Oh i know, i have contemplated that. but the go phone i have now sucks so bad and i was going to get the ipod touch anyway until i realized for 100 more i can get a different phone.

I'm sure it's probably been mentioned in this thread multiple times before but that headphone jack on this thing sucks ass. I can't use any of the headphones I own on it.

Also there is no homepage button on safari right? I'm really missing that...

Yes what you posted was accurate on prices. Perhaps add in a carrying case for 30 bucks.

Awesome. So there wont be any other mandatory charges besides that?

Also, i should be able to get the phone at an AT&T retail store right?

I'm pretty sure my first month of service cost a little bit extra. After that though it was $66 per month though, yes.

And it you can purchase Applecare protection plan to extend the warranty another year (it costs 70 bucks I think).

I'm thinking of buying an iPhone tomorrow, but I already have AT&T service with my existing phone. Does that mean I don't have to pay the first service plan and activation fee, or do I have to do those as well?

No activation fee for ya....I did the same thing on launch day, all that was added was the $20 data plan

In the future, can my mother, who also has AT&T/cingular, add on to my plan? That way she only needs to pay the additional phone charge? Is that possible or do i need to get a different plan?

It's possible. The way it's structured you can pay $30 more to add her to your plan ($10 for two phones sharing minutes on the same plan, plus $20 for her iPhone Data Plan).

If I switch my plan down to the lower bill will it reset my plan and start over?

Not sure. They may actually zap you with a charge for it. Always start low and work up if you need to for just this reason.

I don't think so. I am considering switching my plan to one with more minutes and the site said it doesn't go into effect until the next billing cycle, so I'm assuming it works the same way if you downgrade.

I can change my plan online?

Just got my iphone, its hacked, but only because my contract with US Cellular doesn't run out till Nov. Sooo it will do for now...I wanted to ask if anyone knew if there is a good app for when you have to many items on the desktop? like something to make it scroll down? The one I currently have has you hold your finger at the bottom right corner and you browse thru them, kinda like in Windows Vista. Just want something simple, and scroll down, but also whenever I'm doing something else I'll accidently trigger it because something I want to touch is on that right side corner.

Also, is it worth going to Cingular/AT&T or going to Tmobile?

What you want my friend is Summerboard. Look for it on the Installer.app. It does exactly what you are referring to.

Boo... bought my phone but can't activate it. I either get an error message connecting to the itunes store, or I got in, entered my existing AT&T account information, then during the "verifying your info with AT&T" I got an error message saying, "iPhone activations are not available now. Try again later." :( Is this normal? Any suggestions other than just wait it out?

I had a similar problem but once I updated my version of Itunes and the iphone firmware update it activated and I stopped getting the message.

Btw I'm not sure if it's AT&T's coverage, the phone, or a combination of both, but this thing kind of blows as an actual cell phone.

Fortunately I'm not a big talker on cell phones so its less of an issue but the drop in quality from most phones I've had is pretty noticeable so far.

My friend is importing a bunch of iPhones but we don't have EDGE in The Netherlands (phased out last July :lol). If I get one, will I cry bitter tears because I miss out on the best iPhone feature or is it not a big deal? Do you iPhone users use EDGE a lot?

Yes. You can go to the Cingular/ATT Wireless portal and change your plan right there. Be aware that changes you make to your plan take place on the FOLLOWING billing, not the current one. So if you're trying to change to get extra minutes/texts/etc. ignore what the rep tells you - it doesn't come into effect until your next billing cycle.

Its a combination of the two. THe antenna in the iPhone is a it weaker than most. AT&Ts network is generally spotty and shitty in a lot of places and it drops a LOT of calls (not sure why TMobile was so excellent at this by AT&T sucks so bad at it).

They don't do like cable and charge you for the downgrade - it simply doesn't take place until the next billing cycle.

Hey does anyone know if I can use the iphone with those ipod speakers that are out there? The ones that act like a dock for the ipod and you can set the alarm to wake up to itunes songs or AM/FM on the clock/speaker/dock thing... You know... something like this...

You might want to look around on iLounge to see if anybody's talking about this particular device with respect to the iPhone. Some of these work but give you horrible static, others work only in Airplane mode (i.e. no phone or wifi service), and others don't work at all.

Also, Apple issued a statement to unlockers today:

Apple today released the following statement:
Monday September 24, 4:40 pm ET

CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed. Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (www.itunes.com), later this week. Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone's warranty.

