hmm okey well I will be in New Zealand so I do not want my phone to be able to call to.. so I guess I can just not unlock the phone when I switch it off and that will still let me send and recieve GPS coordinates

What do you mean by not unlock the phone when you switch it off?

If the phone is off, it won't do anything, let alone receive GPS.

You could always just take the sim card out if you don't want to receive calls (or make calls).

You can always just pop out the sim and keep it in a safe place, gps should still work then but obviously nothing else will.

edit: Beaten :(

I've had the shut down bug happen, it scared the SHIT out of me.

I had full battery power and I sent a text, stuck my phone in my pocket, and started watching a movie. 30-40 minutes later, I take out my phone, and it's OFF. Not normal off, like, DEAD off. Holding the buttons did NOTHING. I plugged it into a PC, a Macbook, the wall, my car, and my iMac, and got NOTHING. I left it plugged into the iMac overnight, and in the morning I tried one last time and it booted up, but it took at LONG time to do it. It's been fine since.... I hope. That is a fucking HUGE bug.

well I meant that you switch your phone off, turn it on and when you turn your phone on a popup arrives asking you to unlock the sim, I can chooose not to unlock it but then I have no network in the status bar but I guess the GPS would still work no?

or I could pop the Simcard out :)

This is correct. No need to remove the sim from the phone if you don't unlock it on startup. And the GPS should still work.

thanks!

now I just need to know if I should go with a
TOMTOM or a navicon GPS.. I need to know what will work best on a 3G iPhone and I need to know if I can update to any map I want, I need the NZ map...

TomTom sells different versions of their app with different map packs. For example you can buy the app with whole Western-Europe maps or just the Benelux maps. For New Zealand there is a New Zealand version here: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=326148055&mt=8

As for using Navigon or TomTom, I don't really know specific differences but both have been getting good reviews.

you don't have to make calls, but wouldn't you want to be contactable? Those calls should be free to you, just warn anyone who is likely to call you that their calls might be a bit expensive.

And you should be able to turn off data connectivity separately from phone calls - right?

since we're talking about GPS. I'll just add that navigon upped the game by adding text to speech in the latest update to their app. tested it it out, works really well. tom tom doesn't have that yet on the iphone.

navigon will have an in-app purchase down the line for traffic info. one time fee of 20 bucks. i'm not sure if that's worth it to me but it could be for some folks.

again, tom tom hasn't said if they will offer traffic for free or as a paid upgrade either.

currently, i think navigon edges out tom tom due to the text to speech update and the slightly lower pricetag. but with new updates, that could always change in a month or so.

Not sure what carrier he has, but with Rogers in Canada, if anyone calls me when I'm abroad it's very expensive for me to answer them, especially if I'm not in the US. That being said, if I ignore the call and don't pick it up, I don't think I get charged anything.

I've never seen that popup - is that for locked phones? Jailbroken phones?

Can you purchase iphones in the US without a contract, as in handset only? If this is possible, where or who is the best/cheapest retailer...

Apple allowed Best Buy to shortly before the 3GS came out, but I'm not sure if they changed that rule. I haven't been notified of it so I'd still sell them without a contract. Expensive as hell though and no local retailer is going to be cheaper than the other on any Apple product so it doesn't really matter where you go. Apple prices are locked by Apple for any legit retailers.

I bought the phone without a contract a Best Buy on launch day for the 3GS.

$700.

I was curious if you unlocked an iPhone format eh US, does it remain unlocked? can you upgrade firmware completely fine? Or do you have to remain jail broken?
Basically, I would be interested in an unlocked phone, but to not leave it jailbroken.

Also, isn't it cheaper to buy the phone on contract for, say $199, pay the first month bills, $100, and then break the contract paying the $175 fee?

having gotten my MMS activated (updated carrier file - no jailbreak), my buddy sent me a video he shot on his 3gs to my 3g. i was able to save the video to my camera roll and then edit/trim it as well. can't shoot video, but i can edit it once i get it on my phone. sweet.

edit: i can't send videos, though. i dont have the little button in the bottom right to email/youtube/mms in the camera roll on videos, when in messages i click the camera, chose existing, only the photos show up, and then if i copy a video from a text message and paste it, all i get is the file name.

what an arbitrary limitation, especially since i'm allowed to receive and then edit/trim them.

Umm, someone calling a local number isn't going to get charged more just because that local number phone happens to be in a different country. It's all on the person traveling.

Or is he getting a local New Zealand SIM?

I thought it did. That's what roaming is all about - a carrier has an agreement with another carrier to connect their calls. The roaming charge between these companies is what you pay for when in another country.

So here's the games i've tried and what I think of them
Alive4ever - just ok. I haven't tried Wi-Fi multiplayer which I assume is the main draw here
Inkvaders - very repetitive shooter, interesting graphics.
Civ Rev - Haven't really felt like playing this, despite it being Civ it hasn't captured my attention like others
F.A.S.T - awesome flight sim, the new update makes the game much more fun and difficult.
Real Racing - the best racing game i've played in awhile
FlightControl - everybody pretty much knows how great this game is
Madden NFL - It's football. not really great football but football nonetheless
Mr. AahH!!! - this game is fucking great. I spend tons of time playing this, probably #2 best iphone game for me
Hold'Em - Apple's hold'em game is alright in landscape mode, not great.
Boxed In - boring
Geo Defense Swarm - tower defense with geometry wars graphics BEST GAME EVAR #1 despite some crashing and glitches I can't put this game down.

