My bet is a YouTube app. Here's a quote from Jobs directly after the MacWorld keynote when asked if you'll be able to use YouTube (the flash player on their website) on the iPhone:

Markoff: “What about YouTube–”

Jobs: “Yeah, YouTube—of course. But you don’t need to have Flash to show YouTube. All you need to do is deal with YouTube. And plus, we could get ‘em to up their video resolution at the same time, by using h.264 instead of the old codec.

youtube already works like that on the N95. Youtube has either an RSS feed or a mobile web page with streaming MP4 (don't know if its h264 or vanilla).

BTW, how does the battery work? Is it confirmed to be separated for music/everything else?

considering the big screen, surely many people will use it for video. If so, you're just wasting that extra battery which could give you more playtime.

OK, I really had no interest in this thing (despite the barrage of commercials), but for some reason, I'm starting to come around. The thought of eBaying my 5th gen iPod just crossed my mind.

2 questions:

1) Does this thing have a speaker so you can play music without headphones?

2) I convert videos (movies, tv shows, etc) to mp4 format so I can watch them on my television screen via my iPod (with a standard video cord that I got from Radio Shack). Will I still be able to watch movies like this with an iPhone?

EDIT: Nevermind :lol I see that it's only 4GB/8GB. I have too much music/video space to completely ditch my iPod.

EDIT #2: I'm not COMPLETELY out of the game yet, so I still pose those questions.
:lol I was going to do the same thing. But then I realized there is no way I'm giving up my 8k songs which don't even fit on my 30GB Ipod now.

I'm going to buy the Iphone and just use my current Ipod(or sell it and get a 60GB) and just keep the Ipod in my car(which I'll always keep in there hooked up for music) So my Iphone will be the music device I always carry around with me since it's a phone but the Ipod will always be in my car jammin Tribe or used in Plane rides, long ass car rides, ect.

Answers to your questions:

1)Yes, has a speaker to listen out loud
2)Not to sure but I'm sure they'll make those for Iphone if it doesn't work.

I doubt it'll just pluck an access point out of thin air and connect without consulting the user first.
so long as the hotspot isn't protected, it'll do just that.

if you're in a WiFi hot spot, and it's unprotected, or you've already logged into it, it'll automatically connect, no questions asked, behind the scenes.

as far as the edge stuff goes, i would imagine that at&t is gonna have to offer a flat monthly rate for internet usage. there's no way they're gonna get away with by the minute shit considering how often the phone will be used to go online.

Thanks for the answers.

I think the space thing is going to be a real problem for me. According to iTunes, I've already used 15.09GB of video space (118 videos) and 3.84GB of audio space (695 song/audio files).

I should just be practical and resist the temptation to shell out $600 for this thing. I could easily pay for it with my summer job, but the reality is that I just don't need it. If the storage space was 30GB, then I would probably be sold.

Besides, I've already made a financial reservation for Halo 3 + Xbox 360. :)

the space is always gonna be the biggest issue with me. it won't be any kind of ipod replacement anytime soon for me. i'll definitely use the 8 gigs for video though. that's still pretty adequate.

more than 2 megapixels for a camera would've been awesome as well. once you hit 3, then it becomes good enough to be able to print shit.

good thing all these things will be fixed next year. no super long wait.

as far as the ultimate wishlist feature goes though....

i desperately want iChat on there with all its video chat glory. when you have video chat in your hand, it's gonna make the turtlecom look like a joke.

I want to ask a Q that might have already been answered in this thread, but I'm too lazy to go through all the pages :P

I don't live in the US can I buy an iPhone?

If that's true, it's an immensely stupid design decision. I don't want my phone ever crawling onto some jackass's WiFi connection without telling me, especially given how easy it is to sniff packets.

I have a strong feeling that it'll only connect to pre-approved, white-listed ones while asking about ones it just happens to find.

Yes, but the dates for outside US releases aren't set yet. Expect holiday season 2007 or something like that.

If it's unlocked, then yes. But the iPhones are being tied to AT&T, so you'd need to find an unlocking service.

