Posting from your iPhone? the fir/for thing drives me INSANE when typing. When do I ever type fir? NEVER. When do I type for? ALWAYS. If I type an f and my next letter is an I, please assume it is an O instead.

OMG, Thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis.

who thought that fir was used more often than for? i always make a point now to type fpr so that i can get the for that i want.

I like how it's adaptive. For example, names, abbreviations, and spanish words I use often get added in without me having to add them, so it might try to correct it the first few times, but then after a while it will know what I'm trying to type and leave it alone. But yeah, some of the corrections piss me off.

Now that I think about it, I have been making a lot note typos than I used to. Maybe I'm jet leaning how to make typos on an iPhone, but I'm starting to thunk the algorithm has changed somewhat.

Fir fir fit fit fit fit fit fit fit fit fit fit fit it fit fir fit fit fit fit fit fir fir fir fir for for fir for fir

These were all firs.

Right - that happens with certain accessories. But he was saying it was random.

That warning is annoying as hell, it happens to me every now and then when I plug the iPhone to a dock, an iPod stereo or a car kit.

All those things connect to the 30 pin connector though, so I'd recommend you to check it for something stuck in there, I don't know. Blow it like a NES cartridge, reboot it, etc.

This. Happened to my wife's phone once (she was getting random warnings when the phone wasn't connected to anything) and it turned out to be a little scrap of paper or something stuck in the dock connector.

Upgraded to the new Firmware last night, completely killed the battery life on my 3GS. Lame, was hoping the bug wasn't going to effect me. Normally would be at 85% battery life this time of day, was at 30%. Ouch. Hope they fix this soon.

My battery life is fine on 3.1 with Exchange push, wifi, BT, location services all enabled - I take it off the charger first thing in the morning and I'm usually around 75% by the end of the work day. It took a huge nosedive when I enabled MobileMe calendar push to check out the new subscription calendar feature, though - I'd be lucky to be 25-30% by 5 pm. Disabled MM calendars (I keep MM mail set to fetch manually), and battery life went right back to normal. While I'd expect some kind of hit to battery life with both Exchange and MobileMe push on, 2x seems fairly excessive. Maybe they have some kind of problem with the heartbeat interval for MobileMe push or something.

I don't use Mobile me and the only push I am using is one Exchange account that isn't overly active. No new apps or anything have been installed since the upgrade. The battery life is significantly shorter. How do I check for a rogue process and usage? I head other people are having this problem on Giz.

You want one of these.

I use one with a new Nano and my dealer-installed Nissan iPod Adapter, and it works just great.

Start off with checking your usage time (set it to zero if you have to):

Settings -> General -> usage.

Note it down, then sleep your phone. Check again in, say 30 minutes. It should be the same as before. If it says 30 minutes usage, then something is running while asleep, and it shouldn't be (at least it was like this on 3.0). When I was first playing around with push notifications, I noticed that push would run constantly in the background, reducing my usage from standby of several days down to about 7 hours - that is, it just ran the thing solid.

Who knows if this is your problem or not, but if you're not using push, then sleep should count as no usage.

If you have iStat, the new version, while removing free memory, actually allows you to monitor active processes.

edit: I notice you are using exchange. Is this necessary? Try turning it off (remember to reboot the phone - otherwise the process actually continues to run in my experience). If you get usage while asleep with it on, but don't while it's off, you can try turning it off for a day to see if that makes a difference. Also push on email.

I'd follow mrkgoo's recommendations above, especially re: Exchange push. Another thing some people have reported success with - run the phone through a couple of full discharge cycles. Let it get down to 10% or less and then do an uninterrupted charge cycle to 100%, and repeat. That'll usually reset your battery meter calibration if it's gone wonky for some reason.

Aight, thanks for the tips. I will give them a try. Never had problem with push effecting my battery life prior to this update. Hopefully it is just the battery calibration. I prefer to have push on for work.

For sure. Just letting you know my experence to help you troubleshoot and figure out the potential issue so you can better decide what to do about it.

Just Weather, Clock and Calendar at the top. The icons in the dock are springjumps to the other pages (it's how I organize my apps)
Wow, how exactly did you set all that up? i love how clean it looks. Where are the icons from? How did you get the SMS icon on the status bar like that?

Wow, that's actually pretty neat to know, not for my iPhone, but more likely because I'm still using my 5G iPod in my car's Pioneer deck, but was worried about moving to the current generation because I need it to charge (that iPod never leaves the car, I used to have an 80GB 5.5G, but that one was stolen).

My iPhone always corrects 'the' into 'THE'. What the hell? Who would ever write THE in caps. And it's not an abbreviation as far as I know.

I get that message when I dock my iPhone into this Sony clock radio I have. I just ignore it and everything works (including charging). Have no idea if I'm able to fix that.

I had that after I replaced the battery on the clock. Unplugged it once and then the problem went away.

Every once in awhile I get the message while plugged into the 3G dock, but sync overrides after a few seconds.

that’s ridiculous. but it sounds like a problem that can be fixed by resetting the dictionary autocorrect learnings in settings.

Where can I do that? I can only turn-off auto-correction entirely by going to settings->general->keypad, but that's obviously not what I want....

Settings -> General -> REset Settings -> Reset Keyboard Dictionary.

Whenever I have a missed call/voicemail, the blue notification box that shows on my standby screen has text that's justified kinda funny, like their icon should be there, but isn't. I guess those missed notifications don't show the icon?

