Apple doesn't owe you, or anyone else who bought the iPhone before the price drop a penny. Its not a fucking essential product. Its a gadget. One that noone actually requires. One that people CHOSE to pay $599 for, and DECIDED that it was worth that much to them. Whatever it costs now is completely unrelated to that. They could drop the iPhone to a dollar tomorrow, and they still wouldnt owe you a penny. If you bought it for $2000, same thing. Yes, Im sure the price drop was earlier and steeper than most expected. But that doesnt change anything. Noone was ripped off, because everyone knew what they were paying and what they were getting. You know the real reason iPhone owners are so upset? Jealousy, that others can now pay less to get the same product. Well suck it up. This consumer entitlement has reached ridiculous levels.

Umm... no. I could care less how many people have the iPhone. I've been telling anyone who will listen that it's a great product and that it's highly recommended. I have yet to see one person say "Awww... shit... now everyone is going to have one!"

This jumping to conclusions has reached ridiculous levels.
 
I was in the store again the other night, re-evaluating the iPhone because of the price drop. In about 15-20 mins fiddling with it, I was dumped out of the browser 3 separate times for no apparent reason. I had encountered this previously and I know others mentioned it around launch. Has any solution to this been found/provided?

When you get dumped out, it's because the browser crashed. Perhaps a site you were visitng was causing crashes for some reason, like lots of images or something. The two iPhone updates that they've released so far have helped with stability, but honestly, I can personally count on one hand the number of times this has happened to me since I bought the iPhone at launch.
 
Going to the AT&T store this morning!!!!! Hopefully by the time I get to work I'll be surfing in all the iphones glory.

One question, though: Can you access the Itunes music store from the phone? Wanted to download some free content like podcast and what have you to hold me over until I can transfer some of my music over there tonight when I get home.

Nope. At least not until the update comes out for the WiFi store, which isn't due for a few weeks yet.

GAF has crashed on me several times already. Not a huge deal though, it still blows the doors off any mobile browser I have ever used.

I've heard others say that too, but it was when they were viewing the threads with lots of images, like game screenshots, or the girlie thread.

You don't activate the phone in-store, it's all done in iTunes. So you'd probably have to do it at work or at home.

Not yet. "Later this month." And they haven't said / haven't shown free content like podcasts being downloaded wirelessly in the pictures/video of the interface thus far.

I have no doubts it will get further refined, so like I said, no big deal. I checked my bank statement on it this morning. Good luck doing that with pocket IE, you know?

I get the feeling it won't be there, at least not at first. I would of course love to be wrong.
 
Hi club, just a note that I happened to join you this week, two days before the price cut. That means I'm on my way to the Apple store to reclaim the $215 after tax refund on the difference. That was a nice surprise! It's like free payment for my first three bills! (Sorry for rubbing it in, but then, the money isn't in my pocket yet).

I've decided to forego iFuntastic because it so clearly breaks everything unless you're willing to put a lot of effort into it. I far more prefer using App. Tapp. Installer to jailbreak, get installer on there, and then use iPhoneDisk (a MacFUSE FS) to actually copy over the programs I write and make volume images.

I'll have to say though, when I found out that iTunes 7.4 broke the hacks, I plugged in my iPhone and it seemed to be fine, but I ran the updated App. Tapp. Installer anyway. Beware! Running it when you already have it installed is a sure-fire way to brick your iPhone's install and necessitate a restore. So now I lost the twenty or so calendar items and programs I'd already downloaded with it.

I'm still getting used to the idea of owning a phone that "can crash" or lose events. My old phone sucked ass but it was as real-time a firmware as any, and in three years I never had to retype a calendar event. A bit of a bummer; I just wish the sync operation would make a full image backup of /root each time.

Yeah I get that feeling too. I figure they're starting with music because it's their bread & butter and will, over time, let you buy/download most of the other things offered in the Store.

The hacks introduce some instability to the iPhone. For the most part, mine, which is unhacked, is very stable. I have few crashes at all, so it's generally not an issue.

As for a back-up, I thought iTunes did that when you synced. I seem to recall others having to do a full restore and were surprised to find all their contacts, calendar events, and so on intact.

Welcome to the club! The more the merrier I say! Despite what we've been accused of earlier in this thread! :lol

I did a restore of mine the other night when Installer.app and the AIM applications I'd put on it started to make it act wonky, and it restored everything I'd added except YouTube bookmarks. I didn't lose anything I'd put in the calendar.

But honestly, if you're gonna hack it...be prepared for some heartbreak if some things suddenly don't work when Apple does an update. You're not using the phone as intended so while it's a bummer, just be thankful you can still restore and return your brick to working order.

Really!?

That might be a problem since my job recently cracked down on recreational internet use due to heavy abuse of the privelage. It would torture to sit there with it for 9 hours and not being able to do anything. Theres no number to call or anything!?

Ok..how is it done. Does it require any sort of physical connection to the computer?

I could probably get my supervisor to give me his consent to let me use the net on my break or lunch to activate my phone.

You have to sync the phone with iTunes which starts the activation process, everything happens inside iTunes. You pick your plan and it activates. Took me 5 minutes from start to finish, but I'm an existing at&t customer. I would assume it would take longer if you are a new customer.

Well then it should go smooth. I shot through in no time. It felt strange to activate a phone through iTunes, but it was so painless. It was nice to not have to sit through a customer service call as well.
 
I was a new customer and it only took me about 5 mins too, that included having them port the number over from Verizon. Which didn't activate for about an hour and a half.

Question about changing wallpaper...

Is there a way to add a background to the main menu where all the icons are? Or is that just a std black background?

Is there a site I can DL wallpapers from directly to my iphone?

I ported my number over as well from Verizon and it took abou 15min... I was so happy

No. Until the iTunes Wifi Store comes out, you can't download anything from the web directly to the phone.

I just did exactly that. The iPhone destroys the Blackjack in every conceivable way. The internet browser alone makes the switch worth it.

Now I just need to sell my Blackjack.
 
I have a quick question I was wondering about: Is it possible to disable the phone feature of the iPhone when listening to music/watching photo's etc? I could imagine myself being in an environment where I absolutely don't want to be called, but will be using other feature of the iPhone (like listening to music).

I am now the owner of a sweet little iPhone! :D

My old Motorola was on its last legs....man talk about an upgrade.

To think I was so close to buying a Blackjack a few months before the iPhone came out: not that the BJack is a bad phone, but man I'm really loving this thing.

The thing that bothers me is these people would have whined too if they bought a tech product that had a decrease like this. I suppose it makes them feel better to call iPhone buyers "early adopters" who deserved to get screwed.

Agreed. I'm sure Apple doesn't mind this at all, as the techy crowd will go to town with this, and quit whining about no free ringtones, and the more oblivious consumers will keep right on buying them from Apple.

BTW, I'm using a copy of Audacity to trim down song files to 30 second clips for ringtones. Works great as well.

I hope this stays and wasn't just an oversight on Apple's part. I've been using Garageband to do the trimming and volume controlling. I put together a whole bunch of 'em the night iTunes 7.4 came out and then iToner broke. :\ At least this'll put 'em back on. And I probably will still buy a tone or two just for fun.

Hmm... I'll have to give Garageband another try. I was using it earlier, but was having an issue or two, but it would also save a step or two in the process. GB in general is a great program.

Oh, I should mention that I'm using the iLife 08 Garageband, which exports in MP3 as well ('06 doesn't, I think). And you can do the fades, etc. just like I imagine iTunes will next week.
