Why are you asking? Your phone's busted, so you'll need to have it checked out anyway.

You're not going to get charged unexpectedly for a repair, if that's what you're asking.
Well I can't find a number to call or a place to log in online. I don't live near an apple store.

Anyone here that can recomend a good alarmclock app ?

it has to have an easy to set alarm for multiple alarms per day,I need it so I dont forget to drink a glass of water each 2.5 hours

The built in Alarm Clock will do all of that, and best of all, work when your phone is locked/asleep. I have 4 alarm clocks, Early, Mid Morning, Afternoon and Late. It's easy to quickly turn them off and on or modify the time.

Anybody tried the TomTom app yet ? It's just out.
Waiting for some reviews to be sure ... pretty pricey
It's £59.99 for the UK version and then £79.99 if you want the western europe version. I don't care how good the program is, I'm not buying an iPhone app for that kind of money, no chance.

Holy shit!

$99.99 for that app. I didn't expect that much. That is just the app alone, I wonder how much the entire kit is.

Heh ... I'd use it on both my phone and my loving one's, so compared to a standalone GPS, 70€ ain't that much ...

$99.99 seems like a giant ripoff to me. I can get a brand new TomTom ONE with a 3.5in screen for $130, and somehow just the software is $100 for the iPhone? Sounds like something fishy is going on.

Not fishy, just trying to get their premiums and make up for the 30% cut Apple takes. :)

And I'm sure they don't want to cannibalize the sales of their standalone system either.

While I'm not going to buy it I don't find the pricing terribly outrageous.

I'm in the market to get a new iTouch since my iPod 3G is having some issues. Is now an OK time or do I need to wait for next gen?

WAIT. new ipods always coming out in september.

next gen ipod touches are a month away or less. (should have new camera, cheaper prices and maybe the 3GS chips for better performance)

I picked up the TomTom app, some quick impressions

- Basically the same as a normal TomTom, interface works well on the iPhone
- No Traffic it seems (not that I can get it)
- Worked fine even indoors, drove to the city airport and back fine - no drops but not exactly in the city
- Locks onto the Sat. really really quick
- Red Light cameras are in it
- Interface is really good easy to use with one hand
- Music cuts out and plays again with annoucements
- Can use contacts from the Phone to Navigate too
- Speaker is nice and loud with plenty of voices
- Horizontal display too
- i have a 3G 16gig and it was pretty snappy

A couple of cons so far

- A couple of times it feels behind a few seconds but nothing more then my parents Standalone TomTom
- Couldn't text the Text to Speech names working
- When a Call comes in it quits and has to relock onto the satellite (more of an iPhone thing)

Any more questions feel free to ask.

Also I know it was $99AU but a seperate TomTom is about $150 here, and I dont want another gadget in the car.

Will do, thanks.

Well, it's my birthday this month and for an early bday present, my parents got me an iPhone. I couldn't be more excited to finally have a big boy phone with email and internet.

I'm going to go pick it up today on my lunch break. I've been having a tough time deciding on whether to get the 16GB or the 32GB though. For those of you that have iPhones, do you find it pretty easy to fill up given that you can take pictures, video, download apps, and play music? I wasn't sure if I would use this as my primary music device as I also have a Nano. Any thoughts are welcome!

So I decided to upgrade to a 3gs and trying to figure out the cheapest way to do so. Should I go through ATT, cancel, and pay the ETF? Or just buy from eBay or some other site? I already sold my 16GB 2G and gonna sell my 8GB 2G soon as I find it.

Thanks GAF!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I posted this in the OT iPhone thread a bit ago, but it's not moving and I have to make a decision on this within an hour. So... I'm posting this in here but figure it's very related considering I'll be downloading a healthy amount of games.

As Stoney Mason mentioned, $100 for an extra 16GB will last you more, and it IS worth the price, but keep in mind, the biggest draw of storage space is video.

We can't really answer this for you. Some people will accept 500kbps, others won't. S0me people have a few GB of music, others want to carry their entire collection.

It all depends on what media you have, what media you want to sync, and the size of those files.

I run at the limit of my iPhone (16GB). I don't see the point not to. If I had 32GB, I'd put more stuff on it, if I had an 8GB, I'd put less.

For the record, my iPhone is at about 500MB free:

2vv494z.png

Songs: 1,293, 6.63GB (various mp3/AAC at 128-256kbps, including a handful of music videos)
Movies: ~4GB (5 full-length feature movies at ~1000kbps, plus 2 short films)
Photos: 1.61 GB (2,592 images synced from iPhoto - these are autmatically reduced in quality and size for iphone viewing - you can store full res images as backups, but if I did that, that would be close to 20GB).
Apps: 1.54 GB (60 apps of various size)

I keep 500 free for cycling podcasts (I get backlogged sometimes), and for more photos. If I ever run out of space, I guess I'll cut some full-length movies since I only have them 'just to have them'. Eventually, I might get more selective with my music, but at the moment, that's my whole collection.

SO you see, it really depends. I could use more, but I'm ok as is. 1000kbps is overkill for movie files also, I just don't have my discs to re-encode from.

If I were to buy a new iPhone, I'd go with a bigger one, but depending on your usage, it could be too much. It really depends on what you;re going to put on there. Something to note is that most GPS apps, for example, are over 1GB in size.

Edit:

You'll pretty much throw your nano away. Or relegate it to an exercise device or music player in disposable situations.