Thanks to everyone for the help earlier with my weird pop-up error message. I ended up scraping a kind of large piece of semi-damp lint out of the connector area and it stopped shortly thereafter.

Damn son, wash your clothes and throw them in a dryer once in awhile!

I kid, I kid.

That's great! So we can add semi-damp lint to the list of unsupported accessories.

How to set up the dock and where the icons are from. The extra icons in the status bar are notifications placed by 'Notifier' or 'Status Notifier', available in Cydia (or did you mean the SMS notifier specifically?) Er, that should be all you need to set it up unless you want exactly what I have.

Anyone in the US have their SMS work earlier than the launch date? I'm praying my local AT&T will enable my account soonish. I'm getting antsy. I have a whole score of goat.se pictures to send people the minute it goes live. Coooome on AT&T!

AT&T announced the MMS nationwide release for September 25th although they might have enabled it for your account already. It doesn't have anything to do with OS 3.1 (Apple added it in 3.0).

GodfatherX said:
isnt a software update required for that?

Nope. Some people have the purely legit version without doing anything. It's being turned on a little bit at a time... I'm so impatient. I need it NOW!

Why'd you quote me? I knew that.

GAH!!! PLEASE HELP!

I downloaded and installed 3.1 this morning onto my 3G. I then load some new podcasts onto the phone, and begin listening to them. About 30 minutes later my iPhone turns off all the sudden, and now I can't turn it back on. It does nothing when I plug it in to either the wall or my laptop. WTF?!

It's an issue with 3.1. It hasn't happened to me yet, but it has to other users in this thread. Start reading a couple pages back:

Can you just upload your Theme folder through SSH somewhere? I'd like to see it. Thanks.

Press Home + Lock buttons for a while, it should do the trick.

Found my own turned off this morning for no reason, did that and it rebooted, didn't even ask me for the PIN code. Funny thing was, its battery was on 35% more or less and I believe it was like on the 80's/90's before that happened.

3.1 is fucked up :|

Yup, 3.1 is a bit screwy in this regard.

IT happened to be twice in succession a week ago. Haven't ever had it before or since, so it's intermittent.

There's a large thread on Macrumors (search 3.1 and unresponsive). Hold home and lock until it reboots.

The issue with me is that I can't reboot effectively on 3.1 - Apple Logo of Death came back for me on 3.1.

OK the following tweaks are pertinent to my homepage setup and should be installed to replicate it:
8-icon dock (to put 8 icons in the dock, duh. Not on cydia; see here)
FiveIRows GUI (For Five rows of icons on each Springboard page. May be replaced with 7x7Springboard if so inclined*)
Five-Column Springboard (adds a fifth column to Springboard. Again, may be replaced with 7x7Springboard if so inclined
Springjumps (for the page links in the dock)
iBlank (to create blank icons. Helps in arranging icons on Springboard as you'll see below)
BlankNull (so the blank icons created by iBlank don't link to anything)
LiveClock (for time information in the clock icon. Similar to the default behavior of Apple's Calendar app)
WeatherIcon (for weather informationt in the weather icon-or any weather app's icon of your choosing. Similar to the default behavior of Apple's Calendar app).
Mattte Nano Weather (for particular weather icons I'm using to display the different conditions)

MyHybrid.theme. It includes:
the Wallpaper. Actually I use BossPaper to rotate all the Tea Time-Lapse wallpapers but I've included the one from the original screenshot.
the Dock and StatusBar. Both cribbed from the ThirtyTwo theme
the Page Jump icons.
a mask for the weather icon to remove the background.
a liveclock [blank] icon and preferences list.
info preferences list to change Springboard calender icon color and font size...
As you can see it's not really a theme, just bits and pieces from here and there. Most probably the liveclock tweak is the only original mod.

Ok, despite my long-winded explanation, setup is now very simple:
  1. Install all the required tweaks--all should be available on Cydia except when noted. Open iBlank and create one blank icon (two if you're using 7x7). Open SpringJumps and make sure Page 0 - Page 7 are good to go. Arrange like this:

    mj8t45.png

  2. Put MyHybrid in the Themes folder. Go to Winterboard and arrange like this:

    s4tich.png

  3. Close Winterboard/Respring to get this:

So I just got my new 3GS :D. And I'm wondering, how do I make sure it's only using the local Wi-Fi connection when I'm visiting the appstore and whatnot. Don't want any internet bills when I can just use wifi.

Do I need to Jailbreak it first to access those options or am I just blind?

Settings > General > Network > Enable 3G on/off.

If you have an available wifi, and it's connected, it should prioritise wifi over 3G. Just set up the connection to your wifi. Home wifi?

Settings > General > Network > Enable 3G on/off.

This doesn't enable wife, however. This just disables 3G, and the phone will drop to an edge connection, still possibly using data.

Easy_D, where are you? Do you have a data plan?

Anyway, Settings -> Wireless-> try connecting to available wifi. When connected to wifi, it should show a wifi signal inlace of the 3G or EDGE.

See that logo next to AT&T? That's how you know you're connected to a wi-fi network.

You just have to enable wi-fi and everytime it detects a known network, it will connect to it.

Look at the top left. If it says 3G you're not on wifi. :P

I've tried on my ipod touch, works awesome but I don't like how send email with my real name (real name + surname on my google account).

I'll stick with imap

That's not really any better than just pulling it though.
