If you have the Installer... installed, use it to install the following (in order):

Sources > Community Sources
System > BSD Subsystem
System > OpenSSH

Exit Installer, and it will soft reset your phone. Next download WinSCP. Log your iPhone onto the same WLAN used by the desktop and get its IP address (from the home screen, Settings > WiFi > Click on the blue arrow to the right of the network name). In WinSCP, type in the iPhone's IP address as the host name. The username is "root" and the password is "alpine." Uncheck "Allow SCP fallback" and login. It will take approximately 30 seconds to respond (if you get "Connection refused", you've done something wrong). After 30 seconds, a window will pop up asking whether you want to login -- click the proper button and you're in.

Awesome.

There a way to get ringtones on the thing using this app? I tried just dropping an mp3 into the ringtones folder and that didn't work.

Here is the proxy file for T-Mobile's $5.99/month WAP interwebs... allows Mail (tested with Gmail IMAP and Y!) and full Safari web:
Code:
    function FindProxyForURL(url, host) {
    // URLs in the imap.apple.mail.yahoo.com domain could be
    // accessed directly, since they worked before without a proxy:
    if (shExpMatch(url, “*.mail.yahoo.com/*”)) {return “DIRECT”;}
    if (shExpMatch(url, “*login.yahoo.com/*”)) {return “DIRECT”;}

    // The same could work for Gmail (uncomment and change URL):
    if (shExpMatch(url,”*.gmail.com/*”)) {return “DIRECT”;}

    // Other URLs from within T-MobileWeb network are
    // to be accessed via port 8080 on 216.155.165.50:
    if (isInNet(myIpAddress(), “10.184.0.0″, “255.248.0.0″)) {
    return “PROXY 216.155.165.50:8080″;
    }

    // All the requests from non-T-MobileWeb addresses
    // could be accessed first via port 8080 on 216.155.165.50
    // If it fails to respond, then go directly to the URL:
    return “PROXY 216.155.165.50:8080; DIRECT”;
    }
The preferences.plist code you can find easily elsewhere

Sorry if this has been answered before, but where can you buy the cheapest iphone? Is 399 at apple.com the cheapest? I read something about refurbished, how can you buy one of them and at what price?

Look in Apple's refurb section on their website. I haven't checked to see if they have iPhones recently but they had some recently.

The internet is super easy to use.

Thank you

Im not from the US so unfortunately I don't know about all the special deals and stores that exists and asking here instead of googling is easier and gives me more accurate information. But i agree that the internet is easy to use :)

I friend of mine from the us is visiting soon so i thought it would be nice to take advantage of that and the low value of the dollar.

a little OT but does anyone have a good mirror to D/L the latest Itunes update from? For like the last month the computer i use my Iphone on will just not load the apple website so its been pretty much impossible for me to update. I can't figure out WTF is going on.

Even the auto-update in iTunes itself is not working?

The Hackint0sh guide for virginizing an unlocked 1.0.2 phone, upgrading and then unlocking with jailbreakme.com is great!

I'm all up to date now.

Till 1.1.2 anyway :)

Wow! Weird. Your browser can't go to Apple and iTunes won't as well. Sounds like someone is site is blocked for some reason. Are you on a PC by chance? Could be you picked up some odd malware that blocks access to certain sites. Probably written by a Zune fanboy. :D

G-Phone announcements are coming in this morning. Sounds interesting. Not so much a phone as a platform for developing on a smart phone. Models running the OS won't be out until second half of 2008, but it's going to be VERY open for developers.

Hopefully some of this news will get Apple to really open up the iPhone for new features and programs. Competition is good.

Yeah, it sounds like it's going to have some interesting options once everything starts falling into place. Too bad they didn't get Verizon as their carrier, but I suppose they might yet considering they have Sprint. I'm not a huge fan of T-Mobile. My year of service with them was awful, but I've heard Sprint has come a long way since they merged with Nextel.

Sprint is awful from a CS standpoint. That still hasn't changed.

Almost forgot... I missed several important calls while listening to my iPhone while it sat on the dock (the one it comes with). It did that sluggish response bullshit it sometimes does. I turned it off (which was a fight in and of itself), back on and noticed several missed calls.

Not cool. Happen to anyone else before?

Sprint is complete garbage from a CS standpoint. The merger with Nextel only seems to confuse the CS employees more, as they are still split between Nextel and Sprint. I would call the number on my bill and get sent to Nextel CS and be told they couldn't help me because I am a Sprint customer. It didn't make any sense and it literally seemed like the CS represenatives were more confused than I was. I am glad to never have to deal with that company again.

