I didn't know why GDJustin was being such as ass about it anyway. Unless he is an engineer working on the project, he can't say what is BS and what is not.

The max speed is what it is and can't be changed. The Engadget post even says the same thing, right at the end.

In my post I even said that it was very possible that some people, regionally, might be getting better speeds than they were yesterday. The story seems to back THAT up, too. That's the nature of wireless networks like that. They're up and down.

The point is Edge, as a network, isn't upgradable. It has speed limitations that it will *always* adhere to. So posts like "zomg maybe Apple made ATT upgrade Edge?!?" make me ":lol :lol "

My mother has AT&T service and she receives a decent discount because she works for a hospital. 24% off service, 45% off equipment. If I decide to add a line and use this phone, would the discount cover the iPhone? Or will some "out of left field" fine print come into play?

You added that little edit after people posted stories about the speed increases and reasons for them.

Still wrong, though. No one is talking about theoretical maximums or changing the EDGE protocol. The actual network (you know, cables and towers?) can be, and apparently was, upgraded, making real-world speeds faster.

6. Edge and Not 3G
Apple's decision to go with AT&T is also costly for another reason. The iPhone apparently will be using AT&T's super-slow and crappy Edge data service instead of 3G. Wow. Another major screw-up by Apple. Are you willing to pay for a slow data connection on your "cool" iPhone? Stop and think about that for a minute. You're going to be paying for a data service that might take a few minutes to load this web page, depending on how it performs that day you use it.

Given that the iPhone is supposed to be "cutting edge", I can't imagine what Apple was thinking to release it on a service that doesn't offer 3G data transfer speeds. It's like Apple released a corvette that can only go up to 35mph. What the heck is the point?

This is apple's fault not AT&T's

It will work like it does in Safari in Mac Os X. That's one of the biggest features- it has a real web browser.

I think you are setting yourself up for disappointment if you think its going to match a desktops browsing performance exactly.

There was some detail in the Slate article, I think. The Cap on the network is like 80kpbs and it was running at like 40, now it's around 60, I think. The network itself is not upgradeable, but the towers and equipment- specifically the way the route the bandwith and calling- are changed

Why would Apple offer 3G now when they can include it in iPhone 2.0 (among other features I'm sure they're holding back) in 6-12 months so you can all shell out another $600.

A real web browser...without support for Flash, Java, and most forms of streaming media. That's a funny kinda of "real". For purposes of browsing GAF, it'd probably work just fine, although like most cases of mobile browsing it'll be more neat than really all that functional or intuitive, especially when it comes to forums/posting. Guess we'll see soon enough.

Hardware is part of the network, right? Well they made upgrades to the hardware that lead to faster speeds. So yes, the network was upgraded and the result was faster speeds. Why is it that hard to believe that? Same thing at work, they made upgrades to our hardware and now a wireless network that was a joke is faster than our wired connections.

Did not. Look at the timestamp on my edit. 15 minutes BEFORE the story was posted in here about the Edge tower tweaking :D

a 36$ activation fee, when you do all the activation yourself, without an employee of ATT, at your computer at home, is completely ghetto.

*shrug*

It's splitting hairs, really.

Let's say your home internet connection was unimpressive, so your cable company made some tweaks and performed their voodoo and managed to double your speed. Is their NETWORK any faster? Nope. It still has the same hard cap it always had. But if someone were to ask YOU if it were faster, you'd say yes. So for INDIVIDUAL USERS, I can see how they might be getting better speeds on Edge than they got, say, 48 hrs ago. But it's still a SLOOOOW network, and that slowness is rigid - set in stone. Unchangeable. Anyone holding out for "improvements" to Edge download speed needs to stop. It physically can't be improved past a very specific, clearly-defined point.

It's almost 4:00pm here in my time zone (central). Several small lines have started to form in my town. I'm about to head out with my buddies and get into a line. Have fun guys, I'll be back on later tonight with an iPhone in hand! :D

I'm waiting for it to be offered through the corporate portal.. yeah I may be waiting a few months, but it sure beats paying $600 for it. :(

I really do want one though.

Unless your company subsidizes the cost of the iPhone, you'll still pay $600 for it.

Also, there are about 35 people in line for the iPhone at my local AT&T store. In Birmingham. Alabama.

As a Canadian I can't get an iPhone yet - so all I can do is eagerly watch if Stephen Colbert is ever going to get one. :D

Either way, Monday's show is going to be great because of iPhone. I think it will be better if he does get one. We've had plenty of no-iPhone Colbert. I want to watch him flip out because he does have one.

This has already been answered, but no. I essentially get the same discounts, and I believe that AT&T employees do as well, but no one, from AT&T employees to people with corporate discounts, will get any kind of price break on the iPhone.

It's a ****ing PHONE. A PHONE. Why wait in line all day for that? It's cool, but I wasn't camping out over nite for my KRAZR. I hope those guys are scalpers who try to sell it on eBay and lose money in the process.

I'm glad I'm not this.

Wow, sitting here browsing sites and looking at the photos... it's pretty amazing. I really wonder how many iPhones are going on sale and whether or not there's even a need for all these lines.

Holy hell, was this already known? $129 for the bluetooth headset? or $19 for the headphone plug? That's expensive man!!
The bluetooth headset comes with the dual dock AND the bluetooth travel cable.

edit: you edited and noticed this already

People get excited over all kinds of stuff. I'll be in line many hours early for a video game to go on sale at midnight in a few months. :lol

According to ABC the Mayor Philly was on line at 3:30am. He got off after someone asked him if he should be on line waiting for a phone when Philly's murder rate is so high. :lol

Some tard in NYC was selling his spot on line for $5k (he was wearing a sign). He was offered 4.5k and he turned it down. What a fool.

Hahahaha. I bring that quote up CONSTANTLY. YOU WIN BEN BIRDIE YOU WIN. I work around the corner from an AT&T store, I keep looking at everyone who comes in, trying to spy an iPhone in the wild.
