I guess it's getting hammered at the moment because Push email shouldn't be taking "a few minutes" it should be instant.

I'll try it out in a few hours when (hopefully) the kinks are worked out. Probably will destroy my battery though.

yeah I think I'm gonna try it out later on tonight.

Prolly right. I can finally get my email and calendars. Not loving the push so far. Still waiting minutes after sending an email.

See that logo next to AT&T? That's how you know you're connected to a wi-fi network.

You just have to enable wi-fi and everytime it detects a known network, it will connect to it.
Oh, that's what I thought, just wasn't sure. Thanks.

OK the following tweaks are pertinent to my homepage setup and should be installed to replicate it:
8-icon dock (to put 8 icons in the dock, duh. Not on cydia; see here)
FiveIRows GUI (For Five rows of icons on each Springboard page. May be replaced with 7x7Springboard if so inclined*)
Five-Column Springboard (adds a fifth column to Springboard. Again, may be replaced with 7x7Springboard if so inclined
Springjumps (for the page links in the dock)
iBlank (to create blank icons. Helps in arranging icons on Springboard as you'll see below)
BlankNull (so the blank icons created by iBlank don't link to anything)
LiveClock (for time information in the clock icon. Similar to the default behavior of Apple's Calendar app)
WeatherIcon (for weather informationt in the weather icon-or any weather app's icon of your choosing. Similar to the default behavior of Apple's Calendar app).
Mattte Nano Weather (for particular weather icons I'm using to display the different conditions)

MyHybrid.theme. It includes:
the Wallpaper. Actually I use BossPaper to rotate all the Tea Time-Lapse wallpapers but I've included the one from the original screenshot.
the Dock and StatusBar. Both cribbed from the ThirtyTwo theme
the Page Jump icons.
a mask for the weather icon to remove the background.
a liveclock [blank] icon and preferences list.
info preferences list to change Springboard calender icon color and font size...
As you can see it's not really a theme, just bits and pieces from here and there. Most probably the liveclock tweak is the only original mod.

Ok, despite my long-winded explanation, setup is now very simple:
  1. Install all the required tweaks--all should be available on Cydia except when noted. Open iBlank and create one blank icon (two if you're using 7x7). Open SpringJumps and make sure Page 0 - Page 7 are good to go. Arrange like this:

    mj8t45.png

  2. Put MyHybrid in the Themes folder. Go to Winterboard and arrange like this:

    s4tich.png

  3. Close Winterboard/Respring to get this:

Thanks for taking the time to go into detail. Did you figure this all out by yourself?

Just did five consecutive incoming push tests:

Seconds from when outlook says message sent:
54
42
17
39
56

It loaded the (short) messages OK too. Still having issues deleting and then loading [All Mail]. (I think that's where they go on delete)

So I just got my new 3GS :D. And I'm wondering, how do I make sure it's only using the local Wi-Fi connection when I'm visiting the appstore and whatnot. Don't want any internet bills when I can just use wifi.

Do I need to Jailbreak it first to access those options or am I just blind?
Are you trying to not use the 3G/Edge connection at all? In addition to what everyone else wrote you can choose to turn on Airplane mode and then turn on WiFi.

:lol where did you find that?! That's one ancient screen shot.

Hell no! :lol I'm really lazy with this stuff. Mine is very similar in premise to Lauro's Home eries for one--I just pick up ideas as I go along:

In fact, now that Bosspaper can coexist with Winterboard's wallpapers, I'll be incorporating more elements from those themes. The only tweak I might say I figured out on my own is how to display both analogue and digital displays in a liveclock icon (and it wasn't that hard)

If you asking how I 'figured out themes' (or whatever), Hack that iPhone's Winterboard guide is a useful resource

I stuck some videos on my iPod, can I now delete them from my hard drive and they will stay on the iPod when I sync? I already have the episodes and had to reconvert them for iPod, I just don't want two of every episode wasting my PC hard drive space..

Not entirely sure, but if you select manually manage songs and video, then there is no sync for content, and it all works by drag and drop.

That's not an ideal solution, however.

sweet, can finally delete Gpush - you served me well.

I was thinking of doing this but what I like about it (and the slightly superior gphush) is that the notification pops up with the subject name and sender of the email so I know who emailed me about what when it sends the notice.

the mail app doesn’t do that. it just makes a noise and that’s it. I still have to open the app to see what the email is about.

am I crazy enough to use Dual Pushing gmail solutions

you betcha!

you asked for the launch date of SMS and the two replies were even further off-base so... well, you know how that goes :p

Wait, what? No I didn't. I know it's this Friday. I was asking if anyone has had theirs work earlier, as reports have said. I haven't and no one in my area has yet, but I wanted to see if anyone on GAF was ever so lucky. The others... well, I can't account for what they were saying.

