Quick question about unlocking. Once I've unlocked a 3G iPhone, I can still continue to use it with AT&T normally without any issues like I would had I not unlocked it right? I plan on unlocking to maybe use it overseas on vacation but would still primarily be used with AT&T back home.

Yeah it'll work perfectly.

Cool, thanks. I'm actually doing it on my wife's phone and she'd kill me if it stopped working with AT&T :D Granted she was the one who told me to jailbreak and unlock her phone....

Hey guys,

Is there any radio app that has clear channel radio stations? I tried out Wunder Radio for 6 bucks but realized Clear Channel pulled their stations from that app. I 'wunder' why they didn't have a disclaimer about it somewhere in small text.
I think that's the I Heart Radio app, but I could be wrong.

Question:

I just got an iPhone 3g which has been totally fried because the owner decided to go swimming with it (durrr). Apple says they will cover it out of warranty and for $230 (Canadian) they will give me a new one. I have to make an appointment with their Geniuses and they will sort it all out. Problem is, I don't have an active SIM card to go in it. See the phone was locked to Rogers but I am on Fido so I wanna get the phone, then unlock/jailbreak it and be on my merry way. Will they wanna activate with Rogers while I am at the store?

Anybody try one of the GPS apps?
Yeah. I use navigon and it's been pretty awesome. Used it on a road trip this past weekend and it was great.

Tom Tom is supposed to be similar quality but navigon is 30 dollars cheaper for the next week. After that they're both 100

gmap is around 20 bucks but the UI is bad. Finding POIs on it is a PITA.

I recommend navigon mainly for the price and those detailed highway exit views you can get. Very helpful

After using the TomTom app exclusively instead of my awesome stand-alone unit, I'm thoroughly happy with my purchase. It's officially replaced my stand-alone.

...and to people who worry about not being able to talk on the phone while running the app, fear not. When you get a call, answer it and then hit the home button and relaunch the app.

You can take a call and use the app at the same time, you just need to relaunch it.

10 second interruption at max.

As my stand-alone unit stopped working last week I was considering getting an iphone + tomtom package deal thingie they have going on here.

I get a lot of calls (work related, support for customers etc) while I'm driving and then it would be kinda annoying having to relaunch the TomTom app everytime.

There's no way around this?

For some reason after updating my iphone software it will not open third party applications. when i try to open them the open for a split second and then it takes me back to the home screen. Anybody have an idea how to fix this?

My jailbroken 3.0 iPhone has been pretty slow since I jailbroke it months ago. I'm thinking maybe I just need to do a reformat and jailbreak again just to see if that helps. Is 3.1 coming anytime soon or does no one know? If it's coming soon I'll wait but if it's not then I'll just do it now.

3.1 has been out.

I had ALOD, and it would take ages to reboot, if at all. When I did get it to reboot, my third party apps were non-functional as you said.

I suggest a resync (which always fixed my issue). If that doesn't work, try rebooting (I'd actually say reboot first, but I'd like to do some troubleshooting to see if you have the same issue as I did). If you get ALOD while rebooting, just keep force rebooting while plugged in (normally worked for the 3-4 try).

QUICK QUESTION:

I'm about to jailbreak my new phone (3.0.1), I already synced and made a back-up. From what I understood jailbreaking is the equivalent of a fresh install and not an upgrade (correct?). Would my contacts, messages, and the little important things that I made a back-up of be restored to the newly jailbroken phone, or will there be some sort of conflict that will get in the way of this?

Jailbreaking is not like a fresh install, you will not need to do a restore once you have jailbroken.

Wat? amazing.

Now, another question about jailbreaking: what does "Icy" do and how important is it? (using a factory unlocked 3Gs)

I've run into a problem while trying to jealbreak!

I'm running OS3.0.1 and downloaded redsn0w 0.8 and the 3.0.1 restore file from iClarified, I've followed the instructions:

- Restoring the downloaded restore file, the process was successful.
- iTunes naturally asked me to activate my phone by entering the SIM pin (I did, was I not supposed to?) activation was successful, since mine is unlocked.
- iTunes asked to either set new info for the phone or retrieve the info from the back-up/synchronized data, I did the latter (was I not supposed) the process was successful, my preferences and settings were restored.
- I closed iTunes and ran redsn0w, it asked for the restore file (that I did the restore from) and I located it... processing file... "Unable to recognize specified IPSW". WTF???

PLEASE HELP!!!

Edit: redsn0w 0.8 doesn't recognize 3.0.1 yet? ugh... that was not clarified on IFUCKINGCLARIFIED!~ RAAAGE

Edit: I did like three or four restores in the past two hours (first failed for some reason) will this fuck up my phone? or make it explode like in those reports?

