The rumor on various deal sites is that starting December 26, the iPhone will be $199.

That would be beyond stupid. Not because its a price drop, but because they would immediately overload their stores (AT&T and Apple) with people returning iPhones WITHIN the 14 day window and buying them back at the cheaper price. While I certainly suspect that there is a price drop coming (grin) I expect it to happen Q1 at MacWorld which is surprisingly enough JUST outside of the product return window...

I got an iPhone for Christmas. I think I'll have my g/f return it until after MacWorld, just in case they announce something new! Good plan?

The best they will do is announce a price drop.

There will be no new model (3G or otherwise) at least until mid next year.

Well, they actually may announce a new model (3G or more, or maybe just memory size increases) at Macworld, but these announced changes probably wouldn't show up until mid-year.

Well, I won't wait 6 months (if it's that awesome an update, I'd just eBay my current one to get the new one). And a price drop is unlikely, no?

So maybe I should stop torturing myself and just activate this baby.

A sure fire way to not sell iPhones is to announce that a superior model is coming out in 6 months.

It's very rare for apple to announce something that far away. They did it for the iPhone because they wanted to build an insane level of hype for the thing, it was a new market for them and they couldn't take the chance of having a huge inventory and nobody buying it.

So maybe I should stop torturing myself and just activate this baby.

You should. It was a gift, so who cares about the price.

I signed up for AT&T with a free phone (and Best Buy was waiving activation) so I could use the 30 day return period to see if I can get coverage where I need it. So far AT&T coverage isn't as horrifically bad as many would have me think. It's no Verizon, though, and I'm sure all bets are off if I leave the dense population of NJ. But it's enough I think that I will bust the iPhone out of its packaging and activate that sucker!

Also, now I'll have a backup phone in case my iPhone breaks/I accidentally drop it.

My phone's touchscreen has crapped out on the line where you access google maps/stocks/etc. Bummer. :\ I'm flying back home tomorrow, so I guess I'll just wait until then to take care of it. Thank God it'll be as easy as just re-synching a new one.

Did anyone else try to buy their iphone with cash? The Apple store by my place tried to tell me that they weren't accepting cash for the iphone, just a credit card. I had to make a big enough stink about it until they "let it slide this one time". This one time? How many iphones do they think I am going to purchase?

The no cash policy started two months ago:

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 26 (AP) — Apple no longer accepts cash for iPhone purchases and now limits sales of the cellphone to two per person in a move to stop people from reselling them.

The new policy started Thursday, said Natalie Kerris, an Apple spokeswoman. Before then, there was no cash restriction and the purchase limit was five per person.

I never knew. I didn't see anything on their site, nor were there any visible signs in their store. Still, isn't the refusal of cash illegal? I thought pretty much everybody had to take cash.

The funny thing is they wanted me to buy a gift card and purchase the phone that way. I failed to see the difference, considering that you do not give any personal infromation away when buying a gift card.

The policy is still a shit policy.

Quick question to anyone here who can help me out:

I recently sold my iPhone on eBay which has my original old SIM card in it. It's no longer activated (the SIM), but it does have an attachment to my phone number I noticed when I look at iTunes and in the settings. I'm now using the same number on my new iPhone with a new SIM. I was wondering if there is some inherent danger in just giving away my SIM card if it still has this basic attachment, or can I go ahead and ship the SIM card with it?

It is not illegal in the United States to refuse cash for payment.

So i just got an iPhone and its awesome. Only problem I am having is the new itunes wi-fi store.

When I click "Buy" it goes to my download thing and then just dissapears after that. In the itunes store the song I "bought" is now in lighter text and no longer gives me to the option I guess to buy again.

Is there a reason itunes isn't actually downloading the song onto my iphone?

GearLive claims to have played with the upcoming iPhone 1.1.3 firmware update and reveals a number of new features to be included to the latest version of the iPhone's software.

Dragging the Mail icon

The new features are shown in a screenshot gallery. Amongst the new features depicted:

- Edit Home Screen - Rearrange icons on your home screen
- Drag icons around with your finger
- Locate Me integration (pseudo-GPS) with Google Maps
- Send SMS to multiple people
- Add Safari Bookmarks to your Home Screen

The features shown do not correlate with some earlier rumors of the 1.1.3 firmware. GearLive has not previously been a source of accurate rumors or images on Apple products, previously spreading mockups of iPod nanos. These new screenshots, however, appear convincing on casual inspection.

I really hope those updates are real, but I doubt it. Gearlive isn't a known Mac rumor site.

All very common-sense features though, and moveable icons and additional home screens is paving the way for the official 3rd party apps.

Would have been a lot of effort to fake those screens as well, and if you are going to fake it they would have done something obvious like MMS or videorecording.

