Argh, that shit is being flung up here in Mass. iPhone campers owned :lol

Would a company that expects to sell out of a product within an hour or two on the 29th issue a press release like this one?

iPhone Premieres This Friday Night at Apple Retail Stores
Free Workshops, Genius Bar Support and One to One Personal Training

CUPERTINO, California—June 28, 2007—Apple’s revolutionary iPhone™ will go on sale this Friday, June 29 at 6:00 p.m. local time at Apple® retail stores nationwide. All 164 Apple retail stores in the US will stay open until midnight, and customers can purchase up to two iPhones on a first come, first served basis. Beginning Saturday morning, iPhone customers can learn how to get the most out of the iPhone with free, in-depth workshops offered throughout the day at all Apple retail stores. Every Apple retail store will offer support for iPhone at the Genius Bar and personal training through Apple’s new One to One program.

Two iPhones per person? I guess that means supply is very, very healthy. Hopefully this also means eBayers will stay the hell at home.

I just noticed something in this picture...
28pogue.2.L.jpg

He has it tilted to the right. I was under the impression you could only tilt the iPhone counter clockwise with the top to the left, but in this photo he clearly has it tilted to the right.

Horizontal keyboard only in Safari.

Can't they update the phone in the future to add a horizontal keyboard for all functions? Is AT&T cellphone service still shit in the NY area? No one I know has the service, and last time I checked it wasn't very good.

iPhone campers in NYC got destroyed last night. :lol

Yes, they can. That's another reason why the virtual keyboard was a good idea.

As for the rotation, the accelerometer simply knows what direction you're tilting it and can rotate appropriately. I only mentioned it because early reports from MacWorld said that you could only rotate the iPhone to the left. I guess they changed it to allow for tilting in both directions.

I'd love to own an IPhone but have seen enough to make myself wait for a revision or two. The headphone jack is an issue for me.
Theres an adapter accessory coming out tomorrow if it really is that big of an issue.

I really don't want a 2inch adapter protruding from my phone. I'd rather wait until Apple fixes the flaw. That isn't my only reason for waiting. I just spent $800 on a new radiator, rotors and brake pads and of course labor. :lol

Really sounds like Apple made a TON of these things if their stores are gonna be open till midnight on Friday and are opening an hour early the next day for more sales. I mean at this point why would you even need to line up hours early at all? Just walk in and buy...this is the way all tech products should launch. No hassle. (Though I guess we'll see tomorrow if that's really the case.)

iPhone goes on sale in the US on June 29, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. local time through Apple’s retail stores and AT&T’s select retail stores. Apple’s online store will be taking orders for iPhone beginning at 6:00 p.m. PDT. iPhone will be available in a 4GB model for $499 (US) and an 8GB model for $599 (US), and will work with either a PC or Mac®. Beginning June 30 and continuing through the summer, Apple Stores in the US will open early at 9:00 a.m. for iPhone sales.

so are the earphones that come with it standard ipod quality? (i.e. not that good) haven't heard any reviews really talk about it other than voice quality sounding 'decent'. What about as an MP3 player? I would want this to replace my old ass 10gig 2nd gen. ipod too not just my phone...

The headphone jack is a standard 1/8 inch, it's just that it's recessed so if your headphones have a thick plug, they may not fit into the recessed hole.

ah ok that is not so bad. I can always shave the plug on pair of earbuds :D

Anyone in SF who knows if any lines are starting to form?

At first I was bummed about the two per person thing as that would seem to encourage scalpers, but I'm encouraged because it points to Apple having a crapton of these things.

I haven't been downtown or to Stonestown to check, but you could always hire this guy:

Worried about long lines to buy an iPhone on Friday? A San Francisco man said he and his band of pranksters will create a diversion to distract everybody else in line and allow you to slide right up to the front.

The company -- called "Over Here, Jerks!" -- will go to Apple or AT&T stores and release a wild animal, let loose a bad smell, or do something else disgusting, shocking, or scary. The plan: Everybody in line runs away, except for the company's client, who'll be first up for service.

"You might even have time to grab a few lawn chairs, sleeping bags, and sandwiches amid the mayhem!" according to the group's Craigslist ad.

The company will work Market Street in San Francisco, charging $50 for the first three attempts and $10 for each additional attempt. "It's like a text-messaging plan," said organizer Matt Grimmer of San Francisco, who works by day as a biologist and cancer researcher.

The group includes amateur magicians, people who work at a petting zoo, and people with skills in camouflage techniques.

The iPhone event is just the launch of the company, which plans to go into business creating divisions for other events, Grimmer said.

Some advice for everyone picking up an iPhone tomorrow. Do some research and find the smallest, most out-of-the way AT&T store you can find (make sure it's a CORPORATE store, not an AGENT or DEALER). Sure, they won't get as many units in, but the lines won't be as ridiculously long. I live in a mid-sized city (Birmingham, AL), and I haven't seen any lines yet.

The Apple stores are going to be zoos, so I would avoid them unless you just want to see the madness.

Thanks for the link. I still think you probably have a better chance (of at least a less chaotic scene) at an AT&T store rather than an Apple store.

I keep wanting to say "you'll probably just be able to walk into a store Saturday morning and pick one up" but then I have Vietnam-style Wii flashbacks.

What was hilarious about the Wii was that you COULD walk up to Target or Best Buy about an hour or two before opening on the launch day and you still could've gotten a Wii. However, for the next 3-4 months it was much, much more difficult.

The iPhone will NOT be the same way.

Not at the Best Buy I camped overnight at. People who showed up an hour before opening went home empty-handed.

And 3-4 months? Try, 7-8! I still haven't seen one on a shelf anywhere.

