Help out your old Apple lovin' pal, Shogmaster. ;)

I want to do a quick poll on how you protect your iPod (3rd gen, 4th gen, mini, photo with bottom data ports only).

Please answer whether:

1. If you use some kind of sleeve or hard case.
....1a. if so, prefered brand model of protection for the iPod.
....1b. whether the sleeve/case exposes the data port on the bottom.
2. How often (per week) your iPod mates to/sits on your dock.
....2a. if so, do you bother to take the sleeve/case off if you have one that does not expose bottom port.

Thanks in advance.

I don't use one. A few times my ipod went smashing into the ground, mostly while I'm jogging or walking, and surprisingly it's still in good shape. iPod is Invincible.
2. How often (per week) your iPod mates to/sits on your dock.

All the time I'm not using it. The battery dies quickly if I just leave it without charging so it's always on the dock in my TV stand charging 24/7.

Me too. I use the Speck case for the mini:

Speck cases

The bottom ports are all available for syncing/charging. Keep in mind though if you get the iTunes mini, it won't fit through this case. I modified another Speck case to cut out more of the top rubber so that the iTunes will fit on top with the case on.

1. If you use some kind of sleeve or hard case.

i've got a rubber Lajo sleeve with a screen protecter. it attracts dust like a motherfucker.

....1a. if so, prefered brand model of protection for the iPod.

it's decent for what it is. though i want to try the iskin when i can get the cash. Lajo was 55% off, so i paid like 15 bucks for it (and thats shipping included)

....1b. whether the sleeve/case exposes the data port on the bottom.

sure does

2. How often (per week) your iPod mates to/sits on your dock.

i dont have a dock, but i find myself charging it about every other day

1. I use the Apple case/belt clip
2. I dock about twice a week since my Desktop has more or less gone out of commission and I usually forget to do it on my laptop. Before that, every day.

Case or not, it doesn't really matter much Shog, the plastic is finished in several layers of clear coat which is softer than normal so it scratches like mad no matter how great you treat it & no matter if it's in a case or not.

I have 2 both are scratched to hell and back, 1 is in a silk type case and the material put the scratches there. sick eh ?

I suggest the iSkin. It has been great protecting my iPod.

It sounds nice, but seems very inconvenient for working out.
Is there a way to strap it to your side or does it have to go inside a pocket or be carried ?

I looked at these a while back but never saw one that was functional for carrying, just protecting.

iSkin comes with a clip for a belt. It works well, and the belt clip is removable.

The only thing wrong with iSkin is that your iPod becomes a magnet for lint/dust.

For my new 4G I have an iSkin and for working out I use the Speck arm band. The armband itself actaully comes with a free skin, but it was clear and I wanted another color.

Oh yeah, the iSkin's belt clip for the 4G is SUPER bad. Remove it the second you open the skin up. It literally seals itself to the iPod over time with the heat taht is produced. I'm not sure if that hold true for the earlier versions of the iskin.

Awesome!!! I'm glad I asked about this.
I've been searching for a skin other than the rather ugly black silky chloth thing I have but every site, plus the local shops in town didn't have skins with a clip of any kind on the back.

Would you believe the first google image search item for me was a iskin with a clip :/

The sites I searched must not have had these at the time, but wooohooo now I can finally use something that looks decent. I mena what's the point in paying soo much for a products style, then cloaking it behind black chloth ?

Thanks guys I had no idea a clip version was available. :D

I've got a Ghost Iskin for my ipod mini, glows in the dark so you can find it easily when you fall asleep while listening to your ipod. I honestly think i can throw my Ipod from the stairs and it'll still work perfectly with this Iskin. :)

An Apple thread started by Shogmaster? It's kind of like that Bugs Bunny cartoon where Wile E. Coyote sends a robot, girl bunny after Bugs that's loaded with dynamite. :p

But I'll bite:

I have a 3rd gen iPod, and I use the Gravis G-Pod to protect it. It does a pretty good job.

http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/gravis-gpod-reviewed-018872.php

I only dock my iPod to charge it, maybe for the occasional sync. This happens every two days regardless of whether or not it needs it. I was told to have the same charging habit with it as I do my cell phone, that is: whenever it's not being used, just top it off. I do take it out of the case for that, simply because the amount of padding in the G-Pod would make it impossible for it to connect to the dock.

20g 4th Gen

Trendy Geek iShield film for the screen and back\side\bottom. Decent protection on metal when it's in the dock.

Lajo skin, better than iSkin, says I.

Matias iPod Armor. Hardest case around.

Damn, I repeat this a lot.

1. Yes
....1a. I use the Apple brand belt clip case
....1b. It covers the dock
2. About every other day maybe.
....2a. Yes I take the case off

1. I use a rubber case for my iPod, cobalt colored.
....1a. Belkin? I think that's the maker of my case...
....1b. No, it doesn't. The bottom has a little flap that opens and closes should you need to use the bottom port.
2. Whenever I'm at home, the iPod sits at the dock. 6 or so hours plus sleep hours.
....2a. Nope, no need to as my case has a flap.

I use the case which came included in the package -- needless to say, it hasn't done a good job. It covers up everything but the top set of controls -- you can't even see the screen.

However, when I get a newer iPod, I am definitely going to get one of the custom Vaja cases. Those things are SWEET.

2. How often (per week) your iPod mates to/sits on your dock.

On a day when I use my iPod, I dock it to the PC that night to charge it. If I'm on the road, then I'll use the travel charger. Docking it requires that it come out of the sleeve.

So is it definitive that Lajo is better than iSkin?

i've read that the 4g cases arent as good as the 3g. but the integration with the screen protector is better than the iskin.

if they both attract dust like a motherfucker, i'd go with Lajo just based on price alone.

I use a hard case. Contour Showcase. The data/charge port is exposed.

Only when i have it at 50% charge or less. otherwise it sits on my shelf. When charging, i dont take the case off.

I use this skin:

And I use this as a dock:

4G 20gig iPod, here.

1. I use a cloth pouch to store my iPod. I didn't like the belt-clip much because it made the iPod too bulky to fit into my pocket comfortably. Unfortunately, my iPod does have scratches on it. But scratching your iPod is inevitable, anyway.

2. I don't even own a dock!

I have an iSkin, and it is great. There is a rubber flap that covers the bottom port well and makes easy access for uncovering and covering it.

It sucks that it doesn't have an open face for either the window or scroll wheel but...

DOOD! IT'S ARCTIC CAMO!!!

Nice! Thanks for the responses. The reason for this impromptu poll is that me and a friend is trying to develope an iPod accessory and bring it into the market (shock and awe! :lol ). The issue of the sleeve/cover is somewhat importatnt in it's development, so I wanted to get a feel of what the users are doing.

Please, keep adding to this poll. More info the better. And there might be more polls as weeks go on. Gonna try to see a patent lawyer next week. Anyone know of a good one in LA? ;)

My only iskin complaint is that even though it has a flap for the bottom port, I can't use it on my dock without taking the skin off. :( It doesn't fit.

This one does:

The one thing that bugs me with my Speck skin is there's no protection for the screen, I'd figured that'd be an obvious thing to add.

I think my ideal case would be the Contour Design one. It's either that, or a Marware one where there's a flap...

but I can't find these fricking things in retail :(
and I REALLY don't want to order it through some US site. Does anybody know where I can purchase 'em in Toronto, or Canada in general?
