iPod without iTunes?

I use iTunes happily at home, but now my company has decided that iTunes poses a security threat so they're uninstalling it and blocking downloads of the installation software - how nice.

Anyway, since I like to shift music from my iPod to my PC at work, is there any other software that can help me out? I noticed that iTunes puts all my music in seemingly random folders that make no sense to a human eye, so it doesn't seem feasible to copy the files off directly. Has anyone made a nice app that can do this, or are any other music players iPod-compatible? (can't be Winamp - that has also been given the axe!)

doesn't ephpod do it?

Itunes randomly organises files? my folders are all perfectly organised... Can't you burn the install to a cd and just take it to work? or memory stick.... Install it to another folder if they have basic checking for c:\program files\itunes or whatever the real path is....

Why not just hook your iPod up to a pair of speakers then, and play it that way? Is there a specific reason you have to copy the contents of your iPod to your work PC all the time?

Batteries mainly... I only have one iPod charger and I'm too lazy to unplug it everyday and take it to work with me.

Does your transfer method at work charge the iPod?

A charger seems like a worthy investment to not have to resync on another machine. I work for a big company and I wouldn't want to store my collection on their PC.

....I didn't want to start yet another goddamned iPod thread ;)

Just scored an HP-Pod (I'm clumsy, and Applecare won't do for accidents, and stores won't cover iPods with their accidental coverage, only HP-Pods) for my secret project, and I need some more questions answered from PC iPod folks before I tear into and make mistakes before I get started.

1. How easy to use the pod as a portable external HD. Will it show up as a drive letter when connected via USB 2.0? Is transfering data files just click and drag?

2. I hear weird rumors about USB 2.0 connection method eventually fucking up the pod, and that the Firewire is the prefered connection. Any truth to this?

3. Anything I should be warned about before I connect this momba jamba?

You raise a good point. Having the files on this machine may make me liable for something in the future.

On a tangent, does anyone have problems transferring to your iPod on XP Pro when another person is logged in, even though they're not using iTunes? I think the iPod helper may be loaded into memory for both users to it locks me out. Is it as easy as removing the file from a startup menu, or something more complex?

been looking into this, as I'd like to use WMP10. there is software called xPlay that can do what you want. It allows you to drag and drop music to and from the ipod,( and data too). And it can tie into WMP9/10 and let you synch to the ipod directly.
