I'm traveling today and this is the first time I get to bring the iPhone with me. So far it rocks. Free wifi at the airport and I encoded a whole bunch of tv shows with isquint. Just hope my battery lasts the whole trip!

Motherfucker! In the whole time itunes has been out I have been able to resist paying for a mp3. Since the itunes store on the iphone came out I have downloaded no fewer than 80 songs to this bitch! ahhhh someone reset my itunes pasword plz.

Is there an alternative to iTunes? I had some music on my old mp3 player, and so I added it to the library, and then Sync'd it to my iPhone. Now everytime I sync, iTunes complains because I no longer have my mp3 player plugged in. What more, there's a bunch of dead entries in my Library. So I deleted them....and went on to Sync some videos.... the result? The music is deleted from my iPhone. Why Apple, why?

I'm confused. What? Everytime you sync your iPhone, iTunes complains...with what message, exactly.

What more, there's a bunch of dead entries in my Library. So I deleted them....and went on to Sync some videos.... the result? The music is deleted from my iPhone. Why Apple, why?

Right. Because you deleted your music from the iTunes library and then told iTunes to sync with the phone. Why were there dead entries in your Library?

I thought I was pretty clear.

The files in my library are those from my old mp3 player. I had to put them in my library to get them onto my iPhone. Now that they are on my phone, I don't see any need to use my old mp3 player. But since they are in the library, then when iTunes syncs, it complains because my player isn't plugged in. Removing them from the library deletes the files from my phone..

In iTunes, go into Preferences, Advanced, bring up the General tab. Is there a check mark next to "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library"? If not, you'd have to have your MP3 player connected in order to sync those dead-linked songs. Easy solution -- check the box that copies files to the iTunes Music folder when adding to library, re-add the music from your MP3 player, re-sync your iPhone, and they'll be there.

That box is unticked. The files are on my iPhone from when I sync'd them with the mp3 player connected. Now that it isn't connected however, the files appear as dead. Removing them for the library in turn removes them from my iPhone. Leaving them causes a missing file problem when the phone tries to see if they've changed.

Note : I don't want the files on my computer :P I want them on my iPhone, only.

Then have your MP3 player and your iPhone hooked up at the same time whenever you sync.

OR, plug your MP3 player back in, re-add the music to iTunes (still with the option unchecked so you're not copying them to your computer). With your MP3 player still plugged in, plug in the iPhone. Sync. Then uncheck the box on your iPhone options that'd sync the music library. That should keep the music on your phone even when synced. Should. Not entirely sure though as I've never had to do it that way.

Question time. Coverflow orients itself depending on whether you have the home button to the right or the left, but I can't seem to get video podcasts and other videos to do it, is it supposed to be able to? It seems to force me to put the iphone in landscape so that the home button is on the right. This is somewhat annoying since the way I hold it in that orientation frequently means I cover up the speaker with my palm. If I could hold it the other way the speaker would be in the upper left and it wouldn't be an issue. Is there a setting for this somewhere?

Short answer: no.

So I just got one, whoo hoo!! Two questions. Can I drag and drop songs from my itunes library to the iphone? I could do this with my Nano but it seems like you have to sync it with the iphone. And can you use gmail chat on this baby?

iPhone v1.1.1 firmware gets the Jailbreak treatment

http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/08/iphone-v1-1-1-firmware-gets-the-jailbreak-treatment/

For all you fanatics on the edge of your seat over the iPhone v1.1.1 hacking situation, there's some good news on the horizon. According to Erica Sadun -- one of the soldiers heading up the fight to break Apple's stranglehold -- the iPhone / iPod touch dev team have indeed managed to Jailbreak the new update. Apparently, the general-use tool hasn't made a showing yet, but baby steps have been taken, and the goods are sure to follow. So what can you expect? Third party apps are working, but will probably need to be recompiled due to the new frameworks, Springboard won't recognize DisplayOrder.plist (included apps now seem to be hard-coded into the Springboard app), you can activate the phone with third-party workarounds, and the Mobile Terminal and BSD suite work, as well as ARM-compiled command-line utilities. Of very interesting note: Erica says that the new firmware references both Nike and a radio, and that the devs are taking up a fund to buy a cake and deliver it to Apple, courtesy of "the Crazy Ones." She says the Jailbreak isn't "ready for prime time," and based on this info we tend to agree, but if you really want the full scoop, truck over to TUAW and check out the info for yourself.

No drag and drop of tunes, which disappoints me, but I simply made an "iPhone" playlist and dropped all my songs that I wanted into that playlist, then checked the box to sync that playlist.

As for Google chat, check out JiveTalk Mobile:

Well.... what they don't say there is that the process isn't protected and isn't yet brickfree :)

Yeah, I know, but it's encouraging progress. I'm starting to get itchy about remaining on the older firmware because dealing with glitchy 3rd party apps was fine when they were being update, but all but a few have been totally ditched since the upgrade.

I dunno, I'm seeing an increasingly large number of applications and themes show up in the installer app.

I use Pocket Divx Encoder on raw .vobs to increase color saturation/brightness/decibel level/adjust cropping on videos, and then use the old, non-spyware-infected version of Videora to convert that to mp4. It'd be nice to just use one app for video conversion, but Divx encoders are so much more comprehensive and usable than the mp4 encoders out there that I'd rather just use an extra step in the encoding process.

By the way, anybody stream their music library to the phone? I'm using TVersity and it only lets me stream one track at a time. I want to stream whole albums, so that pisses me off. Any suggestions?

Can someone point me in the direction of some good cases?

