Agreed. Hack at your own risk IMHO, and also know that Apple will continue to take steps against hackers. I can wait until official apps are available following the release of the SDK in February.

I have zero problems with my iPhone.

-And on that note what is the best program to compress video and are there any legal apps that let you veiw manga..........shot in the dark

If you can convert the manga pages into a series of JPEG images, then just create a photo album and view them that way.

Remember that perfectly happy users of everyday normal iPhones don't make the effort to post "me too!" on forums. Most of who post here with problems are fringe users who hack the shit out of it and expect customer service or the traditional minority of everyday users experiencing frustration. The (vast?) majority of everyday users are just fine.

I previously jailbroke my phone but went legit with 1.1.1 because I've chosen not to engage in the FW wars that eventually led to my hating my PSP.

I really would recommend against unlocking the phone if it's your primary source of telephony, as that's a pretty mission critical function that can be made less reliable as a result of jailbreaking. As such, there isn't really a killer app that brings out unheard of value in the homebrew repos yet.

It's not perfectly stable, but I've not had anything disastrous occur, only minor nuisances. I've had mine for 2 months, haven't bothered hacking it. Some little issues build up over time but if you completely cycle the power (a simple 10 sec task), it restores stability for a week or more.

That's been my experience as well. Honestly, even with some slight issues, using the phone is fantastic. It really feels less like a cellphone, and more like some sort of futuristic all-in-one media device. It's not perfect, but the user experience is so novel, it easily makes up for any minor technical quibbles.
 
Yeah, I'd say if you're going to try to unlock your phone, make sure you pick up a cheapie as a backup. Unlocks will probably be broken with every firmware update, and there's no telling how long it'll take for solutions to pop up.

Just timed it with my iPhone. It was less than 25 seconds from sliding the Shut Down slider to restart. Not major at all, but yeah, more than 10 seconds.

Got the UK iPhone and took it home, and o2 couldn't find my address on the Royal Mail database, so they require a £100 deposit to hold for 3 months then give you it back as call credit.

So it's gone back to the shop. Dissapointment-ton total.

Funny thing is, I've got credit approved for bank accounts, credit cards and loans at this address. What gives? I'll wait till next month and be better prepared.

Just to make you less jealous of America in this regard: one of the several data warehouses that does cheap background checks for American social security numbers is missing my SSN#. So every fourth or fifth application I sign is rejected and I'm accused of identity fraud.

I was actually surprised when my iPhone went through.

Um... yeah. There isn't anything in that video to get upset with Apple over. Clearly at the beginning of the video he was finishing up giving an answer, which we don't get to hear at all, and then reporter continues to prod the guy over it. He said he had already answered it and wanted to move on. When the reporter continued, he was told that the interview was about the iPhone and not iTunes. The guy kept asking though, so they moved on.

This is really a non-story though. Plenty of hardware out there only interface with the software that is included, including other cell phones.

Sorry, it's longer than that. Hardly a siginficant difference given how infrequently it needs to be done. I wasn't deliberately attempting to mislead the guy, if that's what you thought. I was just speaking from memory.
 
I will preface this post by saying that I love my iPhone.

However, the apps crash a lot. Safari leads the pack. Runner up would be the phone component it self, when browsing while listening to music, then receiving a calll. As amazing and convenient as all those features are, I'd prefer it not result in a Russian Roullette style apps crash.

It did this prior to me JBing the thing.

I would have gotten it replaced.

Only time I've really had Safari crashes are on forums where a lot of images come up. There may have been the occasional outside of that, but that's more a rare occurrence.

I don't think I've ever had it crash on me during a call in any way.
 
I agree, the only time I've had something crash is when Safari might quit to the home screen or the iPod music might stop playing when Safari is open - both have only happened when the page being loaded is especially large and complex.

I've never had a call-related crash of any kind and never had any problems with the music functionality getting out of the way when a call is coming in.
 
I love it. Simply amazing how you can surf and listen to music with out have to expend much effort, everything seems to work really nicely. And I havent had to much issues with Itunes yet.

I am however a little confused on the cover art system. Can I use jpegs that I already have or is this some Apple BS system of only using there art. Most of my music is stuff Ive had for a while and I really dont want to have to rebuy it again. Plus I have a lot of underground ish that Im sure Itunes wouldnt carry in their database.

Thanks everyone again for the help. I am not going to hack yet. Seems pretty cohesive as is and My wife loves it, so I wont mess with it to much.

You can use your own images for cover art. When you're in iTunes, right click the song and select "Get Info". You'll be able to add the cover art there. Doing it this way will actually embed the image directly into the MP3 or AAC file's metadata.

However, if you use iTunes built in "Get Album Art" feature, those images will *NOT* be embedded into the files and will instead be put into an iTunes cache. They will show up on your iPhone also but if you ever change computers or something, you'll have to do it again. So I recommend you add your cover art directly so they get embedded into the song file.
 