Hasn't happened to me. Only time I nearly missed a call was when I was checking e-mail on EDGE. After it was done though, it picked up the incoming call. I wouldn't have known the difference the person calling said that it rang a bunch of times.

It looks like Firmware 1.1.2 will be released tomorrow. No idea if it'll bring anything new other than some bug fixes, but it's out in time for the U.K. and German launch of the iPhone.

Also, I've been having weird battery issues recently. I leave my phone on most of the time, and recently I've had the battery near full when I go to bed at night, only to wake up the next morning with it drained a lot more than it should be for just stand by time. Anyone else had this happen?

Only if I had it connected via usb to a powered-off computer.

You seem pretty resourceful with all things Iphone. Im looking into picking one up tomorrow and I have a ton of questions?

Ive already glossed through both threads but Im still kinda of Fuzzy on a few pts.

-Itunes is the only program that can access the Iphone, ephod and anapod do not work, Right?

-How is the voice clarity on the phone? and how well does it handle drop calls?

-Battery life. In general what should I be looking at? standby? talk time? music? video?

-Ear buds, are there any 3rd party earbuds that support the Iphone yet? usually apple is pretty cheap with the buds and they never seem to fit in my ear.

-Whats the advantage of hacking the phone? what are some 3rd party essentials apps?

-Do I really have to use Itunes?

-Bluetooth, does this work with music as well as reg phone usuage?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me... This is probably my last big purchase B4 my baby is born, and it has to be a good one.

I've missed a few calls due to the way it uses the EDGE connection. They need to change things so that phone calls are priority number one.

Hmm... resourceful? Not sure about that. ;) But anyway, as far as I know, no third party programs work for syncing with the iPhone, just iTunes. It's super simple to use though, and has everything you need in one interface.

Elhandro said:

Voice clarity/quality is great for me. Before the 1.1.1 update I would sometimes need to crank up the volume, but not any more. It's plenty clear and loud. Not sure what you mean when you ask how well it handles dropped calls. When they drop, they drop. That said, I've only had one or two drops with it since I got it on day 1. Simply redialing has worked both times.

Elhandro said:

Battery life is generally pretty good, with the exception of the odd behavior I've been having lately. Apple rates the stand by time as 10 days, which is probably pretty accurate if you do absolutely nothing on it. When I first got the iPhone I played with it constantly, thus the battery burned out quickly, and I was recharging it every night. Now that it's become more of a tool I only use when I need to, it lasts more like 2-3 days of mixed use. Besides using it as a phone, I also use it to check e-mail, surf the web, and I use Google Maps regularly. I get solid battery life out of it with this kind of use.

Elhandro said:

The included ear buds are standard Apple fare, although they do allow you to talk on the phone with them and have a tiny clicker that allows you to pause music, skip to the next track, or answer the phone. There is at least one third-party option for headphones that do the same thing. If you don't care about using the headphones to talk on the phone with, then you can use what ever headphones you would like, although depending on the headphones, you may need to buy a $10 adapter to use them.

Elhandro said:

Hacking the phone allows you to install third party applications on the iPhone, giving it more functionality and customizability, sometimes with the tradeoff being stability. Personally, I haven't hacked my phone, but there are quite a few applications out there that many hackers love having on their iPhones.

Elhandro said:
-Do I really have to use Itunes?

Yes. You do. And it really isn't that bad. Not sure what the problem is here.

Elhandro said:
-Bluetooth, does this work with music as well as reg phone usuage?

Yes, but the bluetooth profile doesn't support stereo through bluetooth headphones. At least not yet, thus you'd have diminished quality of your music.

No problem. Hope you enjoy the iPhone. I love mine more and more each day, and I think it's got a very bright future. Especially with the SDK coming in February, bringing official applications to the device.

Good Info

Thank you so much,

Honestly I really really dont like how slow,bloated and cumbersome Itunes is but I like the phone and its ability to expand in other apps.
Plus I love the UI.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer all of my questions.........I should be posting some impressions by the end of the week.

ok here is my issue...I finally decided to update my iphone via itunes and I recieved an error. Now my phone is stuck with the apple logo and the icon at the bottom as if its loading..what can I do? also the phone wont turn off

edit: now I am getting a error that my iphone cannot be restored back to normal..wtf? Did i somehow brick my damn phone?

Just got an Iphone and I have one problem. Whenever I put it on the sync station to connect to the computer or charge, the date and time on the phone go haywire. It will go a week into the future at some random time or in the past. Why is this? This will stay until I power off my phone and power it back on. It happens every sync/charge.