Honestly, I was worried about using mine without a case but since all of the cases look heinously lame and ruin the aesthetic of the phone completely, I decided to forgo using one and so far I have no regrets. Really, the phone is quite sturdy. Mine is in my pocket all day, everyday and it has no scratches. I would only buy a case if you're going to be storing it in a bag or briefcase.

im not concerned with the screen, but the silver lining has scratches/dents on mine in several spots, i just got the encase wich covers just the outer lining

Apple has created a directory of the iPhone web apps.

http://www.apple.com/webapps

Some good stuff in there that I'll be bookmarking. I just wish the actual directory page itself was a little more iPhone-friendly.

I read rumors a few days back that this was coming. Glad to see it didn't take too long. I'll check it out later.

Edit: Ok, played around with this a little bit, and it's cool that we now have a single place to look for cool apps to use, but the interface is so un-iPhone like. I would have rather seen something crafted specifically for the iPhone. Perhaps that's still in the works though.

I have updated to a Jailbreak 1.1.1 - long live the hackers! The process will be a fully formed app soon, but if anyone wants to go through the more painful process, things will be released shortly. Don't join the IRC channel if you aren't actively contributing code or testing the Jailbreak.

There is also apparently an unlock based on the decrypting of the 1.1.1 firmware as well, but YMMV with that one.

Possibly. Apple is about to start their iPhone development world tour. Its an NDA event, but if there is something genuinely interesting I will say that something interesting is happening (but not what it is).

Something is wrong with my phone :( Two days in a row, the battery is near dead after less than 8 hours from a full charge. I only used the phone to make one phone call. That's it. I checked to see if something is running in the background, and I can't find anything. No music is playing in the iPod, only one window open in safari to GAF. No stopwatch running, no alarm, no searching for wi-fi. Brightness is set to near nothing. I disabled all my e-mail accounts. Any ideas? BTW, I'm running the current firmware with no hacks, but I did have installer.app on it, but it got wiped when I reset the phone and updated to 1.1.

The iphone could be so cool but so far I don't think Apple is handling a lot of stuff right with it. We'll see.

Awesome. I'll look forward to your non-acknowledgment of possibly cool things. :D

Have you tried doing a full restore? I'd suggest doing that after you've synced the phone. it seems to be the cure all for a lot of these kinds of issues.

without reading like a 1000 pages...are some of the problems i read in reviews fixed yet? I need a new phone, and while I think I would prefer an unlocked nokia n95...it would be much easier to get the iphone(plus i like the slick interfaces)

Which problems are you referring to?

Can you be more specific on what "problems" you're referring to? There have been three updates released for the iPhone since it's launch, but I'm curious as to what the problems are.

I'm talking about MMS. Video recording. Custom ringtones. Mass storage. Fully functioning Bluetooth with stereo audio streaming. Voice dialing when you're using a car kit. Sending contact info to other people. Instant friggin' messenging. Sending an SMS to more than one recipient at a time...

And while writers are covering these facts in a glancing manner, alongside the quirky QWERTY, lack of 3G, and weak email support,.

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/apple/no-bs-iphone-review-276116.php

+ battery issues. I just googled iphone and reviews and came up with these but they are from launch and I know there were some updates...just curious what the current feeling was regarding the iphone after the "hype" had died down.

With the exception of custom ringtones (which are only available for purchase from the iTunes Store), none of the items on that list have been added to the iPhone feature list. Some could potentially be added in future firmware updates, but that solely depends on what is in Apple's non-public roadmap for the iPhone.

For the record, those are not "problems" -- they are features that have been omitted. There is a big difference between the two.

As for battery life, it seems from a lot of anecdotal evidence that some batteries are bad. Real-world battery life for me (and many others) has been AT LEAST as good as that promised by Apple. However, some people get lower performance by an order of magnitude, which implies a defective unit.

If those are holding you back, get the N95, as pretty much none of them have been addressed yet. No MMS or video recording. No out of the box mass storage (can be done with third party app), no real changes to Bluetooth, no voice dialing.

Ringtones are out, but you pretty much have to buy them. There are some third party apps that allow you to do your own, but they've been shutdown, for now, with the 1.1.1 update. iToner is said to b working again, but it hasn't been updated yet, and Apple is taking a stance against letting us use custom ringtones.

Instant messaging can be done from within any number of Web Apps. Battery life is just fine. No complaints on that front.

Oh i am not saying they are dealbreakers, i just want to know where things are...the n95 is $200 more so it should do more.

How do you guys feel about the Iphone now?

You have to weigh how much each of those things matters to you, though. If you're always sending/getting MMS messages, then you are not gonna like the iPhone or its handling of receiving MMSes from others.

I never used voice dial, bluetooth, MMS, etc. so the lack of those features doesn't bother me.

How do you guys feel about the Iphone now?

I love the phone. Best $600 I've ever spent.

I feel like I should mail Apple an extra $200 because the $399 I spent for the thing was a steal. The device has made such an impression on me and come in so handy, that I can't see myself going away from the iPhone line--I certainly won't go back to normal cellphones ever again. Every phone I own from now on will be a smart phone.

Shitty phone. Great Video/audio/internet device.

Lack of customization and openness without having to do a lot of hacks also annoying.

I bounce back on forth on whether it was a good purchase but overall I would say yes.

the iPhone is okay. I can see how if you've never used a smartphone before that you'd think it's an impressive piece of technology but for people who are used to smartphones it's okay and even good for what it does (combining an ipod with a phone). I'm still getting the hang of things but I already miss my old phone. This keyboard is killing me and I have slender fingers :( argh! And what's up with wifi not having priority over edge? 3g iPhone would've been awesome. One more reason to hate verizon for not jumping on it.
