iPod shuffle - impressions

I finally managed to pick up an iPod shuffle. The Apple outlet at Calabasas was sold out, but luckily a guy in the office suggested that I'd check out Best Buy before we'd head for some mexican. Right he was - there was a huge pile of them. No accessories, however. I got the 1GB one, naturally.

specstop20050111.jpg

My thoughts:

DESIGN
Needless to say, iPod shuffle looks fantastic. The design is brilliant with a white shiny finish and no connectors to add visual clutter. It's a cool item to have on a plane table for everyone to admire, too. Makes all other devices look outdated.

BATTERY LIFE
Brilliant. Lasted all the way accross the Atlantic - 9h, with juice left to the lounge.

CHARGING
No charger. I just stuck it to the USB port of my PowerBook during my second flight, and with 15 min it had enough of charge to last for the next couple of hours. Very convenient.

SIZE/WEIGHT
Size is no doubt the killer feature of this device. It is just about as big as a pack of Juicy Fruit and doesn't weight almost anything. It goes neatly to shirt pocket. In fact, a word of warning, you might not even notice if it is hanging free with your headphones in your ears.

DURABILITY
This thing is made for being thrown around. With no moving parts, it can be dropped just like any memory card. No need to worry sick like with the normal iPod or PSP.

ITUNES INTERFACE
A custom interface, no installining needed. You can choose whether to use your library or a playlist to sample songs to fill the shuffle. I created intelligent, self-updating playlists from my favorite genres for different situations.

USE CONTEXTS
Since essentially you can nor select or tell what it is playing, it's best suited for situations where you won't want to change the tracks yourself. So far I've created two playlists based on genres - "Chill" and "Big Beat / Dance". I fill my shuffle from the first list for plane trips, good for sleeping. The second list is for jogging and gym. I refresh every couple of days.

IPOD vs. IPOD SHUFFLE
After getting the shuffle, I haven't used my regular iPod. This is because in the situations where I'd use it fit with shuffle well - mainly plane and sports. The regular iPod feels rather big and fragile now, too.

BOTTOMLINE

Cool. Convenient.

For the sceptical - iPod shuffle is a glorified USB stick, essentially. However, the great interface with iTunes sets it apart from regular USB sticks. I haven't checked, but I'd assume that competing products could be found cheaper. For me, that doesn't matter, however. I don't need Apple. I want Apple.

iPod shuffle provides an excellent, durable music solution perfectly fitting with the situations I use my iPod in. It's like a personal radio station - playing random music with a certain theme - but only music I like. Now that sounds like viral marketing doesn't it!

Honestly, I wouldn't mind it being a tad bigger if it meant an lcd

I passed on it and went w/ the 20gb Ipod yesterday. I love this sucker (even though the bass blows :/ )

After playing around with the thing yesterday. I dont know what to think of it. I deffinatly wouldnt buy one. But its so damn smart and sneaky. Its working in front of your eyes. While i was at bestbuy last night i saw in less than 20 minutes about 30 casual people ask what it was and how much. Out of those 30, 20 of them just bought the damn thing. They werent there for a damn MP3 player in the first place and they bought one.

So you tell me is the marketing working? YES

Now if only i could get one free ^_^

supposedly the audio is better on the shuffle as opposed to the regular iPods. I don't have a regular one so I can't comment on that, and I'm not much of an audiophile to comment on the quality of the shuffle.

It seems to be good to me though, at first I thought the songs had a deepish sound to them but it could have just been the tracks.

Well, that's the entire point. Instead of being aware of any miniscule audio deficiencies, us normal people don't have to spend thousands of dollars for the best equipment to have something NOT to bitch about. Of course, you can revel in the finer qualities of your musical taste when you do get that elusive mix of perfect hardware and sound source working together, but how often do you do that while riding a bike?

I've owned 3 portable audio devices in my life, a walkman, a Sony MD player and a crappy Discman, and the Shuffle has better playback than them all.

I can't tell either way. It isn't strikingly different from the earlier iPods I've listened. I'm using Apple's earbuds, in-ear headphones and Sony's DJ headphones.

sony uses better DACs and better analog sections, it's true, but atrac transcoding kind of kills it

Sounds neat but the price tag hardly justifies the benefits. I can't understand why anyone would spend $150 on something that can only hold 1 gigabyte of memory. (my 1 gig usb jumpdrive only cost $50, it can't play mp3s sure, but the ability to play them shouldn't be much more).

I have had my shuffle for about a week and I absolutely love it.

I love how it has the option to grab 512mb of songs randomly from my playlist so that I'll be surprised whenever I listen to it at work. I also love its featherweight smallness and ability to wear it on my neck so it's hands-free. It meets my needs perfectly.

That being said, it's not perfect. Here are two negatives:

1) In a previous thread, AlphaSnake talked about the differences between PSP audio and iPod audio. I've not listened to mp3s on a PSP, but I can tell you that AlphaSnake is right about one thing: There is audio hissing similar to what you hear with audio tapes. It's mostly noticeable right when a song ends and there's no sound, and you can distinctly hear the hiss. It's not very noticeable when you listen to a song, but it is there. I don't know if it's just how mp3s are or if it's the way Apple's software is designed. I've never owned any other portable mp3 player, so I have no basis of comparison. The hiss is not a big deal for me, but it is present.

