Ipod people, whats the difference between

the 6gig minis and 20gig ipod? It's only a $40 difference on amazon for such a huge ammount of memory and I'm looking to buy one soon. I know nothing about ipods so any help would be great.

Size, color screen, and battery life.

Here's a link to the tech specs.

the mini is MUCH smaller, MUCH MUCH lighter and has around 3 hours more battery life. also I BELIEVE (correct me if I'm wrong) the microdrives are much less susceptible to shock damage than the hard drives in the photos. the minis are basically the best ipod to use as a workout buddy.

that being said, if none of that stuff matters to you, the photos are a much more full featured ipod and can hold a ton more songs.

There's still some stock of the B&W 20GB iPod which was replaced by the colour one earlier in the year, so you can get it at a discount. That's the B&W one.

If you don't want the colour screen/photos and want to save the money it's a good buy. The B&W one is the slimmest and lightest of the big iPods as well.

mini is a bit smaller. it's very popular with females around here. it's said to be the best seller 'cause most people have small collections (or only need small collections on their portable) and 4-6gb is sufficient.

the 20/30 closeouts are the best choice if you need more space or want to do photos with the new/old color models.

not to start any crap or anything... but I hear the larger ones have a higher fail rate... for the people who have been keeping score at home, is there any truth to that?

My 3G's still kicking along just fine. If they have a "higher" failure rate to the minis, then it's pretty relative. About the only consistent complaint with older iPods is battery life.

I got a mini.. but I heard that after I bought it.. mostly about the 60gb... just thought I'd ask if there was any truth to it at all.

Note there's an Apple Music Event on September 7th -- new iPods could be introduced there, so I'd hold off. At the very least you might be able to pick up an older model cheap if you're not interested in the new stuff.

Actually the iAudio X5 20 GB just caught my eye. It looks just as good as the ipod 20gb photo, does all the same crap AND plays movies.
portible porn player :)

movies on a portable 2" screen suck. IMHO of course. if you are interested in an iAudio, compare it with other IMPORTANT features (battery life, sound quality, supported formats, UI).

Apple Music event is the 7th, and the Apple Paris Expo is the 20th-24th. Right now is the WORST time to buy an iPod.. and it's killing me because I am dying to buy one. I'm hoping that Apple announces something at the Music Event so I don't have to wait until Paris......... :(

All those features are better than ipods. Most importantly, the sound quality. I wont be using it to watch movies per say, just video clips for fun.
Also, does anyone know any other good mp3 players at <300 that include video besides the iaudio

ipod usability & convenience factor cannot be underestimated (it's a portable device afterall).

iAudio :lol :D

The iPod Photo was cool when it was first announced, but now with the PSP... it's mainly just an awesome music player. Sharing Jpegs with friends is so much more vibrant and brilliant with the PSP screen as opposed to the iPod, and if you wanted to split hair... the PSP also could play your music provided you had a big enough stick.

The pun... was intended.

Yeah whats so special about ipod compared to the other companies? Nothing at all, some people like the look and thats basically it. Its made for teenage morons who want to fit in with their "cool" friends in high school and jr high.

no. do a search for any ipod usability comparison and even the reviewers who like other features of other players agree hands down iPod has the best UI and connectivity. sure you could write off the complications as still being able to do it on other players, but it is MUCH easier on an iPod with iTunes (or like ephpod) also stuff like navigating your collection, especially on large collections, smart playlists, etc. sound quality, file compatibility, display, battery life, etc.. all of them have been improved upon by other players, but ipod still wins useability and UI.. not even a contest.

I'm going for audio quality mainly, which all reviews and comparasions award the Iaudio. It's also detected as a usb hard drive and doesn't force you to use some horrible program to put the music on.
Menu systems on it doesn't hurt my opinion of either one, I'm not a retarded teen who can't figure out how to use it due to being high.

Ive used both iAudio and the ipod, while the ipod is more user friendly, the iAudio sounds better and can do so much more, plus its smaller and lighter and if u get X5L u get 35hr battery life :D

sounds like your choice is made, just want to make mention that there is a difference between a UI not being braindead simple but full featured and a UI being limited and unintuitive.

so-so control layout; can't autosync music with a PC; can't browse by artist, album, or genre;

palm-size video and music player suffers from poor music browsing and some key design missteps.

But music lovers with gigabytes of songs and iPod converts accustomed to seamless iTunes integration should think carefully before taking the plunge.