Yeah, I coming from a Sidekick 2 most recently and while the data services sucked and were slow the phone performance beats my iphone by a huge margin....

The only programs I want to keep are iFlickr and Springboard. :\

Also, what idiots are bringing their phones in for service w/ 3rd party apps installed + unlocked? Jesus. :lol I'm a pro-iPhone hacking guy and I would never think to do that.

Is it more likely they're releasing this statement as a "Bad unlockers; bad!" type of thing because AT&T wants them to look like they care or because they're going to legitimately combat unlocking the iPhone?

I'm assuming it's because dumbasses keep bringing their unlocked/hacked iPhones in for help and whine when they don't get it. You'd think the people who are smart enough to know what unlocking is and perform the procedure would know better.

Apple's going to turn the screws this week. Man, there is going to be blood in the streets when unlocked phones start bricking. Should be epic.

It's going to be interesting to see what the update does, and if the "many new features" include any that weren't on the phones debuted in the UK/Germany/France last week. That'd be a nice surprise.

But yes, if one of the by-products of the updates is the bricking of unlocked phones, that's gonna hit a lot of people where it hurts.

Is upgrading firmware optional? Can you use itunes without upgrading?

Yes it is optional. You'd just have to click "no" when iTunes asks you to update the firmware every time you connect the phone to it. But you will be unable then to take advantage of any of the features offered by the new firmware (until the new one's hacked, that is).

Most importantly, I want whatever bugfixes are in the update, especially for Safari. I want the Wifi store too, even if it's just to browse for new music while I'm waiting somewhere.

And yeah, I have a feeling the brick hammer is going to drop. That announcement was pretty ominous.

If they drop the brick hammer hard the first time out, it'll discourage the casuals by word-of-mouth. I wonder if that's going to end up being the approach, then. Lay the smackdown on the first real update. I'm also curious to see how specific the bricking will be -- installer.app kids or those unlocking outside AT&T. Right now, honestly, my iPhone is so much better than every phone or portable device I've ever used, I'd be totally happy with it staying how it is, and I really mean that. It'd suck to miss out going forward, but it does so much that nothing else even comes close -- it really is good enough for me. I mean, what other phone even has substantial firmware updates? I'm used to it at this point.

Odd question... when browsing GAF on my iPhone, is there anyway to highlight spoiler text so I can read it? When I try to, it only scrolls to the left or the right in the browser.

Wow guys! Apple is going to release an update which adds more ways for you to throw more money their way!
Fuck that, i'm going to uninstall all my apps just so i can buy Corinne Bailey Rae's album from Starbucks......wirelessly!!!

Wow. This last 2 weeks have been like a rollercoaster. And the ride keeps on giving!

Basically, I've been a gadget hacking whore for some time and, as soon as I get something that can be modified, I'll do it. When one of my friends got a hold of an iPhone, I knew that it was THE gadget. I'm leaving to NY in 2 weeks. My original plan was to buy an iPhone. Alas, reality continued to betray me.

The decision to buy either a Touch or an iPhone depends of whether the firmware version in the iPhone is hackeable or not. How likely is that the iPhones sitting in the Apple Store shelves in 2 weeks have 1.02 or the dreaded 1.1.1 firmware? If the firmware is 1.1.1 and there's no way to at least " fake activate" the phone, I'm buying a Touch.

Fellow hackers of the world, you have 1 weeks and a half, give or take, to make my decision. Please, I really want at least fake activation by October 8. I know it's possible. Don't let me down!

Yeah, because nobody at Apple has ever been on the Internet.

Is it possible to download 1.02 firmware outside of itunes? I'm gonna buy a iphone this weekend, but if the next firmware launches before I do, i'm screwed..right?

Odd question #2: When browsing the web on the iPhone with Safari, is there a way to manage bookmarks and move a bookmark into an existing folder? I can reorder the list of bookmarks by drag and dropping the arrow, but I can't seem to drop a bookmark into a folder.

Nope. Very strange quirk.

If Apple starts bricking the harmless hackers- the will find a bigger shitstorm than that which they navigated after the $200 price drop. There are a LARGE number of 3rd party Apple developers who are greatly protesting this and they will be extremely vocal if their phones (because many of these guys are building apps for the iPhone) get bricked after the update.

The one thing that is interesting is that it is quite unlikely that the update will actually brick a phone which has additional applications.... though the guys doing installer.app went a similar route to jailbreak the iPhone. I'm on those IRC channels and there is a storm brewing... really really brewing. Apple could totally fuck up a good thing.
