For all you iPhone owners, how is the screen holding up in terms of scratches?

No scratches on the screen... few light scratches on the silver part around the edge though. Nothing that looks crappy though.

Btw, other iPhone peoples... new game popped up that works great on the phone: DGB Games

Right now he just has a small game called Stomp'em but it's easy to figure out and play. I can't wait to see more of these.

Not a single scratch here. All the complaints about the screen getting scratched or dirty pre-release were very overblown. Yes, the screen does get dirty, but it has to be down right filthy before you notice it when the screen is turned on.

Amazing phone. Keeps getting better and better really. I love using the Google Maps on the go, and I'm looking forward to the ringtones options that is rumored to be coming on Wednesday.

iSupply is offering insights into sales of the iPhone. You can read them here:

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/09/04/iphone-was-the-best-selling-smartphone-in-july/

In a nutshell. It was the best selling smart phone for July and the tied with the LG Chocolate as the best selling "features" phone for the month as well. Considering the price difference between the two, that's pretty impressive.

Because of the strong sales, iSupply is now estimating that Apple will sell 4.5 million units by the end of the year. Pretty impressive, although I'm not sure who iSupply is.

I dont have an iphone (yet) but I assume it acts like an ipod. If you register it on your laptop, it should be tied to that pc.

I cant confirm 100% though, but that has been my understanding since I have had ipods since G1.

If that's true, maybe I shouldn't activate it at work, then...

you can activate it anywhere. If you sync the library of your work PC then sync the library of your home PC it will wipe out the work PCs songs. Just set it not to auto-sync to your home PC and you will be fine.

I would like an app to just drag and drop mp3s on it from anywhere, but I am having a hard time finding one!

Just like with the iPod, you can switch which PC it syncs to. So yeah you can sync it from your laptop or at work or whatever, then just re-pair it with your home PC. Should be fine.

My wife is considering getting a iPhone. She already has a plan with Cingular and does not want to get the data plan. Will Cingular let you sign up and keep your existing plan without signing up for data?

I suppose we could always unlock it, but hopefully there is another way to do this as I am assuming unlocking the phone would void the warranty.

You keep your current plan and add like $20 for unlimited data and 500 txt messages. $300 for the remaining 4 gigs is a nice deal.

She doesn't want it then if you have to add something to the plan.

Oh well, lets see how expensive the cracked versions are.

i've heard that you can, but it could be a YMMV thing. Some people have reported that they called ATT (cingular) and complained that they weren't happy with the speed/service of the EDGE on the iphone and they were scaled back to the original basic $39.99 plan.

Posted this in the other thread but probably worth repeating here --

New version of iTunes is out. Ringtones you set with iToner get wiped when you sync. Goes right back to the default tones. I would assume that ringtones now sync with iTunes, where they didn't before. Hopefully they'll have a fix up soon but... :\

Wonder if it wipes the Ringtones put on there via hacks as well. Hrm.

I foresee a back-and-forth battle to stop iTunes ringtones hacks for the next few months, probably until January. Then they'll give up and support free custom ringtones as a big announcement.

Sort of like AOL fighting Trillian.

Uncheck sync ringtones in itunes and re-sync itoner ringtones.

Still wipes 'em whenever you connect back to iTunes regardless if Ringtones is checked or not. You can re-sync with iToner after each iTunes sync, sure, but you lose your ringtone setting on the phone. Not something I'd want to have to do each time.

Hmm... that sucks. I was ready to give iToner some money after yesterday's announcements, but now I'll wait to see how they respond to this. It's such a simple, perfect app for ringtones, so hopefully they get this figured out, but if iTunes is checking with it's own library vs. what you have on your iPhone, it would suck badly, and pretty much put an end to free custom ringtones.

Why not just hack the phone? The ringtones stay and you change your icons and add 3rd party apps, win win.

I put Installer.app on my phone last night to try out the AIM apps. Both Apollo and MobileChat kinda suck, and Apollo crashed my phone, and the whole thing started acting wonky after Installer.app was on there. :\ So...no thanks.

You don't need installer for ringtones, just use ibricker if you are running windows and Ifuntastic for OSX. You only need installer.app to install third party apps over wifi or edge.

Wow! That's ugly!

I'd rather not hack something if it's got the potential to make things unstable. Until they get those tools in better shape, and iPhone apps get more robust, I'm happy not hacking it.

iToner works great and it doesn't get any easier. I downloaded a copy of Audacity as well and cut exactly the clips I wanted for ringtones. Then I just dropped them on. Works like a champ until iTunes 7.4 was released.

I dropped by Ambrosia Software's forums, and two of the programers said that they are working on a fix to the problem now. They said that your ringtones are still there, but that iTunes is over writing the ringtones database file causing the phone to display only the tones that are put there by iTunes itself. They hope to have a fix soon.

*laughing* That was my first thought too!

I dunno if anyone caught this from the other Apple thread, but Sean linked to a program that works like iToner but it's free.

Cocoadex

I have not tried it out myself... but I don't feel like messing around with my iPhone to much, so this will be my option when I stop being lazy.

I tried this yesterday and it was really easy. All you have to do is select your ringtone and then hit the update phone button . I have not sycnched my iPhone since the new iTunes update so I don't know if the ringtones will still work.

so my iphone is activated and everything was pretty much a snap. i've gotta say, i'm very impressed with the EDGE service. websites load much faster than they do compared to my PSP over wi-fi. that's saying a lot for a mobile internet service.

this thing was 110% worth the $299 i spent on it. <3 steve jobs

Just gave that other app, Ringtones from Cocoadex a shot, and it is super easy, just like iToner. But it also suffers the same problem that iToner does when syncing with the new iTunes.

I'm sorry for asking this (this thread is HUGE).... is there a way to unlock an iPhone yet? And can I purchase one straight out from apple's website even though I'm not a AT&T customer? I'm very tempted to get one with the new price drop...

Awesome! That's fine by me! All I could have hoped for! I'll be eying one of those 160 GB iPod Classics I think!

Yeah, it is awesome actually. It's true that technology always drops in price but not $200 after 9 weeks on sale. That was the gut-punch, and this makes me feel better about the whole thing.

Bravo to Jobs. We early adopters knew the risk and yet Apple is still going to placate us. It may only be store credit but it's more than most companies would ever bother to do.

This is a great move on Apple's part. The early adopters will be happy and Apple will make the money back in increased revenue.

All Hail our Lord and Master Steve Jobs! :lol

But seriously, this is what I expect out of Apple. They know how to take care of their customers generally, which made the price cut that much more of a punch in the stones yesterday.

I'm happy as hell at this.

Great news about the discount. If it's soon, I'll make my brother pick me up an AirPort Express that I need to pick up for my dorm.

BTW, if you bought an iPhone and aren't eligible to get any money back from the $200 price drop, Apple's got some reparations.

Better'n nothing, I suppose.

'After reading every one of these emails...'

:lol :lol :lol

Sure you did, Steve. Sure you did.

EDIT: Wow, that was the exact same idea I had yesterday, and I even thought of $100 credit as a reasonable amount. But after I started thinking through who they will determine which customers didnt get credited in other ways, etc, and the opportunity for exploitation, I dismissed it as a route Apple would take. Certainly a good action. I dont supposed anyone who adopted an iphone at that price wll have a problem with $100 to spend on Apple.
