After a day of heavy use, I'm completely in love. The included headphones actually work pretty well for calls, and people say I sound better/clearer than my beloved old phone, the SE 810. The screen looks great in bright sun, or complete darkness, and everything in between. Like the reviews say, if you go into a location with wifi -say, a cafe - it'll tell you, then offer to connect. Connect once, and it'll always switch to that wifi when you are near. Pretty sweet. EDGE wasn't that bad - it's usable, but you'll definitely notice Wifi. The speed upgrade of EDGE definitely makes a difference.

I got plenty of people saying "ohhhh" when I used it around NYC. One old woman - I would guess 70 - says to me, "oh is that the iphone? How is it?" So I tell her a bit, but not much, thinking what does a 70 year old woman care about an iphone? Then she says, "if it was 3g, I'd have bought it. At least it has wifi." I must say, I was pretty shocked to hear a 70 year old woman talking about 3g and wifi.

How is the AT&T service in NYC? I am in Staten Island, and not sure of the service quality.

I have no problem with at&t in NYC - never had a dropped call, get reception where I should, etc. It's all i've ever known, though, so perhaps other services are better. Still, I have no complaints. The people who have Verizon seem to like there nyc service as well. I don't know anyone with Sprint or Tmobile...

I don't think this has been answered yet. Is the EDGE upgrade across the board, or only in metropolitan areas? Obviously NYC is going to get an upgrade, but what about my tiny city of Tallahassee, FL?

I don't see how any cell company can't have stellar service in NYC. It's such a populated place and everybody has a phone, there's no way any company could skimp on providing blanket coverage to NYC.

This works out pretty good then, cause my plan last till this time in 2009.

I don't really care right now, I quite like my VX9400 LG model. Does everything I want to be able to do at the time.

I am loving mine as well, got it last week for $0...AND it included a free headset, 2 gig Micro SD card and a USB charger/sync cable.

Screen is gorgeous, the voice recognition (Which supposedly the iPhone doesn't have, W T F!?) is awesome, and the music player is shockingly robust. Hell, I am thinking of replacing it with my Nano as my standard MP3 player....Once 4 gig Micro SD's come down in price.

Its not an ugly phone, looks better in person. Does everything I want.

Honestly shocked how great of a phone it ended up being.

What are you guys doing about cases? None of them seem to cover the screen (which shouldn't get scratched anyway), and the one I bought (DLO Jam Jacket) just bulks up the phone, attracts dust and just makes it look ugly. For now I just took it out of the case and it's been fine, but I'd still like to have one on it.

So, do any of the cases you guys have seen not have a clip (it goes in my pocket, this DLO has a pointless headphone management thing))/anything that will bulk it up?

ok guys,

I'm a UK user, as I understand it, this is a GSM phone so it'll work in the UK, anyone unlocked it from AT&T?

ebay is teasing me, they seem to be going for about $700 inc shipping on there which is reasonable at £350 (thanks dudya for the excellent exchange rate sucka).

I'm selling my Nokia 8800 anyway, but holding off the selling of my SE 810i...

Also, as I understand it, it costs $599 with a 2 year contract, are people buying it with the contract and just selling it? theres no profit in it for scalpers at all. Is this another PS3aggadon?

You don't go into a contract until it's out of the box and activated, so scalpers just buy it and throw it on ebay.

WTF...how does that work then?

In the UK, you sign up first, then they hadn you the phone. So I'm thinking we'll have to wait for a hack to appear then? :(

What are apple going to do when no one is signing up for AT&T? I'm now assuming that there is no subsidy at all with this then?

I bought a Belkin case which is basically just a leather sleeve for it. Not ideal, but it'll do until a decent leather flipcase comes out.

That's how it worked here too until the iPhone came out. It is (I think) the first phone that you activate in this way. It's all done via iTunes at home. I imagine it will be the same in the UK.

Well, you can only make emergency calls before it's activated, so the iPod/internet/basically everything doesn't work until your contract is in.

And yeah, it's not subsidized at all.

edit:
Also, I'm thinking about getting this case in black. http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=DF1A09F7&nplm=TN567LL/A

I hope my ATT store has it cause these shipping times are ridiculous.

I am at the Apple store checking it out. It is pretty cool. But it is all about the interface. Outside of YouTube, not much more different than my phone. But I cannot say enough about the slick interface. I do think that in future firmware it will be tweaked as even the salesperon showing me features was having issues.

But honestly, the interface is so slick, it is sick. I hope that this will truly change the way phone companies look at interfaces.

Wait wait wait a minute.....if I'm already an AT&T customer, I can get a $20 rate plan?????

OMG. I think I may be sold.

