iPod battery trouble?

Every once in a while, my iPod will say it has about 1/3rd of a charge left and it suddenly suddenly turns itself off. When I turn it back on it gives me the low battery warning and now the battery meter is empty.

It's a 3G that I've had since May of 2003. Do you guys think the battery is starting to go or could there be some other horrible problem (like the fact that I dropped it about 3 feet on to a hardwood floor once back in the summer?). It's totally ok 95% of the time...

Well mine does that occasionally as well. But it seems to me that the iPod is merely crashing on me and rebooting itself. Then, when it reboots, the battery meter is always extremely low, but it readjusts itself to the actual value with time.

holy cow. My 3rd gen does that too. Going to buy a new ipod during the post xmas sale - same exact problem. Class action vs Apple I say.

Is this a widespread thing - its not like the battery is flat because there are times after it reboots, I quickly set it to play some music and it goes for another hour-2.

Well the difference with mine is that the battery meter doesn't readjust itself. If I mess around with it for a minute or two the thing dies like there really is no juice left.

My 4th Gen will display an empty battery bar, and then play for another four hours.

I think I might have fixed, or at least helped, the situation by completely draining the battery and then then charging to full, A kind of a reset, you see.

Mine will start up saying the battery is low at times, then turn off. When I boot it back up (like said above) it shows the actuall battery life and plays fine for about an hour (which is the max life now, the battery is crap & I'm sending it back to apple for a replacement), which sucks because it first started doing this when the battery started to die.

Best I can figure is the iPod battery has a problem with it reading from both cells at times (like an internal short within the battery).

This is why I've grown to be so grumpy about people suggesting iPods like it's the best, when in actuallity *IF* you get one with a battery that will not die early, it's a really great player although overpriced, but the chances of getting a faulty battery inside the player makes it almost not worth it and a risky purchase.

It's just very inconvenient for such a high price tag.

Is this after you leave the iPod somewhere cold?

Cause I left mine in my car last night and a few hours later I turned it on and it said it had no power and shut off, but after it warmed up it had lots of battery life

So far there seems to be no rhyme to the reason in when mine acts up like that.
I can keep it on the charger all night (and I clean all my contants on the iPod & cord every so often to make sure I get good connection for charging) and it'll display that it's charged.

The I go to the GYM, and boom, it dies I restart it, then it's ok for an hour.
The weather here is 34 at the moment, but it's been hot up untill this point, with temps in the 70's-80's daily.

I'd say your batt's borked and opt for the replacement option, if you're still covered by warranty.

It is about 10 degrees here right now, but this problem happened back when it was warmer too. I haven't been able to see a patern yet.

My warrenty is probably well over by now, I got it back in May of 03.
