Yeah, in a dream world. Perhaps if we are lucky, meebo.com will create a version of their site for iPhone that works on their network (which is web-based and can log you into AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, and G-Talk/Jabber all at the same time). If not you could always just go to meebo.com in Safari, but the interface wouldn't be as good having to zoom in and stuff. A dedicated version of the site for iPhone would rock, sort of like Finetune.com on Wii.

Uh, I'm 30. And don't get me wrong, I use IM plenty at work. But I do text friends and family (got into it because I'm dating someone who uses it a ****-ton), and with a lot of folks having unlimited texting access now I can't think of anyone I couldn't get ahold of using the iPhone if I had to. I mean you do realize it IS a phone, too, right?

See, my theory is shot there, though I think it holds true among the age groups I mentioned. As for it being a phone, yeah, but sometimes texting or IM is just easier, when you just want to say "I'm on my way" or something like that.

And I don't disagree. But IM almost seems less useful to me for that since *most* people I know use AIM on their computers, whereas they don't on their phones. Besides, with the various IM standards out there you almost have to have one that does several services to get the most out of it. If they'd picked AIM people would bitch it wasn't MSN/Yahoo. :P

Agreed. The thing is, I use AIM. I'd like to be able to IM my friends who are on their computers, from my iPhone. I guess I'm just stuck with a web-app. If there was a dedicated iChat function, it would probably be connected at all times, which would big a big plus over using a web-app.

ITunes offers MP3 downloads now right? And almost any device on the planet can play MP3s. Now does that mean that you don't need the iTunes app to buy and download the MP3? Can I just open up the browser on my cell phone and download the MP3s? No.

It's the same thing here, except the MP3 files are H264 Youtube videos, the iTunes app is AppleTV and iPhone, and you don't have the ability to just copy files from those devices to your computer.

I don't even know where to begin with this one. But I know your comparison is completely off. You don't need iTunes, AppleTV or an iPhone to watch a video in H.264 whether it's on YouTube or not. And a whole LOT of devices play H.264, including PS3 and 360 because it's part of the MPEG standard.

Again, it's not a question of whether you know how to play back a H.264 video. It's a question of how do you download the videos from Youtube. And right now AppleTV, and soon the iPhone, are the only two devices on the planet who know the secret handshake to download the videos.

iTunes doesn't have .mp3 files. They have AAC files with heavy DRM. They're also selling songs that the record companies want to avoid others pirating. YouTube isn't selling anything and doesn't care about pirating. You're also not downloading the YouTube videos, they're being streamed.

On top of that, they're not the only two devices who have cracked the code. Here's a recent post over at Gizmodo about YouTube Mobile:

When the released the update for AppleTV and made the announcement for iPhone they said 10,000 videos available now, and more to come. That's because they just started the conversion process. It's going to take awhile to get all those vids updated.

iTMS started selling MP3 files from EMI 3 weeks ago.

Neither the iPhone nor iTV uses the mobile site. You can see the mobile site for yourself at m.youtube.com. If Apple was really using the videos from that site that almost any phone made in the last year can use, do you really think they would make a freaking commercial about it? :lol

I don't know what's so hard to understand about this. The Apple-Youtube partnership is exclusive to Apple. Thus Apple is allowed to do things other companies are not allowed to do. Just like iTunes can download music tracks from the iTMS store - the iPhone Youtube client can download certain video formats from Youtube. That's one more reason why you should be excited about the iPhone!

Ok. What ever you say man. It's counter to everything I've heard and read anywhere else but from you and the quote I posted above even says that the mobile link is using the h.264 format. You can believe what you like. You may want to read the links I posted for White Man while you're at it too though.

But in the greater scheme of things, it doesn't really matter. YouTube is making the conversion to h.264 and any device can use it that supports that format.

I don't know anything about this iphone-youtube business, I just figured they'd re-encode videos using a different codec (in this case h.264). I didn't think the youtube app was a specific client accessing a unique site - just that it accessed youtube, and did what it wanted fromt the main youtube site. Again I know nothing. Nevertheless the EMI iTunes plus files are not mp3s, they're still AACs, as far as I know.

Why in the world would YouTube go to the trouble (time/effort/resources) to convert all the videos in their library to H.264--making a redundant copy of their library in a different format--for use on just TWO devices? Though other announcements have not yet been made, don't kid yourself that the H.264'ing of YouTube stops with Apple.

Ah - I think that's where you got confused. The quote says H263, not H264... H263 is basically the codec you get on the Youtube site right now (Sorenson Spark Flash codec.)

