Yes. I'm wondering if anyone had to pay a/the deposit and when it showed up.
If you did all the steps online and it didn't show up, I would think youre fine, but you can always call AT&T and ask.

Can you please elaborate on what kind of mobile Internet you had in 1999?

I can :)

well, late 2000. I had the hottest samsung flip phone with a 1" B&W LCD screen. cost me 250 bucks but it was thin andslick as hell.

It cost me 50 cents to view pixelated B&W nudie pics or check my banking account (to see if I could afford to view more pixelated B&W nudie pics).

good times.

as you said, we all know that the internet existed on phones before but it either was a pain to navigate or too slow to be worth the effort.

As far as cases go, I went with the Switcheasy Capsule Rebel for my 3GS and I absolutely love the thing.

Here's the site: Switcheasy

And here're a few pics of my case:

The web browsing on the sidekick was practically useless. Beyond that, any "gushing" going on in here is not due to a belief that mobile internet began with Apple. We're not idiots and most of us are not new to smartphones.
Web browsing on it wasn't useless. It's better now, obviously, but it was far from useless. Anyway, I'm also not stating that anyone here is saying mobile internet began with Apple.

I only made my comment to spark some discussion about pre-iPhone life for those of us who have been web browsing on the go for around a decade or so. Calm down, buddy. No need to get defensive. Don't worry, you're so great at the internet and technology follows your suit :lol

Re: Cases

I just bought a Case-Mate Smooth. It seems nice for those of us who like a minimal design. The inside is also coated well so that it won't scratch like an incase slider does.

You are wasting your time.

It's so weird to see people talking about Internet everywhere like it hasn't existed. I think I've had mobile Internet in some fashion for a decade. The iPhone does do it the best. However, there still isn't an IM system like my OG Sidekick had back in the day. So well integrated.

Anyway, it's true, though, I can't imagine being without Internet at my fingertips anywhere I go. But to see you guys gush about it is hilarious. Welcome to the 21st century, I guess :lol

Then you've only been skimming the thread. I continually say that the iPhone doesn't do any single thing new - it's how they implement it into a fashion (software and hardware) that makes it intuitive for the end user such that people ACTUALLY use it.

I've had internet on my mobile before the iPhone. But it didn't DO what the iPhone does. I could find a restaurant, by logging into gprs, or by texting the carrier's service, waiting for a reply sms identifying a list, calling them to see if they are nearby and so on.

On the iphone, it's go to maps, type in restaurant, and it pops a bunch of stuff up - click on the nearest to call. Heck, I can find directions before that, I can get reviews, I can friggin' look at the restaurant using street view.

But the point is, is that it's not only that I CAN do that, it's that I DO do that. the interface makes sense. It's simple, and effective. The GENERAL user does that. How many devices are packed full of features that people don't use? Apple released a number (I forget), but they were boasting about x% of people using y number of features, which was unprecedented.

Damn, you've got some serious rose-colored glasses on about "the good old days..."

I had one of those and surfing the web on it sucked balls.

Firstly...yay, black and white screen in 2002!

Next, every site had to go through that damn "Danger" proxy server. When you could get Danger to send you something back (after waiting about 40 seconds to a full minute for a single web page to load over that shitty "2.5G" GPRS network,) usually Danger had fucked up the formatting and removed most of the graphics/pictures. Usually though, Danger had to send you a "Data Services Unavailable" message at least once out of every three time you requested a web page, so you were happy to get anything.

Plus there was zero Java support, so any pulldown tabs, email boxes, page controls, ect. were fucked.

So most pages could only be viewed. And viewed BADLY, because there was no way to zoom in on the tiny, shrunken, over-pixelated black-and-white images that the Danger proxy server did manage to send you. If there was a .gif on the page, you were lucky if you got the first frame.

I eventually traded that POS in for a Nokia 2003 model I had shipped to me from Europe for way too much money, but it totally sucked too. At least it could do some Java though.

Just want to chime in here with another 'pick up the 3GS over the 3G' opinion.

If you have to pay a more expensive upgrade fee, the decision is less clear cut, but if I were just getting into the iPhone with the 99/199/299 pricing, the 3GS is definitely worth the extra 100 bucks.

In a year, the 3G is going to be feeling mighty slow, and even though the next iPhone will be out, you'll probably only qualify for more expensive 'upgrade pricing' if you buy a 3G right now.

Question about the US cellphone subsidised/locked phone deal (not iPhone, just in general).

What happens to a locked phone after your contract ends, and you don't want to continue service? Does it become a useless brick? Or are the carrier's obliged to unlock it for you?