2) As great as the shuffle interface is on the front, I think the back interface sucks. From off position, you pull it down one-click and it's on normal resume-play. Two-clicks and it's on shuffle-play. Simple enough. But in practice, it's often difficult to get it right in the middle for one-click. Pretend there's a line 10 cm long.

0 ------ 5 ------ 10

0 - Off
5- Resume
10 - Shuffle

The slider is too free flowing so that if you slide it to 3, it might still be off. Or it might be counted as Resume. If you stick it on 6 or 7, it might be Resume, or it might be Shuffle. It should be way more rigid so you know exactly how you're playing.

Why does it matter? If you were last listening to a song and then turn it off. The next time you turn it on, and want to just finish the song/song list from last time, you may accidentally put it on shuffle. But once you do that and realize it, put it back to Resume and the playlist starts from the beginning again.

That's the one user interface boo-boo I see with the iPod. It is an annoyance to me, and I'm a little more careful of where I'm sliding the thing. But I wish the click points were a lot more pronounced.

I still love it, but I hope they do something with that in future versions.

Sorry, no lcd and no folders option makes me cringe at the thought of having to fast forward past 100+ songs just to get to the one i want to listen to.

I bought my second one yesterday. Now hang on a second.

I bought a 512 last week because 1GB was nowhere to be found (the apple store and best buy had not even got the gig yet). So I picked up the 512 since it was a gift from my mom.

well I liked it, but I was frustrated that I had to re-encode everything at a lower bitrate when I loaded it (which it does automatically if you choose the option) so I had a decent ammount of music on it. So then I found out Target has shitloads of the things, and a gang load of 1 Gig ones. Best buy took the thing right back, no problem (I thought Best Buy was supposed to be shitty about this stuff) no restocking fee or anything.

I just reloaded the 1 gig last night, and when you don't re-encode the tracks it loads up surprisingly fasst for what I expect from USB.

But that's the entire point. The thing isn't meant for specific-song-type of playback. It's meant to be turned on, paused when need be, and resumed. You can't think of it like a jukebox, you have to think of it like a portable radio that's super light, only plays music you like without any commercials.

I mean, if you have to move past 100 songs just to get a song that you like, then why do you even have those other 100 songs on there in the first place?

And Tsubaki,
I totally agree with you about the sliding mechanism. With the front UI I don't even have to look at the iPod to press the buttons, but with the back UI I have to be careful to put it in the right position. I mean, if you're just going between OFF and SHUFFLE modes, then you don't need to look since you just shove it all the way up or all the way down, but I like playing in-order sometimes and it can be annoying.

As for the hiss, I haven't heard any. But I'm using the earbuds which don't provide the greatest aural clarity, and I never have the music loud as I need to hear the ambient sounds around me (riding a bike, at work).

Hey guys! A quick update here... as of Feb. 10th...

Additional cases are now being made.
I am working my tail off to try to get the very first shipments out by the end of next week!

If you are interested in buying one, email me here at XAXIS @ COX.NET.
I'll add you to the list and let you know when they become available. They will be sold on a first come, first served basis for a while.

Pricing still remains undetermined, but I will post a webpage with additional info, pics, and pricing in the coming days.

For those that haven't seen my full size iPod cases, here's a link to a page with 3 pics of the 3G version that I did last summer...

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE PICS OF ONE OF MY FULL SIZE IPOD CASES.

I will post pics of the 4G version as soon as I get a chance. These styles are being made as well!

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful comments and continued support!

Latest Update... Feb. 11th, 2005

Getting closer... the patent process has begun.
The initial website is just about ready to go.
I registered 10 domain names last night.

Still lots to do, but I'm making some serious headway.

*************************************
Another quick update here... as of Feb. 14th...

Well everybody, I've made some headway on these cases over the weekend. I spent all day at my buddy's shop on Saturday working to get his shop producing them as well. He is at least as meticulous as I am about the quality, so I have no concerns there.

I also met with another friend that owns a major mfg. enterprise on Friday as well. They've got several facilities and tons of resources to draw from. They will be helping out to get the other models rolling as well.

Of course, I'm covering my bases with signed, non-disclosure (confidentiality) agreements in place, as well as the patent process that was already started during the week. I'm pretty familiar with this whole process as I do it at work all the time. I am a design engineer by trade (my day job) and develop products for a global action sports / lifestyle brand that does $600 million in sales / year, worldwide. I'm no stranger to the product development process so this is not too big a stretch for me.

I am trying to keep the price as low as possible.
I think you all will be pleasantly surprised.
It will be quite a great deal for the product you are getting.

I would like to say that I am just completely overwhelmed by the show of support here. All you guys (and gals!) are great. It's because of you and your comments that things have come this far.

Wow, I still have tons to do and many things still to consider, but I am very passionate about my work. You can expect my efforts to be just as great as the cases themselves.