Alright, I'm having one hell of a time here... I downloaded an update earlier and it never started downloading,
it just stuck at loading.... I've turned off/reset my phone a dozen times, and I can't fucking figure out how to get rid of it..

Can't you delete the app, update through iTunes and then sync it with the iPhone?

The only problem with that would be that you'll lose the app's savedata.

Do they replace iphones with cracked glass?

I've read that some people get replacements by just walking into Apple stores and asking nicely. I had to buy a whole new screen (when I was on holiday in Bangkok). Cost me about $100USD.

At school I get pretty horrible signal, while my friend gets near perfect symbol. We both have iPhone 3G's. In fact, I notice that I get bad signal in a lot of places I used to get good signal. Is this a common problem?

If it's under warrenty still.

No, once you upgrade firmware, it's the process of re-jailbreaking & unlocking if you want. Basically if you want to Jailbreak a newer FW's, you need to first upgrade to the current firmware, then run the program from your computer that can jailbreak and unlock, just jailbreak, or just unlock.

Is it unlocked? Then yeah it's a common problem because it changes basebands.

Nope. But I've jailbroken it twice, and unjailbroken it twice. Could that have caused the problems? Any way to fix?

Well it could've. With a jailbroken phone I would sometimes lose bars in certain places, but never get 'no service'. I'm on AT&T also and it happens to me also. It's a common problem regardless. No fix yet, I just don't think the devs see it as a big deal or something..

Nope, cracked glass is "accidental damage" and is not covered. It could even be a way to void your warranty as Apple may attribute any other malfunction to the damage that caused your cracked glass...

It's only worth it if you treat your stuff worse than the average insured-phone user. Of course, theft is also covered but unless you live in a really crappy neighbourhood that's also not really necessary IMO.
No...

It's just annoying. Sometimes people send me texts and I don't get them for a few hours (when I'm at school). I get pretty good signal at home though and usually around my neighborhood. Where I live there is a lot of hills so getting good signal is even harder with this "bug."

Is there any disadvantage to using the iPhone a lot while it's plugged in and charging, even if it's fully charged? For instance, if I want to use it in my car as an iPod fairly often and have it plugged into a car charger whenever I'm out driving, will that cause the battery to wear our or die faster or anything like that?

I wouldn't think it would be greatly detrimental. I would think the lithium battery is pretty much like most modern lithium batteries. Use them however you wish, but do occasionally use the battery to keep things flowing, and definitely drain it right down every couple of months to keep it calibrated. Don't leave it stored for weeks on end at full or empty charge.

I'm pretty sure because it changes the baseband, everything fucks up. That can be the only reason I see since it's the only thing that affects the phone in order for the jailbreak to work..

Nope, it wouldn't be fair to charge the caller just because the person they call isn't in their local network, its all on the person who is actually roaming.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood. Yeah, it shouldn't cost the home caller more.

This message has started popping up on my 3GS this afternoon.

I haven't ever plugged any hardware apart from a set of headphones into it. It's just sitting on my desk, with this message popping up every few minutes. I upgraded to 3.1 last week without incident, and this just started about half an hour ago. I've turned it off and back on a couple times and this pops up as soon as it's back on. Any ideas what's up?

Zesty, the only time I've seen that message was after a phone was dropped or after water damage. Usually not a good sign.

That warning is annoying as hell, it happens to me every now and then when I plug the iPhone to a dock, an iPod stereo or a car kit.

All those things connect to the 30 pin connector though, so I'd recommend you to check it for something stuck in there, I don't know. Blow it like a NES cartridge, reboot it, etc.

Yeah, try blowing on it. AFter the 3G came out, there was a certification for third party hardware to make it 'made for iPhone', and a bunch of older things stopped some functionality (mostly charging on the firewire spec).

Upgraded to the new Firmware last night, completely killed the battery life on my 3GS. Lame, was hoping the bug wasn't going to effect me. Normally would be at 85% battery life this time of day, was at 30%. Ouch. Hope they fix this soon.

Check your usage. If it is countin usage while sleeping then you have a rogue process.

Just thought I'd balance out my overall negativity of the iTunes 9 and iPhone 3.1updates with something positive.

Since 3.1 was installed on my 3g, I have noticed much smoother operation in general. Since 3.0, my phone was a bit laggy. Closing an app would feel unresponsive - fir example, when you hit the home button the current app is suppose to shrink and the home screen fades in. But on 3.0 it kind of lagged and just pooped in. Same with scrolling from page to page would often jerk over. On 3.1 this has been improved a lot. I still get pauses when loading up pages, such as opening the iPod app would hold on a blank page for a few seconds, but I guess that's just the way 3.1 accesses the library now. Also, typing feels prett responsive, like back to 2.2 levels.

Just thought I'd post that my experience with 3.1 isn't all negative.

I get that message when I plug my iPhone into my cars iPod port. But it still works, just doesn't charge.

I get that message when I dock my iPhone into this Sony clock radio I have. I just ignore it and everything works (including charging). Have no idea if I'm able to fix that.

I know what you mean. :lol. I don't think they should change it, though, because the algorithm for typing correction is based on incorrect typing (not spelling). Since for ..... holy CRAP. I just tried to type fir and it corrected it to FOR. NOW IVE SEEN EVERYTHING.

Any way what I was trying to say was that since fir is a correct word, no need to change it.

I need to keep trying the fir thing now. Nope can't get to correct to for. Fir fir fir fir. Weird, because I SAW it as fit ... what?! Now it changed to fit!!!!

Fit fit fir fur fir fir fir fir fir fir fit fir fit fir fir fit fir fir fit fir fir fir.

These were all firs. I don't get it.
