No one's saying they can't make a profit, but what they're raking in with the iPhone is just obscene imho.
So don't buy one. Nobody's making anybody buy it. If enough people think it's worth the asking price it will be a success. If not Apple will be forced to revisit their price strategy. Welcome to America!

I'm aware of that. That's not necessarily a deterrent to talk about future plans for a significant new product platform. It certainly hasn't stopped other companies.

I'm just asking a question, so the pre-emptive defensiveness is uncalled for.

No preemptive defensiveness at all. I just think it's silly to be asking when a firmware update may be coming and what it will include when the product has been out for four days. Just seems a little quick on the trigger, but perhaps I'm a bit more patient than most. I don't expect those things in the first week or so of a product unless there is some major major issue.

Like I said, I think we'll see updates to iTunes well before we see a firmware update, barring any security issues or catastrophic bugs being found.

What other companies have released firmware updates or plans in the first few days of launch of a new product by the way?

How in the hell? Mine got 4 hours of "real use" and a day and 8 hours in standby before it had to be charged. If I tried to use it for 13 hours straight it would have died.

I'm convinced I have a bad battery.

Did you turn the brightness all the way up? While pretty, this is the battery life I get while doing that.

I'm in Canada, I couldn't buy one even if I wanted to :lol

It's not a matter of impatience, it's a simple interest in seeing where the platform is intended to go. By all accounts, this is very robustly spec'd piece of tech in terms of hardware and OS so it should be as extensible as platforms like Palm and Windows Mobile have been, if not moreso.

I'm not so much interested in the when but rather whether it's been discussed in any capacity that indicates Apple's direction for the iPhone beyond it's launch state. Asking about when is really more about gauging possible frequency - first FW update coming sooner rather than later would possibly indicate a commitment to more frequent updates, for example.

In this day, firmware upgradeable devices are more and more common and the question of how and when the product will get extended beyond its base form has become a very relevant question towards a possible purchase, esp. when it's apparent that the device manufacturers are clearly holding back features to ensure their stability and usabilty before release. The question is actually more relevant at the initial launch of an upgradeable device like this since all the possible upgrades are still to be made. If the iPhone was a year old already, with several FW upgrades already behind it, it wouldn't be as relevant.

What other companies have released firmware updates or plans in the first few days of launch of a new product by the way?
With the 360 and PS3, MS and Sony were respectively discussing future intended updates before they even released these devices.

Apple has done the same thing already as well. They've touted the flexibility of the phone and the ability to add features as a selling point in the weeks leading up to the release, and while they haven't specific about what we can expect, they have said to expect updates.

And yes, the 360 and PS3 talked about updates as well, and before release. But four days after they weren't saying "Update #1 will include this, that, and the other thing, and will be out in two weeks" which is what I kind of thought you were asking.

As a point of reference, the 360 came out in November and the first update of substance didn't come out until the following Spring. May I believe.

Started tooling with the iPod integration....so far it sucks.

Ok, I figure there is a good reason why control over your music and videos is entirely ripped away from you in iTunes when the phone is synced. Can someone explain it?

-No more drag-and-drop song placement?
-Syncing requires RTS-like pre-planning and strategizing before you push sync. Adding songs, or videos requires setting them up properly in a specified compatible playlist first, then you sync. Again...no drag and drop. WTF?
-Wanna remove a song? Video? Album? Get an iPod! The iPhone demands a total reboot if you want to delete stuff, all or nothing motherfukker.

So is there a disconnect here? Best iPod ever? Yea, the interface is prettier, but usability has gone back to the dark ages. Is there a secret option buried I need to flip to turn off retard mode?

Yeah, it bugged me when I first started using the phone and I couldn't just drag and drop the stuff that I wanted onto the phone. Creating an "iPhone" playlist and syncing that did the trick for me, but you're right, it really needs to have the ability to access, add, and delete your files. Perhaps that will happen with the rumored "mass storage" update.

posting on an iphone, the screen pinch thing is so cool! Typing is fast & easy too.

Videos CAN be deleted. In list view, swipe from the center of the title off to the right or left edge of the screen. A "Delete" button will appear. I assumed you could do the same with music but I just tried it and it doesn't appear to work.

I knew when you finished watching the video it would ask, but didn't know about the swipe option. I do that with e-mail that I want to remove, but when I tried it with music it didn't work. Didn't bother to try it with videos.

The iPhone seems a bit inconsistent on some of those things.

TIP:

When using Safari and you want to scroll back to the top of a long page, just tap on the title bar on the screen (where the clock is) and it'll put you back at the top of the page with the address bar showing. :)

ah nice, I was looking for a way to do that. I could of swore I tried it before and it didn't do anything.