There is some misinformation in those links, where people assumed the same things you did. It is true that Youtube announced backporting everything to H264 - but for the time being that format will be exclusive to the iPhone and AppleTV. Will you get it on your desktop in the future? Probably - maybe if Flash opens up their codecs - but if you want it now, you need one of those two products. And it looks great.

Because there are problems doing it in Flash, Apple is a great developer of embedded interfaces to start with, Eric Schmidt sits on the board of Apple, and Google and Apple are close.

That still does not mean that AppleTV and iPhone are gonna be the only two devices that get it. Or that Apple's gonna be the only company to benefit. It means these two products are the first two to do it, and probably for all the reasons stated. But they don't have the whole library converted yet either.

Ok, I stand corrected on the h.263 mobile thing. Now ask yourself this. Would it make more sense for YouTube to re-encode the existing library and all new videos in h.264 and replace Flash, which is, as you've stated is troublesome. Or would it seem more logical that they do all of that anyway, just for Apple, but then maintain two libraries with double the storage and double encoding all new files? Which one of those scenarios seems more likely?

Regardless, it's obvious that we won't convince each other either way, and I've derailed this thread long enough.

I didn't mean to give the impression that Apple would permanently be the only way to get to this stuff, just that for now it's defacto exclusive to Apple. It's pretty cool and another good reason to get an iPhone. I work at Youtube (when you type "they" you sort of mean "you" :) ) so I'm obviously pretty stoked on seeing it released - I'll be camping out to buy my own next week!

I was just thinking the same thing. Had you mentioned that you worked at YouTube, we could have done awaywith some of this crap and gotten down to other questions. Like why would you duplicate the entire YouTube Library. But again, lets not de-rail it again.

SuperPac: those are nice wallpapers as well. I'll bet they are going to look sweet on the iPhone screen.

Ant: You have some really nice ones too.

After we get our hands on our phones we'll have to customize the hell out of them. :)
 
Whats the difference between iPhone Youtube and the Youtube channel that comes with the N95?

N95 only gets select mobile channels while iPhone has access to all Youtube content? Is that right?

Well, you don't have access to all the content, as others have mentioned. But basically it has nothing in common with the N95. You get search, discovery, lists, a cool interface and better video quality.

It's quite small. Smaller than you would think judging from the original images that were released. I've read a number of comments that from people that have used it that said it's smaller than they had expected.
 
I'm pretty torn about whether to get the iphone or not. But not because of price, it's because I'm considering the AT&T 8525.

Music is better on iphone. Interface is better on the iphone. Video, pics and internet seem to be a wash (windows media mobile and internet explorer mobile work very well). Iphone has the cool factor and possibly a better input method (though the 8525 has a slide out keypad). Both cost about the same. Iphone has the huge storage advantage out of the box (I'd have to buy mini-SD cards for the 8525). Both have 2MP cameras.

The 8525 has the advantage in that it integrates with programs I use often (pdf, word, excel, powerpoint microsoft money). I can take my videogame strategy guides on the road with me. More apps are available for Windows Mobile, though the iphone app market is going to explode.

It's close, and I'm torn. I'm not eligible for an equipment upgrade, so I'd have to pay for either out of pocket. My Sony Ericsson just fell yesterday and half the screen is messed up, so I need a new phone asap.
 
So there isn't anyplace that actually has a real iPhone on display for the public yet, right? And I take it that won't be happening before it goes on sale?

It makes every feature phones have had for years seem brand new. Thats what Apple does. And damn does it work.

Looks amazing as expected. My biggest concern remains the functionality of the on-screen keyboard. How well does it really work?

Well in one part of the video it shows him make a mistake while typing really fast but the auto correction fixes it seamlessly. Seems nifty to me.

Hell I wouldn't doubt it. In the video it has native support for PDFs, DOCs, and XLSs files as well so I'm pretty sure it can support GIFs too.
 
That was a nice video, but once again the lack of a GPS is very disturbing. The whole maps segment just screamed for it.




Especially considering the US is pretty much the only country where they deal with city blocks. That thing is going to be bitch to navigate in here Holland for example.

And the SMS-segment made me hate Apple's decision of closing the iPhone more. It's MSN but having to pay for every single message you write. (substitute for AIM, ICQ, etc) And of course the lack of real 3G networks. You can't rely on an open WiFi signal to get all the updates for basically everything, UMTS at the least (HSDPA would be bliss).