Right now my phone reads Dec 15 1:09PM and it is Nov 8, 8:28PM

Well Apple sure works quick....

http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/08/apple-posts-firmware-v1-1-2-goodbye-jailbreak/

Looks like Apple just published firmware v1.1.2 for the iPhone; hit the download link to grab it yourself because iTunes hasn't yet gotten wise to the fact that it's out. Details to follow, but don't expect jailbreak or the unactivated Safari workaround hack to still be functional, ok? (... aaaand we're watching our download speed drop as our readers are grabbing the file. Rockin'.) Update: TIFF jailbreak exploit is dead. Sorry people. More below.

Update: Ok, We're "sacrificing" an iPhone for you people. We'll let you know what we find.

* Extracting software... restarting... iTunes successfully upgraded to 1.1.2.
* The "slide for emergency" slider flashed through different languages while it was waiting to be plugged in again.
* It's activated, pulled the backup data, and restarted -- success! Officially on 1.1.2.
* Testing jailbreakme.com... looks like they broke jailbreak! Yep, it's broken alright.
* Not really finding any new features -- certainly no new icons, no voice memos, nothing obvious about disk mode. Anyone else finding anything?
* Looks like international keyboards are finally enabled! Score one for everyone overseas who can't use their now-relocked iPhone.
* A few reports are coming in that their iPhone is "much faster now" (not that we remember ours being slow at all before). Maybe Apple made some performance tweaks this update.
* Can anyone confirm whether TurboSIM is working with this update?

To those scouring the internets searching for a changelog or support sheet on Apple's site, don't keep it to yourself,

In one of the iPhone dev camps I saw that there was a VPN slider under wireless networking. Not sure if that is in this release or not though.

well jailbreakme actually patched the tiff exploit when it jailbreaks your phone... any kind of exploit that lets a website flash your phone seems pretty serious lol. i would hope apple would patch it quickly.

ok i need help. i am new to this iphone thing as i bought mine yesterday [cracked ]

i have the FW 1.0.2

i have Itune 7.5.. the last one i got from apple.com

i want to upload ringtones to the phone. please someone tell me how to. if he can go extra mile telling me how to do it EXACTLY, i will be thankful.

also. is there a way i can transfer say..pdf file or doc files to iphone and read it from there?

thanks alot

Aiaiai, this is bad timing. I bought an iphone from apple store yesterday and im planning on using it in Europe. Obviously i have to jailbreak it. So, what is the possibility that the phone is already upgraded to 1.1.2? Since the uk, german and french phones are already 1.1.2, does that imply that every phone from now on is 1.1.2 and that there're no 1.1.1 left in the supply chain?

Also, what is the best and most active iphone forum on the internet?

When it syncs it's probably getting the time/date from your computer. Have you checked to be sure that it's set properly, time zone and all? After you're done syncing it grabs time and date from the cell network. Just a thought.

Anything at retail is probably still 1.1.1 and will be for awhile. Until stocks are replenished anyway. I'm sure there still plenty out there that are 1.1.1. That said, why is it obvious that your phone needs to be Jailbroken? You should be able to use it Europe with out Jailbreak.

Yes. Because Treo's never have any problems. None at all.

iTunes is really pissing me off. Is there no alternative with regards to syncing and such?

Here's the issue:

I have multiple instances of the same video(s) in the video tab on the iphone portion of itunes. How do I clean this up? Unchecking the videos removes them from the phone, but re-checking them put only 3 (out of like 50) videos back on the phone. The paths have probably change, but if that's the case, why are they all still displayed in the video list?

Any suggestions?

also. is there a way i can transfer say..pdf file or doc files to iphone and read it from there?

If you have 'Installer' go to 'community sources' or something like that. There was a pdf viewer available. Saw it just last night.

I'm going to wait until iTunes tells me that I'm ready for the 1.1.2 update. The update curl shows like 3 different downloads all versioned at 1.1.2 (with an older one being the one making the Engadget rounds):

Code:
curl -s -L http://phobos.apple.com/version | gunzip

Also, I have a smart playlist for all TV shows (Video Kind IS TV Show) and it's buggy as hell. Try adding it to a new smart playlist and the qualifier disappears, along with the +/- buttons, meaning you have to delete the playlist before you can edit it.

*Charlie Brown scream face.gif*

The wait for a h4x begins. I'm happy with the current firmware, tho.

My friend's iPhone has started crashing a lot. Think that could be because he downloaded too much buggy software? Even the normal programs started crashing for him, and I'm not sure how he's supposed to fix that. Can you 'reboot' a hacked phone to its original software?

Just leave it alone if you want to ensure you have no problems. I've never hacked my phone and it's fine.

I live in europe (Norway), using At&t would be awfully expensive if its even possible. Anyway, ill risk it. 399 dollars is nothing compared to what you have to pay for similar stuff here. Hopefully my friend in the US will receive it soon and confirm which version it is.