The headphone jack thing is being overblown. Apple has stated that most headphones won't have any problems at all, although the adapter will help with the ones that do. It's a non-concern for me, and I have some expensive ass-headphones at home.

Even so, it was the holidays, the system was inexpensive, Nintendo wasn't selling Wiis through their own online store as well and their however-many-hundred-thousand units were spread among a much larger pool of stores. That Apple is confident they'll have enough to last Friday to midnight in all their stores then to open at 9 a.m. on Saturday for "sales" is very, very telling.

Plus, I'll go back to this -- honestly, why in the world would they launch at 6 p.m. local time, after work for most people, if getting one meant not going to work in the first place. I think (or hope) that Apple has anticipated a big launch. And I hope this starts a trend where you don't *have* to line up the night before just to get your hands on an anticipated product. Since the PS2 every game console launch has been a friggin' joke, and it'd be great if that changed. **** lines.

And hey, if they have a half-million or a million units at launch and everyone buys them up (including moronic eBay scalpers) that's gonna make for one hell of a press release on Monday. They want to sell 10 mil by the end of calendar year '08, right? How great would it be to do a million in the first weekend? Not just for Apple but AT&T as well...that's a lot of new subscribers locked into 2-year contracts.

From what I understand, they have A LOT more than half a million in the pipeline. The rumors are 3 million.

I see them, but I live in Alabama. I camped overnight at Target in freezing weather and I was pissed to see the people rolling up at 6-7 am who were still able to get a spot at the back of the line. Never, ever, ever doing that again.

As annoying as they can sometimes be, I sort of like the traditional line-wrapped-around-the-store console launch. It's cool to see abunch of my fellow obsessed gamers grouped together like that. I could've easily just ordered Halo 2 online, but I made it a point to wait in line at a Gamestop midnight launch. Just builds up the hype and makes you feel as though you're participating in and buying something special.

The only things that are still bothering me are both AT&T related. One is the piss-poor EDGE network, we all know how bad that is.

The other is the apparently also very poor AT&T coverage. I keep hearing how bad their network is, even though they're always running those ads about how Cingular has the fewest dropped calls.

Can any existing AT&T/Cingular mobile users share their experience with the network? Currently I am a T-Mobile customer.

As a T-Mobile customer, it should be an upgrade for you. ;)

Seriously, the year I was with T-Mobile was the worst cell service I've ever had.

Yea, it's fun and all that--if you know everyone is going to get what it is you're waiting for...

It really depends on where you are. I get really good coverage around the STL area, but for some reason when I am at home the network can't penatrate my thick plaster (and probably lead paint) walls. I can get calls but the signal fluctuates. From my experience, it is miles better than T-mobile coverage here. Your results may vary.

It's like gambling - the wait's not nearly as fun without that potential risk that you'll go home crying.

Stop it! I need these reasons to justify my decision to wait! You are not helping.

$800 for my truck today
Tiffanys for g/f bday next week
Trip to OC in July

Chris is a poor man right now. And quite frankly Kung Fu, you are not helping this situation by proving me wrong. :lol

:lol Well, the iPhone will be waiting for you after you get back from the OC. ;) I'll give you a full review next week after I've had the weekend to play with it. Purely for informational purposes and not at all to try to tempt you further. Honest. :D

Oh I agree. It's different when you're in a line for a hyped product/release and everyone in the line is there for the same reason and NOT JUST TO EBAY IT (a la many of the PS3 lines last November). That's where I have a problem. Luckily, all signs point to them having a ton of them to sell, so I dunno that there will be any significant market on ebay for it. And with the return policy being only 14 days, it's not gonna pay to hold onto an unopened one for very long.

Please tell me you have the camera for the 360, that'd be the perfect demonstration. Yeah, maybe I will buy it some time after I get back. To be honest with you, I want to buy a Mac Book or MBP in Oct. Plus I need to save some money for a Gixxer. :D

Do you live in the Bay Area? If so you're in luck. Service and EDGE here are stellar.

So apparently Steve Jobs just had a company wide meeting and everyone in Apple receives a free 8gb iPhone. Can someone confirm this? If so, WHY DIDN'T I GO WORK FOR APPLE >:(

<-- works at Intel instead.......

What's the warranty on these things? Cingular offers no purchasable warranties for their smartphones (hello, busted Treo 680 that died because a box fell on it).

Yep. That is what's gonna be very sweet about this launch. The paranoid people who want it first will get it, and the rest of us who just want it day one without lining up will be able to get one too. I, for one, welcome this change. Bring on that three million number, baby.

They will offer AppleCare coverage on the iPhone, but the full details are not known yet. But I expect it'll be as good as any other Apple product.

I spoke with one of my old Apple store co-workers the other day, and she manages all of inventory for repairs at that particular store. When I asked her what the process was for the iPhone (if it is repaired in store, if Apple is even handling the repairs) she said they haven't received any sort of info on it and won't know until Friday. I am really really glad I don't work there anymore. :D

Yep, I'm getting flashbacks of the US PSP launch.

Just got this from another forum...

Anyone switching from another service provider? AT&T offers a referral program that rewards both the referrer and the switcher with $25 gift cards! (Max $125 or 5 referrals per year for the referrer)

If you're an AT&T customer and want to refer, you have to register as a referrer here: https://referral.wireless.att.com/home/landing.do

Switchers, PM a referrer with your FIRST NAME and EMAIL ADDRESS. You will receive an email through which you will need to register for the program and enter your new AT&T account info (when the time comes). I registered as a referrer; you can PM me here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/private.php?do=newpm&u=2113

More info here: https://referral.wireless.att.com/public/reward.jsp

FAQs: https://referral.wireless.att.com/public/faq.do

Again, only 5 referrals per person!