This doesn't enable wife, however. This just disables 3G, and the phone will drop to an edge connection, still possibly using data.

Hmm... 3G or wife... 3G or wife... which do I want?

I would have stuck to gpush if the Badge indicator in the app updated immediately upon marking something 'read'.. Since it doesn't, I'll just ditch it... If you have a lockscreen app like lockscreen info or intelliscreen, you can see the email contents there.

gotta see how this new netnewswire compares to Byline now.

edit: GODDAMN, that is a bigass ad on the top of the NNW screen. :lol

yeah…. think I might go back to byline. that ad is the height of 2 articles

I just played around with the free edition now, and I like the look and feel of the app more than Byline, even with the big ad. Actually, the ad wasn't a big deal to me, cause at least it isn't stuck at the top of the screen, it goes away when you scroll down the list.

edit: Wow, late night stupidity struck me.

After setting up Google sync on the iPhone, I can say it works very well with push gmail. Very pleased.

Other than that, it's a shame that it won't sync all google calendars, only the main one. Luckily I kept my old settings with one calendar account per calendar.

I'd like to sync contacts too but since gmail automatically adds contacts to the contact list, I think that would just fill my iPhone contacts with litter.

edit: whoops, spoke too soon regarding the calendars issue.

Google Sync allows you to choose up to 25 Calendars with the Calendar app on your iPhone (on iPhone OS 3.0)
To select which calendars to sync to your iPhone, follow the steps below:

Open the Safari browser on your phone and go to http://m.google.com/sync.
Sign in with your account and select your phone from the list of devices you've set up for Google Sync.
Bookmark this page so you can return to it easily.

Mail also has Exchange support in Snow Leopard, doesn't it? Wouldn't that accomplish the same thing?
You would think, but I was looking into this before. Apparently, snow leopard implemented support for exchange web services, while google sync uses the activesync protocol instead (which the iPhone uses, but not snow leopard)

I was looking to upgrade my ATT account/phone to an iphone yesterday, but it's $400. Fail.

:(

You shouldn't have wasted your upgrade eligibility on the "free" phone you're using now! (Total, unsupported wild guess)

Pardon me if this has been asked, but:

I just went from a 5G iPod to a new touch, and I no longer see my iPod mounted as a filesystem like I used to (which is fine). Does this mean that various tools like Senuti and Yamipod do not work? What such tools do exist?

edit: oops, thought I was in a generic iPod thread, not the iPhone thread. May still apply, I guess.

Senuti works as well as various other tools made to handle the iPhone OS

Yeah I set this up last night, unfortunately it seems that the new sports calendars are not syncing. Which sucks. :-/

This is also why my iPhone can get a real connection to my office's Exchange 2003 servers while my MacBook cannot. Exchange support on OS X is limited to Exchange 2007 because it's not using ActiveSync :(

So has anyone tried out the augmented reality apps from acrossair? I've download the nearest tube station app and although it's quite sensitive, it's pretty cool to get a first look at where this tech is going.

It'll be a lot cooler when it can decipher what is actually on your screen and overlay precise directions.

I am going on holiday next week and I don't want to get owned by roaming charges whilst I am there (from emails coming in etc).

What things do I need to turn off on the iPhone? I thought I had turned everything off (Roaming, Manual email fetching, 3G off) but when I go into email again the swirly thing appears on the top of the screen as it tries to grab any emails.

What things should I turn off so I absolutely wont get any roaming charges from email fetching etc?

Thanks!

Airplane mode?

I'm desperately awaiting the NYC version. Was supposed to come out with 3.1. I can only imagine they did some last minute changes when 3.1 launched and sent it in for approval.

Roaming should be set off by default, but i would make sure push notifications are set to off, also.

Google sync question here.

I deleted all my google contacts and activated the "contacts" option on the g sync account on the iPhone.

Asked to kept the local contacts, which it did, but the "google" contact list is empty. How can I copy the local contact list to google contacts?

edit: I think I solved it, sort of.

edit: it won't sync anniversaries or pictures? weak dude

So on my itouch when I go to watch my office seasons Videos-->TV Shows it doesn't organize by season like my old ipod used to but just seems to be a random organization of episodes. What am I DOING IT WRONG?

I believe I am using a $50 refurb phone, but it may have been a free refurb phone. My att account is only like 6 months old.

I just sync my contacts with google through iTunes. I mean how often are you updating your contact list that you need to keep it on a live sync with Google? I can understand calendar, but contacts doesn't cut it.