When I first purchased my US iPhone at launch, a lot of the apps crashed continually as well with Safari being the most frequent. I experienced a crash at least once every 10-15 minutes before the day was even over. I did a fresh install of the firmware through iTunes and the problem went away. It will occasionally start to do crash a lot with frequency every now and then, and the fresh install seems to fix it every time (though it's admittedly not the most convenient method since you have to re-sync all your content).

After I jailbroke it in two different ways, the app's crashed A LOT (especially jailbreakme.com way). This way is really stable (for me) and is giving me no SSH issues. I'm assuming it works on the iPhone, but I used it with an iPod Touch. You need .NET Framework 3.0 (it'll install it for you).

If your app's crashed a lot before the jailbreak, I suggest you restore it (to get rid of any traces of jailbreaking) and replace it if possible...
 
Another thing to be mindful of is that most apps are still running in the background even after you leave them. If you want an app to close entirely (like iPod, Safari, and most third party apps) and free up some ram, press and hold the home button while in the program and it will entirely close and quit the program.
 
Safari crashes in spurts for me. It'll be fine for a week and then crash every 10 minutes.

The most frequent crash is when I'm playing the iPod while surfing: the iPod will cut out and crash. That one bugs me the most because I have to quit what I'm doing and find the playlist all over again. If I'm loading a large page, the iPod will quit every time (non-jailbreaked phone)

Here is another question for the Pro's.

I like how Youtube works but what about other pages that stream data. pgs like gametrailers, crunchyroll and other pgs that use flash. How do I get them to stream data. None of those pages work.

And Im just guessing that there is no legal app that streams data from you pc ?

what cool programs am I missing out on by not jail breaking my Iphone?

Wow. I almost never have crashes. Safari has only crashed a handful of times for me, and it's always been on a site that is pretty photo intensive or something. I've probably only had Mail crash once, and I can't think of any other apps crashing. Mine has been very stable.

And as others have said, if you ever have any stability issues, a restart usually does wonders.

He had answered the question by giving a canned answer instead of actually listening to the question which was then repeated for clarity. I understand the event is about iPhone but iTunes is integral to the device and it's not off topic afaic. But basically he ignored the question in the full interview going into Starbucks et cetera.

Digg felt the same way about it, hardly surprising considering it's an Apple fansite. You should have seen the response, sounded exactly like yours but more violent towards the story like Apple are some kind of untouchables.

If Apple want their system to be closed to preserve the user experience then that's fine- the line between doing that and having a monopoly is very fine. When Microsoft gets owned by the EU for various fair play acts nobody stands up in their defence as much as Apple fans will if they are in fact in the wrong.
 
What the hell's taking 1.1.2 so long? Supposedly, it gets sucked down if you do a restore, but not if you click the update button.

Is there really anything useful in it? Seemed mainly just gives more language support. Then again, I haven't been keeping up with it.

If it makes Mobile Safari or iPod crash less, that's more than enough feature for me.
 
My iphone's safari keeps crashing every 5 minutes and goes to the home menu. Its incredibly annoying. My iphone is not hacked in anyway and this never happened 2 weeks ago.

It's available for download by Apple's phobos server, but I've decided not to download it and manually apply the update because there are multiple packages with the same labeled version and I want to wait to install the legit one.

Apple is not planning to take any steps against the hackers (the people who jailbreak and write 3rd party apps for the phone who have in fact been the pressure Apple needed to open 3rd party development for the phone). They have, at best, taken steps only against the unlockers. In this particular race, however, the unlockers are on good legal footing at DMCA and other reverse engineering court rulings give them the right to do what they're doing so long as they don't sell the phones.
 
Why is it that 70% of the apps/games I install...don't work? Tap Tap Revolution and Lights Off seem cool.

Again, from that video, I can't tell what was asked before or what his answer was exactly. But clearly the question had been asked, and he responded, but not in a way that the reporter liked.

The question of whether or not iTunes is a monopoly is a completely different issue than requiring it's use with the iPhone. In fact, there is other software that works with the iPod, so I would assume there would be others eventually for the iPhone as well. They'll allow it to sync and manage your music/files etc. They won't interface with the iTunes Music Store though. That's where the real monopolistic issues may come into play. The fact that the iTunes Music Store ONLY works with the iPod.

As I said earlier, plenty of devices come with their own software that is required to make it work properly. There is nothing new about that, and Apple certainly isn't the only one to do so. To criticize them about that is pretty lame. Especially as there well may be other options eventually. So, what exactly is the problem?

Also, for the record, there is a recent challenge to iTMS here in the States as to if it's a monopoly or not because it's not open to other devices. He possibly can't answer some of those questions because of that case pending too.

Same here. I kept my edited ringtones too. I haven't seen 1.1.2 come through yet though.
