which is another F. I've tried deleting and reinstalling the apps but the problem remains.

They charge $30 for all other smartphones which cost just as much monthly as the iPhone...I really think there is absolutely no way it will be less than $30. If they go over $30 then they're just asking for a shitstorm.

After upgrading my 2g to 3.0 it crashes a lot. I download apps from cydia and the phone crashes, refusing to boot up again. Ugh. Apple needs to do a better job with this OS.

Wait - you're jailbreaking your phone, installing cydia, download apps that (generally) use unsupported APIs and native lib bindings and then blaming Apple....

Really???

Yes. And they worked before on 2.2.1. Simple things like winterboard and edge icons crash it. The ActivateMMS2G worked once and when winterboard crashed it and when I reinstalled everything, ActivateMMS2G then crashed it. There's no consistancy.

So yeah, if everything worked before on an earlier OS version then why not expect it to work now? I should just be happy Apple was gracious enough to let me own an iPhone?

Wow man.

Wow.

I just wanted to know if anyone else was having the same problem. I see that a few others on a few different forums have had the same issues I am (among many, many other issues) and I figure someone on GAF may know a solution.

I was happy to hear I wouldn't have to use Swirly MMS to send pictures and then I find out MMS doesn't work with 2G iPhones... only recently was ActivateMMS2G released and I finally upgrade only to find out it's more trouble than it's worth. I've got a love/hate thing going on with this phone. :P

I'll be getting my iphone in the next few weeks as a birthday present and I was wondering what the correct wallpaper size was for the 3G s? I kinda want to get the ball rolling and start making some/finding some online.

Have you ever considered that the jailbreak software itself changes every time Apple releases an update? They have to find new holes, new cracks. So yes, it is unreasonable to assume that it will work perfectly with 3.0 as it did with 2.2.1.

Nothing is illegal in what I did to my phone. It's illegal to use T-mobile and custimize my backgrounds?

I didn't, really. I assumed the Dev-Team did as well as last time.

I narrowed it down to ActivateMMS2G. It allows 2G users to actualy use the MMS function. It was never a hardware limit like what I read earlier. Leads me to believe why Apple doesn't let the 2G users use MMS on the new OS. sending pictures is entirely possible over edge. Maybe they want everyone to upgrade to the 3G or 3Gs?

Wanting to go back to 2.2.1, I tried to roll back my iphone but it never worked. Looks like I'm stuck with this OS version until I'm able to get either 3.1 (which is in beta 2 right now and may not fix everything) or get the 3G.

Well, I should be blaming the Dev-Team... doesn't really matter who is at fault though (I was frustrated at the time I wrote that), I just wanted my phone to work!

I gots more questions about iPhone jailbreaking. Can I use a custom alert sound? Like if I get a text message? What about hiding some of the built in apps, like stocks?

Fine, it's not illegal, /roll eyes, it's still completely asinine to expect Apple to develop firmware that supports hacked software.

You should be blaming whoever makes the jailbreak software, not Apple.

I believe you can do the first thing, and you can definitely do the second thing.

It isn't beneficial to Apple to have people staying on their older 2G iPhone's. They would rather have them on a 3GS or if not then a 3G if possible.

That's why they add features and functions to the newest hardware and leave these off the older hardware - to simply get you to upgrade and spend more money on the hardware/contract.

As for your jailbroken apps not working properly - that isn't Apple's fault as these apps are programmed without Apple's tools, quality testing or consent. Apple have no obligation to jailbroken iPhone's or programs for them.

ActivateMMS2G does not work for everyone - in fact it a source of a number of bricks of iPhones. Yes there is facility to turn on MMS, and yes there is most assuredly a reason why Apple didn't turn it on. Apple gets a cut of royalties on your plan so they most definitely would have wanted you to be able to use that feature so they could make more money. The problem IS in the hardware and its negotiation with the various networks. To make it work - the carrier has to allow it. MMS == SMS + WAP + special protocol (implemented in hardware many times) + URL magic

I always find consumer opinion fascinating. You would rather assume that Apple has a malicious plot to not enable MMS on the older phones yet they are a company whose device value is measured in utility. Apple has so many supplemental revenue streams from the iPhone that the assertion simply doesn't make sense. If they wanted to derive money from that function they'd simply charge for it. I've heard similar allegations about the video in the iPhone 3G, when its clear that the older phone's camera simply isn't up to the task and takes quite shitty video.

The real question you should ask yourself is why the carrier didn't provide a gateway for MMS that was either compatible with the older iPhones or provide an MMS application that could proxy the MMS data to a gateway at the carrier that would then translate that into a valid MMS message. The fact that sending pictures works over EDGE is in fact irrelevant since that is not the mechanism that MMS uses to deliver data.
