Crybabies. The battery is covered under the one-year hardware warranty, so I don't see why anyone is freaking out about this or claiming Apple has buried the information on their page. Anyone with an iPod over a year old has likely gone through this saga at some point, no one should be surprised.

They weren't exactly hiding that information, but it doesn't make the process any less stupid. This isn't a standalone audio player, and to expect people to have to be without their cellphones for three days is a little nuts. Expecting them to then pay $30 on top of the $80 for the battery for a loaner is even crazier. I guess it'll all come down to how the long battery lasts.

I just figured out the whole thing with why my phone didn't look the same as the iphone did in commercials, in regards to people calling with their picture popping up. Mine would replace the wallpaper with their picture, and it would be all big and blurry, not a small thumbnail like on tv and in this image (on the far right):
iphonehero20070702.jpg

It turns out that if you have photos on your iphone, and use the "add to contact" function, when that contact calls, the image will pop up all huge like that. but if you add the image in outlook (or address book on mac) to your contact, and then sync, then it will display it in the thumbnail, like in that pic.

Just FYI

if Apple had made the battery replaceable, people would just be complaining about how much fatter it is instead. It can't be both.

They're the masters of design - they could've figured out a way to make the battery replaceable and still keep the phone slim and attractive. There's plenty of nice looking gizmos out there that do.

I would be concerned about the battery replacement program if not for the fact that I've never had to replace a lithium-ion battery in any electronic hardware I've owned. I know it can happen but it hasn't happened to me. In my old SE phone the battery is simply the thing I have to pull out to get to the SIM card.

everyone says theyre "good" with the keyboard. but is it convenient and does it feel appropriate?

In my opinion, yes and yes. I've never had a blackberry or other smartphone though, so I didn't already get used to one way of doing it. Most of the mistakes I've made in typing have been caught by the auto-correct. And although I'm definitely not as fast on it as I am on a regular keyboard I'm much faster than I was on a 9-key cell. Though I gotta say I probably prefer the landscape keyboard in safari to the smaller keyboard that pops up in email and SMS.

Takes some getting used to, definitely, but I'd rather have it the way it is than a slide-out or a keyboard on the front. Personal choice -- I like the current aesthetic.

Completely agree. Same here. I've never had to replace the battery on my devices either. The old cell phone that I just retired after 3 1/2 years of use still had good solid battery life. I also am finding that I don't need to charge my iPhone everyday, so that will extend battery life as well.

Jedi you either never use the phone or you somehow received a prototype battery from the future. I've actually had to recharge my primary iPhone twice today, and my experiment iPhone has never lasted a full 24 hours with anything resembling use. I also bought phones for members of my family, and the biggest complaint so far after getting everything setup is that the battery life drains very quickly and takes relatively long to recharge.

I managed to kill my iPhones battery (from full charge to 5% warnings) in a little over two hours today, talking on the phone, using the internet (using the internet to look up locations and generating maps, etc), and listening to music in the brief periods between calls. This is *not* an unusual usage experience for me, and I'm absolutely terrified after 6 months when the battery has already had to cycle 300 times what the life on the thing is going to be. I've seen quite a few iPhones living where I live, and most of the people who have similar usage patterns to me have exactly the same issue.

The battery life issue makes this phone REALLY frustrating for me because I'd love to be able to trust it on my nights I didn't make it home to not die on me.

It takes me more than three hours of constant Internet use (on Edge) to drain the battery down to about 30%. I've done this twice- spent a couple days visiting family last week, away from my PCs- and that included a few phone calls and standby time above and beyond the three hours. I have no idea how you're draining the battery that fast.

My current charge has lasted me two days now, and included: watching about two hours of video, synching twice (a couple hundred MBs downloaded both times, and the phone removed from its cradle immediately so practically no chance to charge), several phone calls totalling over two hours of talk time, browsing the internet for about ten minutes total, checking the weather several times, about an hour and a half of listening to music, and receiving and retrieving several voicemails (which I believe are streamed to the phone from Edge and stored in memory until you listen to them). After all that the battery is still above 50%.

If your battery is dying that fast, something is wrong with your phone's battery.

I spend longer than that surfing on wifi or edge, watching videos (I have 25x 30 minute episodes of naruto on the phone) or listening to music.

