If you select an artist, the first thing listed is "All Songs". Press that and you can then press "Shuffle" to play their songs randomly. If you instead select an album from that artist, again you can select "Shuffle" to randomly play all tracks on that album.mashoutposse said:

My fault; I was talking about within iTunes on the computer. I want to be able to sync a few select artists/albums to my iPhone without having to check things off manually. Any way to do that?

I just found another cool thing, go to apple.com/trailers on your iPhone.... it redirects you to an iPhone specific version of the site.
You can stream all the trailers from there (which appear to be formatted for the iPhone screen) and it's even kinda like the YouTube player, where you can rotate it into landscape view and you've got all the same controls etc.

So I got to play around with the iphone today at my local Apple store. Just an FYI, they had about 15-20 4gb units in stock...
Anyway, when I first picked it up I was shocked at how slim it is. I thought it would be a little bulkier, but hey I am not complaining.
Next I tried using safari, and while I liked it, I couldnt really enjoy it that much. My biggest issue is with the onscreen keyboard. I have big digits, so when I was pressing keys to type in an adress, it would sometimes take the letter next to the key I was trying to hit. I think by the end of my demo, i was a little better. The other issue I had with safari was the way you scrolled in and out. I liked the concept, but if you happen to put your fingers over a clickable link, it would go to that page, or give you an error that say couldnt open pop-up. Whatever, I guess thats minor. The other thing that kinda sorta irked me was that certain video sites I tried like funnyordie.com didnt work, because you needed flash, and obviously you cant DL flash to the phone.
After I was done messing with Safari I tried out the ipod, and let me tell you I LOVED IT!! The way the screen scrolls through your music so fast is great, and when you turn it sideways and you can browse by album cover that was awesome as well. While I was playing with the ipod, I decided to make a call to a buddy to test out the clarity, and I loved how the song stopped playing, let me make the call, then when I hung up, the song started right up again where it left off.
As I mentioned above when I made a call I was surpised at how clear and loud the voice on the other end was. It blows my RAZR out of the water.
Last I tried the camera, and I liked it. The screen gives you a good idea of how your picture will look... just a shame there is no flash... oh well.
Anyway thats my brief impression of the iphone. After I was done, I was talking to one of the employees and asked her if she got her free one yet, and she looked at me like I wasnt supposed to know, but then she admitted it and said she hadnt received it yet, but that when she does, she is canceling her verizon and is going to sign up at AT&T.
I have one question for the owner of the iphone... Can you take any of your mp3 that you might have on the ipod part of the phone and make it a ringtone? Or do you have to use ringtones made especially for the phone?

Unlike you guys, those who are right now driving the UMPC space has gone through many iPhone-esque devices already in the past and know to well the limitation of devices promise "teh internet" with a embedded CE device. The lesson learned over and over was that you can't have these limited capability CE device providing satisfying internet experience when the internet experience is defined on the full OS computers and is a constant moving target.
I personally went through Palm OS5 Clies with Wifi internet option 5 years ago (coincidently, the same resolution color screen as the iPhone @ 3.8" 320x480 transreflective LCD). There are tons of internet tablets that provide more full featured internet experience than the iPhone (Nokia n800 for instance, which has a 4.1" 800x480 color LCD allows for viewing flash websites).
The only new wrinkle the iPhone is adding to all this is that the web viewing for a phone is closer to the real web experience than what's already being offered for ages on the Windows Mobile smartphones. But they accomplish this by cramming a huge OS (OSX in the iPhone has a footprint that's around 700MBs! Compare that with your usual 32MB footprint for Windows Mobile phones) into a device with a processor that's not able to maximize it (iPhone uses ARM processor that can barely handle flash, just like the Nokia n800).
Eventually, many iPhone users will find the web experience on the iPhone to be too limiting and will be wanting to move up to a device that can give them the real web. And not too far off (months), you can have those devices for not much more money.
Oh and BTW, the great thing about UMPC platform is that you can have both the full computer experience (whether on the device or on the desktop via a docking station), or a tailored for on the go experience with launcher/wrappers for the OS like this.
So far I'm absolutely *stunned* at how durable the thing is. I suppose tomorrow I'll have to post video of this, but the drop tests got a little boring, so we took to playing soccer with my 8 gig yesterday, watching it ricochet at various angles off of everything inside.. and the thing still is in perfect shape. Even the metal casing around the outside didn't nick (!!!!). I tried the toss up into the air about 10ft and drop to the ground on a hard linoleum and carpeted surface with no damage. I grabbed my key and with a fair amount of verve jabbed and scratched at the glass, no damage. I can't say that I've ever had a phone period that could handle the impacts this thing has taken already, let alone a smart phone.
Still getting used to the phone, but overall... yeah. You just can't compare the OS to anything you've ever seen on a mobile device before, it just isn't close. If I could describe it in one word, I'd say "flow". Everything about the iPhone is about flow
On another note, AT&T's 3G network isn't HSDPA, it's UMTS. There's a difference in speed and latency between the two (and power consumption by virtue of the packeting differences).

After a day of heavy use, I'm completely in love. The included headphones actually work pretty well for calls, and people say I sound better/clearer than my beloved old phone, the SE 810. The screen looks great in bright sun, or complete darkness, and everything in between. Like the reviews say, if you go into a location with wifi -say, a cafe - it'll tell you, then offer to connect. Connect once, and it'll always switch to that wifi when you are near. Pretty sweet. EDGE wasn't that bad - it's usable, but you'll definitely notice Wifi. Took mine to a party last night, and everyone there wanted to see it and play with it. Everyone was amazed and thought it was very cool. One woman, probably about 30 or so in age, doesn't even own a cell phone and says she has no desire for one, but after she played with it and asked about the price, she said she thought that that was a very good deal and she expected it to be more. They also were amazed at the size of the thing.
As for battery life, I'm pretty impressed so far. I left it fully charge up before I started using it, and that was yesterday at 3 PM. It's gotten plenty of "typical" use since. I've made phone calls, read e-mail, surfed the web, watched YouTube, and even used it to navigate to the party. Right now, the battery is at about half-strength, and I intend to run it completely down and recharge it to condition the battery today.
