Just seems a little quick on the trigger, but perhaps I'm a bit more patient than most. I don't expect those things in the first week or so of a product unless there is some major major issue.
Like I said, I think we'll see updates to iTunes well before we see a firmware update, barring any security issues or catastrophic bugs being found.
What other companies have released firmware updates or plans in the first few days of launch of a new product by the way?

The only big omission I wish had been included was copy & paste. But oh well, I love the thing otherwise.
It's not a matter of impatience, it's a simple interest in seeing where the platform is intended to go. By all accounts, this is very robustly spec'd piece of tech in terms of hardware and OS so it should be as extensible as platforms like Palm and Windows Mobile have been, if not moreso.Kung Fu Jedi said:

In this day, firmware upgradeable devices are more and more common and the question of how and when the product will get extended beyond its base form has become a very relevant question towards a possible purchase, esp. when it's apparent that the device manufacturers are clearly holding back features to ensure their stability and usabilty before release. The question is actually more relevant at the initial launch of an upgradeable device like this since all the possible upgrades are still to be made. If the iPhone was a year old already, with several FW upgrades already behind it, it wouldn't be as relevant.
With the 360 and PS3, MS and Sony were respectively discussing future intended updates before they even released these devices.

And yes, the 360 and PS3 talked about updates as well, and before release. But four days after they weren't saying "Update #1 will include this, that, and the other thing, and will be out in two weeks" which is what I kind of thought you were asking.
As a point of reference, the 360 came out in November and the first update of substance didn't come out until the following Spring. May I believe.

Ok, I figure there is a good reason why control over your music and videos is entirely ripped away from you in iTunes when the phone is synced. Can someone explain it?
-No more drag-and-drop song placement?
-Syncing requires RTS-like pre-planning and strategizing before you push sync. Adding songs, or videos requires setting them up properly in a specified compatible playlist first, then you sync. Again...no drag and drop. WTF?
-Wanna remove a song? Video? Album? Get an iPod! The iPhone demands a total reboot if you want to delete stuff, all or nothing motherfukker.
So is there a disconnect here? Best iPod ever? Yea, the interface is prettier, but usability has gone back to the dark ages. Is there a secret option buried I need to flip to turn off retard mode?

Also when you reach the end of a video, it will ask if you want to delete it to make more space.

I knew when you finished watching the video it would ask, but didn't know about the swipe option. I do that with e-mail that I want to remove, but when I tried it with music it didn't work. Didn't bother to try it with videos.

I suppose I am being a bit harsh on the iPod features, ultimately 4-8gb isn't a whole lot of space, and just futzing with a playlist or two outside of syncing isn't that difficult. I just hate being locked out otherwise.

Any tips for pausing or muting music quickly? Like if the phone is in my pocket and there is some magical button to push that does this? Volume adjustment is slow, and hitting the keyguard button just locks the phone, but ipod remains in full effect.
Maybe there is a menu option setting for this.

You could pull out the headphones, that will pause, or just use the button on the remote. One click will pause/resume, two clicks will skip to next track.

Anyone else having problems with wifi? I had an issue with getting my iPhone to connect to my router with WEP security so I disabled the security and it's been connecting fine - until today. For some reason my iPhone keeps reverting to EDGE today after I select my home wifi network, even with security disabled. WTF? Anyone else have this problem?

I noticed that it didn't seem to like 128-bit encryption all that much, but when I was having an issue earlier today it was due to an IP conflict and that solved my problem.

I figured my problem out. I just needed to select "reset network settings" to re-enable access to my router, and for WEP security just needed to make sure I select "WEP hex" password entry - this is not the iPhone's default mode so I had to switch to it before it would accept the password and connect.

I dumped some more mp3s on this sucker and have been rocking around town testing out the ipod function.
I wish some of my other headphones would work but then I guess you couldn't pause or skip tracks. Battery life has been great.
Oh and I almost had my 1st iphone mugging! I was buying some rum for the holiday, and some old drunk goes "hey is that an iphone? You should buy my tall-boys!" I said no, then he started to get loud and they kicked him out of the store :lol