My last big usage count for the phone was 7 hrs and 38 minutes of doing various things. I intentionally tried to kill the battery that day. Most days I wear it down to 50% or so

I find it amazing that you guys seem to be getting phenomenally better battery life than not only my own personal experiences, but that of nearly every professional review printed to date. I suppose that in order to claim "average" battery life, edge cases are always going to occur, but my experience has been far too consistent over more than one device to simply wave off as a "defect".

Even more amazing, considering the math (mAh capacity) and drain of the components while in use seems to be exceeding spec by quite a bit. Not only that but outperforming power management wise every other device in the same class by quite a large margin!

Which professional reviews have their battery dying after a couple hours of use?

Were you talking a few hours total or a couple each of those activities?

Show me ANY review where they get 2 hours of battery life, and I'll believe you. You are getting significantly less battery life than me or any of my friends, let alone what other people on the interwebs are claiming. I used my phone all day today - 4 hour train ride listening to music, email, keeping up on the Nadal match, and later, more emails, texts, music, and checking baseball scores every few minutes - and my battery wasn't even close to being completely drained. I don't have some super phone. Why is it outside the realm of possibility that your battery might be off?

Like who? Mossberg says the iPhone's battery is "impressive", and dedicates a couple paragraphs to it:

Battery life: Like the iPod, but unlike most cellphones, the iPhone lacks a removable battery. So you can't carry a spare. But its battery life is excellent. In our tests, it got seven hours and 18 minutes of continuous talk time, while the Wi-Fi was on and email was constantly being fetched in the background. That's close to Apple's claim of a maximum of eight hours, and far exceeds the talk time claims of other smart phones, which usually top out at five and a half hours.

For continuous music playback, again with Wi-Fi on and email being fetched, we got over 22 hours, shy of Apple's claim of up to 24 hours, but still huge. For video playback, under the same conditions, we got just under Apple's claim of seven hours, enough to watch four average-length movies. And, for Web browsing and other Internet functions, including sending and receiving emails, viewing Google maps and YouTube videos, we got over nine hours, well above Apple's claim of up to six hours.

In real life, of course, you will do a mix of these things, so the best gauge might be that, in our two-week test, the iPhone generally lasted all day with a typical mix of tasks.
That aligns with my experience pretty closely.

Well I've never had the battery die on me yet.I charge every night, I haven't listened to music extensively (over 10 minutes +) or watched videos though. I do use Safari(Edge + Wi-Fi), Google maps, pictures, and everything else hella a lot too.

The closest it got to dieing was when i was at a party and I had to take it out to answer a call which then everyone noticed and all the girls went on their MySpace's, and ect. It gave me a warning about being under 10% battery left.

Another thing, this thing is such a freaking attention whore. :lol This girl I know has one and I went over her house and the first thing shes said to her parents "Anthony has an iPhone" and the whole family rushed over and played with it :lol

Mine too. I took my phone off the charger Sunday morning... I didn't use it heavily today, but it's at about 90% or so right now (wifi on). Geminii, if you've got that kind of battery life now you should make an appt. at the Genius Bar.

Though a friend of mine is also experiencing kinda lackluster battery life. But definitely not the 2 hours that you apparently are.

I played with one for the first time yesterday.

Holy shit. :lol

I'm already pretty ****ing convinced: enough to even sell the phone I JUST got last month, use ithat money to switch to AT&T, and buy an iPhone. The thing is freakin' rad.

Do it, you know you want to.

About the only thing missing for me now is iChat. Cmon apple give me integrated google talk!

And, another question -- who's bought a case for theirs versus going naked? I've got mine nekkid in me pocket. No scratches have appeared yet.

I am just using an iPod sock for mine. Seems to protect enough and offers about the same amount of coverage as most cases.

Oh, and that "cheat" for sending pictures to other cell phones works fine as long as you don't try sending to another iPhone. *chuckles*

What is the mAh capacity of the iPhone battery? How did you find it out?

Good luck with that. Batteries go bad on all cell phones at an alarmingly high rate after a year or so, but there is a degree of user error that magnifies the issue. If you had the same phone for 3 1/2 years with no battery issues, then you were one of the lucky few. I've gone through 3 RAZR batteries in the past year and a half, and I'm still not happy with it.