Playing music on the X5 is similar to watching movies; you either navigate to the Music directory to find your tunes, or you can access a playlist.

those are pretty big usability flaws to me.. don't know what the august update has/had in it, but the having to navigate by directory layout or playlist only would fucking suck with my current 2000+ songs among 220+ directories. and having to actually create playlists for all of that (itunes I only make smart playlists).. like I said.. I don't need an interface to be brain dead simple (been using computers since the VIC-20) but not being counter-intuitive is sure a bonus. this is mainly steering me towards an ipod. yes I will suffer slightly in sound quality right now, but being able to navigate the collection (And I'm not even 1/3 through my CDs yet) is a HUGE bonus.

OGG would be nice, but I am already ripping at VBR: Extreme AAC with nero, so I have probably hit transparency on everything I've ripped so far. .

oh, I got those quotes from http://reviews.cnet.com/Cowon_iAudio_X5__30GB_/4505-6490_7-31447897.html?tag=topprods

I looked on iaudios site and there was an update in the beginning of august, but there are no release notes for it aside from "improved features". maybe some x5 user's can comment more. but like I said, as it stands for me right now, I am more interested in Apple's announcement next monday than iaudio unless they seriously fix the UI.

currently 284 artists, 160 albums, and 23 genres... I would hate to even think about navigating that in a directory structure.

If you're getting a 20GB+ player, ease of use is arguably the most important factor. It defeats the object of having all that music at hand if you can't quickly navigate to what you want.

And anyone who says they can notice a difference in sound-quality through earbuds is having a laugh.

I dont see why directories would be such a problem unless you're a slob.
On my pc I have my music\artist\album and can just copy and paste it into the player, simple nav I'd think, hm. I'm still gonna wait a week or so to see this ipod crap.

A lot of the iPod's ease-of-use comes from the scrollwheel. Once you start getting hundreds of artists and albums there really is no quicker and easier way to go through them.

Players with just up/down/left/right/select are painful to use in comparison. And alternatives such as jog-shuttles, vertical scrollers etc. just don't work as well. The scrollwheel is one thing Apple had the right idea about from the very beginning.

that's great. on the pc where I can just click to the directory tree and grab the song I want right there... but what about on a unit with a 4-5 lines screen? I have 270 artist directories in the main directory, and up to 10 so far directories under each of those for albums. So just for me to listen to Led Zeppelin Song Remains the Same I have to exit out of the directory I'm in, move all the way down to Led Zeppelin, (28 pages down with 5 lines, 34 pages down with 4 lines), THEN scroll down three pages to get two song remains the same.. I won't even get into the fact that for me Discs 1 and 2 are in separate dirs.. just what I listed alone is how many joystick clicks? whereas ipod I can fly through with the scroll wheel to led zeppelin, and even though all of the albums are in different directories they are all listed with there on the main page and I can scroll wheel down to song remains the same and start playing. in my case it will even then play discs 1 and 2 in order without me needing to back out of the first directory and enter the second directory.

sorry man.. stick with the sound quality and formats issues. iaudio has the player beat hands down there. but when it comes to useability and management of libraries that are tens of gigabytes in size, there is no replacement for an ipod. I don't even want to think about listening to Talk fro Yes... I might get carpal tunnel on the iaudio :P

actually not even trying to bash it. I never used the iaudio.. but the whole directory thing is a HUGE turn off to even bother considering it. after today's rip session I am at over 2500 songs across almost 190 albums.. There is no simple way to deal with that directory structure. I definitely need a UI that is capable of navigating that.

um no.... wrong.... read the other replies if you wish to expand your horizons 'cause they defeated your argument rather soundly.

And the hits keep on a comin'

I can guarantee you i'm not a slob and can navigate any ipod wannabe clone ever made. But with 30-ish GB of music (and growing) i'd be an A$$HOLE to dismiss the iPod, cause it frikin simply rocks. So does iTunes. The file sharing mode alone kicks all sorts of booty for home wireless networks.

ps - and for the record most apple stuff i find useless along with their OS.

pss - another :lol :lol to the tool suggesting photo is useless cause of PSP.

hm well while doing research tonight I've seen in a few places that a firmware update is due out soon to fix the nav system to work with id3 tags or whatever they're called. Hopefully that'll fix this problem.

fair enough. but on a similar note apple is making a supposedly large announcement next wednesday as well..

I think it is safe to say that no matter which unit you are interested in it's probably a good idea to wait at least a week or so. :)

I usually have to reset my iPod (4g, 40gb) two or three times a week due to freezing. However, that usually happens when I've been doing lots of uploading, or if I start skipping around a whole bunch. If I just choose an album or put it on shuffle I usually get no problems for at least 7 hours.

I asked this a while back but forgot if I got a clear answer: I have a 40 gig iPod, right after it got discontinued for a discount. I swore the battery life was suppose to be 12 hours or something (that was the number advertised, right?) but I can only get 7 hours and that's with no backlighting. Should I call Apple and ask for a new battery?
