Question about battery life.

Charged it full and purposely tried to kill the battery.

Talked for about 20 minutes, surfed(Edge) for around 3 hours, listened to music for about 2 hours, and it was idle for another 2-3 hours..Plugged it up shortly after getting the 20% warning.

Normal? Below average? Exceptional? Piss Poor? what...

Pretty normal, except you should have let the battery completely drain, or at lest until you got the 10% warning.
Also, try keeping the wifi set to "off" while not browsing the net, it'ss increase your battery life.

I would rather just accept the odd scratch then put one of those ugly rubber cases on my phone. It defeats the purpose of having such a sleek clean phone to wrap a case around it.

Totally agree... a major selling point of the iPhone/iPods are how sexy and thin they are and that's ruined by sticking it in some ugly and bulky case.

With that said I finally got around to putting on the Crystal Film set on my iPhone - it's excellent. I didn't buy it cause I was worried about the screen scratching (though that's certainly a benefit) but mainly because this thing makes it much easier to wipe off finger prints. And I also prefer the feel of it with this on - doesn't make the screen any less responsive, it fact this makes it feel nicer to touch IMO.

You get a set of two plastic sheets that fit nicely over the screen (the ear piece and home button part is already cut out). Installation is extremely easy, it's got some kind of static cling technology which is really cool - doesn't leave a sticky substance or anything. If you want to take it off for whatever reason (or to place it better), just use a small piece of scotch tape to lift it up off the screen. Once it's on you can't even tell, it's pretty much invisible and impossible to notice. Great product.

You no longer have to drain the battery completely before charing. Newer batteries don't require that.

That said, I charged my iPhone completely before using it the first time, then drained it completely before recharging it again. Just to be sure.

So I know a lot of you are happy using iToner for ringtones... Well I asked the company if they had a version for Windows and they said NO, but they did point me to this site...

http://www.efksoft.com/

It looks cool, but I am not sure about it... Has anyone ever seen this program before? tried it?

Let me know

Wow! That looks pretty cool. Seems to have the same functionality that Apple is promising in iTunes once ringtones become officially available.

Speaking of which, I wonder if they're going to have any pre-made ringtones that you can buy for 99 cents once the feature is opened up.

I'm totally in love with my iPhone. It was my first day of work since having it activated, and damn did time fly by. It seriously felt like I had just gotten there once 9pm rolled around(got there at about 11:45am--shift begins at 12pm). I was listening to music the entire day and surfing the net for a good portion of it as well. I would suggest this phone to ANYONE, but especially for those who have a good bit of down time at their job, but their company limits, prohibts, or highly restricts recreational web browsing, this is a fucking must buy product. The realization that you have pretty much the entire internet as you know it from using a PC at your finger tips via a mobile phone is pretty great when it hits you. I was doing the same stuff I do from home with my iPhone. The browser is AMAZING, and the touch controls & the perspective tilting seem totally natural. Last night when I went to bed I ended up staying up for another 2 hours watching vids & browsing, even though I had a fully capable computer w/ highspeed interent a room away.:lol :lol

The only slight problem is where I sit at work causes me to get an intermittent signal which in turn causes Edge to lag a bit a times, but when i have a strong signal the thing ZOOMS. I got a bit excited because i picked up a wireless singal when I entered the building, but I guess it had a firewall up because I couldn't connect to it.

People who call this phone overpriced are fuckin nuts. I feel like I got the deal of the century snagging it for $299, I would've been happy with my purchase I had gotten it at $499(I feel dumb for convincing myself it wasn't worth it at that price, but I'm glad i ended up waiting!)

I might actually update my phone for this. I hope installer will work for it still though

I'm in love with my iPhone at the moment.

I really hope Apple gives us the option of using the iPod Touch dock. It looks like the Tiger dock and it looks way better than the current iPhone dock.

If Apple ever releases a flash video/flash media up date for the iphone the little thing will be UNSTOPPABLE!!

Rumored to be coming, since there is a lightweight version of Flash available on other phones.

is there a list of iphone supported games or something like that? the ones you use in Safari? also is there a good video converter for the iphone that is free?

thank god for this unlocking software. I'm actually halfway interested in the iPhone now, since i'm not confined to Cingular's horrific service. Why Apple chose Cingular over every other carrier still astounds me.

Because Verizon turned Apple down.

Don't you live in Richmond? I get great service here.

They went to Verizon first, and Verizon turned them down. I switched from Verizon to AT&T when i bought the iPhone and haven't regretted it a bit. The service has been great so far. Thanks to unlocking, you are now able to choose between AT&T or the shitty T-Mobile service. And you won't get to use Visual Voicemail if you go that route, plus you'll have to hack YouTube to get it to work.

But yeah, thanks for unlocking software.

When I used to have Cingular, I'd randomly get dropped calls while walking amongst the city. Whether it be due to tall buildings or whatever, I found that problem lessened when I moved to T-Mobile (Last year) and I never dropped with my Verizon phones. And when you need to call Cingular/ATT, my two experiences with them (Once for covering an insured phone and again to cancel service) are enough to persuade me that other horror reports of Cingular customer service are true.

I am a bit hurt at missing out on visual voicemail. I'm settled with my WinMo6 phone though, since it handles YouTube/Google Video/Xtube/BeastTube perfectly and does quite a bit more.

I really liked my Verizon service. No complaints at all, and AT&T has been equally as good for the few months that I've had it. When I had T-Mobile, for a hear, it was terrible. I fled back to Verizon as soon as my contract was up. There were times with T-Mobile where i wouldn't have service inside a building. Or it would just drop randomly all the time.

