looks like the itoner crew is having a tough time w/ the 1.1.1 update. :lol glad i didn't buy into their software. i'm surprised at how happy i am w/ the stock iphone. would love the hacks, but it looks like apple is going to make it tough for everyone including 3rd party developers.

http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/itoner/

They've already demonstrated the new version that works with 1.1.1. If it were 100%, it'd be out already--but it's definitely coming.

edit: beaten by Phoenix, of course :lol

That's the one bad thing about the 1.1.1 jailbreak...neither custom ringtones nor official ringtones work (official ringtones won't sync for some reason or will sync but when one tries to select the ringtone, it's silent). I'm stuck with "Old Phone" as my ringtone right now, but it's custom ringtones should come along soon enough.

I really wish Apple would offer up some actual, ya know, PHONE ringtones. I like Old Phone, but I don't like nearly every other ringtone option they've got. I want a RING, not an old timey car horn or motorcycle revving up. Don't get me wrong, those are fine for some people, but those noises don't actually get my attention as a ringtone.

for those with 1.1.1

have you noticed that your ipod will automatically start playing. Ill check my phone and for some reason the play icon is on the top bar. Ill go on safari and in the middle of surfing the net the play icon will pop up.

Nope. I haven't had this problem at all. Not that I've ever noticed anyway. There were two times when I grabbed my phone to go in the morning though, and found the battery was nearly dead, when it was fine the night before. That might be an explanation and I just didn't notice it.

I love my iPhone. It passed the weekend test with flying colours. As expected I started to like it more as I played with it, got email, voicemail, wallpapers and ringtones working and got used to the keyboard. I'm not going to bother hacking it. I still stand by my earlier comments on wanting 3g over wi-fi but iPhone is still a good product without it. Wi-fi is not nearly as widely available as some of you make it seem and I live in one of the most wi-fi friendly cities in the country. And even when wi-fi is readily available, like at the airport, the signal sucks but whatev, I'm done arguing that point.

The most immediate issue I have right now is that Safari keeps crashing. It's crashed on me three times and I don't know what it is that's causing it. I can't replicate the problem yet. Anyone know anything about this or what would cause Safari to crash? I feel like I'm doing something wrong but I'm not sure what.

Actually I have a Halo 3 background on my phone right now -- it's "any ol' JPEG," though I did put it in an iPhoto album that syncs to the phone.

LOL, that's exactly what I did! Except I don't have Halo 3 as my background :)

Have you ever restarted the phone? I dont mean put it to sleep, i mean completely power cycle it. Im still not sure there isnt a memory leak or something somewhere in the phones software because performance does seem to degrade over time. I find power cyclig it at least once a week does the trick.

As I said in an earlier post today, most of the time when Safari crashes it's due to something on the website and probably not something you're doing. I know that a number of us were able to crash Safari consistently early on when we accessed a GAF thread with lots of screen shots. I'm sure it's a memory issue.

I will say that I rarely have issues with Safari. I've probably had it crash on me four or five times total. I'd recommend rebooting your phone from time to time, as I'm sure that helps clear caches and memory for smoother operation.

Good advice! And I agree. In fact, that's actually good advice for nearly any electronic device.

Yeah, that's what I was using too. Pretty much all the rest of the ring tones weren't actually RING tones.

Sometimes when I browse a big thread on GAF with lots of images, it runs out of memory and crashes.

I get that... I can be doing nothing, look at my phone and see the play icon. Its weird, because I can just go on itunes, click a song and then hit the play/pause button, and it goes away.

Guys I have a problem.

I activated my iPhone and then checked the updates and it told me that my iPhone isn't updated. So, I downloaded the update and installed it on my iPhone. Then itunes gave me a message telling me that iPhone is restarting and that I shouldn't disconnect it from my computer.

It is has been almost ten minutes and my iPhone hasn't shown up again at itunes and the iPhone screen is the one when you turn it on for the first time (the one with the earth and it asks you to connect it to itunes to activate it)

WTF

Are you using stock firmware or is the phone hacked?