My iPod 30GB was relegated to a mass storage device, and my iPod touch is a bedside clock (with weather!). I occasionally use my iPod shuffle, although mostly as a USB key. Actually I think I've lost that somewhere...

Great iPhone Advice

Thanks mrkgoo!

A quick follow up question. What is generally considered a good case to buy for the iPhone? I have a feeling AT&T will try to sell me an overpriced piece of shit in the store. I'm going to buy a screen protector while I'm there however.

Whether you need a case, depends on how careful you are with your devices. Grip it well, and don't be afraid to put finger prints on the back - it's a device meant to be used. A lot of drops probably come about from people trying to be delicate with it and not holding it firmly. If you are likely to be like that, then a case might help.

The 3GS has an anti-oil coating already, but screen protectors I've been fairly unobtrusive.

Personally, I use neither on my phone, and apart from the coating wearing off the piece of plastic over the camera, it's pretty much in perfect shape. I do use a sleeve, however (fashioned from an iMac cleaning cloth :lol).

I bought the TomTom GPS app. Some impressions:

1) Overall, it works pretty well. I used it to drive to a lunch destination, which was about 10 minutes away without using the freeway. The voice was loud and could easily be heard despite driving with the window down (easily audible over the street noise).

2) There were a couple times when the direction to "turn left" came when I was already in the intersection. Assuming you're paying attention and knew from the original direction ("in 400 yards, turn left"), this shouldn't be a big problem, but it did happen twice in a relatively short journey to and back.

3) On my return trip, I was playing music from the iPod. When the voice directions cut in, it is slightly jarring because the music stops abruptly, as opposed to a gradual fade out, which would have been a smoother transition.

4) While driving back listening to music, I received a phone call. I elected not to answer the call, and the voice gave directions over the ringtone (so both played simultaneously). If you don't answer the call, you're not booted out of the TomTom app (which did not have to restart). After the ringtone ended, my music did not return. However, after the TomTom voice gave another direction (e.g., "turn left"), my iPod music returned, which was cool. So if you're worried about phone calls interrupting your navigation, just elect not to answer them.

5) I wish there were an instruction booklet. I've never had GPS before, so it's taking some time to figure out how to set favorites and my home (without being at home). I wonder if there's a way to choose from different voices. I imagine there is, but it's a bit awkward fumbling around without an instruction manual.

6) Also on the way back, I elected not to take the freeway (which is where the TomTom was guiding me towards), and it recalculated a revised route with no problem.

7) I suspect this app is a major battery hog. I'm pretty sure I left work with a 100% battery. On the way to lunch, I charged the phone while driving. On the way back to work, I did not charge the phone. When I arrived at work, my battery is at 70% on my 3GS. The phone also gets hot when using the app, but not scalding. I'll have to double check this to make sure I had a full battery at the start of the trip.

My account is eligible for upgrade in a month or so, and I'm really thinking about grabbing a 3GS. After messing around with my friend's, the speed increase is just irresistible.

What's the best (most profitable) way to sell my 8BG 3G, which is in great condition? Or should I just wait? Are there any rumblings about when the next model will drop?

Anyone have an Incase Power Slider? I saw it at Target today for 50% off the retail price of $80. I think I'll pick one up if they still have it in a couple of weeks when it drops to $20.

I'm getting a new macbook this week and I was wondering if the migration assistant will transfer over my iPhone backup with the rest of my iTunes library? It seems like it should but I just wanted to double check just in case.

Not even touching TomTom till they release the software + cradle bundle.

The fact the cradle will charge the phone, and has a loudspeaker, and boosts the GPS signal is much needed.

I find the iPhone's GPS is a little temperamental sometimes.

I'm not full sure myself, I'm guessing it does, but what you may need to do is reauthorise iTunes for your new computer.

it will. I just moved from an imac to MBP and the backup was carried over during the migration.

I chose the option to transfer all files over, (as opposed to only my user folder) so that could be important if you are prompted.

if it doesn't ask you, it'll just copy over everything from the time machine backup or via the firewire target disk mode.

Same here. Supposedly the cradle is 200 dollars, but it includes a code to download the software.

I have it, and I swear by it!

If a little additional bulk doesn't bother you, I suspect you'll love the thing.

That's a pretty easy question to answer, considering between your posts you could have had one by now by going to the store...

Are mobileme upload speeds an embarrassment for anyone else? Like....I can't believe how bad they are. Minutes to upload kilobytes.

Where is my fucking MMS Apple & AT&T!!??

Been waiting over a freaken year
It's all on AT&T hands. They keep delaying it because they're afraid their garbage network can't handle it. MMS is working fine for other international carriers.

Does anyone know why no matter how many times I add album art to some CDs, it doesn't transfer to my iPhone? Pisses ne off to no end...

Are you using a tagging program or iTunes to add the art?

Strange. I had similar problems, but only when I used tagging programs. But you're using iTunes, so I really don't have any ideas.

New models won't be announced until next year. The best way to sell the 3G is to list it on CraigsList. And WAIT until you have the new phone. I'm about to upgrade to a 3GS and sold my (busted) 3G to help pay for it. Big mistake as the inbetween time with no iPhone is killing me :(

It's positively obnoxious. The songs are tagged in my library and show up in my iTunes library on the phone as tagged but they never show up on the phone itself.