No, I wasn't been that demanding. Jeez.

Nice find. Particularly handy since the Refresh button is also stuck to the top of the page.

Ok, thanks for the video delete tip. Shame it doesn't work for everything.

I suppose I am being a bit harsh on the iPod features, ultimately 4-8gb isn't a whole lot of space, and just futzing with a playlist or two outside of syncing isn't that difficult. I just hate being locked out otherwise.

Another tip I just heard somewhere else... for quick punctuation--tap and hold the ".?123" button, slide your finger to the punctuation you want (they'll magnify under your finger), release on the one you want and it goes back to the alphabet. Kinda neat.

wow that is really nice for adding periods! great tips!

Any tips for pausing or muting music quickly? Like if the phone is in my pocket and there is some magical button to push that does this? Volume adjustment is slow, and hitting the keyguard button just locks the phone, but ipod remains in full effect.

Maybe there is a menu option setting for this.

You could pull out the headphones, that will pause, or just use the button on the remote. One click will pause/resume, two clicks will skip to next track.

No it's almost at 20% and auto brightness is off, and it does not seem to be helping.

Anyone else having problems with wifi? I had an issue with getting my iPhone to connect to my router with WEP security so I disabled the security and it's been connecting fine - until today. For some reason my iPhone keeps reverting to EDGE today after I select my home wifi network, even with security disabled. WTF? Anyone else have this problem?

Mine was reluctant to get on my home network until I turned WEP on.

I noticed that it didn't seem to like 128-bit encryption all that much, but when I was having an issue earlier today it was due to an IP conflict and that solved my problem.

Wifi works great on my home network (Linksys). I'm not using security. I did turn on MAC address filtering and added my iPhone's MAC address to the list of accepted devices. That way, nobody else can use my network.

I figured my problem out. I just needed to select "reset network settings" to re-enable access to my router, and for WEP security just needed to make sure I select "WEP hex" password entry - this is not the iPhone's default mode so I had to switch to it before it would accept the password and connect.

Sorry, I wasn't specific enough.

During that whole active day, the iPhone was used in iPod mode for some hours and mixed in with Safari for a bit, made a few phone calls, sent a couple of text messages, and spent some time in sleep mode. It was 13 hours of a combination of all the above, occasionally with them overlapping each other, until the battery died.

GAF Exclusive: How to Create Touch screen Wi-Fi iPods for free:

1. Create one AT&T account with your iPhone. This will be the only account you need

2. Plug in your next iPhone to iTunes and associate your existing AT&T account with it. Now your previous iPhone is a free wi-fi iPod without cellular functions or any cost and the new iPhone is the phone. You can fill it up with iTunes on any computer, just like any iPod.

3. To create another touchscreen wi-fi iPod, plug in a new iPhone and associate the existing AT&T account with it. Now the iPhone you activated in step 2 is a free touchscreen wi-fi iPod. You can fill it up with iTunes on any computer, just like any iPod.

4. ???

5. Profit

It's a daisy chain where the last phone activated is always the only one you pay for. The other ones are touchscreen wi-fi iPods.

Why would you want to do that?

1. Live in Europe

or

2. Love watching videos on your iPod but can't use iPhone as a phone
2.a Live outside AT&T coverage
2.b Have a company phone account
3.c Need exchange support

"It's the best iPod we ever created" is true

I dumped some more mp3s on this sucker and have been rocking around town testing out the ipod function.

I wish some of my other headphones would work but then I guess you couldn't pause or skip tracks. Battery life has been great.

Oh and I almost had my 1st iphone mugging! I was buying some rum for the holiday, and some old drunk goes "hey is that an iphone? You should buy my tall-boys!" I said no, then he started to get loud and they kicked him out of the store :lol

Or you could edit the playlist in iTunes and sync the phone so it removes the song, since it will only sync the changes, not dump all the iPhone contents. Simple.

Yeah what he said. Come on people, iPhone bashing is fine but at least get your facts straight first.

Yeah, I live in Canada and haven't seen or touched or can't even OWN the phone but know more about how to use the product... isn't that a wee bit sad?

Tried it out for the first time today at an Apple Store at the mall. All I can say is wow. The interface is so simple and stylish; just genius. I never imagined I'd be this impressed. I'm gonna try and hold out for the second generation, then this baby is MINE!

AT&T coverage is nationwide, just like all the major carriers.

Unless they threw them out, they previously offered tiered coverage plans. Local, Regional, and Nationwide ...

The rates changed based on where you where, and where you were calling.