I'm sorry for shitting up this thread people, bear with me :(

You have to use the 3.0 restore file when trying to jailbreak 3.0.1. You just link to the 3.0 file when you startred snow. You should just youtube this stuff and watch it being done if your worried.

ugh, yeah I've finally jailbroken the goddamn thing. It probably was the sloppiest jailbreak even done since the release of the iPhone... and now I'm getting paranoid; "is the phone slower? i feel like it's slower, no it's not... YES IT IS"

sigh, noobs.

I think my issue with apps not loading is that itunes updated my iphone to 3.0.1 so I need to revert back to 3.0. Anyone know how to do this?

I just took the plunge to 3.0.1 and jailbroke it and I don't find it slow at all. It does so many things better. There are a lot of variables though. If you have pages of icons then yeah... Winterboard does a number on the thing too.

Highly unlikely this is the cause.

Well I Can't see what else it could be, the only recent thing I've done to the phone was update to 3.0.1 so that must be it. Can you revert back to an old OS like 3.0 without deleting and restoring?

Went to New York last weekend. iPhone Maps Application + GPS = WIN. HUGE help when navigating the busses and subways. Tells you exactly what to take, when to take it and how to get there. Plus whenever I'm looking for a restaurant or something finding out where it is and how to get there is a breeze.

Hey has anyone tried, or currently using one of the many Free txt app's? I am trying to figure out a way to lower my monthly bill and I was thinking of dropping my txting plan down from 1500 to 200 a month, but wanted to know how those txt apps were?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

the texting apps work fine. The problem is that you end up with one (or more) extra "phone numbers" for your friends to deal with. Generally the rule of thumb is that the free texting apps work fine enough for users of the apps, but for the people those users are texting it's kind of annoying. especially when people use features like address books or direct calling from the texts themselves. Not trying to discourage you or down on the people who use them, but yeah... definitely not liked by the folks on the receiving end usually.

Happened to me too. Even restoring the phone didn't work. Apparently, somehow, you have lost your DRM keys. Probably. Try to load a video or other protected content.

Restoring will fix all Apple stuff (ringtones, music, videos). But I had to tell iTunes to not sync Apps anymore so it deleted them from my phone. Then I told it to sync again and iTunes reinstalled them. They worked after that. However, I lost all settings and saved games.

See to me that is annoying. I mean I would feel bad if I had to have my friends remember another phone number, just so they can send me txts..

Thanks for the heads up

So is it a good idea to be using 3.0.1 or is that a beta? Anyone know if you can revert back to 3.0 Itunes is being quite hard to figure out in this respect.

I've waited 5 weeks to get mine through Rogers online if you want an estimate.

Dude doesn't get the big picture and is just flailing because his baby isn't on the market yet.

Kudos to him for loving his work enough to get upset about this, but he needs to understand why you can't just let anyone and everyone upload anything to the app store.

They do take too damn long though. He's got some valid points. Maybe there should be a "fast track" for apps that have already been approved and are being updated for new functionality / bug fixes?

eh, he's wrong. they DO need to be submitted, if only to go over those legalities, a rating system, what have you. Music, Movies, Games, etc all have to go through a review process before hitting retail.

That being said, obviously the app store is in need of an overhaul. There is no reason that bug fixes should be held up in the queue for weeks. There also SHOULD be preferred developers whose reputations allow them to quickly move through the review process.

Apple needs to stop treating it as a moderated message board and actually treating it more like a store.

I understand this, but at the same time, you can't just 'take a developer's word for it'. This can open the doorway for malicious software to be approved in the first round, but then have something nasty put in the second.

I think the only way to have it be as ideal is to simply open it up entirely like a proper computing platform and have Apple dissolve themselves of responsibility. The user experience would decline to some extent, however, while Apple still takes the cop for any bad software.

nah... there have already been suggestions on this. Make the "fast track" a pay to play setup for developers. Instead of charging them $99/year charge a fast track dev $999/year. Setup an honor system with strikes and penalties. etc. The problem is apple started it out as a forum basically... a free for all with them as the moderator, and they have to change this. Recognize that there are actual upper tier developers, middle tier folk, and the homebrew crowd looking to make their first million on the next must-have app or make a buck on a fart app.

I think the concept of an approval process is necessary, but the current system is highly broken for as large as the store has turned out to be. Allow the upper tier of developers to moderate themselves with apple only taking the ball on legalities or ratings. This allows both highly anticipated apps and bug fixes to hit with minimal delays, and in the same turn gives apple MORE time to spend on approval for the smaller apps... the ones where a more critical eye might very well be needed to stop exploits or malware.