Disconnect from your computer. Reboot it, then plug it back into your iTunes. See if that helps.

This happened to me a couple of times with updates. Try this: go to Run, type in "services.msc" without the quotes, and hit enter. You should see Apple Mobile Device listed. The status should be at "Started" and Startup Type at "Automatic." If it isn't, change it. If it is right, right click on it and click Restart. It SHOULD recognize your iPhone now.

Alternatively (with a few upgrades and downgrades because I couldn't get jailbreak 1.1.1 to work for a long time), I've found that this doesn't always work and sometimes you have to uninstall and reinstall iTunes as well as restart your computer. If it STILL doesn't recognize (this has happened to me as well), then go ahead and hold the home and sleep button together on your iPhone. After about 8-10 seconds, let go of the sleep button but keep holding the home button. If you're running firmware 1.1.1 you'll see the iTunes logo and a dock cable (or a yellow triangle for firmware 1.0.2). Reconnect your iPhone and your iTunes will definitely recognize it as a iPhone in "recovery mode" (I've never had iTunes not recognize an iPhone in recovery mode). Hit restore and you should be fine after that.

Thanks guys. It is working now. I figured out what was wrong as soon as i typed that post.

I only had to disconnect the iPhone and then connect it again. It is basically the same thing as what Kung Fu Jedi said.

And I am not planning on hacking the phone

Wee! Finally got my iPhone activated today. I had to wait 2 weeks until my Verizon contract bit the dust. I'm posting now from the phone, still getting the hang of the keyboard. No complaints so far but NewsGator Mobile is a bit wonky for me so far. What are people using for RSS?

I just use the Apple RSS site. If you just select a news feed from your bookmarks, it automatically sends you to the Apple feed reader.

Well... on Tuesday 9, I became an official iPhone user.

After a little beet over a week of using it, these are my impressions:

-I fucking love it. Hands down, one of the best gadgets ever made.

-The speaker feature is really underrated. I find myself using the speaker 75% of the time, like when I wake up and prepare for school: As soon as I wake up, I fire up my latest podcast and I listen to it while I'm fixing my stuff , then I take the iPhone to the bathroom where I take my morning dump and I keep listening to it while I brush my teeth and comb, and then I take it to the kitchen and I keep on listening while taking breakfast.

-Taking phone calls with the headphones is really cool.

-The camera is good. It could be better, but I don't mind.

-3 party apps are a must. Can't live without Sketches, Colloquy, and Apollo.

-To get the 100% out of an iPhone, you got to have a decent amount of computer knowledge. Try to explain to average Joe that you must set the permission correctly when installing apps over SFTP.

-Agent 18 EcoCase rocks. If you're paranoid about dropping your iPhone and you want something to protect it, then the EcoCase is for you. Doesn't look bad on the iPhone and protects it decently.

And now, something cool that happened to me:

Last Tuesday, One of my best friends was making fun of my non-phone iPhone -I bought a week 39 iPhone with 1.1.1 OOTB-. I told him that it was a matter of time before I could unlock my iPhone. He said "Let's bet on it. If you call me from your iPhone before next Sunday, I'll pay you dinner, if not, then you pay mine". I said: "Deal!".

Literally, 6 hours later, I unlocked my phone and call my friend. I said "Better have your wallet next to you, because I'm calling you from my iPhone". He demanded proof, which I provided. This Friday dinner's on him. :D

Agreed about the speaker. It sucks for music but it's fucking awesome for podcasts, seriously. They don't require any fidelity. I turn mine on really low and fall asleep to podcasts every night, helps keep me from staying up all night. My mind has a tendency to wander and the low-volume podcasts keep it focused enough to stop thinking about random shit.

Hey guys. Did you read the news today on Apple.com?

OFFICIAL APPLE IPHONE DEV KIT IN FEBRUARY!!