Since it's Valentine's Day, and love is in my heart, how about I don't ban you, but instead just offer a warm, heartfelt, comforting "fuck off" instead? I don't know why you can't leave this topic alone, but I suspect it's related to the reason that mosquitos are obsessed with buzzing lights on outdoor patios. Tread carefully, my friend.

The thing you continue to not understand -- or understand and just feel like trolling anyway -- is that the shitload of people buying iPods (yes, even the shuffle) are NOT part of this "Mac fan base" you keep citing. It's a consumer good which hasn't been tied into the Macintosh product for many years. Although I'm sure Apple would like to sell more of their PCs, the two are integrated solely through style at this point -- and perhaps marketing, though you never see them together in iPod ads.

Finally, there is no "cognitive dissonance" here. People are making buying decisions based on features and style...exactly as they always do. Whether or not you agree is irrelevant. What IS relevant is the way that you constantly step into these threads and broadcast your opinion, whether or not it's on topic or not. If you'd pulled this kind of shit in the Gaming Forum with [insert your favorite console here], you'd have been gone a long time ago.

None value added according to whom? You? What a self important blowhard.

What it comes down to, is you don't want ANYONE saying anything negative in your precious Mac threads. In the previous Mac thread, I was engaged in debate using plenty of value added reason and logic until you banned me for schooling some of you. In this one, I was called in, so I answered briiefly.

The irony is, I would have made couple of posts in the thread and called it a day, but your BS just keeps me in it. If you just shut the fuck up and leave the thread, so will I.

I think you should be banned again. Maybe permanently if this is a constant thing. If not, then try finding a new "nitch" here at GAF.

And I'm not responding this way because I like Apple or iPods. In fact, I don't like either and often despise the fans, but you're just being too much of a douchebag to look over.

I have never touched a Mac computer in my life but I own an iPod. What's this "Mac fanbase" you keep harping on? I've been and will continue to be a Windows user (mostly cause that's what I use at work so why have something different at home?) You seem to make broad generalizations that the iPod's success has something to do with Mac zealots boosting the sales. I beg to differ on this...if only Mac zealots bought iPods, the market share would be crappy, the reason iPods are so hot is that non-Mac users buy them.

Well, no one "needs" a Windows-based computer. Which platform you ultimately choose is inherently based on wants, as in "what you want to do with your computer."

I'm mulling over switching to a Mac, mostly because I want to do my work and not be bothered with monthly security patches, among other things.

Hang out with Steve.
The only thing that bothers me about iPod shuffle derision is that detractors don't seem to understand that there actually is a market for folks who will use the Shuffle as it is designed. They just don't seem to "get" that their needs aren't necessarily exactly the same as everyone else's.

Case in point. I have a 30GB 3rd gen iPod. I usually listen to it in the car. And the way I listen to it is to put it on shuffle songs & let it go. If I don't want to hear a particular song, I just hit the Next button. For this sort of listening, I don't even NEED a display.

That said, I also am one of those people who likes to have their entire music collection with them all the time -- something yet another segment of iPod detractors can't seem to understand. So for me, having a screen is useful because I can choose a specific playlist or even a specific song if I want. For example if I bring my iPod to a party & hook it up to a stereo, which I have done a few times, or if my wife wants to listen to a particular type of music when we're on a long trip. So I appreciate the flexibility that the display on the "high capacity" iPod provides.

But the shuffle isn't targeted at that market. It's not meant to be used as a jukebox for your entire collection. It's meant to be used on the go. It's meant to be synched with iTunes every day, especially with the autofill feature, so that you can have a different random subset of your music with you every time you walk out the door. You can certainly pick certain tracks, albums or playlists to put on it if you want, and you can listen to The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon in order. But the listening style of random tracks from your music collection is what the shuffle is designed for.

And for that, you simply don't need a display. It's superfluous. And judging by the fact that they can't keep these things in stock, it's something that lots of people "get", even while detractors don't.

And if that's not how you want to listen to music, Apple has a full range of iPods with displays available for you :)

Well put.

There are indeed different contexts for different devices. I have both an iPod 20GB and an iPod shuffle 1GB, and my gf has an iPod mini. After getting the shuffle, this is how I use my gear:

In home: iPod 20 GB hooked up to stereo system (now the proper way from behind the dock, not the dork way as in my living room pic). Good as I can choose whatever I feel like. Twin Peaks soundtrack for sweet loving and FBS for first friday beer.

While commuting: iPod shuffle with random mix from my whole Library

While flying: iPod shuffle with random mix from my "Chill" genre based intelligent playlist

While working out: iPod shuffle with random mix from my "Big Beat / Dance" based intelligent playlist.

While in office:: Powerbook from my iTunes library.

Different toys for different contexts. As for my Apple fanboyism - sure, I'm to Apple products what Olimario is to Pikmin plushdolls. I must say in my defence that I'm not going around saying that "omg this is the best value for money ever and everybody should try this". Indeed, design can't be judged in a value-based way. The Philippe Starck citrus fruit-press in an extreme example where form has made function completely redundant - even unusable. Shuffle has some function, however.