I've got over 70 full length movies (I ripped all my DVDs) but I plan on only keeping one movie on my iPhone at a time along with one TV episode. That should be enough video for me. When I get tired of that movie, I'll just swap it with another. iTunes lets you specify these kinds of things easily.

I've got 5GB of music (and music videos). Add around 800MB for a full movie and 300MB for a TV episode, that leaves me with just around a spare GB of space to play with in case I need it.

and to buy from AT&T I have to be an american?

and how likely or easy can this thing be unlocked?

How do you know this? What if you elect to buy an iPhone with out a data plan? We have no idea what their voice and data plans are yet for the iPhone.

Besides, you can wander out of an area covered by Edge, and you won't be connected.

Pretty much, they'll only sell you service if they can actually provide it to you. As for ease of unlocking? While U.S. copyright law specifies that users be allowed to do it, that doesn't mean companies have to make it easy. But there are plenty of places that do it, I'd give the iPhone some time, though. It's not like they'll be ready to unlock these things on day 1.

It'll probably fall back to GPRS.

I'm sure it will prompt first before ocnnecting to a brand new access point. The iPhone uses WiFi where available because it is faster according to some early statements.

Do we have pretty much universal GPRS coverage now? I'm asking as a legitimate question. So, if the iPhone is able to be on AT&T's network, I'll always have some sort of data service? I remember in years past that you might have voice, but not data, so you would lose your Internet connection, e-mail, IM, etc. I wasn't aware that data was available where ever voice was these days.

I'll be overseas soon, I'm thinking about buying the iPhone as a PDA with media capability. Will I be able to connect to wi-fi and use the internet abroad?

I don't see why not. Just don't expect to use the cell phone portion of the EDGE reception anywhere over seas. It seems like you could find cheaper options though if you just wanted a PDA.

Here's a photo of the iPhone out in public. This was taken on the CalTrain which many Apple employees use to commute from San Francisco to Cupertino. The guy who snapped this photo had dropped his Treo and reached down to pick it up when he saw this guy holding an iPhone so he snapped a photo. He says the guy was just flipping through songs and playing back music.

I ride that ****ing CalTrain every single day. I wish I was the one who saw this guy. :( (He looks cute, too.)

Is the iPhone the most hyped consumer product of all time? The noise coming from all four corners is deafening.

Is it just me or did everything seem a lot more hyped when you were a kid?
i dunno man, i mean, that could very well be the case, but even my much older brother, and his friends, who weren't gamers, crowded around Mario 64 for a week.

Yeah, Mario 64 made a lot of nongamers do that. BEST LAUNCH TITLE EVER.

Yeah, can you just buy an iPhone at a store. Or do you have to sign up for 2 years of ATnT service.

No one knows for sure, but it seems unlikely that you'll be able to buy one without getting into a contract. However, the iPod commercials on TV and on the Apple website initially said that activation required a two year contract, how ever, that phrasing has since been removed from those commercials, so who knows. Neither AT&T nor Apple have been very forthcoming with details, and we're now two weeks away from launch.

However, one thing for sure, you won't be able to just walk into a store and buy one. Unless the store is an AT&T/Cingular or Apple Store.

From macrumors...

MacRumors.com said:
A Vnunet.com article claims that European mobile operators are unwilling to concede to Apple's iPhone partnership demands.

"Operators consistently told us, not for attribution, of course, that they had spoken to Apple and found the company 'unbelievably arrogant', making demands that 'simply cannot be justified no matter how hot the product is'," Avi Greengart, a principal analyst at Current Analysis, wrote in an advisory on Monday.

Several operators went as far as to say they "will never offer the iPhone." It's been widely publicized that Apple has made several unconventional demands of their cell phone carriers. In the U.S., Verizon is reported to have rejected Apple's deal due to the terms of the agreement. Apple's terms with AT&T are rumored to include revenue sharing of the monthly subscriber fees for the iPhone.

The other option offers is for Apple to sell the iPhone directly to consumers without a Sim card, allowing users to later install one from their mobile provider. This, however, would require Apple to somehow bypass the provider's voicemail to enable their "Visual Voicemail" feature which requires server-side support.