My gut feeling is they are real, the first place to get their hands on 1.1.2 wasn't a Mac rumours site either.

Up here in the great white north it seems that some stores are tired of waiting for the chance that the iPhone might show up, and are instead giving away 8GB iPod Touch systems with contracts instead. :lol

I do have a question though: is there anything in the activation that locks down your iTunes store access to a specific country? iTunes itself is flexible in letting you swap countries around, but I'm not sure about the phone, which would need to be one country for phone purposes and another for DRM.

The google maps GPS type feature will be really useful for me. I love the directions feature on the iPhone but it sucks having to find where you are and manually type in the address. Rearranging the home screen of course is nice too, and lays the groundwork for third party apps.

I'm guessing/hoping we will get this at Macworld (January 14, 2008).

Why hasn't Apple ported iChat or something like that to iPhone? WebApps for aim on iphone are frustrating me, I guess I'll just jailbreak it

I jailbroke my phone just for AIM, and I was pretty disappointed in those offerings. Beejive is actually better than the apps offered via Jailbreak for AIM. Not to mention that my phone became unstable (lots more crashing, occasional freezes) after I'd done it. I went back to factory settings about 2 days after and haven't looked back. Who knows what else they'll add come January 14 at Macworld.

Well the chat programs are very buggy, but I read that the makers of Apollo are making the next version of it for the offical SDK release, so it will hopefully be really stable come February.

Is there any info whether the official release of apps will allow for you to install free ones (like now, minus the jailbreak) or will every app you get be from iTunes, therefore having a price on it?

Has anyone seen the CameraPro app that was released yesterday? The free version includes digital zoom, image sizing, black and white pictures, etc. The premium version has shutter sound, burst, and more.

Great app, can't wait to see future releases. There's no reason for Apple to not have these features in the native camera app.

Yeah, I saw that his morning while I was fiddling around w/ installer updating some apps. Think I may grab it now.

I agree 100%. I jailbroke my phone as well to use the aim application and it was nothing but headaches... I finally restored my phone and now use the beejive webapp... however I think it is about time apple finally got around to giving us an actual iChat program..

Also, was there such a huge demand to be able to move icons around on my home screen that it had to be included in this new firmware update.... I Mean come on Apple, give the iChat, or MMS messaging. I mean does anyone in here actually care about being able to move icons around on a home screen?

My iphone has stopped working. Simply won't power up. how do you go about sending this to apple and getting it repaired?

Check the site.... apple.com/iphone for a support page, or bring it to a store and they will tell you what to do.

Moving icons around is more a case of preparing the ground for the official devkit so people can install lots of official 3rd party apps.

Never had a problem with my Jailbroken 1.1.2 phone either, apart from when Summerboard had 'Darken wallpaper' turned on. That made things crash all the time, with it off everything has been fine. The mobile messenger (aol/ichat) app works great, runs in the background nicely as well.

Looks like I'm waiting until February for the official SDK to come out then D:

Part of my touch screen died, went into the Apple store, they swapped it for a new one, re-synched, and was back on my way within 5 minutes. Amazing.

As much as people piss and moan about Apple's service on occasion (and deservedly so in some cases), when they get it right, they get it right. They've been 3 for 3 in my book.

Firmware 1.1.3 looks great. That should answer several of the criticisms against the iPhone. The ability to hit a button and have it triangulate your position is pretty cool. I hope this is out soon, and can't wait for the SDK to drop in Feb.

I got a out the box 1.1.2 iphone. can i jailbreak those or is that impossible?
Yep, you just gotta downgrade it to 1.1.1, jailbreak it, and 'prep' it for the 1.1.2 upgrade through Installer.

I hope someone figures out a way to jailbreak 1.1.3... I can't live without iSolitaire.

I almost wanted to get an Ipod Touch, but ill hold on a little longer waiting for the iphone.
I hope apple announces an EU date at Macworld.

So I got my iPhone yesterday and I love it so very very much.

It's a 1.0.2 iPhone unlocked with AnySim and I'm using it on Rogers. So far so good.

What I'm wondering is if I'll be able to update the firmware in the future, i know you can update the 1.1.1's but what about these 1.0.2 machines?

Has anyone tried one of the voice recording apps that are floating around? I've been extremely tempted to jailbreak my phone for it ... having my iPhone double as a recorder would be a god send.

Here's hoping Apple drops some third-party apps as a demonstration of the SDK at MacWorld. Native Facebook would be awful nice, though the Web 2.0 version is already great.

Updating 1.0.2 is possible, but you have to virginize the phone first to undo the (bad) changes made by the first version of AnySim. You can install an app to do this now, which makes the process much easier.

Then you upgrade, Jailbreak and unlock.
