I like how slim that is, and like the titanium look. I'm fine with a little less drive space, since I haven't even used up half of my 8gb. (no music or video)

I'm still holding on to
hbGLS.jpg

I just want some simple things
-update OS with fresher look and let me categorize apps on iPhone
-replace the cheap and horrible plastic back
-better battery
-front facing camera for video calls. It can be a wifi only feature, it's still awesome.

I'm sure it'll just be lame like a thinner chrome bezel, 64gbs and better camera though. Let them pull that shit and see how fast I jump to Android.

My two year contract is up on April of next year. I skipped the 3gs, so Apple better bring it good with next year's version. I love my iPhone, but I'll bail if they keep with incremental updates and another company steps up with an awesome phone.

3.1 is seriously making me consider dumping the jailbreak. I love the idea of being able to sort apps through itunes. It's not quite categories but a step in the right direction. The truth is, I also don't use 90 % of the apps on my phone so I should just take the core applications with me anyways instead of trying to carry everything possible.

Personally I think the iTunes app organization is clunkier and more frustrating than doing it from the phone. Kinda regret dropping my jailbreak.

Clunkier than the phone? :( That's almost hard to believe. I'll check some videos of it in action.

I disagree. it’s much faster to move multiple apps from one page to another and you can flip the order of pages. I prefer the new iTunes organization. that was impossible beforehand on normal FW.

I would like to have an option to create pages based on app genre but this will do for now.

Thanks, I'm assuming there really isn't any difference in the 3G connector to the 3GS. Hopefully they have a display model that I can test it on.
I have the same one and I've got a 3G. You get a warning on your iPhone saying "this device is not made for this blah blah" but it works 100% perfectly.

So it doesn't force you to go into airplane mode?

So my new 3gs isn't receiving texts and calls sometimes even though I have full bars of signal. I have to restart the phone to get old texts, voicemail, etc. Is this a normal problem or should I get a new sim card or phone? Any help would be great.

Not normal. Get that shit checked out.

Well, I've managed to completely bork my iPhone 3GS. I installed version 3.1 over my jailbroken 3.0 and now most of my apps are missing. They were in categories before and I forgot to remove them. So I tried a restore and have gone through the whole process of reinstalling everything and they are still gone. WTF? I thought a restore should get rid of this problem. They just don't appear on the springboard at all. When I go to reinstall one from the app store it says that the app is already installed.

This is fucked up!

Did you do a DFU restore and then "set up as new iPhone"?

I haven't setup as new iPhone yet. I think that is going to be my only option. It wouldn't be so bad if settings was still there but that app is gone. :(

Yeah man. "restore from backup" on a jailbroken phone probably not the best idea.

I wasn't to sure if it saved the jailbroken date in the backup that is why I thought it was safe. I'm doing a restore again but I'll setup as a new phone this time.

Anyone know if this clock/radio will work fine with the 3gs?

Thanks.

I got one of those as a parting gift from my employer awhile back. It's got good sound and does exactly what I want it to. You might need one of those plastic dock shrinker things though, because the 3G doesn't take up anywhere near the entire dock area, so sometimes it won't charge.

Just grabbed it. Works perfectly with my 3GS. No warnings at all.

EDIT: Restored my iPhone as a new phone. All my game save data - LOST. :( Oh well, better than nothing.

Damn I wonder why it gives a warning on the 3G and not the 3Gs. I just tried again thinking it might be a 3.1 change but it still gives me the annoying warning

Has anyone seen what they are speculating for the iPhone 4G?

Will support iChat
Multitasking

Of course this is just rumour but it's fun to speculate.

I would appreciate multi-tasking. Make it happen Apple

Holy shit that would literally burn through my pants after like one ring.

:( that's too bad. You might have fixed it easily by doing this:

9) If you have hidden any apps using poof, sbsettings, bossprefs or such, you should unhide them all prior to updating to avoid issues. Go to settings, enable restrictions, enter a password, then disable restrictions. That should unhide all apps you care about making you update worthy in one easy step.
edit: sorry missed the part abou the settings app also being hidden

Yeah those mock ups are complete bullshit fanboy mockups of what they want to see. That being said an OLED screen would be nice for battery life.

That silver one is the ugliest thing I've ever seen. It's a design even the PC makers wouldn't create. Not even Palm or BlackBerry would make something that ugly.

That other picture is nice though. Less wasted space is nice.

Er, they don't need a new phone for multitasking, they can do that through a software update. Plus as others have said, that image is old.
That said, if they were to implement multitasking, they'd likely lock it out of at least some older iPhone models.

Look at OS 3.0, there's several features that are either 3G/3GS or just 3GS exclusive for no particular reason but to add more perceived value to the newer phone - to get people to upgrade.

This started last night when I tried to access the app store. I'm on Rogers here in Toronto and am puzzled to why this is happening. I don't even have skype installed either. Clicking on of the categories links brings me to the featured page. I'm on 3.0 official firmware.

I do have Skype installed and the exact same thing is happening to me. Rogers in Toronto as well. I thought it had to do with me getting it off the US store with a separate account. Guess not.

Honestly, I still see no challengers. Unlike previous handset manufacturers, Apple is user driver in their focus. People really forget what an anti consumer waste land smartphones were before the iPhone. Carriers adding crap to phones. Carriers having way too much control on phone design and OSes. Carriers nickle and diming users with stuff that is now free. A lot of poeple like to hate on Apple, and that's fine, but you'd be ignorant to not be aware of their positive influence on the cell phone market today.

For a lot of people this is their first smartphone - or smartphone where they used most of the features.

Good to know I'm not alone on this. Not an issue on our end then. Will call Rogers or Apple if it continues through today.

Correct.

I also had to add a comment about incremental hardware updates - it's not like Apple are forcing you to upgrade hardware every single year. I don't even get why the hardware updates is something that is even remotely related to the operation of your current phone. You chose the iPhone for a reason, and those reasons will not have changed with each update.

Buying a new phone on a yearly, or even every two years, basis is still a foreign thing for most people. For some reason, that is different with the iPhone. People think they want or need the new version each year, and they forget about a phone subsidy and the way the phone market usually works.

TUAW reported about this. Something screwy is going on with the Canadian App Store.

For guys with a 3GS: Any idea how I can delete a section of video?

I know how to Trim, but it only lets me select one section, and I can only save it, not trash it from the rest of the video...

You can't. Editing on the iPhone is limited to trimming the ends of the video. If you wanted to delete a middle section you'd need to get the video into something like iMovie.

Or you could trim it into two videos. Trim down to the first part and save that. Then trim down to the second part and save that. Send both videos to where you want them to go.

No, that's not it for me at all. My two year is up next year, and I want Apple to step its game up. Whatever happens, I'll look at all my options, and as of right now no one is even close, plus the fact that I have paid apps. But still, let's see where the phone market is next year, and what Apple offers. I don't see too many scenarios where I WON'T be an iPhone owner next year, but I'm certainly going to keep my options open.
