How's the screen and web browsing compare to PSP?

Pretty cool, when you connect your iPhone it opens iPhoto and asks you if you want to import the photos into it (the ones you took with the iPhone camera).

And here is an unaltered image of the camera picture quality. It's of my dog and he never stays still (and neither do my hands, heh). Wasn't the best lighting either but I guess it gives an idea.

*sigh* I weighed the options... $50 cab ride to Apple Store vs. $10 cab ride to AT&T Store. Went to the AT&T Store. Big friggin' mistake. They wouldn't say anything about how many they got even after 6 pm, and they only got 20. GREAAAAAAAAAAAT. It was 7:30 by the time they got through those (man they were slow) so there was no time to go elsewhere.

Goods

Web browsing is incredible. I was expecting to have to be constantly zooming into things (which itself isn't bad) but to my surprise, even the tiny zoomed-out versions of the pages are completely legible and useable. Finally... web browsing on a phone works exactly as it should.

A million little touches. They've polished the UI on this thing so well. It does all sorts of little things I wasn't expecting. I wish I could list them but the more I use the device, the more of these surprise features are slipping from memory because they are so intuitive I can't remember which were new ones I'd not yet seen. Just know that there is much, much more feature wise on this thing than they've shown in all of the videos.

I really, really like the iPod interface. 'm finding songs much faster now and I love the way the videos screen looks.

Hardware is immaculate. The screen is crystal clear and bright. The phone is thinner than I thought, light but not overly light. The buttons feel solid and yes the screen gets smudgged but you can't see the smudges unless the screen is off making it a total non issue. The touch screen and it's sensativity and use is flawless. It does take a little adjustment but once you get the feel for it (no pun intended), it's perfect.

The included headphones. Sound great and the integrated button is something I never thought I needed and now I can't imagine living without. The ability to play/pause the music (single click) and skip to the next track (double click) without having to pull the iPhone out of my pocket is great. Not to mention answering calls (single click) or sending them to voicemail (double click).

Phone. This thing is a phone too? wink.gif Seriously though, I've only used the phone part a little but everything I did worked perfectly including using the headphones for hands free use, the speaker phone, the visual voice mail and even adding/editing contacts.

The Bad

Minor crashes. I've had the iPod application crash once when I was trying to listen to music and surf the web. Safari has also crashed on me a couple of times when trying to load really big web pages (like threads on NeoGAF that have 100 posts and tons of animated gifs). When loading big pages like this, I've found that if I just scroll slowly and don't try to tax it too hard, it'll survive. Hopefully they can improve this. Good news is that because it's OSX, the apps quit gracefully back to the home screen and you can immediately reopen them. In the case of Safari, it'll puts you back on the last page you were viewing.

The dock. It's almost too small and it's hard to pull the phone out of it.

Edge data. Yeah, no big surprise here. I don't remember even dial-up being this slow. It works as long as you have a ton of patience. One nice thing, the included YouTube app detects if you're using edge and will stream you low-res versions of the videos instead.. high-res on wifi.

IMAP folders. For some reason, I've not figured out how to get my IMAP mail folders to show up. Only my inbox is showing up. Will continue to investigate.

Summary

Totally worth the wait and hype. I'm happy. Very happy.

Screen is immaculate. I've never seen a screen this crystal clear and bright. Better than a PSP. I've not browsed on the PSP but I can't imagine it being much of a compairison. Web browsing on the iPhone is like having a tiny computer with Safari installed that you can zoom in and out with. More questions are welcome.

I want one too dude, I'm in Montreal and a Rogers customer, I'm pretty scared at the potential pricing though. At least $699 for the phone and the custom service plans are going be anywhere from $60 - $100 month at current prices. I hope when we get it next year, it'll be cheaper and hopefully have alot of the major issues fixed ( if any ). But I'm gonna pick one up for sure.

When you're in the podcasts section and you click on a video podcast, it will play the audio but not the video. It just shows one frame of the video as the cover art. You have to go to the videos section and then play it from there... kinda weird/annoying... should be a simple software fix though.