(If I do get one, I will be the biggest hypocrite in the world :lol)

I am making this post from an I phone at the store its incredible I just realized u can pinch to zoom in in safari as well. I have no problem with the keyboared

Well... that's up for debate.

Just got back from the AT&T store with this case:

I like it but the screen protector was a bitch to get on right so I just threw it out.

Later that night I was at the bar and these two coked out chicks walked over topless.... iPhone is truly great! :D

when you email someone your pics it scales them down a bit and makes them look better

Its a bit better than my old phones camera, but its not gonna replace a real digital camera anytime soon. Hopefully future firmware will at least let us adjust ISO and white balance.

Spoilers? It's a phone not the next big hollywood movie.

lol I think he means when reading GAF :lol

So far I have not found a way. hopefully future firmware will have highlight/copy/paste...

Those images are pretty darned good for a cell phone. Noone should expect good quality low-light images. My $450 digital camera has trouble with those.

The phone/calling screen isn't the same as the advertised screen in photos/commercials:

apple-iphone-call.jpg

They show a person's profile image in the small box in the top right, but on the actual iPhone, it uses the person's profile picture as the background.

I didn't see anything in the settings to switch between the two layouts or anything. Just something I noticed...

Yeah they are good for a cellphone, I just wish we could do some editing later like brightness/contrast and a rotate/crop tool. Maybe even little touch screen touch ups? I can't wait for a little paint app to sketch stuff out. I just hope apple is going to be quick with new widgets.

Give me t-mobile hotspot@home like features and i'm sold... my next phone will let me use wifi voip, even if its a shitty $50 phone

1000 minutes for $39.99 + $10 for wifi voip @ home and t-mobile hotspots + seamless switching between cell and voip + crappy phone > every feature on the iphone

Back from the official iPhone launch party in San Francisco last night. It was fun. Steve Jobs gave a speech and I saw Johnny Ives... who is really short. But damn, is he hot. A few micro-pictures and an entire set after the jump. And sorry for the blurry pictures. When Steve Jobs talks, people listen. Edit: He totally passed by me after he gave his speech. I caught a whiff of his smell. He smelled good.

Yeah, I ran into a lot of spoilers in the RE4 Wii thread. :lol

I'm such a whore. I said I was going to wait a year or two and let iphone 2.0 come out and some price drops, but once I realized my nextel plan was over in a week, I put in my order at apple.com :D

Any good belt holders for this phone?

So does the screen itself smudge easily? Or is there sometype of protective coating. The PSP was bad enough, I would be scared shitless with a $600 device like that.

My iphone is naked, completely naked! And I'm usually a freak about that sort of thing. The torture tests have me convinced, though. It's a tough little machine.

My friend just sent me a text that said "How did we ever consider not buying this?"

How indeed.

I picked up one of these

Works pretty nice for professional setting like when I'm going to work or something. But so far while I've been out on the town with it, I've just stuck it in my pocket.

The screen does pick up finger prints but most of the time you don't even notice the. I've only really seen them in odd lighting conditions. For instance, I went out for a walk in a nearby park this afternoon and it was overcast and dark gray at times, and the screen was actually dimmer than usual, so the smudges showed up a lot easier. But most of the time you don't see them at all.

Actually, it works as advertised on mine. The reason is that I didn't assign photos to my contacts directly on the iPhone itself. I assigned photos to my contacts using OSX's built in Address Book instead. When people call, I see their little pic up in the corner and my wallpaper on the screen.

I think I may be getting the iPhone after all. Since I'm an existing AT&T customer, that $20 is a real deal for me.

For my plan (FamilyTalk or whatever it is....my mom takes care of all of the expenses for her, my dad, me, and my brother), I have the pay-per-use data service (Internet and text messages) and it came to a total of $20.69 for me. That $20 takes care of me, plus I get 200 text messages (I had 70 incoming/outgoing).

Battery - iPhone will feature up to 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback.* In addition, iPhone will feature up to 250 hours—more than 10 days—of standby time.

I'm having a hard time believing these stats.

posting this from my 4gb... Just walked in to an Apple store about 4:30 this afternoon to pick up an airport card for my imac and they had plenty in stock, so i figured, why not? Take that, ebayers!

Believe it. My first charge was pretty impressive several hours of talk, tons of surfing and e-mail, YouTube video and a couple of hours of iPod use as well. I was at a party last night, and the thing got handed around to everyone for several hours. Battery life is actually pretty great, and I haven't really fully conditioned it yet.

Does anyone know how to configure it so that your iPhone gets your Gmail and marks it as read on your PC after you've read it on your iPhone? I enabled POP on my gmail settings and put the account info in the iPhone, but my iPhone keeps telling me I have shitloads of new Gmail messages when they just have never been read on the iPhone before (but I've already looked at them on my PC).
