Along with the release of some updated/repriced iPods, Apple has also released a software update for *all* existing iPod users including iPod Shuffle.

Not to sound ungrateful, because there were probably hardware problems to get over before this was possible on 3G units, but:

It's about damned time. :P

The only thing better (and something they SHOULD implement in future models) would be a physical shuffle switch (akin to the hold switch maybe..).
 
Not sure what "increased software stability" means here, but eh.

I wish they'd add a way to en-masse checkmark/rate songs in iTunes, tho...and maybe make shuffle/random truly random instead of a fixed playthrough. But just some bitching on my part.

PROTIP: If you tap the play button four times quickly on the shuffle, it re-shuffles the music. No lie.
 
If you tap the shuffle THREE times it takes you to the beginning of your playlist. And you can't shuffle something that's already been shuffled, I mean you can, but it'll make no difference.
 
I suppose asking for multiple on-the-go playlists (or at least, having the ability to delete entries from the one) is too much to ask for the 3G, huh? :P

Literally speaking, it DOES make a difference. If you randomly populate a ten-song playlist which were going to be played in the order 1-10, you DO get a different playback order if you play it, say, 9 6 2 3 10 7 1 4 8 5.

In practical terms, though, it wouldn't make much of a difference...unless, of course, you've already listened to all the songs on the shuffle once and wanted to play them back in a different order the second time through.
 
Well I just tested it out and pressing it 4 times does not work. But this is what I think happens. When you're in inorder pressing play/pause 3 times takes you to the beginning of your playlist where you can traverse it linearly. Pressing play 3 times in shuffle mode however, just takes you to another random song, which may mean they reshuffled the playlist with a new seed. I don't know how the shuffling works but with a full song list I've never listened to the same song twice, and definitely haven't noticed a repeating pattern. Of course that'd be tough to do since I do shuffled autofill and then listen to the thing on shuffle. For shorter playlists that aren't shuffled, maybe that problem arises?

One thing I'd LOVE to be able to do is rate songs on my shuffle, by say holding down play and then pressing the up-volume or down-volume.

Yeah, this is a big gripe for me as well. I guess the 3Gers don't get no love.

I hit it twice quickly then twice quickly a second afterwards and it does that. I'm assuming that it just reseeds the first number or something.
 
Gah, I just bought my wife a 20GB iPod and now she could have had a better one for $50 more!

And I bought a 60 GB iPod Photo in January myself!

And I though Apple was always slow to lower prices. Damn!

I bought a 3G iPod 2 weeks before the 4G came out

I bought a 3G about two weeks before the Mini was announced. Not that I would've gone that route instead, but it stung, a little, in that I wasn't given the option to at least CONSIDER it.

Guess what? This software update adds the ability to create multiple on-the-go playlists on a 3G and just doesn't mention it.

After creating the playlist, you can scroll to the bottom of the list, where you'll have find the option to either clear or save it. Saving it creates "New Playlist #" and clears up the on-the-go list.

I'm liking the music menu they added to the main menu for the 3g's. Now I can have a main menu with only 5 options on it as opposed to the previous main menu I had with about 10 options on it. Looks a lot cleaner.

Reading your post jinx, for some reason I heard Scott Stapp singing "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1" from Creed's second album. <insert tear down cheek here>
