if you see me in a fight with a bear, don't help me fool, help the bear!
Got an IPOD mini one month ago.. now the fucking thing has 100% locked up.. this morning I woke up and turned on my pc, and after it booted my IPOD had the diagnostics screen on it and I could scroll through the menus now it has completely locked up and does not respond to anything.. also my computer does not see it when it is plugged in..

Not that I can see.. I wish they did.. I don't want to trek to the Mac Store and explain that my IPOD crashed in Japanese....

You can reset them, forgot exactly how, but you can. MY brother did so a month ago.

There is a button reset I know.. but my IPOD doesn't seem to like that right now..

Hold down the center and menu buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds.

Pray to god you don't have to go to Apple support. If you didn't pay for their special care plan, you're in for long phone waits and genius bar nightmares.

My 60 gigger died a month after I got it. I had to sit on the phone for over an hour and a half, until my call was dropped due to high volume on the line. Then calling the Apple Store, I found out I'd have to wait 2 weeks for an appointment at the Genius Bar, since I didn't pay for an Apple Care plan. I couldn't use the web form to send it for repairs because <shock> the serial number on the iPod was invalid. That was later confirmed on a subsequent phone call. This iPod was purchased at the Apple Store. Long story short: I think less of Apple's customer service than I do their products, which at this point is saying quite a bit.

Just the "IPOD Diagnostics" screen is sitting on my IPOD... looks like a mockup version from the stores... Cries..

Feel ya.

My 2d Gen seems to finally have given it up, after years of faithful service.
It responds to everything just fine, but there are CRC errors whenever something tries to write too much to the drive.
Now I have to use the 4th Gen that I have been babying since last September.

Basically let the battery fully drain for 12/24 hours. Then try to reconnect your iPod.

I will give it a shot... it has until thursday then I am packing it up and going to the Mac store...Thank to everyone expect the ass who told me to rub wild cat blood on my nice blue iPod..

If anyone knows anything else please share..

Oh I forgot to tell you when I e-mailed you earlier. I'll post it here so everyone living in Japan knows this too. Apple's store in Ginza and Shibuya both have English speaking staff at the Genius Bar (usually). If you go at a reasonable time (anytime from open to 3-4 hours before close you can schedule a time to talk to an English speaking staff member).

That is good to know! But it is working now... drained the batt and then reset it it... works now...

In a totally unrelated event, on the way to work this morning in the elevator of my building I saw a guy with thew new iPod nano. Fuck that thing is small. I wanted to kick his ass cause his iPod is so much nicer than mine. Then the urge passed and I walked out of the elevator.

to reboot most recent ipods (mini, photo, g4, nano), flip the hold switch on then off, then press and hold together select and menu until it reboots. you must flip the hold switch on the off first though.

Yeah, mine wasn't reacting to any buttons being held at all.. After I drained the batt and then I could reset it..

I've had that problem before. Froze right in the menu. Wouldn't respond to any button presses, the backlight wouldn't even disengage (I have it on a 5 second auto-shutoff.) Flipping the Hold button on for a second, then off, and then holding down the 2 buttons required for the soft reboot DID work for me. I did not have to wait for the battery to discharge.

IIRC, I had to hold the buttons down for 2-3x longer than usual, however. This is on a 4th gen 60gb iPod photo.

you have to hold them down for a while (well, if you consider 6+ seconds a while). The point is it doesn't reset in 2-3 seconds. it is at least 6 seconds I believe.

I've noticed that the time needed is variable... not just from gen to gen. iPods are weird that way.

When I had the problem I tried doing the hold soft reboot thing- unfortunately it didn't work for me- probably didn't hold the buttons for long enough after reading this thread. Anyway letting the battery drain worked for me so I was happy.

For the record, my freeze (happened about 3x with my current iPod), was total. In that plugging it into an AC Adaptor or a computer via USB/Firewire caused no reaction whatsoever.

With me, my 40 gig just up and messed up. The hard drive was screwwed so I gave it to the store and it had scratches and crap on it. They just gave me a new one. Aren't you black? Get angry! :P

You know, mine crashed after the first month or so of having it, but never again. And I know a few folk who had the same shit happen. It's like they have to get "broken in" or some shit.

Ha.. Getting angry doesn't solve anything, well sometimes... but really I am here (in Japan) to break down stereotypes... no need to live them out for an iPod mini.. What really pisses me off is that the 4gig nano cost like 20$ more than my 4 gig mini a month ago..