This is no rumor. It came direct from Steve's mouth... Er well, a letter he wrote on Apple's website. Everyones iPhone just got a hell of a lot cooler.

Awesome news about the SDK in February. Hopefully it won't be too locked down so the average joe will be able to download it and create apps.

I love the speaker on it too. Only thing that irks me is when I'm using different headphones at work, I get a call, music stops, I yank the headphones out, answer the call, talk, then hang up and the phone immediately locks itself and the music starts blaring really loudly to everyone at my office.

Before 1.1.1, I would have to frantically hit the top button, unlock it, and press the volume rocker down and wait for it to silence itself but now I just double tap the home button real quick and pause.

Good thing I never got caught playing anything embarrassing.

There is a thread about it specifically.

Just got an 8GB for cheap! W00T!

Now what?

***Really*** not feeling the method of music transfer iTunes forces on you. Very poor.

Anapod, Ephpod... What are all the other iTunes haters using w/ their iPhones?

I cracked the glass screen when I was drunk last weekend :(

I am going to take it in, if they try and pull "not covered in warranty" I have my backup, merge calls always never worked since I got it.

GMAIL IMAP, OMG!!!!!! Awesomeness!!!!! Finally, using gmail with both the iPhone and Apple mail is no longer a pain in the butt!!! Thank you Google-Jebus!!! :lol

EDIT: Eh, spoke too soon. Apparently, they're rolling it out in stages or something because it seems it's only showing up for people using external domains at the moment. It apparently is going to be rolled out for everyone though because on top of how to set it up for iPhone being in the help, the FAQ answer stating that IMAP is not supported is no longer available under the Gmail help.

I don't see the ability to enable IMAP in my Gmail account settings. I'm confused. :(

Edit - Oh, nevermind then. Hurry up and give us IMAP, Google!

I've got IMAP. Some people are saying you need to log out and in again. Not much is noticeable initially, but I'm sure IMAP Gmail on my iPhone will reveal it's awesomeness once I start using it.

Awesome. I just configured this on my iPhone and it looks like it's going to be much better than the old Gmail implementation on iPhone. Very cool. Nice surprise from Google. The iPhone got better without Apple doing anything. :)

Hey, has anybody used this iDemocracy app? It keeps saying "an unknown error occurred in applying the Symlink, possibly related to permissions or missing files. Reinstall this app, make sure your iPhone is plugged in, and try again."

I'm not quitting at this point. I've already lost all my contacts so I'm not doing the 1.1.1 update unless I can get me some goddamn jailbreak action.

Help would be greatly appreciated. I can't figure out what could possibly be going wrong. (I'm on Vista, if that changes anything.)

P.S. Downgrading works fine. That's not a problem. It's strictly the symlink thing that's causing me grief.

The trade-off was made to save battery life, and for me, it's fine.

I know this was from a page back but I think it was an intelligent decisions. I have EV-DO on my smart phone and it DESTROYS the battery. I hate having to ration out my net experience for fear that my battery won't last the entire day. And to be damn honest it's not all that fast to be worth the hassle. I'd take the better battery life over net speed. IMO if your ass is stuck somewhere and you're bored to death, an extra 15 seconds of load time won't be the end of you.

This is great -- I added my two Gmail accounts to the phone, finally. My remaining issue with Mail is that there's no spam filter built-in. I have .Mac and would at least like my junk settings to carry over from Mail.app so I don't spend all day getting beeps from my phone when it's just spam.

Finally! w00t-w00t Gmail IMAP is working perfectly for me on my iPhone, first try.

HALLELUJAH!!!

Life is good. This is honestly the most exciting development for iPhone for me thus far. :D

Hey, I'm gonna need somebody who knows how the hell to jailbreak this new firmware because I'm not giving up without a fight on this thing. Anybody know of a good iPhone hacking/third-party app development community?

where's the gmail IMAP setting? i log into my account but the tab only displays "Forwarding and POP" am i missing something?