Oh, it wasn't that great. Not sure where I implied anything about "good ol' days." I don't think anyone who likes technology has any desire to ever go back to the way things were, no matter what. Anyway, Danger's servers worked alright for me. I definitely remember reading GAF on it :lol

mrkgoo: I couldn't find the Great Wall restaurant in Washington, DC using my iPhone. So there. Seriously though, I wondered where that restaurant was. Google Maps gave me the right address, according to a quick internet search of the address. I called up the place using its listed number but it was disconnected. I wonder if it went out of business. Oh well. Totally OT ;)

They will unlock it for you, in my experiences with TMo. Most carriers will for phones out of contract. I think the iPhone is a big exception to this.

I thought that you're supposed to be able to unlock it after the first year. For every other phone but the iphone you can call your provider to request an unlock code to use your phone overseas (for instance).

For the iPhone you can just jailbreak and unlock it.

Interesting. Why is the iPhone an exception? What happens to all those people who had 1st gen iPhones that left AT&T?

They paid for a device that is no longer a phone :/

The US cellphone industry is, well, borked.

I realise that you can always jailbreak, but that's not ideal.

Whoever is blocking the official unlock for people who leave (aT&T or Apple) is really ruining it.

The system SHOULD be: Subsidised iPhone, under contract. Unlocked version available (full unsubsidised price). If you break your contract, you pay the difference to the unlocked version. THIS is better for the consumers, as it will breed competition. It really is a monopoly at the moment.

I understand why it isn't like that - I have hunch it was part of Apple's doing, curse them. When they introduced it, they wanted the iPhone to be where it is now - a revolutionary internet communicator, as they put it. For it to ever become that, it HAD to have a forced unlimited internet connection.

But they are there now. It's the number 1 smartphone. Heck, it's the number one camera on Flickr. It's time to open it up - people will buy it regardless of the internet connection now. The brand is huge. The only risk is that maybe a bunch of people will get the phone without a connection and the phone being dubbed 'just a phone', but the momentum of the brand is too huge for that have any effect in my opinion.

It's the same issue in Canada. Rogers and Fido sell the iPhone, but whether you buy it on contract or unsubsidized, it remains locked and they will refuse to unlock the phone for you. It doesn't matter whether you bought it on no contract or your term is up, it's still locked to their network and you can't do anything about it.

Ridiculous.

Love my Griffin Reveal.

It adds almost no weight, protects the back / sides, comes with good screen protector and being able to see the Iphone back through clear plastic is a thing of beauty.

If we're talking cases, my vote is for the Speck Candy Shell

DSqfz.jpg

It's rubber on the inside and hard plastic on the back, so it doesn't feel cheap and silicon like but if you drop it it will bounce and absorb shock. Also looks cool, imo. The new colors are not as bright, so my next case will be a black/black candy shell.

Question regarding Voice Memos:

I recorded something yesterday and it lists it as 0s when it was really like 25 minutes. I'm positive it recorded as I would periodically check. Syncing with iTunes, it won't show up in the Voice Memos Playlist, but it DOES show up in my iTunes folder. When I click it though it says the file is corrupt. There's nothing I can do about this, right?

I had that red and white one, let dirt in under the case and the bottom-front lip tore after about two months of use. The Switcheasy Capsule Rebel is such a better case by leaps and bounds.

The lip is plastic, I've had mine since the 3GS came out and there's no sign of it being weak. According to google, the Switcheasy Capsule Rebel's lip is horrible too. I guess it's all your mileage may vary.

I love the candy shell. I think I am going to order one.

Also, how do I get the keyboard to go sideways reliably? It seems to just do it randomly.

Well, I mean, there's no list in the OP or anything...

:(

rotate the phone so its sidways, then tilt it forward just a bit. should go into landscape.

OMG Thank you that totally worked.

does anybody have trouble making the iphone rotate while walking? not sure if its normal or not, didnt notice it until i upgraded to 3G. no matter what i do i cannot get it rotate if im walking and the phone is bouncing up and down

It's worse than the EDGE, that's for sure. I get at least 20% less duration on my 3GS than I did (or my wife does) in practice w/ the EDGE.

3G is a serial battery rapist. I watch my battery counter plummet whenever I'm on the train actively using it.

Good man. Now buy some games and enjoy. :D

No better time than the present, either.

Notable discounts:

Doom Resurrection: $9.99 -> $2.99
Wolfenstein Classic: $? ->99c
Star Defense: ? -> 99c

BenjaminBirdie - you shouldn't really ask for Must-haves, as this happens every page, but I suggest reading through the App recommendation (one for gaming, and two for off topic) threads that are a good place to start.

I've had iPhone for almost 4 weeks now and I can say it is the best device I've ever owned in my life. A truly life-changing device that I cannot live without. A dream to use. My highest recommendation.

Related to this, there was a survey released today that shows the iPhone 3GS has a 99% satisfaction rate: http://www.appleinsider.com/article...one_3gs_has_99_percent_satisfaction_rate.html. (Clearly everyone is just a batshit insane Apple fanboy.)

The best part is in the "what you don't like about it" category, where AT&T is the clear #1 with 55%.

Yep, I have to hold still for it to adjust.
