Hi. I'm planning on buying a used iPod as a gift for my girlfriend. The iPod doesn't come with anything, just the unit. So I need to buy all the necessary equipment. My girlfriend has a laptop and is in England right now so a normal AC adapter isn't going to cut it (different outlets and the converters are reliable). I don't understand how firewire works, being a pc owner but please correct me with my idea:

I'm going to buy a PCMCIA card that has firewire ports on it for her laptop in addition to a dock connector with a firewire plug. Will she be able to charge and synch her ipod to her laptop to download music with this setup? Will she be able to charge her ipod when her laptop is asleep?

Thanks in advance.

Most laptops have a 4-pin Firewire connector, which doesn't supply power to the device. The latest generation of iPods (4G, the one with the gray clickwheel in the center) can also be charged via USB 2.0, but since you want a used iPod, the latest generation may be off the table.

If the PCMCIA card has a 6-pin powered Firewire port, then you SHOULD be in business...but that is the specific question you're going to have to ask when you're shopping around.