Sorry, Europe. If their demands are so crazy then why did Cingular bend over for it?

imagestalker why are you shilling this product so badly it's a ****ing touchpad cellphone/iPod you act like this is the most innovative piece of technology ever.

I would actually prefer to buy an unlocked version of the iPhone myself, but I will wait at least a year so price:features ratio is a bit better. (ie more memory, better camera, lower price)

why not just check the phone out instead of making asinine comments like these?

Regulators O.K. Apple's Bluetooth headset for sale alongside iPhone.

Federal regulators this week gave Apple Inc. the go-ahead to begin selling its seldom-mentioned Bluetooth headset alongside iPhone later this month.

Documents released Thursday by the Federal Communications Commission, which omit photographs and a user manual at the iPod maker's request, show the device to carry model number A1221 and FCC ID BCGA1221.

Apple has said little about the pen cap-like accessory since introducing it back in January alongside its first-ever mobile handset -- iPhone. Similarly, it has not said how much it plans to charge for the device or precisely when it will be available.

The Cupertino-based company also announced a second iPhone accessory, a wired headset with built-in microphone, that it also plans market alongside iPhone.

Again, details surrounding pricing and availability of that product have not been made public.

What's the lure of an unlocked iPhone? It's not like you can take it to another carrier and get the same functionality.

Dang, I was hoping those headphones would be included. It's been kinda up in the air as to if they would or not. Maybe the iPhone comes with just regular iPod headphones.

BTW, I did read somewhere (a long while back) that the iPhone does include a dock.

I'm guessing the headphones are indeed included, but this would be a replacement pair. The same way they are included with the iPod but you can buy them separately as well.

And they haven't announced what's in the box yet. I wouldn't count on a dock for sure. It might be in, and it would be nice, but I wouldn't count on it.

wow, if true thats just insane. Have they annouced pricing of the plans yet?

Sorry, Europe. If their demands are so crazy then why did Cingular bend over for it?

because they were desparate and European operators have a fairly wide choice of smartphones because they aren't massively shortsighted and think their consumers will only buy cheap handsets or business handsets?

My fingers are still crossed that I can buy one online on the 29th and have it shipped to me. I'm gonna be on the road on the 29th and nowhere near an Apple or AT&T store.

No, they haven't announced them yet, which I think is ridiculous at this point. We're two weeks from launch and we don't know anything about the plans. It's the last thing I'm waiting on before I decide if I want to buy one of these things or not.

It hasn't been confirmed yet, but the rumors are that there will be no online sales, at least initially. You'll have to go to a AT&T Corporate store or Apple Store to get one. But again, there are so many damn rumors out there, I wish Apple and AT&T would just spill the beans already.

According to David Pouge, it includes a dock in the packaging. He asked Jobs about it after the keynote in January. You can read it here. Granted, this isn't concrete evidence but I think it makes sense since they showed the dock in the keynote and the more expensive iPods include them also.

Oh! Cool! I think the dock makes a lot of sense with the iPhone. I don't think the iPods have included them for some time though. Which model has it? The 80GB only? I know the 30GB one does not.

I'm waiting on this as well. Though I've already set the fundage aside and decided.

Crap. Well, if that's the case then I'll have to attempt to get to a store. Hmmmm...problem is I'd be buying the phone in California when I live in Texas. Damn. :'( Damn you Apple!

is the OS/UI as fast and responsive as it is in the commercials?
For the most part, it appears to be. Keep in mind the web page in the ads was already loaded and cached. If you want to see browsing speed, watch the MacWorld keynote. Jobs loads loaded several web sites live on stage and it gives you a good feel for the speed. It might even be faster since they've had five months to improve it since then.

It's confirmed you can only buy it at stores, at least by CNN. The news article just hit the web a couple hours ago.

http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200706151711DOWJONESDJONLINE000941_FORTUNE5.htm

"AT&T spokesman Fletcher Cook said the limited availability will only be for the initial launch. Later, it will be sold on the Internet and through other outlets."

How long are you going to be gone? Why not just buy one when you get back? If analysts are to be believed, they're shipping 3 million of these things. I honestly don't think the demand will be THAT high for the launch.