I think you can find horror stories about every carrier if you look hard enough. But I have no complaints at all about AT&T thus far, and I've used it not only in the city that I live in, but several other places around the country too since I switched for the iPhone. I think a lot of the hate for their network is overblown. But of course, YMMV.

Indeed. No problems with AT&T here either, and I'd read awful things about their service in my area before I bought the iPhone. But it's been nothing but great so far.

Dude, can you tell me how to do this? I've searched for it and can't find a reliable website with clear instructions (changing the SpringBoard background).

Ok, been using my iPhone for about half a week, and it's just impossibly cool. Browsing the internet while sitting in the guard house at my boring second job? Using it like a mini stereo while I go out on foot patrol? Amazing.

But the iPhone totally proved itself to me on Saturday night. I was driving home from work and got a text message from a girl inviting me to a party. Not knowing how to get to her address, I opened up Google Maps and bam!, instant directions. Flawless victory!

HOWEVER, I have one MASSIVE problem with it and that's the ring tone debacle that's going on right now. I can understand Apple needs to keep the music overlords happy, but there's a line. I write my own music and so do many of my friends. I'd like to have their songs as their ring tones (as I did on my RYZR) but there is NO WAY to do this. I also used to have sound clips from TV shows ("I don't care about your tight-ass country club, you freak bitch!") and various recordings ("Uh oh, your mom is calling!") on my old phone. Whenever I'd get a text message, my phone would sound off like a Transformer changing modes. These are things that can't and never will be available on iTunes. That is a MONSTER flaw and something Apple needs to address immediately. It is a crime that I can't have my friend Dan saying "Admiral Action of the USS Jackson" when he calls me. It's also ROBBERY that I have to pay for a song I already own AGAIN to use it as a 30-second ring tone.

Also, not really a problem but just a question, what's up with the iPhone not taking video? Is that something that can be added via software update or is that a hardware thing for iPhone 2.0? I don't see why my 2mp RYZR camera could take 30fps videos but my 2mp iPhone camera can't.

Calm down skippy. If you have read the past few pages of this thread, you'll find there are several ways to get your own ringtones onto the iPhone. Not a problem at all. I currently am using several ringtones that I created myself from songs in my library that had nothing to do with music purchased from iTunes.

As for video, who knows. They might be able enable video in an update, but we don't know enough about the camera to be sure. You're not the only one to ask about it, but personally I could care less. I'd rarely use video regardless.

BTW, it now looks like you can clear out those ringtones from your library that were disabled with the update from 7.4 to 7.4.1. When the phone is connected, you'll see "Ringtones" listed under your library, and you can delete them from there. I haven't tried it, but I'll bet that will remove them from the sync list as well.

Canceling my iPod Touch preorder for reals. Probably going to walk over to the at&t store and grab an 8GB.

Any downside to buying at an ATT store instead of Apple? I hate waiting for products (hence my massive waffling on the Touch).

No real difference... I purchased at the apple store, only because you use itunes to activate, so there was no reason to walk into an AT&T store...

Nope. Can't think of any downside to buying at an AT&T store. They'll just hand you the box and you'll head out to activate it through iTunes.

Well Flash Lite is very different from Flash Player. With MAX coming up in less than 30 days, perhaps we will see some iPhone goodness soon enough....

anyone else having this problem with ringtones?

I am just changing the file name from .m4a to .m4r

The ringtones show up just fine in itunes in the ringtone dir, even when I plug in my iphone they all show up on the sync list.

The problem is if I sync more than one they all show up as the same ringtone.

So say I have 5 different ringtones when I sync I will have 5 copies of one of the ringtones and the other 4 are not on my phone.

What am I doing wrong?

The file's should be .m4a files that you change the name to .m4r files under the old process. Now you have then change them back to .m4a after you've changed them .m4r or use something like iToner.

Aren't .mp4 files video?

How did you make your ringtones? I made mine in Garageband and when I stuck 'em in iTunes the ID3 tags were all the same (and different from what I'd named the files). Perhaps that's what's happening here?

you know the one original issue I had with the youtube version on iphone was that there was not alot of videos to choose from, but I tell ya, I have been searching so many things on it, and I have been pleasantly surprised that each thing I search for has had a result come back. I just wish that on some of the videos, the volume was a little louder...

that's such a rip off.

my razr came with software that lets me do that same thing for free with any song I choose.

Mine didn't. Telus crippled my Razr so that you can't choose a song as a ringtone. I had to hack it with phone tools from motorola and delete 2 files to get it to work.

...And there are quite a few ways to make free ringtones for the iPhone too. Honestly though, compared to what most carriers charge for ringtones, $1.98 isn't *that* bad. And with this you can select any part of a song (up to 30 seconds) for your tone, which most other mobile carriers don't let you do.

I'm getting a little tired of people coming in here and bashing the iPhone on ringtones, when a little research will show that there are plenty of tools available already to do free ringtones as well.

Get over it already.

Amen!

I am glad it is a part of itunes now and with just a little know how you can use what ever ringtones you want without hacking.

I have put my on ringtones on a Sony S710, RAZR (1st version with no mp3 support), Blackberry Pearl and Samsung Blackjack and the iphone is not that difficult.

The hardest part is editing the mp3 into the clip you want and if you buy the ringtone itunes will do it for you.

Why isn't there a proper software unlock public yet? WHY??

Because the phone has only been out a little over two months?

Speaking of Ringtones, I was editing one Garage Band and when I export it I end up with something like 5 seconds of silence on the end. Anyone else having this issue or know how to resolve it? It's easy enough to shave it off in Audacity, but was hoping to use just one program for making tones.

Move the "end of song" marker (the purple arrow/line) right to the end of your ringtone. Then it'll export without the five seconds of silence.