After going through a podcast, it asks if you would like to delete it to conserve space. Pretty neat. Not sure if that's just for video podcasts or what.

Any scratch resistant tech on the screen? Or is it similar to the iPod with video's (i.e. scratch magnet)?
Don't know about scratch resistance yet, and I'll be damned if I attempt to scratch it just to find out if it's possible, but I can say they've performed some voodoo upon the screen that makes it impervious to fingerprints. Drag your finger all over the thing and it looks pristine.

Sweet.

That's not likely to be fixed as it's standard behavior from Apple at this point as their (current) Front Row application does precisely the same thing. You have to go to the Videos section to watch video podcasts.

I eagerly await the future when

1) I am up for a new contract
2) The storage has reached a ridiculous level
3) It's been hacked all to shit and people are doing amazing things with it.
4) It costs less (but for what it does, price is not that big a deal)

I want one, just not bad enough to get one soon.

Just got this message when syncing my iPhone, apparently it saves crash reports to a log file (just like OS X) and you can choose to send them to Apple. Pretty cool, will hopefully make the software fixes faster. I didn't even realize it crashed, must have been on Safari.

logs are stored in Macintosh HD/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice (dunno about on Windows PC's). I couldn't get it to actually open though.

Is anyone else having issues with e-mail? iTunes automatically synced my e-mail accounts from my Mac, but every time I tried to load Mail on iPhone, it would crash and go back to home. So, just to make sure everything was right, I deleted my e-mail settings, and I attempted to reenter my email accounts. However, every time I try to save using the preset GMail form, it crashes and sends me back to home without saving the info.

:(

I just got a text from AT&T saying my old T-Mobile number has been successfully ported over. Took about three hours.

Mrs. Stinkles wants to go get one right now. Should she?

This phone is amazing. It so easy to use. The screen is amazing. I just finished talking on it for about 40 minutes and easily wiped off the ear print smudge. Oh and again, the screen is incredible.

Several of the reviewers remarked that the glass is indeed very scratch resistant. Some said they carried around for two weeks without a case, and not a scratch on the iPhone anywhere.

Does iTunes 7.3 contain the ringtones tab? If so, what are our options for ringtones?

This is awesome, I didn't know about it until I saw the iphone introduction video on apple's site... I hate taking out my ipod from my pocket to pause or skip a song.

BTW, can you attach that button to different headphones or do you have to use the ones that came with it?

Looks like the Apple stores are your best bet for getting one this weekend. Just checked availability here in Texas and every store is suppose to have some tomorrow morning.

I'll be in one tomorrow getting my Macbook looked at before it goes out of warantee. I could have picked a better day!

finally got my phone working. Posted this from my iPhone. The browser is insane!!! I love it, and I watched some anime too. The screen is beautiful. Great job apple!

Yeah, my guess is it'll be crazy there most of the day. I guess I could have waited and gone to the Apple store tomorrow rather than ordering online. Just hoping it doesn't take the 2-4 weeks they are stating on the website.

Camped out from 1:30 to launch at the Pacific Place Cingular/AT&T store.

About 100 people in line. The U-District Apple Store had about 300.

No one was surprised I got in line?

I didn't get one, FYI.

So back home from all the craziness.

Got to Apple Store in Galleria but there was over 500 people there around 1 o clock so my friend and I left (Just in case there wasn't enough) and hit up an AT&T store in Ft. Lauderdale(I live in South Florida on the East coast).

Was number 20 in line out of 50 or so, and damn I had a pretty straight gang of people. There was this one dude who had 9 full glasses of Wine and was hammered but ****ing hilarious.

DrunkGeezer.jpg

They had a cop there too just in case something happened. Then about at 5:30 this Fabio looking guy comes strutting out of his Range Rover and pays a guy who was waiting for him and takes the seat. We're all making fun of him in the back and the drunk guy calls him Fabio and then the guy gets a little pissed but ignored'm.

