So since I think at least a half-dozen or so people on NeoGAF bought iPhones yesterday...what are YOUR impressions of the device? Good/bad? What do you like/not like?

Absolutely marvelous so far. Typing takes about an hour to get used to, but its really pretty good at catching my miskeys

Fine Edge is fast enough to be acceptale in my opinion. Browsing non-stop all day while playing music only drops me to about 33% battery.

Not happy that my corporate Lotus Notes webmail doesn't work (the reply button is a java applet, WTF)

iPhone is great. The Google Maps integration is absolutely stellar -- I love the bookmarks feature. Edge is faster that I thought, but I don't understand why Safari will sometimes switch between vertical/horizontal viewing when I tip the phone, sometimes won't. Other than that, I'm looking forward to spending the weekend adding some of the 3rd party apps...the ringtone one is still broken, right? And it'd be nice to have a Flickr uploader...

Try holding your iPhone upright when you want to switch between landscape and portrait. That usually gets it going for me.

Ringtones actually work in the new iTunes if you just encode the ringtones as AAC and rename them as m4r files. Check out MacRumors for more information on how to do that.

I need to get around to trying some of those 3rd party apps but there aren't really any killer ones out there worth it for me to try.

Hmm...sounds like you've got a plain vanilla setup of LN webmail. They could swap out the java applet fairly easily. Surprised they haven't.

Yeah, same here. The angle of the iPhone in relation to the ground sometimes confuses it for swapping modes.

Also, ringtones work around was posted already, and confirmed to be working well.

IMO, the 3rd party apps REALLY aren't worth it yet (and as mentioned there's a ringtone workaround). Most of the Web 2.0 stuff for iPhone is a lot better. Like --

I think this is intentional, otherwise if you were holding the iPhone while standing and turned, the orientation would flip. Tilting it vertical tells the phone you're flipping the device, not rotating your body.

And CJ, I love this phone. It is already the best smartphone I have ever owned. I would love to see cut and paste, but other than that, I don't have any nits to pick.

Making your own ringtones is STUPID easy now. Take and AAC and rename the file from m4a to m4r and you're done. You can do fancy shit (like me) and crop 30 seconds out of a song in GarageBand and do some fades in/out. Makes them sound really great. Then just export to disk and do the m4r rename, and import back into iTunes. BOOM! as Steve would say, it's that fucking easy.

I'm using the chorus/bridge from the new Jimmy Eat World as my ringer now! The only thing is, if I'm listening to that song and I get a call, I'm going to get really fucking confused for a second.

Edit: A Flickr uploadr would be nice, but for now you can always email your photos to Flickr direct from the phone. That's what I do.

Beejive is awesome. Probably my most used "app".

I'm still concerned about not being able to receive calls when the EDGE is constantly being used. I don't suppose Apple could release a fix for this? (i.e. use one of the EDGE channels to monitor voice instead of data)

It would be great if they'd buck up and release a real version of iChat for the phone. My old flip phone did a Java AIM that kept me logged in and still gave me the ability to receive voice calls. Maybe we'll see this later on. But they need to do it. In the meantime Beejive's good for quick IMs.

I'm rockin' no screen protector or case. Doesn't really need one. I've carried the phone in a pocket since launch. Occasionally I'd accidentally throw my keys in on top of it but it never actually left any scratches. Then again I don't make a habit of putting anything else in the pocket with the phone, just as a precaution.

Apple doesn't owe you, or anyone else who bought the iPhone before the price drop a penny. Its not a fucking essential product. Its a gadget. One that noone actually requires. One that people CHOSE to pay $599 for, and DECIDED that it was worth that much to them. Whatever it costs now is completely unrelated to that. They could drop the iPhone to a dollar tomorrow, and they still wouldnt owe you a penny. If you bought it for $2000, same thing. Yes, Im sure the price drop was earlier and steeper than most expected. But that doesnt change anything. Noone was ripped off, because everyone knew what they were paying and what they were getting. You know the real reason iPhone owners are so upset? Jealousy, that others can now pay less to get the same product. Well suck it up. This consumer entitlement has reached ridiculous levels.

You're not talking to me, right? I didn't get one.

What did you guys end up doing about earphones?

I love my Shure's, but I love the mic feature on the new buds as well. Should I buy the Shure adapter or get a whole new set of buds?

Agreed with BeeJive. I used it for a few hours a night while on vacation though, that was great. Much better than paying for the hotel's wifi access.

I'm not rocking a case or protector either. It's still in tip-top shape. I'm looking for a case, but if I get one it'll be something I can take it in and out of easily. Too bad everything like that clips on to your belt... I don't want anything wrapped around the phone or attached to it. Everything just makes it look ugly as hell.

Is there a way to get the Web 2.0 stuff to show up as a button on the front?

There's a website that does everything for you. Well, by that I mean it lets you provide a title, provide the URL, and select an icon for the app and it'll dynamically generate a .app file for you. You'll still have to hack it onto the iPhone though and add it to the Springboard yourself.

I don't remember the name of the site though :\. I tried googling it but nothing came up so you might have to dig around for it. I found it through either tuaw or the macrumors iPhone forums.

