I finally managed to pick up an iPod shuffle. The Apple outlet at Calabasas was sold out, but luckily a guy in the office suggested that I'd check out Best Buy before we'd head for some mexican. Right he was - there was a huge pile of them. No accessories, however. I got the 1GB one, naturally.
My thoughts:
DESIGN
Needless to say, iPod shuffle looks fantastic. The design is brilliant with a white shiny finish and no connectors to add visual clutter. It's a cool item to have on a plane table for everyone to admire, too. Makes all other devices look outdated.
BATTERY LIFE
Brilliant. Lasted all the way accross the Atlantic - 9h, with juice left to the lounge.
CHARGING
No charger. I just stuck it to the USB port of my PowerBook during my second flight, and with 15 min it had enough of charge to last for the next couple of hours. Very convenient.
SIZE/WEIGHT
Size is no doubt the killer feature of this device. It is just about as big as a pack of Juicy Fruit and doesn't weight almost anything. It goes neatly to shirt pocket. In fact, a word of warning, you might not even notice if it is hanging free with your headphones in your ears.
DURABILITY
This thing is made for being thrown around. With no moving parts, it can be dropped just like any memory card. No need to worry sick like with the normal iPod or PSP.
ITUNES INTERFACE
A custom interface, no installining needed. You can choose whether to use your library or a playlist to sample songs to fill the shuffle. I created intelligent, self-updating playlists from my favorite genres for different situations.
USE CONTEXTS
Since essentially you can nor select or tell what it is playing, it's best suited for situations where you won't want to change the tracks yourself. So far I've created two playlists based on genres - "Chill" and "Big Beat / Dance". I fill my shuffle from the first list for plane trips, good for sleeping. The second list is for jogging and gym. I refresh every couple of days.
IPOD vs. IPOD SHUFFLE
After getting the shuffle, I haven't used my regular iPod. This is because in the situations where I'd use it fit with shuffle well - mainly plane and sports. The regular iPod feels rather big and fragile now, too.
BOTTOMLINE
Cool. Convenient.
For the sceptical - iPod shuffle is a glorified USB stick, essentially. However, the great interface with iTunes sets it apart from regular USB sticks. I haven't checked, but I'd assume that competing products could be found cheaper. For me, that doesn't matter, however. I don't need Apple. I want Apple.
iPod shuffle provides an excellent, durable music solution perfectly fitting with the situations I use my iPod in. It's like a personal radio station - playing random music with a certain theme - but only music I like. Now that sounds like viral marketing doesn't it!