Anyway, I think the point is that the battery replacement program is absolutely terrible. I can't believe that Apple is not leveraging resources such as Apple stores, AT&T stores, or even better, the roughly 80 AT&T Device Support Centers that will be operational around the country by the end of the year (there are about 25 open now with more opening every week). Like others have said, you can't expect people to go a day without their phone, much less a week!!! I know a lot of you really, really love your iPhones and there's also the "cult of Apple" thing going on, but to defend Apple on this point is absolutely ludicrous.

I'm not defending them at all. I know for some people this is a big issue. All I'm saying is that for me, it isn't. Part of the reason why it isn't is that I have had no issues with the batteries in my devices over the years. This isn't my first cell phone, nor was the 3 1/2 year old one that I just retired. In fact I'd say this is my fifth or sixth phone, and I've never had issues with batteries on them, so I'm not concerned about this one either. You going through 3 RAZR batteries in a year means that you're either extremely unlucky or their design is just pure shit to begin with.

As for GeMinii's battery issues, you must have a bum battery as well, as I have no problems getting plenty of talk time, mixed in with Internet use on WiFi and EDGE, plus video and audio playback, and e-mail. You mentioned the reviewers, and nearly every review I've read has stated that the battery life is good to great. Some have said they have gotten slightly less than Apple's battery claims while others have said they have gotten slightly more. All depends on the use, but just looking at the responses in this thread should tell you that you're in the minority with your battery issues.

After about a day with the phone, I'm totally in love with it. There really is only one big negative to it for me, and that is the ringtones. It would be nice to be able to pick an MP3 or song in my library as the ringer, but that's only because almost all of the included ringers are terrible. I'm using the default Marimba, and I think the only other passable ones are Harp and Xylophone. Some of these ringers (Bark, Duck, Motorcycle) are just pointless. They might be good for alarms and such, but as ringtones they stink. I do, however, like having the red-alert alarm waking me up in the morning. I also really like Sci-Fi, but can't think of a real use for it. It's too quiet for a ring.

What ringers are you guys using?

I use Old Phone. I pretty much use a variation of that for every phone I've ever owned and I actually like the iPhone rendition a lot. Better than the clones I've found on other phones.

Ok. I've been in vacation in Maine with no access to an AT&T or Apple store, so on the drive home yesterday, I stopped at an Apple store.

It's actually smaller than I thought, which is both good and bad. It's a great screen, but I can't see doing as much web surfing as I initially thought I might. It's too small and too slow (even using the wi-fi). On the plus side, I had no problems typing at all. It's better than any other phone I've used and I actually prefer it to a physical keyboard given the overall design changes of the sytem going with a physical keyboard would have incurred.

However, I got confused by the Apple & AT&T folks I spoke to regarding the family plan, so maybe someone here can help me. What would the minimum monthly charges I'd have for two lines on their service be?

An AT&T salesperson told me it would be:

$59.99 family plan 700 minutes
$20.00 data plan (must be included)
-----------------------------------------
$79.99 for one person

$9.99 for each additional person.

So, that means I'll be faced with a $90 a month bill vs my current $50 a month? (Not including taxes and surcharges). I've got the money, but I don't know if budgetwise I can swallow that given my likely usage.

I'm using the default Marimba ringtone as well. Probably the best they've got on there at the moment. I'd sure like to see them get the ringtones update out for iTunes though.

edit: sonycowboy, I can't help you on the budget plan for sure, but that looks right from what I've been told. Don't have a family plan though.

But if you're surfing is slow even on WiFi, you have some slow ass WiFi. GAF loads in seconds on WiFi at my office and even faster at home. I can see you complaining about speeds on EDGE, as it can be a bit slow there, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with surfing on the iPhone on WiFi.

So how do you maintain/take care of your battery? I know that there are best practices for getting the most of your phone.

The first thing I do with any new device is condition the battery. That means completely charging it before I use it at all. Then, the first charge I always drain it completely and then recharge it completely again.

After that, I charge as needed, but probably once every month or two, I completely discharge it and charge it up again. Pretty simple really. That conditioning process right out of the box is pretty important though.

Apple.com said:
Lithium-ion batteries pack in a higher power density than nickel-based batteries. This gives you a longer battery life in a lighter package, as lithium is the lightest metal. You can also recharge a lithium-ion battery whenever convenient, without the full charge or discharge cycle necessary to keep nickel-based batteries at peak performance. (Over time, crystals build up in nickel-based batteries and prevent you from charging them completely, necessitating an inconvenient full discharge.)

