I was reading up on a couple of reviews, and it makes a point that you need a powered usb port.

What the heck's an unpowered one? :p

Would it just charge fine and dandy in my laptop's usb2 ports?

No idea what a 'powerer' usb port is... possibly one that is currently drawing power, ie: the computer is plugged in.
oh, make sure that there is enough room for the shuffle to fit in the port. I have to get a usb extension because my port was on the back of the laptop and was horizontal. So when I tried to plug it in it kept hitting the plastic.

Probably, but no guarantees - I have an external HDD that is USB powered, and it won't start up if I hook it up to my notebook (have to use a powered USB hub instead)...

I don't think the Shuffle uses as much juice as my external HDD but I wouldn't guarantee it to work - maybe someone here has one and a notebook who can tell you...

Matlock: Yeah, your laptop ports will work just fine. Examples of non-powered USB ports are things like the USB ports on keyboards which accept devices but don't send any power through to them.

This custom case is sexy. I normally just put the shuffle in my pocket as opposed to wearing it so this would keep it from getting scratched up

Hot damn. But does it come with a leather case so that pretty metal doesn't get all scratched up?

It will charge perfectly fine on your laptops port. A non powered USB are things such as hubs etc, (keybord with slot etc.) that don't provide enough juice to operate the device. a lot of hubs are powered now anyway.

The only problem I have run into on my laptop was that the USB ports were to close together to have the shuffle and my mouse in at the same time, I bought a 6 dollar usb 2.0 swivle at radio shack. solved.

edit: I see karushima ansewred this well before I did.

its pretty cheap in the UK, for once. £69 for the 512, £99 for the 1GB. Thats pretty much the cheapest flash player on the market. I know you don't get a screen, but how much use is a one/two line display in practice when you have 1000 songs?

The only thing its missing IMO is an album skip button/mode. like DVD players usually have.

I'm loving my shuffle so far. I'm not a very heavy user, but I've been able to go through a week without needing to recharge the Shuffle. I have some problems with the interface though. I'm sure Apple has thought about this, but I don't understand why the Shuffle's on/off interface can't be the same as other iPods i.e. hold the 'play' button to switch it off and have the 'hold' switch on the back. At the moment, sometimes I tuck my Shuffle inside a shirt or a jacket or something and I would like to be able to turn it off without having to take it out, since I can do everything else (skip songs, change volume) with the player still tucked underneath a piece of clothing.

Although I doubt that it will happen, I hope that we'll be able to change the interface of the shuffle with a firmware update, the design is perfectly fine, I'd just like to change change some button functions and maybe have add more (like skipping albums) with button combinations.

Does the shuffle come with an armband? I'm thinking about getting a 512 one for gym use, but only want one if it was an arm band. If not I'll go with an Iriver flash player.

No. It does come with a lanyard however; you can buy armbands for it most anywhere they sell iPod accessories. I don't know if the iRivers come with an armband either.

Thanks, guys. And the space for a USB port won't be that much of a trouble--I have one free one on one side that I can hook it into. :D

my best buy, circuit city, and target were sold out (circuity city did have the 1 gig version though)...

I really want one, and since I've waited this long I guess it's not a big deal to wait for Apple to ship...

does their online store or online education stores (the ones they do w/ colleges) charge sales tax?

if they don't I'll probalby just order straight from Apple, if not I'll probably wait for a local store to get some...