So when they let the first 10 in Fabio also went in. BUT little did he know Tow sharks were on the loose. A Towing truck driver pulls up to his illegally parked Range Rover hooks it up instantly(these guys are ninjas with this shit) and Fabio comes sprints out the store , starts yellin at the driver "PUT DOWN MY ****ING TRUCK NOW. NOW!!!!!!" He then jumps in his car half in the air aand yelling in it. Then this other tow truck ninja pops out of no where and gets under the wheels so smoothly and lifts the other side up. Now the guy is in the car in mid air yellin and screaming :lol

Shakey video I recorded of it while he was in the truck.

A cop came to the scene and argued him till things were smoothed out.

Channel 10 News(ABC) was also there and I was on it for a couple seconds when I bought the phone.

Oh yeah and AT&T sucked for a lot of people and all they're computers weren't working. Luckily for me I got a hella straight person and just told him "I don't want any plans or deals , I just want to buy the phone." which got me it out of the store in 5 minutes.

Yup, iPod's work the same way. Furthermore, if Apple handles the iPhone line like they have handled the iPod line (hopefully they won't and I have no proof that they will or plan to), don't count on any major new features being added or fixed to the current model. The iPod's for the most part get released, get a couple of bug's patched and a couple of new ones introduced in new firmware, and then bam a new model packed with new features comes out leaving the old model left to rot. The old models sometimes even have the necessary hardware to incorporate some of the new features, but Apple refuses to update it. The last time they did this they didn't completely screw over the previous model (iPod with video refresh added new features like controlling the backlight brightness and adding the ability to search; the original iPod with video's got the backlight brightness feature, but didn't get the most important new feature, search...) so hopefully this has changed.

Anyone figure out if it's possible to highlight and delete a block of text? It's pretty annoying in Safari to have to hold the delete key down while it deletes a huge URL.

There doesn't seem to be a way to re-organize cities in the weather app either (so it'd always go to Cupertino first instead of your city). I got around that by just deleting everything but my city so no big deal. Same thing for Stocks. Maybe there's a way but I just haven't figured it out yet...

Good to know. I'm definitely getting one when they add a faster data connection.

Click the little "x" on the right side to delete the whole thing. AFAIK you can't highlight text.

I don't think Gmail likes iPhone :( It seems to be the one causing problems. I was able to sync my college email just fine, but now that I added Gmail as well, it crashes every time I load Mail or try to go into advanced settings for my Gmail account.

Man, I'm really loving the syncing done with the Address Book. Gonna reorganize my photos next, and then add album art to mp3 files without them.

Safari browsing takes a bit of getting used to but is so, so awesome. <3

I have my phone but it turns out I have to wait until tomorrow to activate it. Apparently yesterday when we opened up our new family plan the guy entered my dad's wrong social security number because when I tried to activate the phone it said the information was invalid and to call att. When i called them they said the social didnt match with the one they had on file so my dad has to go to the store and have them change it. So for now all that I can do is sit here and look at it.

No ring tones tab, but it's coming for sure.. the images are inside the app bundle.

http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/29/ringtone-images-hidden-in-itunes-7-3/

Also in the localization strings looks like they're planning on adding disk use (to use it as an external hdd), and voice memos.

Thanks! Saves a lot of time in Safari.

How bad is the fingrprint magnetism? Do you need a silky cloth all the time or can you see through the oil? Anyone try a stylus? Does that help any with the fingerprinties?

I'm on full brightness and when using the phone you will barely see fingerprints. But if you put it on a all white image or turn of the screen yeah, you'll see all of em. But the wipe does work nicely. I'll have hella pictures up in different settings and areas tomorrow when I'm out.

Chrono said:

The button is part of the headphones that come with it. Doesn't come off. As for fingerprints, again, you can't see them unless the screen is off and then you simply wipe it like you would a glass window.

damn all this praise is making it real hard to hold off on this...i want

here's my q. assuming a new version comes out in a year or so, can we just ebay this first generation version and go pick up the newer one? any downside to this? is it possible?