I'm wondering, when did they abandon (if they ever undertook) the whole two battery idea?

The iPhone battery life is pretty good, but the possibility of it running out in an emergency is pretty high.

Therefore I'll probably buy an iPod car charger and perhaps a spare battery pack just in case...

Since most of the iPod accessories work on the iPhone, I have plenty of chargers, and because it can be charged via USB from a computer, I see that being a hand feature as well. I'm not that worried about being somewhere with the charge running low and not being able to charge it.

Hell, the $20 iPod wall charger I picked up a few months back for $5 online is looking like a great investment for when I travel.

This process IMO needs to be seared into the customers foreheads. I'll definitely keep this for future reference. Thanks man.

I believe the point of Shantyman's post above is to point out that these newer batteries aren't suppose to require the conditioning of older ones, so your milage may vary. For me though, I've always had good luck with this method. I honestly have never had issues with batteries on any of my cell phones, mp3 players, game devices, or other items.

I asked this on the previous page but I guess it got totally overlooked, I was thinking about picking one of these up but to use as a portable internet browser at the moment (till my Cellphone contract expires) Does anyone know how long the average battery life for Wifi usage is?

I debated long and hard on Saturday if I should get one and decided not to after talking myself out of it. I figured if I left the house, it was over cuz I'd hit an Apple store and I'd fall in love with it. Turns out since I went out to lunch I decided to go to an Apple store any way after I had spent a few hours talking myself out of it. By the time I got to the store, I figured I was doomed and I'd be walking out with one.

However, it turns out my experience with it completely sucked and I came away empty handed and disappointed. I just had the worst time typing on it. I was hitting the wrong character half the time which meant constant backing up for me. I played with it for a good 15 to 20 min and just was terrible at typing. On top of that, the Edge network was just completely sucking for me. So bad that I have to think it was a fluke. The iPhone said it had full signal and the E was lit up to indicate Edge. Wi-Fi was turned off as well. Yet, it was impossible for me to connect about 95% of the time to anything. I would pull up google maps and it would show me a map but if I clicked on satellite view, it wouldn't be able to grab the data. I'd open up the web browser and come here, but once I got to the thread listing, if I was able to get to the thread listing, I couldn't open any threads. Yahoo would constantly time out. It was just completely underwelming and I refuse to believe the network sucks that badly. I was expecting slow but non responsive most of the time was worrysome. So it makes me wonder, was it just the store? If it was just in the store, how many other pockets in the Bay Area are like that?

At the beginning of the day, I was set on getting an iPhone either now or when it hits a revision but coming out of the store and not being able to type or connect to the Internet has me questioning if I'm going to get one at all. I'm tempted to hit an Apple Store today at lunch to see if this place is different, but I'm very not impressed right now. I even tried two different units to make sure it wasn't the unit itself.

This was based on my experience at the Apple store yesterday (Sunday) before they officially opened. Meaning I don't think there were any contention issues on the network. And the connection strength bar showed as being full.

Anyway, If anybody is using the family plan, please tell me what you're paying ;)

No idea what Internet usage would be like just using it on WiFi and for nothing else, but it should be solid. I think Apple's specs say something like 7 hours for "Internet use" or something of that nature.

Marty: If you're not wowed by the device than maybe it's not for you. However, the keyboard does take some getting use to. Some people pick it up pretty quickly others take awhile. Apple themselves say give it a week. My personal experience was that I was all over the place the first day I had it. Couldn't hit anything accurately and was constantly backing up as well. Now, a little more than a week later, I type much faster and rarely have to correct anything more than my own shitty spelling. :D

As for Edge performance, it does vary by location. I've had some places where it kicks ass, and it's fast and loads pages nicely. I've had a few other locations where it's very slow and pages take forever to load.

This was based on my experience at the Apple store yesterday (Sunday) before they officially opened. Meaning I don't think there were any contention issues on the network. And the connection strength bar showed as being full.

Anyway, If anybody is using the family plan, please tell me what you're paying ;)

$90 a month, for 700 minutes, 2 lines, one iPhone and one Nokia 6632. Only the iPhone has data.

EDIT: EGM, realistically with Wi-Fi I wuld expect about 4 hours of use (not counting standby time).

I'm currently month-to-month with t-mobile. What's the best way to go about canceling that, but moving my number over to AT&T for an iPhone?