I'll have to track that this weekend :)

hmmm I must be doing something wrong...

I take an m4a file and change it to an m4r and then re add it to itunes. I go to the ringtones tab and I sync it with my phone, and when I go to Settings, sounds, ringtone, I dont see the song I just sent over....

Are you just trying to sync a full song as a ringtone?

I haven't tried doing this yet so can't say for sure, but I'm guessing there's a size/length limit. Try and make it 30 seconds or under and see if that works.

If its a correct m4r file it wont 'add' to itunes, (you wont see it in the library) you'll only see it in the iphone>ringtones part.

Ive got it to work on many ringtones now, I just wish someone would figure out how to delete them from the list.

On the Mac, you can just go into the iTunes folder hierarchy and they're in iTunes Music / Ringtones. Or at least, mine are. I'd imagine you can just delete 'em out of the folder and they're gone...right?

If you delete the source file, it still stays in the ringtones list just says it cant find it :/

Picked up one this morning!! and Boy, were those the longest 9 hours i've ever spent at work. Downloading Itunes to activate now!!

I was lucky, they only had one 4gb left, a guy already getting assistance who was buying a 8GB model for his sister was contemplating getting a 4GB for himself..

Cha-ching! Got my $213 refund from the store just now. While in line, one more guy came in for the refund and a total of EIGHT iPhones sold (total time there couldn't have been longer than 10 minutes).

And to the guy above, yeah, I used the thing virtually non-stop all day and ended the day at around 30% capacity (including a flight with 2 hour time change, making it like a 14 hour workday).

Hey All, if you are running a mac the new version of itoner is out...

New in iToner 1.0.1: iTunes 7.4 compatibility, along with other fixes and enhancements.

Just thought I would let you know... sucks they dont have a windows copy

Using this phone is like waking up on a summer day, to the fresh smell of tulips & ocean breezes. Holy fuck, how the hell did I ever get along without a phone like this. Amazing.. Simply amazing.

My productivity at work is going to drop to the negative.. WOW!!!

edit: wow nm it doenst work get an error message "cannot be played on iphone"

that was fast apple :lol

Ok, just got a 4Gig iPhone, I'm having some trouble with it...so hopefully someone in here can help me out.

First off, where is my service? I activated it at around 11am today, I talked on it with two people before 3pm, I went to work, and it just chilled near me all day. on my lunch break I tried to set up my voice-mail and BOOM. Dead. I could surf the net through WiFi, but I couldn't send texts, I couldn't make or receive calls, NOTHING. Did I somehow wang the antennae or something, or did AT&T fuck me up? Is this some kind of normal activation black-out and tomorrow all will be fine or do I need to jump on a land-line and raise some hell?

Second question involves internet. I thought that the iPhone used the unlimited data plan to surf the net through the phone "line"? So far I've only been able to access the internet when I'm near WiFi hotspots. Is that normal and I'm just a retard, or have I simply not set up the proper way to get online? I was under the impression that I could be lost somewhere in Texas and I'd whip out my iPhone, Google Map my location and find a way out of there. Not so?

Other than those two beginners hiccups, this thing is incredible. It's so sleek, and fun to use. Syncing it with my address book and calendar was a breeze. And the attention it gets is amazing. :D :D

You're just getting no service on it? No bars? Does it say "No Service" at the top left or do you have half a bar? Or, does it have an airplane icon?

Do you have the "E" in a square directly to the left of the AT&T? Or no?

It doesn't say "No Service", but it looks like there's no bars. Or, well, I guess the first bar is up a little more than the others, so I guess that's half a bar? But no, I don't have the airplane icon.

Nope, no E. Just a line of flat service bars. I'm on a family plan so I just added the $20 data plan to it for my iPhone. AT&T and Apple's website say that entitles me to unlimited web/emails... maybe it has to do with my lack or service. :(

Also, now, I'm sitting at my computer, using my iMac, and my iPhone can't even connect to the WiFi network it was JUST ON while I was in another room.

*sigh* I thought I was tech savvy...

Sounds like you have a bum phone. If it doesn't clear up by tomorrow, I'd be on a landline with AT&T or back at the store I bought it from. I'm assuming your previous phones haven't had these types of problems when used in the same locations, right?

Nope. I'm staying with my folks right now and their phones are getting perfect service. While at work I used a coworker's phone to try and call mine, and it went straight to "The AT&T customer you're trying to reach hasn't set up their voice-mail account" message. My phone didn't even ring. I don't get how I was talking on it before work, and then I went to set up my voice-mail and it just took a big shit.

So, if it doesn't work tomorrow, do I send it back to Apple, or do I take it back to the AT&T store I bought it from? [Edit, never mind, you answered that already. D'oh!]

Not having a phone is blowing my asshole right now. :(

Thanks for the help, though.

Edit 2: And now it's browsing the web again. Oy. And to think I have my Moto RYZR sitting right here, lifeless because its little SIMcard soul is trapped within my bricked iPhone.

Also, since I'm ranting in an edit, I was very pissed at work to find my earphone jack doesn't fit into the iPhone's hole. I hate Apple's earbuds. >:(

Belkin makes a $10 adapter that'll fix that. Available at any Apple Store, or online.
